Winston Churchill was a fascinating historical figure. An examination of his life and times necessitates a look at the world in which he moved and the obstacles he faced. That is what takes place in this novel. Churchill, the protagonist, faces a series of critical decisions that would come to define his legacy. One could certainly write a book about many aspects of this famous man’s life, but this one is mainly focused on his doings around the outbreak of the second World War. We see him grapple with various responsibilities while also trying to muddle through a personal life that quickly seems less important in the face of the tumult and chaos that has gripped the Western world.
The Beginning, by Jim Pierce, is a historical fiction novel. It may remind some viewers of the movie Darkest Hour, which featured Gary Oldman as Churchill.
Whenever a writer tries to capture the spirit of a famous historical figure, it can be a challenge. To get the speech and mannerisms down is often easy enough. However, to get at the beating heart of such a person can be next to impossible, especially when the individual being discussed is a towering colossus who made such an impact during his life.
Pierce does it admirably, though. His portrayal of Churchill is entirely convincing, from the physical description to the dialogue to the rich period detail. Really good historical fiction is rare, and it is much in evidence here. It would be hard to envision a much better way of introducing a character and pulling a reader into his world than what is accomplished in these pages.
At a time when history seems to be forgetting some of what took place in the past, this book feels important. Churchill faced extraordinary times and rose to challenges that would have broken a lesser man. Reading about his struggles and accomplishments is inspiring, and that spirit seems to be badly needed at the moment in some parts of the world.

Informative and Enlightening
I found The Beginning by Jim Pierce very informative and interesting. The author did a great job at plotting this timeless historical novel. Reading this book taught me something about Churchill that I hadn't read before. Churchill was indeed the kind of leader the country needed at that time and one would wish we had so many other Churchills in the world.
I liked the pacing of the story; I didn’t struggle to follow the story. Moreover, the author’s story telling skills are top-notch and he knew exactly how to select the right words in the right place making the story immersive and exciting. I enjoyed reading The Beginning and I highly recommend the book.

What Jim Pierce brings to me is a story of how England fought a war before the war, and how masterfully Churchill kept his nation engaged while waiting for the US to join the fight. Churchill was an amazing orator and Jim Pierce delivers this wonderfully.
