Blood Hunt and the first part of this was a mess. However I was taken by the events surrounding Sparrow and her Grandfather....The Vulture. Plus Black Panther.
Blood Hunt strikes Miles Morales, and brings with it even more problems than just becoming a vampire, although that's happening too.
The first two issues here are a rehash of the last time Miles and Hightail fought R'hym'r (forgive me if the apostrophes are in the wrong place, it's a dumb name), with some inconsistent artwork.
The following four issues then bring Miles together with Starling and Black Panther as the Vulture strikes. Half of these issues are fight scenes, one of them is Black Panther going on a science tirade, and the rest is just kind of...there. I like the relationship drama for Starling and Vulture, but it's another case of Miles feeling like a supporting character in his own book that's become prevalent over this run. It's not bad, but these four issues feel scattershot, with the two plotlines kind of warring instead of working together.
A volume whose first part - mediocre and badly drawn - ends in Blood Hunt. Shame, eh? The second part, dealing with the consequences of this event, is vaguely less bad and reintroduces a classic villain from the original Spidey. But the rest will be without me.
WARNING: You must read Blood Hunt before diving into this Volume.
Miles' world has completely upended now that he's a vampire. Still not taken the plunge to feast, his anger is expressing itself through more powerful venom blasts. This is Miles as you have not seen him before. Highlights: - Just after the end of the Blood Hunt event, Miles teams up with Bloodline to take down R'ym'r, a powerful vampire we've seen in the Marvel Universe before. - Trying to remain calm to help stem off the hunger, Miles reaches out to his girlfriend, the hero known as Starling. Being the granddaughter of Vulture brings the green winged villain to fight Miles, but his new strenght pushes him to go just a bit too far. - Dr Samson recommends seeing Misty Knight and Dr Kwan for assistance with his vampirism, but they call in Black Panther, someone who recently got rid of his vampiric infection. Panther gives Miles a new vibranium suit, which should help control his cravings a bit more through venom blast optimization. - Miles and Vulture fight again, but Starling stops the fight and no longer wants Adrian in her family. - Panther and Miles head off to Wakanda to see if his vampirism can be taken away.
Good Volume, lots of action. Can't wait for the next one. Recommend.
This series will stay low rated until they figure out what to DO with Miles...
'Blood Hunt' ended with Miles being turned into a Daywalker (vampire). It's been a struggle for him on all fronts. He's got to juggle home, school, superheroing, and a superhero gf....and now with a hunger for blood?
This collection is his 'team' rallying around him, trying to figure out how best to deal with the 'new normal'. Doc Sasquatch has updates on how his bio electric powers are messing with his new vampiric abilities. Misty Knight uses her connections to bring in another hero who's been affected by the vampire curse...Black Panther. What does T'Challa do? He gifts Miles ANOTHER new supersuit. This has got to be the 300th new outfit that Miles has worn. This one includes vibranium e'rywhere. It's even got vibranium laced spider webbing (somebody tell me how he gets that refilled and/or stored). The plan is with the new suit regulating his bio electric abilities, and T'Challa guided meditations, he might be able to shed the vampiric curse like Black Panther did.
While all this is going on, we've got Starling's grandfather, Vulture blaming Spider-Man for being generally horrible and a bad influence. ======= Bonus: Vulture suddenly has Archangel wings as an option and no OTHER upgrade?! Bonus Bonus: How many issues until they give Miles ANOTHER set of powers or a new suit?
Honestly the back half of this volume raises my score in it quite a bit. Judicious use of Black Panther and Starling, but also letting Vulture loom as the rogue for a whole four issues felt paced nicely to focus on where Miles is at on his journey with vampirism (which is fun but I’m okay if they eliminate from his storyline in short order). Like most of the Blood Hunt content, the first half of this was a boring retread of stories I’ve already read before that are being dipped back into because they include vampires. R’ym’r is trivial and kinda dopey in the issue he appears in and honestly just focusing more on the interplay between Miles and Hightail would have been a lot more compelling.
Not great, but not exactly outright terrible, either. This volume follows Miles as he deals with his vampirism at the hands of Blade during the Blood Hunt event. T'Challa, who was similarly inconvenienced and managed to come out the other side, is on-hand to help Miles out. Plus there are a couple of epic battles with the Vulture, for some reason. The artwork is a bit too frenetic and cartoony at times. It's too bad there was no interaction between Miles and his family in this one, but the end is kind of promising: to cure his vampirism, Miles must go with the Black Panther...to Wakanda!
Miles deals with becoming a vampire, sort of. It all seems to come pretty easy for him. Then Black Panther shows up and gives him a new trash looking costume. Miles is constantly getting new costumes. Are these all getting turned into toys or something? A lot of the arc is the Vulture back in the picture trying to kill Miles because he thinks he turned Starling against him. It's not great. Here's hoping we can actually go a full year now without getting interrupted by an event. It hasn't happened yet.
I just really hate this storyline. Making Miles a vampire feels like a dumb gimmick, one that I dearly hope runs its course very soon. That we never see Miles talking to his family about this sort of underlines what a dumb idea this whole thing is.
