Entertaining read but...
First off, I want to express my appreciation for books featuring dark-skinned women. I also enjoy this author’s work because they know how to craft angsty and engaging scenes.
The steamy moments in the book were indeed steamy (the dubcon ones). However, the author could have provided a more convincing motivation for the female main character (FMC) to agree to sleep with the male main character (MMC). Instead of a lukewarm diatribe, a stronger rationale would have enhanced the story. In addition, phrases like "my body betrays me" or "traitorous kitty" do not adequately justify a reason to ignore the MMC toxic behavior. And besides the FMC could have explored various avenues to help her father out of financial trouble, but she seemed to give up too easily. Nevertheless, the intensity of the intimate scenes was enough for me to overlook her lack of proactive solutions.
Another thing I noticed is a recurring pattern in the author's books: the FMC's lack of backbone when it comes to family members who are in the wrong (or try to do the right thing kn the detriment of the lead), as well as the toxic traits exhibited by the male lead. The characters' portrayals often did not align with their actions, and there was a general lack of research and explanation regarding jobs/careers and socioeconomic hierarchies. Inconsistencies were also present; for example, Lea had twins, yet they were referred to as Jason and Katherine (the MMC's mother's hair color). Also, the expository dialogue and narration were excessive, with repeated mentions of how Lea met Buck and their relationship.
Speaking of Lea, the FMC's best friend, came across as unsupportive, making their friendship feel unrealistic and toxic. The MMC's best friend, Gavin, also trivialized serious issues like murder and physical assault, which felt dismissive. The FMC's father, after hearing about the MMC's actions, described them as typical of people in love, perpetuating a "boys will be boys" mentality. The supporting characters were largely one-dimensional and seemed to exist solely to downplay the MMC's actions and frame them as romantic.
While I enjoy dark and bully romances, this one didn’t meet all the criteria and left me feeling more annoyed than invested in the love story between Zora and Jackson. Especially, the lack luster climax.
Despite these issues, I persevered through the narrative. But the typos, formatting problems, and grammatical errors after the third/fourth chapters made it very difficult. Every page contained errors, which disrupted the reading flow.
But despite all of this it was an entertaining read that I binged in less than 24 hours. Because like I mentioned I love a book with a dark-skinned FMC and will always give them a read.
