I was lucky enough to have a sneak preview of this novel, and just like all his other stories I very much enjoyed it. There's our plucky, creative and determined heroine, her suspiciously clever dog (my favourite character) and a patchwork of interesting supporting characters who help - or hinder - her on her adventures around rural Derbyshire. I especially love the descriptions of the places, reading them really feels like you are there with her. But the best bit for me is the ideas and the plot - I never know what's going to happen next. In short I found it charming, surprising, amusing and so original!

It's rare to come across a book that is truly original, but imho, this is one. Though there is clearly inspiration from classic cult quarters such as Lovecraft and a smattering of, say, Midsomer Murders-esque off-key smalltown charm, I honestly didn't see where this was going. This fun and slightly discordant romp through the Peaks had me laughing, guessing and wtf-ing throughout. It's also a nice easy read without pretention from the author. I really enjoyed it.

Another Argana Zeit mystery, mixing homely life in the Derbyshire Peaks with the weird and the supernatural.
