Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name. See this thread for more information.

Eleanor Alice Burford, Mrs. George Percival Hibbert was a British author of about 200 historical novels, most of them under the pen name Jean Plaidy which had sold 14 million copies by the time of her death. She chose to use various names because of the differences in subject matter between her books; the best-known, apart from Plaidy, are Victoria Holt (56 million) and Philippa Carr (3 million). Lesser known were the novels Hibbert published under her maiden name Eleanor Burford, or the pseudonyms of Elbur Ford, Kathleen Kellow and Ellalice Tate. Many of her readers under one penname never suspected her other identities.

Re-read of an old favorite for the Modern Mrs Darcy 2017 challenge... love Victoria Holt and this is classic her. If you read enough of her stuff, you see patterns and similarities. The last time I read this was many years ago, like 15 maybe? And that was probably the second or third time to read it then. Anyway, I was immediately pulled into the story and quickly turning pages until I finished (despite having read it before). Suewellyn, our main heroine, goes through a lot in this story and the settings are pretty interesting. They range from a small cottage to a rangy castle in England all the way to an island off Australia. It's maybe a little predictable, but I didn't care a bit. Her books are gothic, suspense, mystery and romance swirled together and are relaxing reads. I hope to re-read a few of her other books this year for fun!

This book has a lot of the things that I've come to dislike about VH's books. The long opening chapters about the heroine's childhood and family. The non-appearance of the hero until page 100 or 150 or worse. The lack of any passion, even passionate kissing. The hard-to-believe or totally absent ILY's. The first-person POV.

Still, still... I enjoyed this one. The volcanic island scenes were good, maybe cuz you just knew what was gonna happen. The heroine's impersonation - will she/won't she get away with it? The suspicious hero. The deadly family secrets. The taciturn servant. The gradual revelation of the impersonated woman's true character. Is the hero a murderer? Even the first-person POV works, as you feel the net tightening along with the heroine. I was totally absorbed and had to keep reading to see what would happen.

The heroine is likable, and sympathetic despite her deceit. Unfortunately the hero didn't make a strong impression. I never felt I got to know him. And the romance suffers.

So I'm torn. As a romance, it's barely 2*. But as a cracking good read, it's 4*.

PS. hero and heroine are second cousins, from what I can make of the convoluted family tree. So don't read if that kind of thing squicks your boat.

A mixed bag; some parts were very enjoyable, others either dragged unto zzzz or rushed through key action sequences. It's definitely not Vicky's best work.

Unlike most GR reviewers, I actually liked the lengthy section about the heroine's mother--our current romance-reading climate paints infidelity & adultery as The Worst Sins Possible No Matter What, so imo it's important to remind readers that sometimes good people make mistakes & (god forbid) commit adultery while being aware that their actions could potentially wound other good people. But infidelity is NOT the worst sin, as villainous Susannah proves.

...That being said, the titular masquerade doesn't begin until the final third, & is (alas) the weakest & most rushed portion of the novel. I also found myself growing impatient with a heroine who knowingly takes on the role of a bitchy moo, but then repeatedly neglects to make a token effort at being remotely bitchy. She never argues, flirts, acts selfish, or even makes a single semi-rude remark--how can this ruse possibly succeed?! Sure, she wouldn't have known the depths of Susannah's machinations, but did *did* know she was selfish, seductive, & rude. You gotta make at least some effort, girl. 🙄 It's no wonder she didn't fool anyone.

The first half is good--while reading, I wondered why this one had been skipped over while others were resurrected & reissued as attractive trade paperbacks. But as I progressed, the reason for said neglect became clear. It's an okay read, but there are much better Holts.

I knew I had read a few Victoria Holt novels back in the nineteen eighties or there about and sure enough halfway through this one I realized I had read it before. However, I finished it anyway to refresh my memory on how it ended. Holt spends a good yarn and she didn't let me down in this book. Victoria Holt has a wonderful talent of inventing ways for the story to keep moving even when it appears she is headed towards a dead end scenario. It's short and a good read. Try it if you love nineteenth century romance novels with a bit of adventure thrown in.

Victoria Holt really never ceases to amaze me. The Mask of the Enchantress is about Suewellyn, a girl who spends her formative years being raised by a couple she calls her Aunt and Uncle, but knows they are not really related to her. She spends the beginning of her life really unsure about who she is or where she comes from, and her childhood is flecked with visits from a beautiful woman named Miss Annabel. As you can probably surmise fairly early on, Miss Annabel is actually Suewellyn's mother, and she had Suewellyn out of wedlock with the second son of the great Mateland family who controls the local town. One night Annabel comes and hurries Suewellyn awake and has her pack quickly, Suewelyn's father, Joel, has done something terrible and now the small family must flee if they want to be together. The three of them settle on a small island off the coast of Australia and Suewellyn has a much happier life than the bleak one she shared with her Aunt and uncle (who turned out to be former servants to Annabel) but still she can't help but wonder what her life was supposed to be like if she has been raised as she should have been; as a Mateland. Suewellyn is in Sidney for a wedding when she discovers tragedy has struck, and suddenly she has the opportunity to find out exactly what her life was supposed to be like, only she can't return to her family home as herself. This is a fantastic novel, and while a lot can be anticipated, it's still wonderful to read as Suewellyn's life unfolds before you.

Books written by Victoria Holt are so cheesy, but sometimes that's exactly what you need. I've read a loooot of her books when I was 14/15 years old..that was the last time I've read them. I absolutely loved them at the time. I'm thinking of reading one of her books just for the old times sake! =)

my comments in video: https://youtu.be/tuIKtQ_LOiM

Touching childish tenderness.
A true gem, just as the publisher presents it, in which the author creates a narrative so deeply rooted in childhood that she managed to move me to tears. Although the second part left me disappointed for not developing all the potential it had, I think it is also an interesting work that awakened many relationships with other works read, such as "Silas Marner", Marianela, "Out of Africa", the O'Neil's theater, thereby evoking entertaining, profound and moving images.
I liked it so much that I'm going to look for other works by the author.
I look forward to your comments.

Conmovedora ternura infantil.

3.5 stars. So darn solid.

At the end of Holt books, I press the book to my chest. I sigh with satisfaction because even if there were parts that didn't sing for me, she still has a way with words that sweeps me off my feet. Will this book go down as one of my all-time reads of hers? No. But did she have me eager the whole time? Yes.

Also, that sounded more sexual than I intended. Not a euphemism.

It's the last third of this book that actually tells the story. The first 2/3s is, essentially, backstory. I think the backstory wasn't as necessary in terms of how long it went. I was way more interested in what happened to the main character in real time. Her romance with the potential lord of the castle was palpitating and the book needed more of that. The heroine needed more time in the strange old castle, surrounded by low intentions, mystery, and murder.

But was the book well-written? Yes. Will I remember parts of it for a long time? Yes. Was it a page-turner with surprises? Yep. Should you read some Holt? Yes.

A friend sent me a copy of this book, by the extremely prolific Victoria Holt. I read many a Victoria Holt (and her other pen names) in high school. I was a voracious reader even then, but had to adhere to the school policy regarding numbers of books checked out. I'd check out my maximum each week, and then, during study hall, curl up in the stacks with a selection I'd pull from the shelf and put back when the bell rang each day, until that book was done, then pick out another one. Back then, the nom de plumes for Eleanor Hibbert were not widely known. I remember telling my mother that Victoria Holt, Jean Plaidy, and Phillipa Carr all sounded the same though they wrote about different times.

It was fun to re-read an author and a book I loved as a teenager. It presents the same innocent kind of romance (despite death and danger) that I find in Georgette Heyer's mysteries (and her regency novels, too.)

As duas estudaram e conviveram desde pequeninas.

Suwellyn lives in a small village and is raised by her aunt and uncle. Aunt Amelia is pretty strict and Suwellyn looks forward to the visits of Miss Annabel who is gay and happy and brings her gifts. On her seventh birthday, Miss Annabel takes her on a train journey on a picnic. There she meets a handsome man called Joel and they have a fancy picnic. Through the trees, they can see a real life castle which seems magical to the little girl. She secretly wishes that Miss Annabel was her mother and her wish comes true.

Suwellyn is really a Mateland, born out of wedlock to Annabel and Joel. They sail the seas to Australia and on to Vulcan, a remote volcanic island in the South Seas. Joel is a doctor and wants to help people. Island life is very different, but the Matelands slowly settle down and make a place for themselves among the locals. Suwellyn is sent off to school when she is thirteen where she meets Laura. Laura becomes her staunch friend and often invites her to their property or station.

The Mask of the Enchantress has all the elements of a true Victoria Holt novel. The impoverished heroine, scheming relations, a long sea journey, heartbreak, loss, and the constant anticipation and suspense that gives you goose bumps. Since so much happens across the course of the novel, it is hard to figure out how much of the story to share without giving away too many spoilers.

I picked up this book at a book give away at our local county fair. I chose it as I have read many of Victoria Holt's books, but it has been a long time since I read any of them. I was pleasantly surprised as I just thought of Holt's books as "castle romance." This book did have a castle and romance, but it also had murder, mystery, and a story that went from England, to Australia, and New Zealand and back.
I felt the book gave a good picture of life in the nineteeth century. This includes things like what was expected of behavior and marriage, what it was like to travel, and how it was when none of the communications we have today were available.
The main character, Suewellyn Mateland, lives with an "aunt" and "uncle" in a small town. A rich looking "aunt" comes to visit her several times a year. One day, the rich "aunt" comes to visit and takes her away forever. She turns out to be Suewellyn's mom and they meet Suewellyn's father and travel by boat to Australia and then a small island near New Zealand. Suewellyn's evil half sister, Susannah, eventually finds them and causes problems in their lives. While Suewellyn is visiting the mainland, a volcano erreups and kills her family. Suewellyn is compelled to assume her sister's idenity and this leads to all kinds of adventures and complications. (plus makes for a good story)

Me encantó.

Suewellen's story was a fun read but I didn't like her mom's story at all. I enjoyed seeing her struggle with decisions and whom to trust. I liked that there was a little bit of mystery she had to figure out, but it seemed pretty obvious to me! Granted her story wouldn't be the same without her parents story, but a depressing family to belong to!

Spoiler** Her mom's story reads like this: have an affair with your cousin's husband, run away together with your daughter (that you had out of wedlock and have hidden for 6 years)after he kills his brother. Live with the crushing guilt for years. Dies in volcano eruption. Sad, pathetic life.

My mother loaned me this book with the promise of "It's so amazing!"
It was not. The whole novel felt like what "Leave It To Beaver"'s mom would read if she wanted something "racy". It felt like a 60s version of bad Danielle Steel.
Overall, my mother was a big fat liar on this one. That's a few hundred pages of read time I'm never getting back.

Not as good as I remembered it being. The first half DRAGS on and on about her childhood and moving to the island. So does the clump explaining her parent's relationship, it just went on and on and on. The second half feels like a second book tacked on with her taking on her half-sister's persona, which was very unbelievable because they were SO different.

I read all of Victoria Holt mystery/romance books in my 30s. Holt books are a higher caliber of romance fiction than something like Harlequins. Historically accurate. Good recreational reading with something to keep you turning pages.

This is proof that I'll read almost anything, though Victoria Holt's storytelling goes down easily. Unfortunately it is also predictable and redundant. This is a 19th-century poorly done remake of Josephine Tey's Brat Farrar with gothic overtones.

I really enjoyed this one. It has been awhile since I've read one of her books. Actually, I probably have read them all but I didn't remember this one. I think that it is probably one of her best! A mystery-romance page turner!
