Very Sweet!

Fred’s world is turned upside down when she has to deal with the arrival of PR executive, Ruby, on her development and construction project. Despite their personal clash, a chemistry between them leads to undeniable attraction, but working together makes it tricky to navigate, especially when things don’t go to plan.

Such a great story, packed with drama, lots of tension, and a ton of emotion. Ruby was already sceptical about her assignment, and I don’t think Fred’s initial frostiness at her being on site helped, but when they developed an understanding and started working together it allowed them to explore feelings further. There attraction to one another seemed to take them both by surprise, but I loved how well they got on, when they were so very different. Ruby really tried hard to respect the safety of the site and follow Fred’s rules, but I felt for her so much, as when her colleagues had ideas or visited, no matter how hard she tried, they didn’t have that respect and it was often Ruby who took the brunt of Fred’s annoyance at the actions.

When they weren’t on site, and they started exploring the history of families who had lived there in the past, they really got a chance to connect. Fred and Ruby got to see real sides to one another, rather than professional personas and they clicked. I was so happy for them, and loved each and every moment they had after that, even those laced with tension. When things took a much unexpected turn though, and Fred got hurt, my heart broke for them and I worried they’d lost everything they’d worked for. I tried to have hope, and willed Ruby to try harder to get her side of things across to Fred and hopefully get back on track.

I loved this! They were joined by a whole cast of different characters, some who really infuriated me and I hoped Ruby and Fred wouldn’t allow them to have an effect on their future together. A great romance, that was most enjoyable, and something a little bit different.

This is the first book I have read by this author. But it definitely will not be my last. Butch construction foreman meets Femme PR promoter. Fred's job is to safely do a rebuild of a block of houses. Ruby's job is to make everyone want to move in. There is a clash from the first time they meet. Jo tells a wonderful story with strong women characters. She describes everything in such detail, I can imagine being there. There is also a great supporting cast. Plenty of ups and downs. Friction and spicy. I highly recommend this book.

U.K. based, and although more UK settings these days, it still feels like a treat. What is also a treat, is how normal the families seem. Sausage and mash, with ketchup for tea? Sign me up.
Around 40% I felt pacing stuttered a bit. There is no real barrier so no real tension. There is the odd blip but they are, to my mind, a bit repetitive. One gets carried away with an idea, the other doesn’t like it.
At around 50% no more tension but I am enjoying learning a bit more. Or at least the bit with less repetitive push pull. The push pull continued. The break up arc happened and the last 25% held the tension I'd been missing.

Opposites collide in Back to Back by Jo Fletcher. A heartwarming workplace romance set within the UK. As the story unfolds, you can feel the lively hustle and bustle of English cities contrasting with the serene calmness of the Welsh countryside.

Fred Caffrey is a construction manager responsible for transforming the old back-to-back houses in Boot Street, Manchester, into something new and vibrant. Health and safety onsite are the top priority for Fred, who is all too aware of where responsibility for any issues lies.

Ruby Lewis, a bubbly and respected PR Executive, is heading up to Manchester from London to bring her marketing expertise to Fred's project.

The characters that captured my attention were Fred and a secondary character Adrienne, which surprised me. However, Fred and Ruby's chemistry is impossible to ignore. The pace of the book and dynamics of the characters make you want to keep turning the pages.

I received an ARC for an honest review. Thank you, Butterworth books.

PR woman meets site manager of an iconic Boot Street development and two very different worlds collide.
Worlds that, however, find each other very attractive.
Over time it becomes clear that there aren't that many differences.
Ruby thinks she's landed a completely different assignment for her next project than working on a construction site and renovation project up north.
She is disappointed, but tries to see the best in it.
She can visit her sister in the north more often.

Fred gets her first construction site as site manager and wants to do everything right and according to the rules.
A beauty, wearing high heels who isn't dressed according to the rules, is actually not on her agenda at all.
Nevertheless, there is a certain attraction right from the start.
Although everything starts off a bit rocky and Ruby seems to have to apologize more than she would like, the path to each other is an inevitable one.
But doubts, self-imposed limits based on past experiences and an uncertain future cause this path to falter.
The chemistry between Ruby and Fred is unmistakable and both are aware of it.
Like for everyone around them too and that just makes it harder.
Despite the difficulties and hurdles, that have to be overcome, it is still a light and sweet romance and the two are hot together.
A good enemies to lovers romance needs drama ;)
That is definitely provided and leads to a very sweet happy ending!
Thanks for this beautiful story and to Robyn and Jo for the ARC!

I find it hard to believe that this is only Jo Fletcher’s 2nd Sapphic novel. Her writing draws you in and immerses you in a story that keeps you turning the pages! Her characters are strong, albeit with flaws. Rigid and carefree. Both with their own ideas and proven strategies that have gotten then where they are.

The MC’s in this book are strong, independent, and stubborn. You have Fred, who was given the construction manager’s position on a new site. She has the respect of her crew, but she wants to make sure that she follows all safety procedures and guidelines for this project.

Then you have Ruby, who is a PR agent sent to promote this project. She thought she would get to cover other areas that she wanted to but was sent here instead.

Both MC’s meet at the construction site on the first day and they don’t get off to a good start. Fred is upset as she watches Ruby make her way through the site with no safety equipment and in heels!

Both MC’s clash constantly on site. Ruby proposes PR events for the project and Fred comes up with reasons it’s not safe, yet both have an attraction to each other that neither one acts on. Will they ever find common ground, and will they both give into their attraction or not?

I didn’t expect to get so much enjoyment from a romance centred on a construction site but believe me it works! Ms Fletcher has once again taken romance by the horns and added more than a little trouble into the mix; and in doing so created a strong and interesting story.

Fred is a construction site manager on her first managerial job and anxious to get the job done right, on time, in budget and safely. Ruby works for a PR consultancy and is employed to promote the design of the future housing on the site.
Fred with work boots and construction site clothing and Ruby in beautiful suits and dresses and very high heels, live in very different worlds. But we find over the course of the book, that those things aren’t so different at all.

These two characters are written very realistically, and I love the way they are portrayed. By the way, who knew axe throwing was a pastime? Alongside these are a cast of characters like the ex-girlfriend who is still hankering after something, the director who has had some cosmetic work done in Turkey and is difficult and Trix the old friend, who maybe wants something more?

It's a beautifully written story and I can both picture the setting and smell the city air. You need this book in your life.

Back to back is a delightful read with a rollercoaster of emotions and a cast of characters that really stick with you long after you finish reading.

It's difficult to believe that this is just the author's second release, as from the moment you start reading you will find yourself captivated by the story, the characters, the setting... all of it has a charm about it that made it impossible to put down. Set against the backdrop of a construction site, this is not your typical contemporary romance. With fiery and ambitious young PR manager Ruby, and quietly determined construction boss Fred, the story has more than its share of twists and turns, but every single one of them pulls you deeper into the unique and enjoyable plot. The vibrant characters that surround them add to the charm and bring the story to life in wonderful ways that feel very familiar and comfortable, yet still surprising and fresh.

Be prepared to live every moment of the growing attraction and deepening desire to avoid the complication of romance as Fred and Ruby's story winds its way into your heart and leaves its mark, but be warned - this won't be the last Jo Fletcher book you will want to read!

Jo Fletcher’s newest novel, Back to Back, delivers a page-turning opposites attract romance. Fred, named after her grandmother Winifred, is no delicate flower. She’s a handsome butch that’s landed the top job managing a massive construction site. She’s damn good at her job and doesn’t get distracted until Ruby waltzes in as a PR exec from London. Ruby’s cute, bubbly personality and slight Welsh accent attract Fred’s attention. But is it for keeps or a catch-and-release?

I found the plot pacing good, but the second half was more gripping. The characters are well-developed. I liked that both main characters rose from working-class families to their current prominent positions through hard work. The setting is in the United Kingdom, mainly in the city of Manchester. Being an American, I find it fascinating that some British phrases and words are quite different from American jargon. And I had no idea that axe throwing was such a big hobby in the UK.

So, relax in a comfy chair with a pale ale, a glass of wine, or another drink of your choice, and enjoy Ms. Fletcher’s Back to Back.

A Heartwarming Story On A Construction Sight (Of All Places)!

Jo Fletcher is going to be an author people are going to talk about. After a very strong book debut, I couldn’t wait to read her next one. “Back to Back” was another powerhouse. Fred is in charge of a very large construction sight and being the first women to do it has a lot of pressure on her, so no distractions are needed. Ruby works for a marketing firm that has been hired by the board to promote the new building for the neighborhood. But when Ruby walks onto Fred’s construction sight, she does everything wrong and Fred is a stickler for safety. The story takes you through the pressures on Fred, like a board member who is after her, an ex who thinks Fred can be used anytime(also on the board) and Ruby who is like a chaos but in a sweet adorable way. With all this on her something has to give. After all her name is on the sight and anything going wrong will be on her watch. Enjoyed this book and this coupling so much.
Great job Jo!

Jo Fletcher has shown vast improvement since her first book in her writing style. This was easy to read and follow along. Sometimes, it felt a bit repetitive. However, most of those instances were what brought out their chemistry, connection, and sparks.
I liked the characters' persona, and most of the friction was understood when the MC was explaining herself. The secondary characters were well flushed out and added to the storyline. They were a good support system for the MCs.
The angst was beautifully done. I understand why it kept growing and caused more chaos. I wish I knew why one MC was so angry at some points, I felt it was misplaced for a stoic character. However, the entire reconciliation, when finally resolved, was beautiful. I am not sure how long it took for the couple to get back together.
Overall, this was a great book to read. Even when distracted, I was able to pick it back up and remember what was going on. I feel great things in our future with Jo Fletcher as an author.

I enjoyed the emotional rollercoaster this story took me on. When the spirited and chaotic Ruby arrives to manage PR for newly promoted construction manager Fred, they don’t get off to a good start. Can opposites truly attract, or are they too different to find common ground?

Jo Fletcher's talent for creating believable, flawed, yet loveable characters shines in her second book. Each character is meticulously crafted, drawing you not only into the story but also into the hearts and minds of Ruby and Fred. Fletcher’s writing is immersive, making it impossible not to become invested in the characters’ journeys.

I loved every beautifully written word, and can’t wait to see what Jo Fletcher writes next.

Back to Back is an opposites attract contemporary romance about a down to earth construction site manager and a PR executive who is determined to shake things up. Who knew high heels and a construction site don’t mix? And it just develops from there!
This second book by Jo Fletcher is beautifully written, the characters are well rounded and are authentic, and the plot pulls you along as you root for Fred and Ruby, the wonderfully flawed protagonists. It was very refreshing to have people from ordinary backgrounds succeeding to responsible jobs through their own graft and merit.
You get a real sense of the locations (mainly Manchester) and I loved some of the secondary characters too.
This is a lovely summer read and I thoroughly recommend it.

I really enjoyed this book. Ruby and Fred are total opposites. Ruby - a total femme and PR manager - shows up at the construction site in heels and a skirt. Fred gets upset as this is her first time leading the construction site and she’s a stickler for following the safety rules. And that’s how we start - attraction at first site and opposites attract. You can feel the tension right away and it continues through the book.

Flawed but fabulous characters that you can’t stop reading about.

I recommend!

Jo’s story has a cute, butch construction site manager, Fred, who runs into problems with the PR consultant sent to her build. Ruby has a job to do and falling for the head butch in charge isn’t in her plans. Lucky for us, Jo has written a fun journey with these two MCs. The secondary characters in this story will keep you entertained, as well, If you want a relaxing read with a few laughs and lots of love, pick this one up. Enjoy!

This one of those reads that grab you and shake you up then gently put you down totally changed!

Jo Fletcher has written a story to be proud of. Her characters demand your attention, the setting brings an intensity that holds you and the story flows through you. I can’t believe that this is the first story that I have read by Jo Fletcher. It certainly won’t be the last! I love the style of her writing and the seamless flow right to the end.

I loved this book - not only is it set in Manchester (home town) but it highlights the talent and progress of a working class girl. Leading a team in the ups and downs of a male dominated field. The love hate relationship she develops with the promotions advertiser develops throughout the story. Ooh but she’s frustrating!

Packs a Punch

I give this 5* because it's good, the writing and impact are good, and the main characters are easy to identify with. I did have some impatience with the pace though and would give 4* for that part. Through the middle I just wanted it to "hurry up". But hang in there, it packs a punch and I'm glad I finished it. Give it a try.

There is so much to love about this book. Beautifully written with lovely descriptions, wonderful supporting characters that I wanted to have a cuppa with, or perhaps a couple of glasses of champers, and I love the unexpected elements of this story. This book is clever, has real warmth to its characters, but there is also a riveting, and complicated, love story that kept me turning the pages.

Who doesn't love the opposite attracts them. Two strong main characters who are different but finally acknowledged their attraction for one another. And come to agreement about the work site. A good read.

Everyone else has gone over the general plot in their reviews so I won’t reiterate. I enjoyed the butch/femme dynamic and job differences between the two main characters. The buildup was slow but realistic to me and I did enjoy the eventual sizzle.
