Review: L.K. Gardner-Griffie is a profound writer that knows teenagers so well! Both of her novels address very real issues of teenagers today and her heroine, Katie McCabe is fantastic. These books make for a great read for youngsters 14 and older. Both, Pearson Prize, Teen Choice Award winners they are by far some of the best, realistic teen novels I have read.
This definitely appealed to the teen girl in me, McCabe had real feeling that were understandable and difficult, from the moment her father died the tears for me just steam rolled down, i really sympathised with her and i understood what she was going to and that line i knew i didnt need to get their love i already had it...wow so strong powerful. the writing was ok not great and some parts were a bit dated but a good read
A story brimming with all the right ingredients for that ‘awkward’ age: growing up, relationships, finding a place in the world…
Packed with action from the start, this well written tale will have readers wanting to turn the pages.
I particularly liked the underlying humour, although mixed with a seriousness that borders the disturbing events, it shines enough to give us a glimpse of the true identity of the heroine…one to like and champion.
My daughter really related to the character of Katie. I haven't yet read this book, but it was a page-turner for my daughter and prompted some great mother/daughter discussions between us.
