A strange encounter with one of Professor Ivo’s robotic creations leads Superman into a stranger struggle with spy agency Checkmate, mercenary Slade Wilson, and even the government of the United States! What does the artificial intelligence known as Amazo want from Superman, and is it friend or foe?Head writer of My Adventures with Superman Josie Campbell teams up with artist extraordinaire Pablo M. Collar ( Legacy Cowl, Sword of Azrael) to bring their super fresh take on the young Man of Steel. Set in between seasons 1 and 2, this is an untold tale from the early years of Superman’s legacy!
Josie Campbell was born in Staten Island, NY, grew up in a small town Kodak, near the Smokey Mountains in East Tennessee. This is the first book written, assisted and inspired by an education at the University of Tennessee, life's work with animals, and being raised by English Professor and novelist Professor Claude Campbell, and fellow colleague and close friend of Professor Campbell, Frank McCourt.
“It’s someone terrified of being hurt. Someone terrified they’ll hurt others. Someone scared of who he is. I know what that feels like, Lois. And I will never turn my back on that.”
Set between seasons 1 and 2 of the amazing, adorable animated show My Adventures with Superman, this comic follows Clark Kent as he navigates what is going to be his first Christmas away from his parents, Ma and Pa Kent. His girlfriend, Lois Lane, and best friend, Jimmy Olsen, are determined to make this the best Christmas ever for him, but their plans of an awesome week of cool activities are wrecked when Metropolis is attacked by a strange robotic villain.
I love the TV show My Adventures with Superman (it is my favorite DC TV show ever) so when I saw, on the shelf of a comic book shop I visited, an extra story set in that world following these characters I adore, I grabbed it immediately. If I had known this book was so focused on Christmas, I would've read it in December but, oh well. I had a great time with this book despite reading it during the wrong festive season and it made me want to rewatch the show immediately. I love these iterations of these characters so much and I absolutely adore the anime-inspired art style of the show and this comic. The story felt authentic to the source material's vibe and gave me all the feels.
I always love Superman but this version of him has to be one of the sweetest, most wholesome Clarks ever. I loved how this story highlighted his endless capacity for empathy and how he is determined to protect all kinds of life, even the lives of creatures and beings some people do not see as human – in this case, a robot's. If someone asks for his help, he will give his all to help them. He is also just a silly goofy guy utterly besotted with his girlfriend and eager to tell everyone about what a great baker his Ma is and that just gets to me. Despite all his superpowers, he is so so human. This version of Lois Lane also has to be one of my favourites. She is her usual chaotic, determined, clever and brave self, and I just love how happily she throws herself into dangerous situations, how she thrives in situations that require improvisation and quick thinking (such as breaking into the secret areas of an army lab). It was great seeing glimpses of her complex relationship with her father whom she defied at the end of season 1 to protect Clark – seeing her visibly saddened by her estranged relationship with him while witnessing the closeness of the Kents made me feel really bad for her. Jimmy was a hoot, as always. I love his obsession with conspiracy theories and he's just such a sweet, good guy and pal. It was so cute that his secret Christmas surprise for Clark was to Jimmy and Lois also make a great and endlessly amusing duo – they don't have superpowers but they are every bit as heroic as Clark is.
Clark and Lois are one of my favorite couples from the DC universe. While their romance is in no way at the center of this comic whenever they were together, I was grinning cause they are so damn cute. I loved this moment, when Lois tells Clark that what they are about to do might be dangerous and he might need her and Jimmy as backup and he says: “Then it’s good I have the one and only Lois Lane by my side.” The amount of respect, love and admiration he has for her is so sweet. Also, whenever I get to see Superman flying around with Lois Lane in their arms, I am happy. It's such an iconic image.
Amazo was an interesting character. I am a sucker for stories about people who were raised to be weapons, killers and monsters refusing to obey their "masters" or "makers" and choosing their own path, deciding to be better. Seeing Clark and Amazo bond over the shadiness of their pasts and their homeworlds was lovely, as was the emphasis on bodily and mental autonomy and everyone's right to decide who they are for themselves. I was quite emo when, in the end, Amazo
One of the key themes of this book was family and all the different ways to be a family. Pa Kent explains to Amazo that even though they are not Clark's biological parents, Clark is their son. And the people Clark loves – his friends, his girlfriend, everyone – is also part of their family. This quote got me in the feels: “See, we adopted Clark. But he’s still our family. It can be hard evern for other humans to understand. But the day Clark fell to Earth, our life became… more. More people to love. Not just Clark, but everyone he brought in: his friends, his classmaes… Jimmy… Lois. Each time he brings someone in, our family grows. For the better.” As a huge fan of the found family trope, I ate all this up. All of this cuteness with the Kents – and Pa Kent's words about how loving someone doesn't mean you cannot make mistakes with them and how important it is to be able to apologise and change – was a stark contrast to Lois's more shattered, sad family dynamics.
I would recommend this comic to any fan of this TV show. I think you could technically read this without having watched it, but there might be a handful of scenes that might go over your head a little bit without prior knowledge of this show and its lore. This was a cute, heartfelt, optimistic and charming little story and I will treasure it on my shelves forever.
It's been a busy year for Clark Kent in Metropolis and, facing his first Christmas away from Smallville, Lois and Jimmy decide to help him have the best time possible. That is, at least, until Amazo appears. A self aware AI being hunted by both Checkmate and Task Force X.
An interesting take on the 'Superman' mythos, Campbell keeps this adventure light, but heartfelt. The art is in keeping with the style of the TV series and looks impressive on the page.
I already loved the animated series so I knew I was going to love this issue! I love how it kinda happens before the main events in season 2 and is a simple but interesting story revolving around a new character! Overall i’d love to see another volume in this series and can’t wait for season 3 of the show to come out!
This YA adventure takes place soon after the end of Season 1 of the animated series and is written by one of the writer/producers of the show, so it very much feels like an extension of the series. The artwork by Pablo Collar also very much captures the anime look of the series. This series takes place in an interesting alternate universe early in Superman's career. As such, he makes some mistakes but it's an endearing take. Many of the supporting cast are familiar but different enough to provide many surprises to veteran Superman fans. The overall theme of the book is how we choose our families and how families grow as new friends are made. It's a quick and entertaining read.
A between seasons story of a cartoon I've never watched. But judging from this book, it's probably a fun watch. I think it's a good read on a young Clark, and Lois is a strong co-star for him. Not a fan of the new design, boy band coded design for Slade. The story felt a little long, especially because I imagine the audience is going to be on the younger side. At least, this felt like it was targeting a middle grade audience.
Best thing about this being finished is I can finally watch season 2!! What a fun story with huge stakes. I wasn’t expecting this to get as big as it did for a short series set between two seasons of a show. It really shows how good the actors were though, every word bubble was perfectly read in my head in their voices. I hope to see parts of this appear in the show. Solid solid read.
Set between the first and second seasons of the show, My Adventures With Superman captures the whimsy and fun of the show, unsurprisingly since Josie Campbell's on hand to write it. There's no denying that this definitely feels like a story that could have taken place on the show itself, and it has a very big heart behind it. Amazo and Clark's bonding is cute, and Lois & Jimmy trying to make Clark's first Christmas away from home perfect is adorable.
I did find that the latter half of the book felt like a bit of a re-tread of the Supergirl stuff from the second season however, which makes me wonder if this was the reason they didn't go with this story in the show, right down to the big energy beam/self-sacrifice/family loves you types of themes.
The art's neat too, evoking the anime-esque style of the show while still being its own thing.
Worth a look for fans of the show, and might entice non-fans into checking it out, so we'll call that a win overall.
Ugh, Clarky being the best of us ALWAYS. Lois is such a freaking menace in this, I adore her. Granted, I 'm not super knowledgable on what she's like in general Superman canon, but I absolutely can't with her in this one. Also, Jimmy is freaking adorable. I love every iteration of him I have read so far. Ugh, the dude who was like "I don't care how many thousands die as long as I get the glory of being the savior" hit a little too on the nose in the current climate we are in. I love the way in which Clark is able to see himself in innocents; in people who on the surface level might not have something in common with him. I saw it in Smashes the Klan and in some of Action Comics and now this. I'm so glad this is one of his main components.
The story is fun, with a strong heart, and Campbell obviously has the characters' voices down rock solid. Easily four stars, if not more.
The art, sadly, wasn't quite up to the same standard - definitely some lack of clarity in the visual storytelling (the opening narration describes the childhood feeling of new-fallen snow, but no snow appears until nearly ten pages later - and even then, it rarely reappears; action sequences are difficult to follow; characters' locations seem to switch erratically) and the designs of the various armors/Amazo could've used more variation.
Are you watching the new Superman show? No? What are you doing here? Catch up quick, because this takes place between Season 1 and 2.
This arc is about Amazo in this universe. It's, arguably, one of the best Amazo stories. Connected to Superman and his Kryptonian pass, it humanizes the power draining robot. ---- Bonus: Jimmy's Flamebird banking account countdown starts HERE
I was crying. I love this version of Superman and this comic did the show justice giving us the gap between season 1 and 2, I believe. Clark is the ever loving dork and his pals Jimmy and Lois are spectacular characters that make you wonder why they didn't make more adventures movies about the 3 of them.
A great spin-off of the My Adventures with Superman TV show! I just love how sweet and sappy this version of Superman is. This story is full of love and joy.
Clark is soo baby girl in this! I love the show and this is a great companion to it. I love anything that talks about the importance of found family. I would die for Ma and Pa Kent.
Super cute companion to the TV series! An entertaining enough story and charming art style, but I do wish it gave more Christmas vibes :3 overall a fun little comic
