Lawyer Sarah Henley hopes to salvage her career by accepting an assignment few other attorneys would want. The fact that her opponent will be her former lover Joe Burke only sweetens the deal. He broke her heart six years ago, and she’s never understood why. Now she has a chance to even the score by beating him on the battlefield.
But things rarely go as planned either in love or the law.
Elizabeth Ruston is the pen name of award-winning young adult author Robin Brande. She is a former trial attorney, entrepreneur, community college instructor, yoga instructor, martial artist, and outdoor adventurer. http://www.robinbrande.com.
4.5 Stars. Really surprised me how much I liked this bk, the cover more or less looked like a fluff romance, but so not the case. Starts right off with 2 lawyers Joe/Sarah surprised by meeting up again on opposing sides of a case after not having seen each other for 6 years. Having abruptly broken up in law school, the h is left without a reason why. Does this intelligent, witty, clever little attorney have some anger/hate going on for the H/Joe her former lover…you betcha. But she’s incredibly strong willed, determined, calm, cool and collected not to let on his being on the case affects her in the least. She had some tough breaks professionally along the way which made her mentally, physically and emotionally stronger. Both Joe/Sarah are on an assignment neither wants but needs to prove themselves in their careers. Need to mention here that this is not just a romance there’s a very clever legal plot going on too. You just know the intense feelings each still has for the other is just below the surface but rather than explode they slowly evolve then explode. At one point in the story, I was starting to worry that my high praise for Sarah was gonna wane just a bit and she was going to pull a dummy-dum-dum move, but ah ha, the author is much more clever with a bigger plan in mind. Very satisfying. This is a smart, sharp story with sadly a more abrupt HEA than I would have liked. Yes this is a series and although I have no idea what the author has planned for bk 2 I’m guessing bk 2 will be about new characters, although I wouldn’t mind more of Sarah/Joe as they move along in their life together. What I thought might be fluff ended up being a page turner that was smart, witty, clever and very worth my time and $5.99. Would definitely recommend this one.
I thoroughly enjoyed Elizabeth Ruston's latest novel Love Proof. The characters are well rounded and thought out. They have their foibles, which make them feel more true to life. This story really explores the concept of love and hate being two sides of the same coin. When you have a very smart female lawyer, placed in opposition to a lawyer who was the love of her life and broke her heart, there are scenes of terrific tension, heart break and then, as any good romance would have, a happy ending. Yes, there are scenes of hot sex, but more than that...the love between these two characters will make you cheer when then bend (maybe break) some rules to be together.
Ruston brings her knowledge and experience, as a former trail lawyer, to this novel as you follow scenes from the conference rooms to the law offices.I enjoyed learning more about the law process, during the class action suit, where Sarah & Joe are engaged against one another. This is a delightful read that will surely please any lover of romance novels.
I admit it: I absolutely adore the "hate to love" trope. That definitely drew me in to this book, as did the legal aspect. As a former trial attorney, the author makes the law come alive through the perspective of Sarah Henley. I loved how while this book is definitely a romance, it also had that legal plot line as well. It was an important part of the book and it gave the story a larger framework than just 'will there/won't there be a HEA'.
I think my favourite thing about Elizabeth Ruston's novels is that the main characters have flaws, especially the love interests, which makes them seem all the more like real people. Here we meet Joe Burke who at face value appears like a nice guy who is also pretty swoony, yet we know he treated Sarah horribly in the past, so how can we trust him? Then we have Sarah who is stubborn and likes to win a little too much -- so much so that it's not enough that she ignore the man who hurt her; she wants to make him suffer for what he did.
This book is a great journey in appreciating the chemistry between two characters and wanting them to be together, and yet not fully trusting that it won't end badly. You go on that journey of whether to trust Joe and finding out the past along with Sarah, really empathizing with her and wanting the best for her.
Basically the best comparison I can give this book is that it was like a sexy episode of The Good Wife! I really enjoyed this read -- a perfect way to kick off the new year.
In "Love Proof", lawyer Sarah Henley must work opposite her former lover from college, Joe Burke. He broke her heart six years prior and never had the decency to tell her why. This premise may sound too simple, but in the hands of the talented Ms. Ruston a solid, compelling love story unfolds. I definitely lost sleep reading this while on vacation.
The romance is hot, the legal proceedings are entwined just enough to give context but not overwhelm the story, and the characters are likable and credible. But not perfect. When the romance is re-ignited, Sarah and Joe face an ethical issue, working on opposing sides of the same case. How that unfolds, as well as Sarah's own reservations about Joe, create the obstacles they must overcome. It's a reminder that despite mistakes made along the way, everyone has the power to become a better version of themselves.
Sit back, relax, and enjoy a great read. You won't be disappointed.
Elizabeth Ruston has another romantic hit with Love Proof. The heroine, Sarah Henley, is smart and brilliant and so much fun to follow as she re-builds her life in the law and in love. Ruston gives us such smart and funny banter between Henley and the hero, Joe Burke. All of the side characters are recognizable to anyone who has worked in a business or office. It is great to see behind-the-scenes in the world of law. Ruston combines a romantic plot with a legal plot with unending twists and turns that leave the reader wanting more when the story ends. This is a great read for the reader who wants a great story with many romantic interludes. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves great fiction and great romance.
This Hoopla borrow wound up being quite good. It was a contemporary romance without a 50 page big misunderstanding at the end. You don’t see that very often.
This a good book and I quite enjoyed reading it. I would have liked to give it the perfect marks but I'm having a few issues with the editing and the main focus of the book. I think I'll start with focus.
I know this book is classified as a romance book (and the author tried hard to make it as such) but I think this book is not that at all. This book would have been better if this has been written with a focus on the case and Sarah's sleuthing and the romance on the back burner. Sarah is an interesting and strong character but she's not really a romantic lead. The most interesting part of her character are her lawyering and sleuthing skills and not her romantic entanglements.
Having said that, I think this book could use a little more editing. This is written in a first-person narrative and I know Sarah is an intelligent person and has a lot on her mind at all times but the author does NOT need to write every single thing in her mind.
But the storyline I think is very fresh and original. I am not a lawyer and I hardly know the judicial process but I really enjoyed the deposition scenes and I really liked reading about the case itself. I was actually looking forward to it rather than the romance itself which is ironic since I choose to read this book because of the romance.
But I still wish that the problems of both the characters should have solved. I like reading an HEA, which it was in terms of romance, I just wish I could have read an HEA in terms of their professional life as well. They deserved better than being shut down like that, they had more work ethics than all the other characters in the book combined who were enjoying a satisfying professional life.
Really enjoyed I've had it on my kindle for ages , but strangely have a different authors name on my copy , will definitely read more from this author , very detailed but simple to follow law case with a great love story hidden amongst it all
While I loved the legal aspect of this book, two opposing counsels on a products liability case, I felt that the relationship between the two main characters was a little forced.
Truly loved this book. And can't wait for more of this type of story line from Ruston. Was enchanted from the beginning to end. Couldn't put it down. She is now one of my new favs.
