A Beautiful Lack of Consequence

Rate this book
Across thirty striking tales, Monika Radojevic weaves together the surreal with the everyday, confronting the experiences of contemporary womanhood with a tender ferocity shot through with humour.

A woman walks into a bar, and nobody notices. A newly married couple are punished for their childlessness with an unsettling nocturnal invasion. A girl trades her vocal cords for a chance at freedom. A door-to-door salesperson offers the antidote to women’s fear – but it comes at a high price.

Bubbling with an urgent rage that occasionally tips over into vengeance, Radojevic deftly charts the moments that make a from the warmth of first love to the recognition of anger, and the possibilities that take shape as we find or lose our ability to speak. A Beautiful Lack of Consequence explores the ways in which the world bends and breaks women with the pressure it puts on them – and what happens when those women snap back.

Moving and irreverent, dark and otherworldly, A Beautiful Lack of Consequence is a blazing debut collection from the winner of the #Merky Books New Writers’ Prize.

Now, this book comes at such an important time and I'm confident the words and tough subjects raised throughout this read will kick start conversations we as a society we need. We live in a world where violence against women is on the rise across the world and the collection of stories presented to us here highlight the uncertain life we as women live in as well the struggles, the anger, the abuse, violence and at the core, the female rage that lives deep within so many of us.

Monika Radojevic captivates her audience as we are taken on a journey that doesn't shy away from highlighting common myths, stereotypes and even fairy tales that centre around women and the potential harm is has sent our way and the anger that simmers beneath us. Topics around motherhood, career and social life, social media, abuse, historical violence against women bleed through the pages of this book refusing to shy away from tough subjects that even us as women may find hard to honestly talk about at times.

As we read more of this book its clear that this is a fantastic, current and relevant book that provides its reader with facts, the occasional statistics and creative stories that leave us totally gripped. The modern tales, descriptions and themes are sure to create conversations around the world for there is no doubt in my mind so many will relate to this book. I ended the final chapter feeling proud to be a woman, emotional and ready for more discussions. This is one I will most certainly recommend to family, friends, and anyone open to looking deeper into the society we live in and life as a woman especially through a more creative lens. I'm confident this book will kick start more conversations around these topics at a time where we must discuss violence against women and womanhood even more.

A diverse collection of pieces, some with elements of horror (witches, ghosts), some with a fantasy touch (a talking clitoris!!). An entertaining and thought-provoking read.

Loved it loved it loved it.
Absolutely devoured this.
The themes are so hard hitting and relatable for women and the writing was so beautiful and raw.
I really enjoy a short story (short attention span so they suit me perfectly) however there were a few that I wish were novels because I got so into them and they really just stuck with me after reading.
I came away from this collection with a sort of sadness overpowered by a strong feeling of pride for women and what we can endure.
I would and will be recommending this to literally all my friends.
Thank you so much to Random House and Netgalley for the ARC, I am beyond grateful to have found a new and wonderful author to follow.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC to review!

4 stars!

This hit me in many ways, sometimes I chuckled, felt angry, sad, relatable, and so many more. The collection has lots of different things going within it but all linked to the female experience and what women have gone through, feel, do/have done, think, feel. There is so much in short ways that all give a punch.

Fantastic!

*Received an arc copy for an honest review.*

I am a weird girl, surreal writing, lover but unfortunately I didn't enjoy this one.

My main issue with the collection was that I found it was trying to do too much. While I liked the ideas, the writing was too on the nose for me. I think I prefer my themes/discussions to be more implicit opposed to the explicit commentary that was sometimes present within the prose of this collection.

The structure also didn’t work for me. I’m not sure how the order was chosen, and with the variation of genres, lengths and structures, I feel like too much was going on. The thread between them all became murky to me, and it made the impact lessen.

The collection took me a while to get through, but there were some promising and well written lines that I annotated. Radojevic has a knack for voice and I enjoyed the unique storytelling in some of the stories such as ‘Real Mothers’. The concepts of a lot of the stories were also very unique.

For me, the best stories were: ‘Real Mothers’, ‘How to Be Good and Love Yourself’, and ‘She Who Swallowed the Universe’.

An amazing short story collection. Every story makes you think about the struggle of womanhood and what it means to live in a world that is so against women and female presenting people. Truly filled with beautiful stories!!

Absolutely gorgeous. This made me laugh, gasp, and rage. Not always in that order. Radojevic has created a short story collection with a strong and clear narrative centering women and feminism. Her stories cover the expected topics, relationship dynamics, families, work, politics etc. They also touch on consumerism, nature, and fairy tales. There is a key story focusing on trans acceptance and there has never been a more important time for this.

This book jumped from contemporary, to dystopian, to sci-fi, to fantasy so brilliantly. Every writing technique and genre felt so purposeful for each story. No story felt out of place and even after finishing there a number that have stuck with me so strongly that I can't stop thinking about them.

This book made me feel proud to be a woman and I can't wait to buy this for all the men who have told me they don't understand, and for all the women in my life who have felt alone in their emotions.

Writing a short story collection is no easy feat but Monika Radojevic has set the bar for 2025.

A Beautiful Lack of Consequence is a brilliantly unique collection of short stories; united around the theme of the pressures and challenges of being a woman.

Each story was unpredictable, and overall it was unlike any collection of short stories I’ve read previously. Some of the stories were dark, others were wryly funny.

Weaponised Incompetence was one of my favourites, as well as Salt Badgers. An impressive and compelling debut.

With thanks to NetGalley and Random House, Cornerstone and Merky Books for the ARC.

‘I don’t know about you, but to me, a symphony of women in full-throated, belly-aching laughter is the most defiant, beautiful sound there is. It’s because the sound of our joy is also the sound of hope, and if we needed to, I think we could do it forever.’

Monika Radojevic’s short story collection bounces from remodelling the stagnant myths and fairytales that have shaped the perception of women throughout history, through to co-opting the very real fears that contemporary women contain within themselves each day.

Radojevic’s use of genre and technique flits between satire, dark humour and bathos to tackle the dystopian pasts, realities, and futures of the female experience. Throughout her thirty beautifully constructed tales, there are jump-scares, palate cleansers, and surrealist shifts that challenge how we perceive female experience and female anger, and what we can do when it comes to holding this knowledge within ourselves.

How does capitalism barricade attempts to secure women’s safety? How can childcare (read: badgers) and corporate careers co-exist? What on earth do we do about the bystander effect? I could list so many questions that Radojevic opens and explores within her narratives - there really are too many to note. However, it is clear that the burning statement is, indeed, her collection’s title that criticises the often horrifying lack of consequence of violence towards women. What Radojevic does with this title, though, is also subvert it towards redefining how this can also benefit women.

Radojevic’s writing style is visceral, stabbing, and necessary. Whilst she doesn’t provide answers to the questions she raises, her surrealist entry into thinking about these themes is highly provoking, and reading this collection felt like having my brain prodded and reshaped as if it were plasticine… (in a good way).

In her acknowledgements, Radojevic cites writers, such as Angela Carter, as influential predecessors for her writing style, and this is beautifully clear within this short story collection. However, whilst she adopts the thematic undercurrents of writers like Carter, Radojevic differentiates herself through her ability to stun the reader through her structural variation and enjoyably jarring humour.

I have given this collection a rating of 4.5 (rounded to 5) as, whilst I enjoyed it, it is not the sort of book I could devour in one hit due to its discussions of heavier topics. However, on this note, I really appreciated Radojevic’s structural splicing that interweaves what she calls ‘Palate Cleansers’. These super-short stories, flash fiction almost, of 1-2 pages disrupt the heaviness of prior tales and add either moments of poetic uplift or act as turning points to the existing mood.

If you love collections that thematise girlhood, untangle female experience, articulate rage, and playfully exploit and subvert allegories, then you’ll love this short story collection.

'She was fierce, with a pair of wings, but somewhere along the way she sold them'.

'A Beautiful Lack of Consequence', is a book of short stories in different genres, and of varied length (some are simply a paragraph) but all have a feminist theme to them. Some of the stories are angry, some are dismayed and resigned, yet others are frustrated vents and some are simply thoughtful musings'.

With titles like, 'Man in a Can' and fairytale twists on offer, 'The free accommodation was handy, for sure, especially after I'd run away with literally nothing except for the clothes on my back. But taking care of seven men? That lost its shine on day two...', there really is something for every mood. I appreciated the story about the girl who begins to become aware of her looks and her body as a teenager, and how this focus changes and morphs over time as she becomes a young woman, a mother, a middle-aged and then an old woman. I think many of us can relate with a sense of sadness, 'I spent years obsessing about how good I'd look when I was older and now I'd do anything to go back a decade'.

This is definitely a 'pick up' and 'put down' book as the mood takes you. I found many of its messages so true and poignant as well as wry and thoughtful.

'The world is not safe for us, not built for us, not changing fast enough for us'.

I usually hate short story collections, but this one has changed my opinion on these types of books. Radojevic spun these individual stories together so well, although there was no direct relevance I really felt the threads that kept these characters connected. I adored the longer form ones, a few of these would make fantastic novellas or even full length books. I also liked the step into fantasy and horror some of the later ones took, they were experimental but they worked.

All these stories had one thing in common, their commentary on women. From first person perspectives to short conversations, every story told an unflinching and familiar narrative, one that left me feeling seen and understood but slightly unnerved. This take was my favourite part of these stories, no matter how short or character/plot focused each story was, I knew there was a message there. Relevant, timely and bold, this is a collection that pulls no punches and was a thrill to read.

Monika Radojevic’s debut short story collection is one of the most exciting books to be released in 2025. Across thirty striking tales, Radojevic weaves themes of womanhood, identity, violence, and power; all through a thrillingly funny and intersectional feminist lens.

The stories in this collection are going to rattle around my brain for many days/ months/ years to come. They combine the surreal with the ordinary in both startlingly original and exciting prose. There is not a wasted word on any page, and with all of these stories being so captivating, it is difficult to be able to pick a favourite. What I do know, however, is I will not be able to get demanding salt badgers, little girls with AR-15s, the dildo limit in Texas, and the ever so clitoral, Gwyneth, out of my head for a long time.

A Beautiful Lack of Consequence is sure to have something for everyone, but fans of Angela Carter, Sayaka Murata, Lucia Berlin, and Ocean Vuong, may just find their new favourite contemporary prose writer in the pages of Radojevic’s work.

This is a book that, once read, will compel you to purchase for all the women (and men!) you know and love.

Monika has written a set of 30 short stories which all focus on the lives of women. Women are at the centre of every story. Sometimes these stories are a little dystopian, sometimes historical, sometimes they are set in the present day. And in between these stories? Mini alternative stories of famous mythological women as well as “lovely” things that are said to us on a daily basis.

My first thoughts? I want to put this into the hands of every woman I know.

My middle-of-the-book thoughts? How can I get this book into the hands of every woman I know?

My final thoughts? I want to lend this book to every woman I know but I also never want it to leave my bookshelf because I want to show it to every woman who comes into my home.

Every page in this book was my favourite page and I’m taking all ideas as to how I can read this book again for the first time.

No matter where you are on your journey of womanhood you will find a relatable story within these pages. This anthology is a masterpiece that captures the female experience in a uniquely metaphorical light.

I almost DNF’d the book 5 pages in. Salt badgers? WTF? I don’t have time for this. Then I realized I have two salt badgers of my own & the story resonated deeply with my journey through motherhood.

I want to give this work 5 stars, but some of the stories are lackluster compared to the standouts & a few are taken from the author’s previous book.

I adored this book - one of my favourite reads so far this year. I absolutely devoured it in the space of a few hours. A thoughtful, introspective but darkly funny at times look at what it means to be a woman right now. A relevant book for all women and girls at all stages of life. Some stories were funny, some tragic, some satirical but all moving in their own way. I enjoyed the fairytale character/goddess/mythical creature interludes and the palate cleansers after the more disturbing and thought provoking stories. Thank you so much to the publisher and to NetGalley for providing an ARC for this book.

Alexa play Taylor Swift - The Tortured Poet’s Department while I read A Beautiful Lack of Consequence! It’s giving girlhood, female rage, lived female experience et al. This is going to be talked about when it’s released and I’m giddy that I’ve already read it through once. I need a copy on my bookshelf come March (that cover though 😍)

A big thank you to, Random House UK, Cornerstone + Merky Books for the opportunity to read this before it’s published on 20th March 2025 #ABeautifulLackofConsequence #NetGalley

A Beautiful Lack of Consequence is a delightful collection of short stories that explores many issues relevant to women. From navigating relationships to confronting societal expectations, Monika Radojevic crafts narratives that resonate deeply, celebrating both the ordinary and extraordinary moments that shape our lives.

Each story offers a unique perspective, and even the ones that stressed me out left a lasting impression, making the collection all the more compelling.

Gorgeous. Emotive. Relatable.

It took me a while to figure out how the stories were connected but each one spoke to relatable experiences and the echoes of girlhood, motherhood, womanhood and the bits in between. I can’t remember the last time I cried because of a book but the final chapter had me in bits. Radojevic has captured so many emotions and experiences in these pages. There’s a surrealist quality to them and the images play out in your mind like a telenovela. I could have read a full book on every chapter.

As with any short story collection, there were highs and lows, but the highs in this one were so, so good. I almost wish a few of them were expanded into full books rather than short stories. Highly recommended.

I love a short story. I believe an individual who can tell a compelling narrative in ten pages is one whom should be granted great power over us mere mortals (who may require over five hundred pages to achieve the same). In this vain, I can proudly declare that Monika Radojevic, in her DEBUT short story collection, demonstrates emphatically why she should be prime minister of this island nation! Like her poetry collection which precedes this work, Radojevic’s pen proves both elegant and fierce; undercut with a sharp comedic flourish.

These short stories, interjected with pieces of flash fiction, interweave the domestic and the sublime effortlessly. The thematic explorations Radojevic presents in each of her tales paint a vivid narrative, reminding the reader of the uncanny reality of women living in patriarchy.

This book is for everyone, however fans of Angela Carter, Carol Ann Duffy, and Lydia Davis will likely find something refreshingly reminiscent in Radojevic’s collection. Specifically, the stories seem to take prevalent gothic themes and smash them into fairy tales, mythology, magical realism, and of course the ‘ordinary’.

I employ any readers of this review who have not yet read this collection to not take the above as gospel, read the book, and then come back and see how correct I am.
