Who is Who In The Zoo...

DEAD FOLK
(The Deadlands Book 2)
by Katherine Silva

No spoilers. 4 stars. Seconds, minutes, hours didn't matter anymore in Janet's daily life of vengeance...

She needed a body...

You can't bring a soul back without a body to house it in...

The man before her, dying of cancer, told her: He's coming to get you, and he'll tear you apart...

But...

Janet wouldn't let the man die in peace until he told her who was responsible for her father's death...

She extracted that information by using her magic to move his soul into the body of a wingless fly...

A few years back...

The fox appeared, and peace became hope, and Janet learned to accept the world as it was now. She never tried to get close to the fox...

Then one day...

The fox disappeared until, at last, she found it dead on the road...

But foxes are magic...

She gathered the fox in her arms and took it to the undertaker for restoration. She needed the fox to get revenge for her murdered father...

She carried the fox home and made a magic potion. She poured some on the fox, then drank the rest...

Now...

It was time to seek revenge on the four people responsible for her father's death...

My headline, Who is Who is In the Zoo, is because most of the characters in this story had two names, making it hard to stay on track with who I was reading about.

This was a good second installment in this series, but the overly flowery prose was a challenge to get through.

Unlike the first installment, this second installment didn't have the atmosphere of the first. It was very dismal and hopeless. It was more like an episode of POWER RANGERS.

Ella, now called “Janet” travels to town to uncover the mystery of the death of Amos, and revenge for what happened in the first book.

Hmmmm. The second book in the Deadland series doesn’t have the novelty or the heart of the first one. It was good in its own right, but didn’t take right off from the ending of Dead Folk like I was hoping it would. This was an almost graphic novel revenge story. It had over-the-top violence and almost super-human fights.

Still, it wasn’t bad, and I’ll probably read the third one soon.

The story we all loved continues…

“But no tears came. So, she used spit instead. In it, there was loss and contempt for that loss, for how it shaped the rest of her life.”

Janet is back and she’s not done with meting out her vengeance using her father’s tools. Now she’s found out that the corruption that lead to Amos’ death goes much, much further. With her rage and spells, she’s heading back out into the dystopian world.

“It had to be her. Even if the world had gone to hell. Even if there was no coming back from that. She needed to be the one to set it right.”

I enjoyed seeing Janet take on the obstacles in “Dead Folk”, be it people or herself- slowing her down and distracting her. Throughout the story we see her evolving into her hard Janet persona and leaving softer Ella completely behind; while she becomes more efficient at killing, she is risking leaving her humanity behind. What at first seemed like Sisyphean tasks, are now surmountable; her skills and bloodthirstiness get her through each level to the ultimate fight. The twists and shocks are amplified in this second story, but beneath it all Janet’s grief remains.

If I were to describe this book in terms of similar fictional references, it’s like a mixture of the book “The Road” by Cormac McCarthy meets “Kill Bill” the movie. Can’t wait to see what Katherine has in store for readers next!

“But knives ended things too quickly and pain was what she was after. They deserved every ounce of it for what they’d done.”
Janet is seething. Frustration and aggravation are bubbling over. There is a mean streak here that we didn’t get a glimpse of in Undead Folk. Janet wants revenge, no matter the cost.
This is post-apocalyptic folklore. There is a quiet cruelness in the air with this book, an unrelenting tension brought about by the environment. For you Dark Tower fans, this universe has felt reminiscent of Midworld. Something Roland would tell while waiting out a thinny or sitting around a campfire.
Katherine has a single minded focus on Janet with Dead Folk. It adds an interesting magnification of all she does. Other characters feel like NPC’s whether they are important to the story or not. You don’t get to know them because this is about Janet and her struggles. Even though there are certainly other characters around, it can feel like Janet is the last person on earth and really emphasizes just how alone she is.
Overall this is a great transition from the first book, Undead Folk, to the third book, Nothingland, which should be out in December.

I loved the first book in this series, Undead Folk, and I loved this one even more. With beautiful prose from Silva, this is another fantastic blend of post-apocalyptic folk horror soaked in grief, blood, and revenge. I’m so excited to read Nothingland, which is the third book!

I can’t express just how much I love this series! I was able to read Undead Folk and Dead Folk back to back, but now Katherine Silva is making me wait until December to read the third book! In book 2, we see Janet return to her quest for vengeance through a post-apocalyptic world. She has become such a powerful character, and I love her! I’m really looking forward to following more of her story in Nothingland. I’d highly recommend picking up both books in the series 🦊❤️

I enjoyed the first novella and wanted to make sure to read Dead Folk before I forgot what happened! I didn't quite love this one as much, but definitely can say I didn't see the big plot twist happening. There's still a lot of action and death in Dead Folk but it wasn't as heart wrenching to me, personally?

It could have used a slight proof read too but overall I definitely enjoyed the novella and will be excited to find out what happens in the next story, I'm cheering for Janet to take down Steele and will never say no to dark tales

The follow up book to Undead Folk. This is an ARC that was given to me in exchange for a review.

Oh, how I have missed some of these characters! This second installment definitely has a darker, grittier story that is jam packed with action, characters, and tough decisions to be made. In this book, Janet is an absolute force to be reckoned with. She is tough, driven, agile, deadly, and yet there is a vulnerability that is still accessible. She is on a mission and I cannot wait to see what’s next. A very nice second installment that, yet again, made me want MORE! Both books in this series are highly recommended for fans of grief horror with a massive dose of vengeance.

This sequel to UNDEAD FOLK brings Janet’s story of grief and necromancy forward another step. As poetic as the first book, DEAD FOLK’s focus on revenge and the consequences of seeking it bring this leg of Janet’s journey to a dramatic and heartbreaking end.

I have never been so invested in a series of novelettes/novellas before. I cant wait for Nothingland.

Post-apocalyptic folk horror has been reincarnated. Not as a fox this time but as feminine rage. This is a quick read that rattles along with plenty of action and with a clear target in mind. There are the same layers of grief as the first book that Silva manipulates expertly to add depth to the narrative and character development.
Overall, Dead Folk provides a valuable link between the first and the last in the series, which is released in December.

Where the grief hints at violence for much of the prior volume, Undead Folk, here Silva allows Janet's grief to spill over into vengeful violence throughout. The story of the Deadlands unfolds, and we begin to understand more about the horrifying impact of The Man and other mysterious figures who seem to have been at the heart of the world's collapse.
The story ends on a powerful cliffhanger, which means any reader will need to complete their journey through the Deadlands soon after reading this one.
Highly recommended.

Dead Folks is a continuation of Janet’s journey to find the people responsible for the death of her parents. The two men who raised her with love and care before one of them started to lose their memory and the world went to Hell. The people that she hunted down thrived on the death of others, making money and hiding in the city while the many starved in the desolation of the outskirts. It’s a dark, dingy, gritty and bloody story of survival and revenge that’s not over until she finds the person at the very top.

This was book 2 in the series so I had to read book 1 in order to catch up. They were both short reads, but heavy in emotion and content. They were not easy to read for they were rich in post apocalyptic death and violence, tragedy and loss all in order to portray the story and journey that Janet had to take for this book to come about. There were moments I felt so moved with emotion because of the loss, the sacrifice of the characters, the shock of the events that came to be at the end of this book and the hardship that she had to face in order to get to the true target she was meant to face. I’m a crier when it comes to those kind of scenes in movies so I did the same with this book.

But, to get started, you need to read the first book, Undead Folk to understand how it all began. I couldn’t have read a more exciting and suspenseful short novel than this series. Couldn’t put it down and couldn’t get to the next one fast enough. The books are less than 90 pages, so if you want an affordable adventure full of blood, guts, gore, a vengeful heroine with magical powers set in a post apocalyptic world, this is it.

This series has such interesting storytelling and I'm glad there will be one more part.

I, too, would murder a hotel filled with people if someone killed my fox friend.

A blood-drenched fairy tale of rage and vengeance.
This novella packs a lot in it's pages, I read it in one sitting and loved every minute of it. We get to see Janet (Née Ella) continue in a rapidly expanding revenge plot. I will say the comp of John Wick is accurate, and I say this as someone who loves that movie almost obsessively.
Initially I wasn't sure where we would go with Janet's story. Undead Folk felt complete to me, I didn't see how that story could continue without becoming tedious. But Silva cracks open an entirely new set of characters that makes the story feel fresh and new. I enjoyed the expanding of the world as well, the delving more into the folk magic that made the soul-necromancy possible and how it centered in this story moreso than the first book.
We have more villains and more twists and I am eager to see where the third one lands our righteously murderous Janet.

I drive home from work and see a fox dash from one side of the road to the other. It’s painfully thin, but still an animal I find to be beautiful.

I finish reading Dead Folk an hour later.
As I read this novella, I wondered if it could better the first.
It did, in bloody spades.

I am seriously in love with this series.
Like the fox I saw earlier, this story is filled with pain, both emotional and physical. Oh, how I shuddered during the encounter with the witch, my nails tingling with sympathy.
The violence, blood and gore that accompany revenge colour this tale with all the shades of red.
However, Dead Folk is also a beautiful story.
So beautiful.
Yes. I cried. Again.

I will be starting the last leg of Janet’s journey tomorrow.
I know it’s gonna be wonderful.

I really bloody loved this. ❤️

This is Silva’s best voice yet. DEAD FOLK delivers a lean, fast paced continuation of the beloved UNDEAD FOLK story without relying upon its predecessor for momentum—this little story packs plenty of its own punch! Silva stacks grief horror with post-apocalyptic action, and a healthy dose of magic. Fun, right?!

Silva’s post-apocalyptic world is uniquely conditioned to accentuate the characters and provide a touch of fantasy in a landscape of grief and organized despair. Tight group of characters, a contained town, and the promise of expansion awaits.

If you loved UNDEAD FOLK, you’ll love this sequel. If you haven’t read UNDEAD FOLK, do so immediately then get back to this story!

This book picks up not long after the ending of Undead Folk. There is definitely a difference in pacing for this book in comparison to Undead Folk. It's much more fast-paced, which makes sense since the 1st book was setting the stage story wise for the 2nd book. The storyline does progress further from what we learned in the previous book, but the ending was not expected. I'm usually the person who can annoyingly figure out where a story is going, but I was stumped this time. I can't wait until the next book is out as we were left with a bit of a cliffhanger. If you're looking for a dystopian novel with revenge vibes, then I would definitely give this series a read.

Janet had thought she made peace with her grief but she was wrong, she needed to track down the person at the center of everything to exercise revenge.

This is the second book in a series (can be read stand alone) taking place in a post-apocalyptic land where grief and trauma mixes with magic and spells. A feminine rage/revenge story to seek out the people and things that have wronged Janet in the past 7 years. Janet is seeking revenge for not only herself but a fox she had befriended in the past as foxes are magical creatures that mean hope, they mean peace.

There is a common understanding in ongoing series survival horror games that the first one is the moody and atmospheric one and the second one is the more action-oriented one. The same seems to be unfolding in this series. Much like og Resident Evil, this does not mean that one is necessarily better than the other, just that there is a noticeable difference in tone.

Maybe its the fox brothers I often feed in the yard these days, but I definitely vibe with this series.

It's new from Katherine Silva.
Dead Folk is the followup to Undead Folk and the second part of her Deadlands trilogy . While the first book was about loss, this second short, haunting novella is a story about revenge, a lyrical folk horror story set in a hellish, post-apocalyptic landscape that feels like an epic novel without an epic page count. It reminds me of John Wick and Mad Max as written by James Dickey, and now I can't wait to see how this story concludes when the third part of this trilogy comes out at the end of the year.

This is the follow up to UNDEAD FOLK and it's lean, fast and filled with grief and revenge. With some witchery thrown in.

It's a quick read that keeps moving forward and piling on all the emotions. "Janet" isn't giving up even when her actions make you wince.

Definitely recommend.

Bonus, I found out part 3 is coming soon.

While the first reminded me the most of The Road, this one reminded me of that and the Borderlands series combined.

Dead Folk by Katherine Silva is a tale of grief and a continued journey toward getting the revenge our main character seeks. While the first book in this series read like a gut-punch, this one was non-stop action and I thought the worst was about to happen at any moment!

Ugh, I’m SO NERVOUS to see where book three takes us!

I received an ARC of this novella in exchange for an honest review.

Cards on the table, I pre-ordered this book before signing up for the ARC because when I saw Undead Folk had a sequel, I plunged straight in without any hesitation. I only asked for an ARC because I was too excited to read the sequel to wait, and a review felt like more than a fair price to pay.

Janet is an absolutely phenomenal character. Watching this strong-headed young woman contain to face insurmountable odds that would have felled lesser people is incredible. I spent the vast majority of this novella on pins and needles, endlessly worried for what she was getting herself into and what the outcome of this entire venture would be. After failing to take her revenge on The Man in Undead Folk to avenge her father, Amos, Janet has steeled herself to take on the people truly responsible for what happened to him in an effort to make them feel even a little of the pain she did every time she lost him, and to ensure they could never do this again.

As expected, the prose in this novella was lush. The descriptions are gorgeous, and if you close your eyes, you can almost feel the blistering heat on your face and the sweetness of the flowers on the air. You can smell the salt of your own sweat and taste the grit Janet has that allows her to become who she truly is. The fact that Janet is the name she took upon herself to continue this path did not escape me; she loved Amos so much, and it's clear she always will.

I am absolutely enthralled with this beautiful, enchanting world that is touched just so by the supernatural, and this young witch and her journey to right the wrongs done to her family and to hopefully find a sense of peace at the end of it all. I cannot wait for the third novella in this series.

Dead Folk is a wonderful continuation of the post-apocalyptic story that started in Undead Folk.

It centers around Janet and the continuing (and escalating) journey of revenge she is focused on. Where Undead Folk provided the introduction to Janet and her mental state and backstory, Dead Folk builds, escalating the action and intensity dramatically!

Dead Folk is poetically written, fast paced, action packed, and violent.

I've always been drawn to post-apocalyptic works, but have viewed them as benefiting from length. There can be a lot to fit into tales involving individuals while contextualizing the downfall of civilization and the rules that are set up in the aftermath. That works for other stories, but these Folk novellas tighten the lens on a much more personal story while providing the context as needed.

I read Dead Folk having just finished Robert McCammon's Swan Song and while reading McCammon's newer work, The Border. Dead Folk is not nearly as epic in scope as those books, and it's all the better for it.

I couldn't put it down, and can't wait for the third installment.

This one is my favorite of the trilogy... has some hard-boiled, western vibes to it. Reminded me of King's The Gunslinger, which is probably the highest praise I can give anything (for me). The main character is easy to root for and feels realistic. Loved the showdown at the end of the book. The action and the gore are perfectly balanced. Couldn't recommend this one more.

This is the second book of the three-part trilogy that includes UNDEAD FOLK. This time, the revenge is on a larger scale, as the story of Janet continues and we learn that the revenge from the previous book is only the beginning. As she fights her way through the defenders of a hotel fortress, the final defender is someone unexpected that only increases the story's power.

The tale of revenge comes into full bloom in Vol 2 of The Deadlands. The violence ratchets up several degrees, while maintaining the heart & feeling of Vol 1. There are new twists and turns & a 3rd vol still to come! Can’t wait!
