Holly does, in spite of everything that’s happened in her life. Sometimes the thought that her soulmate is out there is the only thing that keeps her going.
Then she hears her favourite song being played. She’s drawn to where the sound is coming from, as if by a magnetic force. There is a handsome young man sitting at a public piano, who smiles at her, and she feels that spark she’s always dreamt of. She asks if she can join him, and sings along, seeing his face light up.
He’s called Mark, she later discovers. And he feels the same. They both feel like they’ve been hit with a thunderbolt. But even though it seems like they’ve known each other for lifetime, the truth is that they’re strangers.

A change of style ( well imo anyway 😊 ) for this author with this book
I would class this as a thriller/ suspense read more than psychological although there are some elements of that in it as well
We meet Holly who has had an unfortunate past, she then meets Mark who interestingly is on a mission to play all free pianos in train stations, and they more than click….big time….but Holly is already with Finn but as Mark finds out she is not happy…..but can Mark make her happier or is there more to this piano maestro than meets the eye and will Holly regret what she is about to embark on.?
Domestic abuse does feature albeit briefly in this book and I think it is the authors darkest book to date, offset by a bit of humour from ‘Archie’ who you will meet
I read quickly as wanted to see how the story ended,an unsettling but good ending then an even better second ending😎😎
Nothing original or memorable. Just another story around abusive relationship, unreliable narrators, predictable outcomes and terrible conclusion.
As for the writing, it’s very simple and perhaps a bit pedestrian.
Although written in third person, there were plenty of inner dialogues.
This was a fast read, but I can sincerely say this one was not for me. However, I wanted to see how the story was going to end.
I have only read it because someone recommended it, after giving 5 raving stars.
The story and the unlikeable characters were not well developed and there was no suspenseful atmosphere, in my opinion.
All characters had that “victim” mentality, which made the narrative quite repetitive.
This was my first book by this author (and I’m glad it was part of Kindle unlimited- meaning no extra cost) and I may try her books (if I remember to).
e-book (Kindle): 323 pages (default), 88k words
PS. I should have trusted my judgement when I first saw the cover, which I disliked immensely.
Holly finds herself in an impossible situation. She is a victim of domestic abuse. Her abusive partner traps her, and her freedom continues to dwindle. One night, she stumbles upon someone playing a piano and it is her favorite song. She joins the pianist while he is singing, and they instantly connect. But what about her home life? And what secrets does she harbor that could jeopardize everything?
The man playing the beautiful song is Mark. Could Mark be her soulmate? Meanwhile, Mark has his own agenda. Will they build a life together or face a premature end?
This intriguing story delves into obsession, and with some shocking twists, the story was interesting. However, something about it threw me off. At one point, a couple knocks on Mark’s door. In his mind, he thinks, “Oh, Jehovah’s Witnesses.” From then on, the couple are referred to as Jehovah’s Witnesses. However, as a Jehovah’s Witness of five decades, I can confidently say that the couple’s actions and behavior at Mark’s home were entirely inaccurate. This inconsistency pulled me out of the story, so I must give it a lower rating.
Many thanks to Boldwood Books and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
Well, this starts out like two young people falling in love with each other. Let me tell you this is very different than it starts out. I could hardly put it down, and I recommend it to anyone who loves a good thriller
THE SOULMATE BY RONA HALSALL. Release date set for the 30th of January 2025. This author has a fair few books out and a few of them books are in my TBR pile and I believe this is my first one I've actually read so far. I found this book intriguing throughout. I Thought it was a slow burn kinda book and it ends with an almighty bang. I Will be reading more of this authors books in the very near future
This is one of the most dramatic stories I’ve read in a long time, there are so many twists and turns, you just don’t know what will happen next, I could not wait to read the next chapter.
This was the first book I’ve read by Rona Halsall and I’ll definitely be reading more. It was a quick, addictive read with short chapters that made it easy to fly through. I found myself constantly picking it up to see what would happen next.
The story follows Holly, who’s been through a lot but still believes in love at first sight. When she hears her favourite song playing, she’s drawn toward it and meets Mark at the piano. The connection is instant, but despite the spark between them, both are keeping secrets, and it soon becomes clear that not everything is as it seems.
It’s a story about fate, trust, and how much of ourselves we’re willing to reveal. A really enjoyable read that kept me engaged from start to finish.
The Soulmate by Rona Halsall is a nerve-wracking psychological thriller that will make you shake your head and take a deep breath so many times that it will become a permanent action. Like seriously! Unbelievable! There were some parts that that was uneasy as DV was involved but luckily this wasn't a focus of this story so I breathed through them.
It's so easy to follow this story, with no confusion between characters or timelines. I demolished it in one sitting! So don't start before sleep!
Holly is running from her past mistakes and gets trapped in an unfortunate situation without a way out. Mark is a single guy who loves music and looking for love. When Holly sees Mark sitting at a public piano she can't stay away and joins him with a beautiful singing... There is all you want and need - sparks and butterflies and uncontrollable heart beating... are they soulmates? As if things would be so easy... Holly needs to run like Cinderella before midnight and Mark is left there waiting... Will he try to find her? Can they be together?
It sounds like a love story but I promise you it is not! Blood will be splashed, someone will die and someone will be a kiIIer, just who?
This is my third by this author. Probably my last. I will say I was glad there was a bit of a twist because the instalove really made this a near DNF. Author has a very simple style of writing and personally I find the characters completely unconvincing on all levels, but I can see how this could work for someone who wants a quick easy read (think Freida McFadden level of storytelling). It wasn’t a total disaster. I read the whole thing and quickly, I cared enough to see how the story ended, but I was just unmoved and suspending disbelief a lot of the time.
Erin has been on the run for many years. To keep her past well behind her, she assumes the identity of "Holly."
Holly is on the run again when she's walking in a mall and hears someone beautifully playing the piano. The male pianist somehow has played her favorite Lenny Kravitz songs so she feels a pull toward the piano. Weighing her need to stay under the radar and being calmed by singing, she throws caution to the wind and decides to sing alongside the piano player.
The male pianist, Mark, experiences "love at first note" - he's absolutely entranced by Holly's voice. Mark travels around the world playing various famous pianos, posting his adventures on social media. However, when Mark asks Holly's permission to post their performance, she quickly says no. Instead, she hands him her phone so he can share their performance directly with her. From there, the two communicate through DM's.
Holly currently lives with Finn, someone who was kind enough to offer her a place to stay when she had no other options but would be furious to discover she was talking to someone, let alone a man. While Holly thought he was fun and handsome in the beginning, over time, he's become aggressive and extremely possessive. Holly has to figure a way out of his controlling grip.
Does the instant connection Holly feels toward Mark change her thoughts in soulmates? Will Mark become the life-line Holly needs to escape Finn or will she take matters into her own hands?
I always look forward to a new Rona Halsall thriller! I make sure to request them the second I see one available. This time around, I rated this a three and a half star read that I'll bump up to four stars. I was hooked right away but felt the ending went a little off the rails - like off the rails enough that it started to feel a little silly. However, it was still a fun read and one that I would recommend to fellow thriller readers. Rona Halsall has a great catalogue of works that I'd also recommend!
The Soulmate makes for a suspenseful mystery that keeps you turning the pages but ultimately left me with mixed feelings. On one hand, the author does a great job at building a tense, believable atmosphere. The suspense is palpable throughout the whole book, and the writing and prose are solid, as always from Halsall.
However, the plot’s reliance on withholding critical truths from the reader or misleading us with a character’s inner thoughts made the twists feel frustrating rather than satisfying. It’s a narrative technique I find off-putting; I feel like it undermines the sense of fairness in the mystery. Instead of feeling cleverly surprised, I was left questioning why the characters’ thoughts weren’t more reflective of their true motivations.
Interestingly, I felt more intrigued by Mark than the actual whodunnit plot.
Overall, The Soulmate is a decent read that I’d still recommend to fans of psychological thrillers who enjoy all the suspense, but with the caveat that it may not satisfy readers who prefer more grounded twists.
Holly has a very colourful past and is known for running when the going gets tough, she's currently planning on doing it again to escape her controlling boyfriend Finn, and she heads to Glasgow to collect her new passport.
Mark is playing the piano in a shopping mall in Glasgow when Holly is drawn to him playing her favourite song. The attraction between them is instant and they each wonder if the other could be their soulmate, but she can't risk getting involved with anyone else and she heads back to Dumfries, certain that's the end of it, until Mark turns up on her doorstep a few days later...
The Soulmate is the latest domestic thriller by this author and what an absolute rollercoaster it is! I was totally hooked on this tense and chilling read right from the first page and to begin with I couldn't say for certain where my loyalties lay, there was definitely a creepy vibe about Mark and, as the story progressed, I was definitely leaning more towards #teamholly, especially when the author divulged what happened in her past. This is a fast paced read which touches briefly on the subject of domestic abuse but thankfully doesn't go into too much detail. Halsall also injected some humour into the tale with the antics from Archie the parrot which provided a brief reprieve from all the tension. This is a story that is full of twists and turns with a very satisfactory ending, which I highly recommend.
I'd like to thank Boldwood Books and Netgalley for the approval, I will post my review on Goodreads and Amazon.
Holly hears a man playing a piano, singing her favourite song, and is immediately drawn to him. She finds out he is called Mark and truly believes he is her soulmate, luckily he feels the same. The only problem is that they both have secrets. Will they end up as perfect for each other as they first thought?
Having discovered this author fairly recently and really enjoying the books I have read so far by her, I was excited to get my hands on her new thriller. She hasn’t disappointed so far! I was drawn into this book after the first few chapters and was really engaged with the writing style and overall mystery.
The character’s are strongly written, I honestly never knew who to trust and where the story was going. I enjoy it when thrillers start to go in unexpected, unsettling directions and Rona Halsall always manages to do this well. The ending comes together well and all in all, this was another very satisfying, entertaining thriller. Thanks to NetGalley and this publisher for this copy in return for an honest review.
Big thanks to Boldwood Books for a copy on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. The Soulmate is a tale of obsession, love and lies. Holly is in a difficult situation and running from the past. She meets Mark and sparks ignite. Could they possibly be soulmates…. But there’s a problem, Holly has a possessive and dangerous boyfriend, Finn. Then a series of events change everything and soon their lives will never be the same again….. This started off very unbelievable and slow, then did a little turn around and finished quite good. It’s not my favourite of Rona’s but I was invested enough to want to know the outcome. I found the last 80 pages was the most interesting. A fair, quick and simple read.
This was a very tense read, throughout the book I was changing my mind constantly about who I should be believing. Holly and Mark meet when he's playing the piano at Glasgow Railway station, she joins him to sing and then they go for coffee. Mark wants to meet again but Holly explains her boyfriend Finn is very jealous. From the start I sensed that they both were withholding secrets from each other but could never have imagined how big those secrets could be or the consequences of their actions. Another brilliantly written thriller from Rona.
I felt this was a different style of writing for this author and in my opinion one of her best books. I loved how she portrayed the two main characters and I loved being inside their minds as they plotted the next step. I thought they were great characters and I had a good laugh too at how they reacted when things didn’t go according to plan. The ending was most satisfying and you were kept guessing right to the end. I’m sure the author had great fun writing this book and I highly recommend it.
I was fortunate to receive a copy of this ARC from Rachel's Random Resources.
Holly meets Mark while he is playing a piano in the street and she is trying to escape her abusive partner. Mark seems like the perfect gentleman who just wants to help Holly. Frankly, I thought Mark was a right drip at the start! His behaviour was very odd and there were definite red flags to me, but as we get to know the characters more, we find out the dark side to both of them and where this might lead.
My favourite quote: "Sometimes life just hurled a whole stream of lemons and there was absolutely no lemonade you could make."
The Soulmate is a quick thriller. The premise was engaging but the story didn't quite deliver for me.
Not wanting to give spoilers so I will say that Holly and Mark meet while he is playing the piano and singing. This sets off a series of unfortunate events.
There is not a lot of tension since you know relatively early that there are issues. It is more about watching how this will unfold. Parts of the book were slow but once it got moving it moved very quickly.
Overall, this is a quick read. If you enjoy thrillers this is one you are likely to enjoy.
This book took me on a roller coaster ride from the very beginning! Ones who appear to be good often have a very dark side. It seems the lines between good and evil are very blurred in this story!
* thank you to net galley for providing me with an e-arc in return for an honest review*
This was so good and engaging….once you get past the 20% mark. I so nearly put it down but I’m really glad I didn’t. I know a lot of people like setting the scene beforehand so will probably still enjoy it for the first 20% too, I’m just feral for action haha. The main character had me SOOOOO frustrated throughout but that just added to the angst of the book and my frustration made it better.
This story starts off in one direction then veers into another causing quite the crash! The protagonist is seeking ways to leave her abusive boyfriend, and she is finally rescued by the man of her dreams! Her “soulmate”. There are red herrings and unreliable narrators in this quick read. I enjoyed it!
This was a decent read. It goes to show that you can’t trust very many people! I wouldn’t say I’d consider this a thriller, but it was an enjoyable read.
This book was thrilling from start to finish. Holly was living with a violent man, when she met Mark, who was playing the piano and singing. I liked how it became very complicated and made me doubt everything and everything that was happening. The psychology was exceptionally well done.
