Nick Holleran #4

A Shadow Over Haven

Rate this book
Ever heard the saying, “Careful what you wish for?” The phrase is about to take on a whole new meaning for Haven’s one-and-only Paranormal Investigator, Nick Holleran…

In the months since ‘One Life Left’ and his reality-spinning showdown with Lilith and the Sin-Eater, Nick Holleran has spent the time making new friends and forging alliances across the realms of Hell. But when an innocuous relic-hunt on behalf of the elusive Collector proves to be more than it seems, Nick’s new normal becomes twisted beyond reason.

His foundations crumbling, and his relationships with both his girlfriend Rosa, and eternal ghost-teen Diana, tested beyond what’s reasonable, Nick has no choice but to go on the attack, or Hell will change forever… And not for the better. Revelations are uncovered, mysteries unlocked, and, even when the stakes are unimaginable, there’s snark. Good old-fashioned snark.

Look, it’s Nick Holleran. You ever heard that other saying? “The more things change…

If you enjoy "Supernatural" and the "Dresden Files", you’ll be captivated by this paranormal detective series.

A Shadow over Haven by David Green is another fantastic instalment in a series set in hell - on earth.

Nick Holleran is a Main character who I immediately clicked with, especially for his sass and sarcasm! He's prone to just run into every situation head first, and hopefully a plan will come along at some point. I enjoy his voice so very much, and while I want to shake him every so often, I can always understand why he does things.

In this part of the story, he gets his hands on a very powerful relic, which he had to keep safe, all while not falling into its thrall…

I care a lot for Nick and all those dear to him, so it felt like coming home.
Spending time with favourite characters again, be it his kinda adopted ghost daughter, his girlfriend who might not be magical, but well able to kick ass or the bar owner who won't be messed about. Then there's also the ones who I find deeply intriguing, but am still quite wary about - Lucifer himself as well as Death, to name but a few.

They all gained even more depth, and boy do I need the next book right now, as it ends on quite the helldangler, just my luck, as this one isn't even out yet, I was just lucky enough to get an advanced copy. Luckily he's a quick writer, so the next one will hopefully be out in spring.

If you like fast paced urban fantasy, without a focus on romance, instead all about friendships and (found) family as well as plenty of action, banter and intrigue, you have to read these!

All truly great fantasy Detective Noir has components necessary for a successful tale:

✅ A foul-mouthed, brazen, over-confident detective
✅ An aging muscle car
✅ A soundtrack
✅ Things that go bump in the night
✅ Body parts and body count
✅ A love interest with a heart of gold
✅ Piercing insights into the human condition

Nick Halloran does not disappoint. He is/has all of those things, plus a daughter who, despite being dead, fills his heart with a glow that warms his cockles.

There too, are the cops, mobsters, demons, angels and River Styx ferryman, Charon, who are complicating his life. Of course, this little show wouldn’t be complete without a cameo from Lucifer.

I’m not going to tell you about the plot, but I will share some snippets that give you a peek into Nick’s life (and the mind of author David Green).

❇️
Look, I’m a great fucking guy. Honestly. And I don’t try to be an ass. It’s just that most people see me that way, and getting to know me better doesn’t seem to act as a panacea to my notoriety.

❇️
“Yeah, thanks,” I reply, eyeing the table. Pancakes, bacon, OJ, and more cover the entire surface. I stop myself from asking what the special occasion is. Evidently, this is the usual breakfast at Casa de Holleran in this altered reality. And it’s generally best practice not to question bacon.

❇️
Other Me produces the trademark grin and, honestly, watching myself do it, I can see why it rarely works. Who does Other Me think he is, Han Solo?

Well … Yeah.

❇️
“It isn’t much of a plan, Nick.”

“We seem to find ourselves in the middle of things without one a lot, don’t we?”

She pats my arm, and I gasp against the searing ice. “It’s the Nick Holleran way.”

❇️
Sometimes, all you can do is think, and let destiny walk you down the path fate wants.

Think. And remember those you’ve lost.

❇️
Nick Holleran’s heading to the abyss. And I ain’t coming back without my kid. One way or the other. No matter what fate says. Because you know what? I’m the Fateless. And I make my own fucking destiny.

Hell’s about to find out exactly what that means.

Nick is in big trouble but since he's grown and even matured, he is handling his business in this book #3.
What a wild ride! Definitely some darker themes and our main character gets TESTED! But he has his rag tag group around him and they support him in all the right ways. Some amazing battle scenes again in this story and so well done. That's something I absolutely love about the writing! Charon is my hero-ish lol
I was not happy with the surprise at the end, even though I figured it had to happen. How can I wait till next year for the next book?

A Shadow Over Haven is a dark, gritty urban fantasy packed with supernatural intrigue, emotional weight, and a fast-paced plot that never lets up. Paranormal PI Nick Holleran is hired to retrieve a dangerous relic—but what should’ve been a simple job spirals into a full-blown descent into madness, power, and horror.

What I loved:

🧠 Nick’s character arc: This book hits hard emotionally as Nick wrestles with power addiction, past trauma, and the cost of saving others. His downward spiral was painful, raw, and brilliantly written.

👻 Diana: Her evolution from sarcastic ghost teen to near-divine force was one of my favorite parts. She adds so much heart to the story—and I get all mushy seeing how Nick cares for her.

🔫 Rosa’s role: A true badass with no magical abilities, just grit, intelligence, and love. Her relationship with Nick added stakes and emotional depth, plus I love how she is still not giving up on him.

⚔️ The action scenes: Every confrontation was brutal, cinematic, and imaginative. I had the feeling it was all happening in my living room.

👁️‍🗨️ The Scepter of Metatron: A terrifying artifact that slowly corrupts Nick and raises the tension chapter by chapter.

🧟‍♂️ Elder gods and hellish schemes: I loved the blend of urban fantasy, horror, and mythology. The cosmic terror added a whole new scale to the world.

😱 That ending: I'm an emotional wreck and I need the next book yesterday!

This was by far the darkest entry in the series—and my favorite. But a cliffhanger? Why are you doing this to us?????🤯 and when will the next book be available?

WOW! Another truly amazing book in the Nick Holleran series! A storm has been brewing and it is coming to a head! After a job "retrieving" an artifact, Nick's world is turned upside down. After a wish comes true, he must figure out how to not only undo what has been done, but how to keep the artifact safe from everyone - himself included. He will face off against Alpha Demons, a mob boss, Nephilim and an Ancient to keep this relic from the wrong hands.
This book was so crazy, I couldn’t even believe everything that happened! And nothing is off the table in Hell, except werewolves. I was so busy following along with Nick and Diana that I was pretty much smacked in the face with the big surprise! And then the final battle… holy cow! This book was a completely different version of Lucifer than I was expecting.
And we finally got the story of Nick’s childhood. What a horrible thing to realize about your parents. Even if they weren’t that great to begin with, this was a whole other level of crazy!
I love how Nick is finally “growing up” and learning that Diana isn’t some little kid. She’s actually a super strong spirit who can do some major damage! And Rosa is just as bada$$ and wields the rings of Excalibur like a pro!
The ending to this book was absolutely insane and even though I’ve kind of known what might happen, I still got a little teary eyed at the end. Gave me the feels for sure! But I’m excited to know that there is more to the story!

Amazing!
Based on my usual cozy favorites I shouldn’t love this funny, gore splattered hard-boiled detective story, but I absolutely do! Nick is hilarious and I love the writing in these decidedly dark books.

In this fourth book, the stakes are ramped up with the fate of the world in play. Nick is up to his usual exploits while dealing with the fallout of not having been honest with his perpetually adolescent adopted ghost daughter, Diana. When he’s hired to find an artifact and rescue some people and he and Diana walk into a bloodbath. Suraz, the Nephilim shows up and things get really interesting because all the monsters of story are real and living in Hell - which is our world on earth.

I enjoyed this episode of Nick's story as much as the earlier ones. I loved seeing some old friends again and the dialogue, world, and characters are terrific. The mystery is excellent and I didn’t see the twists coming at all! My favorite character is Diana and I absolutely love her relationship with Nick.

Shadows Over Haven is a darkly hilarious page turning adventure set in a fantastically rich world. Keep these fantastic stories coming!

Nick Holleran is back with a bang! This is one of my favorite urban fantasy series and it just keeps getting better and better with each installment, this is my favorite Holleran-book so far.

Nick Holleran is a PI – but not just a simple private investigator, but the (only) paranormal investigator. Since we follow him, we know that ‘hell on earth’ is not just a phrase. But since then, he has learned a lot about the world he’s living in. But he keeps on getting friendly reminders that his knowledge is still lacking. A lot. For example, when a powerful artefact falls into his hands…and things go truly sideways from there.

David Green not only manages to write a compelling story that had me WTF-ing out loud quite a few times, but he writes characters I care about. And we get to know them a little better with each new book. And I truly love Nick Holleran’s voice (though I have to admit that I sometimes wonder how he would ‘sound’ as a Brit…), it’s also one ingredient that makes this series so much fun to follow. I also love the musical tips to the hat in this series, in this case it’s obvious that it’s not just a certain character who really likes Nick Cave. And the constant reminders of Nick’s age – so funny (but sadly accurate, I should know). There are still way too few middle-aged main characters in fantasy.

Once again, a great and entertaining story! But what a cliffhanger, too.

Haven's one and only Paranormal P.I the king of snark himself, Nick Holloran is back!

One of the best things I ever did was pick up the first book of this series so my love affair with Mr Holloran began. Nick is hands down my favourite character that I recently discovered and slipping back into his world for this latest installment was like satin on my soul.

And oh brother what an epic installment it was, it enthralled me from the first chapter and I hung on every word until the last. Hilariously funny in places, one minute I'm laughing out loud, the next I'm on the edge of my seat with anticipation of what coming next.

Seeing how much Nick has grown in this book is one of my favourite elements to this story, whilst keeping his humor, snark and trademark lop-sided smile (which works on absolutely nobody) intact. Which is what I fell in love with in the first place.

And I simply adore Rosa, while undoubtedly she has been a calming positive influence on Nick, has herself grown into a strong independent character in her own right and if I'm honest can be a bit of a bad ass.

But the real gem in the story for me is the relationship between Nick and Diana. They have a genuine affection for each other as father and daughter which comes across on the page really well, and I believe she is the main reason Nick has changed for the better. Trust me it gave me all the feels.

Throw in some demons, arch angels and a greedy mob boss and you have one HELL of a rollercoaster ride.

I FREAKING LOVED THIS, every word, every syllable, chapter and verse and is definitely my favourite book of the series so far and I look forward to more Nick shenanigans in the future

If you haven't yet delved into this series I strongly recommend that you do, so you can discover the magic of Nick Holloran for yourselves...

David Green has done it again with Nick Holleran, Haven’s one and only paranormal detective. Hell always comes calling for Nick Holleran, and boy does he go through the ringer in this one.
The voice of our MC Nick is so strong, it’s no wonder I sped through this ARC. He is snarky, he is troubled, he is witty and sarcastic, and he’s got a big ol’ soft spot for his ghost kid.
He goes through a huge emotional mess in this installment, and the character arc was top notch.
And then there’s the baddies.
David Green writes some badass, dark, and thoroughly nuanced characters. And the denizens of Hell are full of them. Of course there’s Lucifer, but Charon too, both ancient characters with huge development this time around.
Loved this book and look forward to many more!

If you are already a Nick Holleran fan, you already know you're going to get. We have our mobsters, demons, ghosts, witty banter and badassed hilarity of quips and shady decisions in the heat of the moment. Relics, memory loss, and a whirlwind of deception and ulterior motives run rampant in this addition. We have our challenges of home life and relationships....

HOWEVER This is what I want to speak to here specifically. Without spoiling any of the books before this, and including this great book.

This book, hits differently. At least it did for me. Struggling to let people in, and doing ones damnedest to protect ones you love when your background has not laid the best example for you has to be one of the hardest things a person can get through. The trauma and fear that can be associated with that can be life altering and one may become a very hard person to love in the end.

This addition of the series is going to wrap its ghostly little fingers around that heart and tug a little bit more than the rest of the books have up to date.

The rawness and desperation, and utter defeat in moments will hit someone like me in ways that make you question your own ability to love, and be loved for a brief time.

David, this one struck a chord. I'm not sure you meant to pluck it so hard, but the note hit.

I'm going to take this Heart-Shaped Box and nurse these feelings for a little bit.

Thank you.

Nick is back and he is on fire. Not literally, well mostly not.

This instalment in the series is absolutely brilliant.

Nick does some serious character development while the story is twisty and intriguing.

The descriptions are fantastic, epic, and brilliant.

And it wouldn’t be nick Holleran if there wasn’t a whole bunch of sarcasm and self-deprivation mixed in with cocky arrogance.

Loved this book. Can’t wait to read the next one.

Another great Nick Holleran novel! Fast paced, great internal dialogue, deepening relationships, fun self-deprecation and higher stakes! I loved this book, as I did the others. I didn’t realize it was recently released and for some reason thought it was the last one. I was happily mistaken, more to come. The only problem, now I have to wait. David Green, I hope you are busy writing. 😉😉😉

Wow!! This book had so many ups and downs and twists and turns! I still love the characters, who I have grown to love even more as the series progresses. This book was so full of action and emotion! Especially towards the end.. so many hard to read things, and so much heartbreak, but the actual ending was amazing and gave me so much hope for the next book!

For some reason, I thought I had read the previous book in this series, and while I haven’t reading this was just so familiar. Anyway, even though I hadn't read the previous books, it didn’t take long for me to get caught up and really enjoy Nick Holleran’s latest adventure. I loved Nick, Diana, and Rosa, and I loved their dynamic. This book has a little bit of time travel (not exactly, but I don’t want to spoil it) which isn’t my favorite, and I was thrown off a little. No matter, I was quite enthralled with this well-written adventure, and I hope to read more about Nick and his family soon. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

I’ve come to the end of my Nick Holleran journey – for now. Given the massive cliffhanger at the end, and the fact Green is currently working on the next in the series, I’m looking forward to getting my Holleran fix hopefully in the near future.

A Shadow Over Haven is the most recent book of the Nick Holleran series and the stakes have never been higher. For those looking to get into these excellent books, Nick Holleran has escaped death, and as a result, he can now see all the ghoulish things that live invisibly among us. Ghosts, demons, and other monsters, he discovers Hell is on Earth, and we’re living it. Nick takes his PI business from Private to Paranormal Investigation – or should we call it Preternatural Investigation now that we know what that means?

Nick is sent to retrieve a relic for the Irish Don known as the Collector, a relic which warps reality in ways Nick could only wish for, and the phrase “be careful what you wish for” couldn’t be more apt.

It’s difficult to describe the great ways Green plays around with the concept of reality without giving too much away but believe me when I say it’s well thought out and a joy to read. Green leans into his strengths, specifically his fantastic characters, which push the stakes even higher given how much you care about Nick and his found family.

Speaking of characters, all the ones we know and love are back, specifically, Diana, the eyeless teenage ghost from the 1960s and Rosa, Nick’s girlfriend, who is a librarian and martial artist in Aikido.

Nick has learned in the last book to let the women in his life help him and not sideline them because he’s afraid they might get hurt. But what if they do get hurt and make decisions he can’t control? As much as Nick wants the help of his family, it’s not easy when things go wrong.

We have the return of Lucifer. A few books back, we suspected he was up to something, and that plan has escalated. Like all of Green’s characters, Lucifer is interesting to read. I really liked his scenes as, like Charon, he reveals more about the afterlife which in turn reveals Green’s engaging world-building.

There’s a lot more action in this book which can be tricky to write and make interesting, but Green manages this in a way that’s both gripping and entertaining.

This series is the type you recommend to your friends because you’re dying to talk to someone about it. I don’t know if there’s a name for the type of fans of these books – Holleranites? But I believe I’m one of them now. This is now one of my favourite series and I can see myself rereading them in the future.

A Hell of a Read

Damn this is my favourite of the Nick Holleran series, yet all are brilliant, but this one tops the lot. Slick Nick and his sidekick ghost kid Diana are back with a double bang and causing all sorts of trouble in hell for the supernatural beings, in this fantastic supernatural paranormal blockbuster of series.

A Shadow Over Haven is the fourth book in the Nick Holleran series by David Green and this story just gets better and better with each book as the author brings us on another roller coaster ride into the city of Haven and a dip into hell.

Told from a first person perspective, Nick Holleran is one of those characters that you can't help but love but would love to give him a kick in the hole because he can be such an ass at times. Well, I suppose if you died and came back and had a manner of all demons, death and Gangsters after you, you probably would be too...😂

I love David Greens writing. It's creative and witty, his worldbuilding, and plot making draws you in hook line and sinker. I absolutely the dark setting he has created for us fans of the Supernatural to get lost in. From the get-go, David Green really knows how to grip his readers with suspense as you are thrown straight into an action-packed showdown from the very first chapter of every book, and it's bloody fantastic.

If you love a good supernatural detective story, then look no further than this wonderful series. Full of hilarious moments, lots of twists and turns, and the characters are so fun and so relatable. Whether they be ghosts, demons, Lucifer, Irish Gangsters or hard ass cops, you will absolutely love them all even if their trying to destroy the world.

After the end of One Life Left and surviving Liliths fae realm. Nick Holleran and his ghost kid Diana find themselves in another sticky situation in the abandoned Forest View Hotel’s lobby as a blood ritual and an old nemesis has gone a step too far using the Septer of Metatron, creating a Chtulhu God and it's trying to drag it's way into Haven, but not on Nicks watch.

With Metatrons Septer in hand, Nick finds himself addicted to its pull. It can change reality, and when the higher dieties feel it has come into play, everyone wants in on the action. Nick is playing a dangerous game and must keep it safe and from falling into the wrong hands, but for how long before all things go to hell, literally.

Absolutely awesome read, I just can't get enough of this series. I can't wait for the next instalment Infernos Child. If you haven't checked out David Greens books yet, then I very highly recommend that you do...😁💙💀⚡️👹

Lucifer really is a pain in the ass. I loved what was going on with the Nephlim as well as the detectives. Poor Lori has to believe Nick now and sucks that she has to deal with the loss of Henry as a partner and that he was a traitor. David sure put Nick through some shit. I really enjoyed his and Diana's relationship over this one. Even in the end when she called him dad I started crying! Loved the call back to the vision he got from Sin-eater I knew it would play wasn't sure how but also knew Rosa and Nick weren't gonna end ❤ I can't wait for the next one.

A Shadow Over Haven by David Green

*****

I love all the mystery and spooky vibes that this book has brought me without somehow being over the top. I’m not a fan of explicit amounts of detail, blood and gore in my fantasy/horror novels. Green’s way of telling a story is really intriguing for a few reasons, including sentence structure. I’ve mentioned his writing style for this series in other reviews but I think I’ll reiterate it here once more, the writing style is very suitable for the narrative. It’s quick, sometimes broken and there are many moments where the character has silly thoughts. This all lends to a very believable character.

Nick Holleran is far from having it all figured out and he often acts on a whim. However, that is what makes Holleran special, his fate is hard for even Charon to determine. You know the one. I find this concept of a character very interesting because we get to see even though Holleran doesn’t have it all figured out, he’s making it work. We are introduced to a character that has all the odds stacked against him but even when things are not looking so good, he keeps going. Holleran is determined to make things right and that is an admirable character to have.

I was so torn at the loss of a character in this book but the last chapter makes a promise that it is not the end of the tale. I can’t wait for Green to deliver me a happy ending but looks like we are all going to the lowest level of Hell to get it. So let’s all get the Hell outta’ here and see what’s next in this series when Inferno’s Child releases in 2025. I’ll be waiting (just like good ‘ol Charon).

With storytelling so sublime, so natural, the ease of David's writing is probably some of the best I've read. It's almost as though I'm sitting by a favourite grandfather's feet while he's keeping my enthralled, regaling his life events in a matter of fact way, as if it were an ordinary tale of an ordinary person. Believe me, there's NOTHING ordinary about this book, indeed, this entire series! It is a stroke of pure imaginative genius, it's brilliance leaping off the pages. The prose is unsurpassed excellence, the writing so skilful crafted, the plot... well heck! I guarantee you've NEVER been exposed to the likes of this! A more immersive, more compelling, more unique, more intriguing tale, you'll never come across. David is masterclass, a creative genius, he's a giant among authors!

Oh where oh where do I start? With my all consuming love of Nick, my favourite PI? Or do I start with the warmth Nick finally achieved with his found family? Or the fact that this book, amazingly, is my favourite in the series? Or the superb suspenseful drama that tore me apart? How can one not adore Nick? He's a character that resonates loudly with me. The down and out, barely functional Nick is a thing of the past, now he's fights the evil threatening the world. In this book, he and his allies face a thing of such darkness I was shaking in my boots! Which leads to Nick...umm... acquiring a powerful scroll and boy does the shizer hit the fan! A relic the Collector is after but Nick is rather taken with it, it's sparkly and beautiful and Nick kinda wants to keep it. Strange things occur, so bizarre that Nick's jaw came unhinged, mine? Mine dropped to my feet! Here's the thing with David's prowess in penmanship, expecting the twists he lays before us, it's always so unexpected, I'm always agog when they do appear.

Nick was in a happy place, Nick has real friends, Nick has an awesome relationship with the equally awesome Rosa, Nick has the most beautiful love for his adopted daughter, Diana, Nick's "family" mean the world to him and then everything threatens to go belly up. The majesty of this book is that as it's told from Nick's perspective, I sunk into his brain, I became part of him, I experienced what he experienced alongside what I was experiencing. From the onset the action was fierce, and the battles keep on coming, not only the physical fighting the baddies but the internal battle Nick finds himself facing. With everyone and their neighbour after the sceptre, Nick does all he can to keep this dangerous relic from their hands, a mighty sacrifice, the darn thing is causing havoc in his life! It's tempered with the most awesome, clever, humorous banter, like this sentence where Nick has a confrontation with Charon, the Grim Reaper "you malnourished, Clint Eastwood looking motherf****" You'd have to read the entire scene to appreciate it to it's fullest. In fact, you'd have to read this entire book and series to discover first hand the splendiferous craft David hold in his fingers, in his imagination, to appreciate all the splendour, all the heartache, all the action, and most importantly, all the joy and warmth it evokes. Amid the dark there is light, there is redemption, a key theme that runs through an otherwise deliciously dark tale, hope. I got my Nick fix in spades with this book, hopefully the withdrawal symptoms won't start to manifest until the next book is ready for me to devour!

This book! THIS BOOK! This absolutely AMAZING! INGENIOUS! UNPUTDOWNABLE BOOK! With all of it’s snarky humor! Shadowed, Dark, and Demented twists and turns! Completely crazy and hellacious beings and creatures! Wonderful and perfectly written found family! And my very favorite snarky, fight until you die or come out on the other side, loyal, SmartAss, Fateless PI ever written! THIS BOOK HAS IT ALL!

Nick has his job (literally) cut out for him…as he enters the old abandoned Forest View Hotel he only has two goals: (1) Find the relic and (2) kill as few cultists as possible. However he doesn’t anticipate running into so many entities from his past.…but after securing said relic he soon discovers it has more in store for him than simply being handed over to The Collector. And with a hearts desire, a Nephilum on the fritz, a mysteriously absent Charon, secrets and revelations, and the relic the likes of which Nick has never experienced before, Nick and his family find themselves headed down a road where the Fateless and Fate just may collide.

I LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! THIS SERIES! It is easily one of my very very very favorites (I may have read them each a time or two…who’se counting?!)! And A Shadow Over Haven was the most perfect continuation! It had it all! I laughed (of course…because Nick is snarky…and it’s completely hilarious!), I felt some angst (I mean murderous cultists, Lucifer himself, and some death and gore oh my!), and there were even a couple times I cried (the heart strings were definitely yanked in this one!). But when creating the world through Nick’s eyes and while trudging head long through Hell, Green somehow always is able to intertwine a lovely ray of light, hope, and love, throughout all the muck, mud, bodies and blood, and utter devastation! And it’s bloody brilliant!

My absolute very very favorite thing about this book was the bond and relationship that continues to grow between Nick and his adopted, ghost daughter, Diana! It is so sweet and lovely, and completely wonderful. The love Nick has for her shines from the pages, and although he has made mistakes you can see that he is doing his best to make better decisions and let Diana make decisions about her own life. Adoption and adoptive relationships aren’t represented enough in fantasy and Green did a fantastic job creating and growing this relationship.

As always, I always appreciate all the unique, interesting, and sometimes completely devastating and hellacious creatures and beings in this series! It is one of my very favorite aspects! And once again, Green did not disappoint!!! There are various entities a plenty and they are all important to creating the dark, dangerous and sometimes lighter mood of the story! SO WELL DONE!

So yep…I don’t know what the HELL I am going to do with myself until the next book is written!!!

If you love some darkness, some death and destruction, but with the quintessential ray of sunshine woven throughout! All the creatures and beings (except werewolves!)! Mysterious relics, discovered secrets, and revelation upon unexpected revelation! And the perfect found family a snarky PI could ask for! You just NEED to read Nick Holleran Private Investigator! You won’t be disappointed!!!

Nick Holleran has quickly become one of my favourite fictional characters, which is odd because I'm generally not into P.I. stories. The supernatural aspects of this one make this series different.

In this third book (not counting the prequel) of the series, we are artfully reminded of who's who in the cast of characters as Nick breaks the fourth wall and talks to the reader. It's very well done.

I was more aware of the present tense writing at first this time. I'm not sure why as the previous books in the series were also in present tense. Green does it well so it gets past me unnoticed most of the time, assisted by Nick breaking the fourth wall to speak directly to the reader. It didn't take long for me to get too caught up in the story to notice anymore.

As usual, Nick is up to his ears in strange, supernatural happenings. The stakes escalate in this one far beyond anything he's dealt with before and the excitement level just keeps going up. Even when you think you've read the last showdown, there's one more to come. I found myself seriously wondering if Nick had bitten off more than he could chew this time and all would be lost. Maybe not all, but there are sacrifices to be made.

The theologians would have a conniption fit over a lot of the world building in this story especially, though they probably wouldn't accept Earth as Hell from the earlier stories anyway. Green's use of mythological entities and perhaps one or two he invented himself is artful and reads plausible, no matter how much we know it's Fantasy.

The story is very well done and the further I read, the harder it got to quit for the night. Possibly the best new story I've read this year!

I've really enjoyed this series from beginning to end and it only looks to be getting more interesting in the future. As with the other books in the series, A Shadow Over Haven follows our street wise yet common sense dumb supernatural PI and the stakes only keep on getting higher. If he thinks he's faced hair raising dangers before, this book takes him into direct conflict with some of the top dogs of the supernatural world including Alpha Demons, Nephilims who are some of the biggest and baddest that the Hell on Earth he lives in can provide.

This builds a lot on the world-building and often felt slower than it actually was because of it. There's action, tension and battle scenes in spades, but there's also dialogue and gaining a deeper understanding of how the living and the dead have come to share the same space and the intricacies of the Seal behind it. There's still a lot that we don't understand, but there's a reason for that and it's nice to see details being eked out slowly throughout the novels to grow the world-building.

The characters were also built on excellently, in particular the supporting cast who have been around for the ride. Information about Nephilims and Ancients is understandably thin on the ground and they have no reason to stop and answer a curious PI's questions under normal circumstances. However, things are rarely normal around Nick and I really liked getting more out of Charon, Suraz and even Lucifer.

This is dark - darker than the previous novels - gritty and tense, yet it's also introspective at times and has characters who very much fly off the page. It's a wild ride and if you enjoy your urban fantasy darkly funny yet emotionally hard-hitting, this is a series for you.

TLDR review: Nick is back! And the book is so much fun.

First off, thank you Author Green for the recap of characters. Told in Nick’s voice it’s a great way to catch back up and see how Nick views them as well.

When reading a Nick book, I feel like I’m listening to one of the older detective shows. I hear the gravelly voice, I see things in black and white or sepia tones, I even want to hear a few ‘dames’ and babes’ tossed in for good measure! Nick and co go through… a lot in this book. They get dragged, backwards and probably starkers, 10 miles through a gravel road full of flint and obsidian chips. But there’s a note of hope at the end. Coincidentally this note is announcing the next book.

I really enjoy the way Author Green sets the stage for events. The character interactions come off feeling solid and real, and they make sense within the context. There’s a nice, subtle alliterative touch as well with descriptive sections like “We drive through silent, rain-slicked roads flanked by struggling streetlights. They fight a losing battle against the post-midnight ...”

It’s an enjoyable read, and you really need to read the earlier books to see all the longer plot threads that stretch between the books.

Nick's life as the town of Haven's only paranormal- or preternatural - P.I. is like a rollercoaster of ups, downs and loops; or, perhaps, more like one of those super-creepy haunted houses where actors dressed as evil clowns jump out at you at every turn. (Don't worry, there are no clowns in the book. Pretty much everything else, yes, but no clowns).

This sarcastic, optimistic, world-weary, loving and frankly hilarious man is genuinely one of the best MCs I have come across. His style, his found family, his attitude, his one-liners - everything about him is just perfection.

The side characters and villains are all gorgeously described, the plot is fast and exciting, the settings are atmospheric and so real that you almost recognise them. And the fight scenes are bloody and creative, just how I like them.

I adore the writing style, especially the language - I mean, Nick's hardly going to be all kittens and rainbows, is he? I'm so invested in these books and so grateful that they exist. Thank you, David Green. You rock.

Nick Holleran is the bee's knees, the devil's pajamas, and the Mustang's roar!

What more can be said?

This installment takes us to some deeply personal places for our favorite curmudgeonly detective and his crew and the battles are consistently epic without overshadowing these tales of personal horror. I laughed, I cried, I threw up a little. All in one scene!

If you are a fan of Nick, you will come away satisfied and eager for the follow-up. If you are not a fan of Nick, start with book one and join the Readerverse of Madness! David Green has found the magical Mcguffin again with "A Shadow Over Haven" and has generously shared it with us!

Highly recommended, especially for those who lean toward the horror end of the spectrum. This series has some of the creepiest scenes I've ever read, though it is solidly Urban Fantasy and doesn't linger on them too long. Green strikes a tightrope balance through all the feels.

Exceptionally impressive.

Bon appetite!

A Shadow Over Haven is a fantastic, action-packed continuation to this dark, urban fantasy series featuring paranormal private investigator Nick Holleran. I enjoyed the found family elements immensely and really appreciated the reality bending magical item included in this volume. While I think this story could be read as a standalone, it definitely ties in with the previous books in the series and was very enjoyable knowing the backstory and understanding the nuances of the world and the overarching plot.

The stakes in this volume are sky high and the ending should have hit really hard, but for some reason it didn't quite work as I think it was supposed to. I had no emotional response, which was unfortunate because I definitely care about Nick and his ghostly adoptive daughter Diana. I guess the efforts to foreshadow the final outcome were overdone, which detracted from the emotional connection. 4,5 stars, because I could have absolutely LOVED it, but yeah, not quite.

Nick Holleran is back, and this time he’s reluctantly helping the Collector hunt down a relic. When the relic turns out to be more than it seems, Nick’s list of enemies seems to expand at an alarming rate. Everyone wants the relic for themselves, but with the fate of the world at stake, Nick must decide who can be trusted.

This is my favourite of all the Holleran books so far. The stakes are high, the pace is breakneck, and the snark is on top form. I sailed through it in one night, unable to put it down. My favourite scene has to be the final showdown, though I won’t go into detail here as I wouldn’t want to spoil that for anyone - it’s epic! Surprisingly, Charon has edged his way into becoming one of my favourite characters. He’s just that cool.

I cannot wait for the next book. I NEED to find out what happens next!
