PART 2 IN THE CHROMOSOME TRILOGY COMING SUMMER 2025
Recommended to me by someone in my book group, this isn’t the genre of book I’d normally read. Although billed as young adult fiction, it was perfectly engaging as a not-so-young adult! Such well-written characters - I loved Cara - and a plot which left me looking forward to reading book 2. Highly recommend.
In 2061, the world changes and all the social norms, morality and even basic empathy are destroyed. The unthinkable happens. A worldwide virus targets only men, or as they are now known, Ys. At first, there is just death but then it alters. The men are morphing into monsters. And killing anyone in their path, including their families. Myla and her little sister Cara are children when the epidemic sweeps the land, and society falls. They are opposite, both in looks and temperament. Dark and light. Cara still retains her humanity, but Myla harbours a deep trauma from her childhood that Cara can’t remember. Now twisted, Myla hates the Ys. Clawing her way to the top, she controls a small city with brute force and fear, backed by the female Xs. She dominates everyone and designates the Ys with colours and numbers, to further prove that with no name, they are not regarded as human. True, each Y has a chance of mutating into a lizard, a Saurian. It only takes twelve seconds, as Myla well knows. But she can never think of them as victims, too. Cara trains the female warriors, the Recruits, hard but is highly respected. Then, we learn that Cara is harbouring a secret. Love has been replaced by fear and hate. But can love be rekindled in this new and frightening world? The book follows several character viewpoints as we see the journey Cara and the others, both Xs and Ys, have to travel to find somewhere safe where the Ys can be treated equally. It’s a long and dangerous path, especially where Myla is concerned. This wonderful book covers what lengths a new society must go to, to preserve itself. Can you be a strong leader, having to make terrible decisions and still have compassion for the people you fear? For the people who have hurt you? Can you turn into a monster while endeavouring to fight real monsters? What constitutes a monster? And what if you’re on the other side? Knowing that, for whatever reason, you might suddenly turn into a giant lizard and kill the ones you love. Are you entitled to the same rights? Can you have a life you’ve only dreamed of? Find out in this hard-hitting book. I can’t wait for book 2 to find out what will happen next.
I really enjoyed reading this book and found it an easy book to get into from the start. It is set in 2061 and we are in the city of Galex which is faced with a problem of epidemic proportions. If you have a Y chromosome, making you a man, then you are at more risk of dying or mutation. Women, X chromosome, rule the city and are the fighters. They have made the men slaves so they do all the menial jobs, running around and hunting for food. They are trying for a vaccine but have yet to be successful. Also, Cara, the protector, is in love with a man which is forbidden. She has a secret that will prove problematic for her once found out and make her man’s life threatened. This story is a brilliant read and kept me hooked the entire time I was reading it till the finish. I just loved it. The storyline was great and very well thought out. It was excellently plotted out and extremely well written. The characters are great and well rounded. Myla has a hard side to her nature and is manipulative and controlling whilst Cara has a kind nature, this shows through in the writing of the story. I preferred Cara of the two. I look forward to the next book in the story, due out next year.

Well, sheesh. This is quite brutal from the get-go. I kind of wondered as I started reading what the men in this authors life had done to her! For the monster in the book is the Y, the half of humanity that is unlucky enough to have a Y chromosome. Admittedly, some transform into lizard type Saurons and kill their families. Myla and Cara were just children when the plague swept the nation. Myla is strong and takes on the role of leader. Sometimes, she seems to enjoy it too much and scares Cara, especially with the secret she's concealing. This is a brilliant look at a post-apocalyptic landscape. It is an interesting take with trying to rebuild having removed all men. It's also trust and betrayal, being a leader vs. showing humanity. Family and whether blood is really thicker than water. There is also the viewpoint of the so-called victims. Can you expect them to stand by and say or do nothing. This is book one of a trilogy, I think, and I'm intrigued to see where it goes next.
A fast paced dystopian story set in a future where something terrible has divided men and women. I was engrossed from the start and read this in a couple of sittings as I had to know what would happen. Although the relationship between a double X and a Y is at the centre of the story, the world they live in is vividly believable and the fight for freedom and equality is never overshadowed by romance. I look forward to the next part of this trilogy.
