The Devil Wears Baccarat: An African American Romance

Rate this book
I’m not a good man, no matter what some women might say, and I don’t pretend to be. I am who I am, and I accept that. I don’t tolerate disrespect, and I always go after what I want—usually, I get it. You’ll never hear me call myself an alpha male. Maybe a monster, or sometimes devilish when I spray on a little Baccarat. But no matter what Kenya Jones says, she is MINE.

Fear is not something I’m accustomed to. I’ve been heartbroken, cheated on, and I’m a survivor. I’ve been through the worst and still stand tall. I can handle almost anything—except Alexandur Bucur. He is the devil in a suit, a man so dark he makes you believe monsters still exist. His actions terrify me, but the scent of Baccarat on his skin entices me. It lingers on my pillows long after he’s gone. He makes my heart flutter like a high school crush. When I close my eyes, he’s there, his strong fingers tracing down my cheekbones and into the curve of my neck. At work, his scent lingers in my nose. I am Kenya Jones, and this isn’t a love story for the weak.

"The Devil Wears Baccarat" by Jatoria C. is a breathtaking dark interracial romance for women who love dark romance, possessive alpha men, and intense love stories.

There is no portion of this book that I enjoyed. The title is even a reach! The scent Baccarat is only mentioned once and this is not an African American romance…I mean how can it be if the MMC is Romanian? There is so much repetition and redundancy throughout the entire book! The same word can appear three to five times within one paragraph. There are a few typos and lazy writing (the mention of having Mirena birth control in the FMC’s arm when this specific IUD is inserted into the uterus).

The thing that really bothered me was the way the MMC kept breaking character. There is very limited use of contractions and slang on Alexander’s chapters, however out of nowhere he starts using “y’all”. It sounds completely out of place for a Romanian Mafia capo to use “y’all” and even worse reading a scene where he says “doing eighty in a fifty f**k a ticket” BFFR!!!

Other things that annoyed me:
1. The continued mentioning of “iPhone”! I picked up my iPhone. I unlocked my iPhone. What is the reason?
2. Trying to make the book current: buying Arabian perfume from the TikTok shop, going to the movies to see Bad Boy 4 and kaleidoscope hair products. It was just doing too much for me.

The plot is ok I guess, but the twists and turns were just too unrealistic. They basically fell in love with little interaction because the MMC said so. The entire first sex scene is INSANE! After every chapter I found myself saying WTH? This one just wasn’t for me.

Y’all, this white man said he wanted to learn more about black culture for his future kids so can you guess what he proceeded to do to help with that?

That’s not even close to being the worst offense of this story. It’s basically a poorly written account of a sexual assault victim with stockholm syndrome and their rapist.

Here's a random quote I will never forget:

I need somebody to get Olivia Benson on the line bc this was especially heinous.

If the author wasn’t a black woman I would have given this 1 star. The overall plot had potential but I am not a fan of the “I did this. Then I did that. Then I went there” writing style and that’s what this is. It also annoyed me that every time someone touched their phone we had to know it was an iPhone like why does that matter? There were a couple paragraphs that had the word iPhone in every single sentence and when most of the sentences are short that gets annoying.

The way the characters spoke also didn’t mesh with who they are. The FMC Kenya is from Alabama and yet her actual dialogue in a lot of the book is incredibly proper. The author is also from Alabama so I’m not sure why she wrote the dialogue that way especially since there were times when she actually wrote her to sound like a southerner. The MMC has an accent so I’m assuming his first language was Romanian and not English which is supported by the fact that Kenya mentions the way he pronounces some of his words and yet sometimes he sounded more southern than she did.

It was also annoying when the Romanian characters would say words in their native tongue because it never seemed to flow well with the sentence and then 90% of the time the English translation was just plopped into some parentheses next to it. I would’ve preferred for the meaning to be woven into the story itself but maybe that’s just me. It felt like I was reading a Romanian to English dictionary at times.

OK, so I'm going to call it... this the last book I'm reading from this author. Honey the male characters are crazy as fuck!! And it's not the sexy crazy. It's the crazy that'll have your ass scared and running for your life. How did Kenya go from "this dude is insane" to "bestie, I'm in love"? WTF?? I must've not been paying attention. One minute dude is mutilating her friend/coworker while she watches butt naked on the bed😳😳 and the next her and the MMC going about their days as a happy couple, after he told her she has no choice but to be with him. I'm sorry but I can't look pass all the unrealistic things taking place. I forgot to mention that the MMC is a child killer. He had a little girl's head in a box at the beginning of the book. I almost stopped reading right then but pushed on. Him licking the knife he used to stab/ mutilate Kenya's friend was it for me. That's not sexy. #1 that's nasty #2 that's unsanitary #3 that's a fuck no for me! ✌🏾

A positive is that this novel got me out of my reading slump.

However, so much ignorance is embedded in this novel that I can't understand why people raved about it on Booktok.

This is not going to be a positive review just a far warning!

My first issue is the marketing, from my understanding Black Romances are romances that involve both the MMC and FMC identifying as Black or African American. The FMC is Black, however, her love interest is Romanian. Therefore, that would make this book an Interracial Romance. I love interracial romance. However, this romance was a major letdown.

I feel like this author's education on multiculturalism. My first ick, was the author writing this Romanian man, to say this, "I never slept with a black woman before and maybe that's what made her so intriguing?" Why would this author write a love interest that fetishizes her based on her race? It leads me to believe that this author doesn't know anything about interracial romances or relationships. Why would this be something okay to write about? It gives an ick and a bias.

Why would a Black woman be with a man who believes that understanding her culture is by taking her to watch Bad Boy 4? Why would this author, I am assuming is a Black Woman, write a White man love interest to take his Black girlfriend, to see Bad Boy 4, so he can learn the culture? So you are saying that black people are nothing but stereotypes and full of crime and violence? Let me remind you his response was, " Yes, and because I like action movies. When we have kids, then they will be biracial. I want them to know both Black and Romanian culture. The only way I can ensure is that by learning more about Black culture myself." If you take this line out of the content that it is in, it would have been perfectly fine. The issue is that the Author wrote this character to assume the only way he can learn about Black Culture is by watching Bad Boy 4. That is my issue. Because if you think about it it says a lot of ignorance.

Also, this book takes place in Atlanta. We all know that is a major source of Black culture, energy, and vibes, it is a whole different experience to say the last. I am very confused about why this culture would be so narrow and limited to not being exposed to some ounce of Black culture. For all this talk about this Romanian man, there was nothing really that connected to his Romanian culture, except the word mafia, but I just don't feel like this author cared enough to do any research.

The smut scenes were subpar. For all this talk about having a plan and basic sex, the scene was very bland to me. There was no element of kink involved to make it anything other than vanilla which shows how little this other knows about the Kink world. It's like this author is using words that there not a full understanding of.

Yes, I know this sounds harsh but honestly, it needed to be said.
If you are going to write a story about a different culture then do your research. I don't care if it's a short or a long-ass novel but do some research.

This book really could have had potential with a pretty good plot. However, the writing and character development were just utterly disappointing.

4.5✨ I was entertained by this one. I thought on the dark romance totem pole it wasn’t too dark and would be a good intro for someone looking to get into the genre. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the way Kenya matched Alexandur’s energy and how protective she was of her brother. Alexandur was clearly smitten with Kenya and epitomized the “touch her and die” energy. Looking forward to more from this family. The one gripe I had with this book is it’s labeled as an African American Romance and the MMC is clearly a different race - not that this takes away from the fact that this is a good story, I just think it is a little misleading. 🥴

Jatoria absolutely killed it with this release (pun intended) because this is my type of toxic!
Alexandur is a walking red flag that Kenya clocked as soon as she set eyes on him. Like a moth to a flame she could not stop herself from being attracted to his fire. Little did he know that she would be the phoenix who could rise from the ashes and shine brighter. She was the light to his darkness.

If anyone were to ever ask me what my dark desires are it'd be having a monster at my disposal and having him smell like Baccarat!

Can't wait for Constantine's book.

Jatoria C……yasss

4.5 Jatoria C put her food in this book. I enjoyed this story and I rarely read dark romance however, this book is my favorite read of the month. The MMC was really unhinged and crazy especially what he did to the body guards. I can’t wait until his brother book comes out. This book is my favorite book by Jatoria hands down.

un💀aliving of a 👧 which put me right off,I get its meant to be dark but come on was that even remotely necessary?have zero clue if there was any kind of retribution or punishment but seeing as this is who we are meant to be rooting for I'm guessing its a no. To be fair there was no on page unaliving of said 👧 just a box like that one movie with Brad Pitt iykyk📦

⭐️⭐️

Unpopular opinion: I don’t get all the hype.

This was weird, when did they fall in love? He was a jerk to her and even he found out her “secret”, he still didn’t change. He psychologically abused her and somehow she fell in love. Yeah, this was weird.

Prior to the discovery of who betrayed them, I was interested in Ari and the brother. But that’s only when I thought it would be less of a psycho romance like this one. A love triangle angle would’ve been more interesting, since he wasn’t into this best friend.

Oh and Constatin’s name was spelled two different ways; which was really annoying.

I doubt I’ll read further.

This one didn’t do it for me. A few things for me, when I enter the world of fiction I expect unrealistic things to take place which means I don’t want to hear about someone purchasing things from TikTok shop, seeing Bad Boys 4 at the movies or even buying Kaleidoscope hair products. I read to escape my real life lol.

Yeah, this one was definitely overhyped on TikTok fasho fasho 😒

the writing is a bit weird

I wasn’t able to finish reading and give an accurate review on the story because I can’t get past the writing. It reads as if a machine wrote it. Unfortunately the dialogue is very stilted such as a lot of writing out the words in contractions and it greatly interrupts the flow of the story.

This right here

This was definitely different and I wanted to hate Alexandur so much but once I read and understood him I started to like him & as time went on he was definitely bae. Alexandur is known as the monster and for many reasons, he don’t take no slack from anyone no matter who you may be. Finding a rat in their camp definitely threw all of the Bucur men for a loop esp Nasu. These men were always taught to never show emotion and it has worked up until Alexandur meets Kenya. Kenya and her brother Kofi were all each other had bc their parents were taken away from them by persons unknown. Needing a new tech wiz was the way they happened to come up on Kenya & Kofi, Kofi being a young genius takes the offer but of course he has stipulations and the Bucur men oblige. Kenya fresh out of a relationship isn’t looking for another one at all. What happens when she falls for the one person that’s the most feared? I love how Roman picks up on little subtle things he thinks no one knows he does. Constantin was set to marry his best friend and produce and heir. How does it all go you ask? Pick up this read by Jatoria C to find out what happens all up and through this bomb dark read. You definitely didn’t disappoint at all. Need a different read I highly recommend this right here

I stayed up until literally 4am reading this book. I have been dipping my toe in and out of Dark Romance because most of them never FULLY land for me. It’s not even the dark content/morally grey men that wouldn’t land. It was the lead up… it didn’t match the intensity for me.

This one hit the intended mark in the genre for me for the first time.

I’m not a huge fan of interracial romance tropes but if they’re written like this. Give them to me! (Edit: reading of the critiques of this book on this exact topic — while I feel like some of them are valid — like it being labeled an “African American Romance” — some others, I felt like Alexandur’s ignorance was intentionally written that way… maybe it’s just me. I think if the FMC corrected him during those moments, it would have landed better for readers. I took her NOT correcting him as a sign she already thought he was scary and unhinged and she ain’t wanna rock the boat bc she felt like he meant well)

I’ll definitely be seeing what’s up with Roman and Constantin at some point this month.

This book/series AINT for everybody… so saying I would recommend it is a stretch. But will EYE be reading… yep!

What kind of best friend

With a best friend like that and a body guard you knew for years, you don't need to be head of the Mafia. And the middle brother needs to be put in a StrStraitjacket and locked away. Kenya needs to be put with him, why would you marry a man that's a nutt?

Alexandur and Kenya

Alexandur is WILD, like from the very beginning. I liked Kenya a lot too, I will say I could have used just a smidge more actual romance between these two…..but I’m hopeful we’ll get glimpses of that in the next two books!!

Honestly I went into this story blind. The only knew it was a dark romance.
If you are not a dark romance girly please don’t pick this book. The author does over the trigger warnings
This was such a fun and twisted read. I have to read the other brother’s stories.

If you unhinged, obsessed, possessive mmc this is it. Now you have to suspend your belief. 😂

4.2 stars!! 🖤 Okayy so I gotta admit that I’m conflicted. This is the first book I read by Jatoria and honestly didn’t disappoint! They were times when I literally paused in a “WTF” moment because of how unhinged these characters are ESPECIALLY Alexandur. That man needs some series help and he honestly scares me, but imma stick beside him. I don’t blame Kenya for just accepting her fate of becoming his wife because he was NEVER going to stop chasing her. UM plus he’s a rich (billionaire), FINE ASF, lays down good pipe 😏🌶️🌶️, spoils her, obsesses and possesses over her, and he treats her like a BLACK QUEEN 👸🏾. HELLOO she’d be a fool not to be with this man.

Jatoria girllllll I’m already on to the next book in this series!

twisted love

I waffle back and forth on dark romances because I am so often not sure of my feelings when dealing with the subject matter depicted in them, but Alexandur and Kenya's dynamic started with something I absolutely love—a kidnapping. Kenya's little brother Kofi unwittingly attracts the attention of the mafia, and Kenya wakes up one night to an ultimatum: either come with us or die. What follows is Alexandur taking notice of Kenya and deciding she would be his wife. Alexandur was a character because he was super steadfast with what he wanted and didn't mind doing WHATEVER to obtain it. I loved that Kenya had no hesitation about excepting Alexandur and his proclivities, and he was for sure crazy, but he loved her hard. I was honestly hooked, and I can't wait for Constatin's book because I want to know if he gets that marriage and baby he so desperately needs.

From start to finish Alexandur was definitely an experience. Alexandur and Kenya end up meeting when Kofi's (Kenya's little brother) tech skills puts him on the radar of the Bucur family when they embark on a mission to find out who has double crossed their family. From the moment Alexander laid eyes on Kenya he knew that she would be his...whether she liked it or not.

This is definitely not a sweet romance. It's the author's first dark romance and I was thoroughly entertained throughout this whole book. The Bucur brothers are surely in a league of their own and I don't foresee any of these three men doing anything the easy way. This series is set up to get more unhinged as it goes on.
