Prior to his first professional work, Tynion was a student of Scott Snyder's at Sarah Lawrence College. A few years later, he worked as for Vertigo as Fables editor Shelly Bond's intern. In late 2011, with DC deciding to give Batman (written by Snyder) a back up feature, Tynion was brought in by request of Snyder to script the back ups he had plotted. Tynion would later do the same with the Batman Annual #1, which was also co-plotted by Snyder. Beginning in September 2012, with DC's 0 issue month for the New 52, Tynion will be writing Talon, with art by Guillem March. In early 2013 it was announced that he'd take over writing duties for Red Hood and the Outlaws in April.

Tynion is also currently one of the writers in a rotating team in the weekly Batman Eternal series.

Holy Cowabunga, Batman!

This hardcover TPB edition collects “Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” #1-6, plus an extensive art gallery of all regular and variant covers in the title, and some character sketches.

Creative Team:

Writer: James Tynion IV

Illustrator: Freddie Williams II

HOLY AWESOME EDITION, BATMAN!

The first thing that got me amazed about this hardcover edition is that it doesn’t have a dust cover but the graphic cover is actually attached to the hardcover material, that I think it’s cooler and it minimizes the possibilities of damaging the cover of the book.

Full color (with an amazing color job!) on prestige paper.

And featuring a section with the regular and variant covers in the run.

Certainly it’s a bargain with the quality of the publication and all the material contained.

CERTIFIED COWABUNGA MATERIAL!

When I found this TPB on my local comic book store, I thought that it’d be like the crossover that I bought some months ago of Ghostbusters/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and don’t get me wrong, since I loved it, but it was a “light reading for fun” (that it doesn’t anything wrong about it) and even while the Ghostbusters have a prominent role in the story, the Turtles hardly did anything relevant to contribute in the success in the battle against the story’s villain.

BUT…

…here, it was one heck better reading than I’d expected, taking in account that this kind of crossover titles are usually for fan service without much depth in the narrative, however, happily I can tell you that this story, while obviously have its good amount of fan service…

…it does contain a smart story, showing the strengths of the characters (Batman's detective skills, Splinter's wisdom, Schredder's masterplanning), good dialogues and knock-out artwork.

This TPB certainly can please to any fan of Batman and/or the TMNT, but also other readers looking for a cool adventure to read.

ANOTHER PLACE, ANOTHER EARTH!

I didn’t understand why IDW Publications complicated itself on the Ghostbusters/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, setting that while both teams operate in New York City, they are from two different NYCs, from two different dimensions. Both titles were from IDW and both were from the same city, so why making them from separate parallel Earths?

However, since this crossover at hand, was from two different publishing houses, DC and IDW, and they operate in different cities, Gotham and New York, for not saying that Gotham City is a totally fictional city, it’s totally fair to use here, the angle of parallel dimensions, in fact, that element is essential in the plot of the story.

THE BAT, THE RAT & THE TURTLES!

General Krang insidiously thought that he can two birds with one stone, well actually there weren’t birds in the equation but four turtles, one rat, one ninja master and one heck of ninja warriors…

…Krang sent to another parallel Earth, our heroes: Leonardo, Donatello, Michaelangelo and Raphael, with their teacher, Splinter, along the villains: the Schredder and a lot of his Foot Clan ninjas…

…and guess which Earth was?

Yep.

DC’s Earth (duh!), and right to Gotham City!

So, Schredder started to steal technology from several companies in Gotham City to build a trans-dimensional portal, and while the TMNT want to get back to their own Earth too, they are heroes, dude!, so they are doing their best to stop the Foot Clan’s robberies…

…but you can’t mess in Gotham City without attracting the attention of the Dark Knight!

And certainly the new visitors in Gotham not only draw in The Batman, but also luring some of the crimelords like The Penguin and Ra’s al Ghul!

But that’s not all!

Since, the travel to another dimension causes some unexpected after effects like…

…starting to make inert the mutagen in the bodies of the Turtles and Master Splinter, and if they get back soon, they’ll reverse to their original non-mutant states!

The Caped Crusader and the Heroes in a Half Shell combined forces against one of the most dangerous menaces that Gotham City has ever faced!

"Guys, we are agreed on the most important point, right? THAT DUDE WAS FREAKING AWESOME! . . . Unless he is a bad dude. Then, he is at least 40% less awesome. Or does that make him more awesome? Hmm, I'm going to have to make some charts." -- an awed Michelangelo, to his tortoise brethren after their first dust-up with the Dark Knight

A surprisingly good and inspired crossover event featuring the Big Apple's unlikely reptilian quartet of crimefighters teaming with Gotham City's feared guardian of the night to boldly slug it out with some of their notable adversaries, who are also joining forces. What I had (wrongly) figured to possibly be a marginal or even silly cash-grab of a concept - something that could be churned out on autopilot or have been completely forgettable - turned out to be one action-packed and yet nicely dramatic graphic novel with moments of effective humor. (It goes without saying that Batman and the TMNT gang will initially experience a head-on collision of sorts due to personality differences.) The importance of having / relying on a family unit - and this goes for both sets of title characters - is also a theme touched on and handled very well going into the pitch-perfect conclusion.

One of the best company crossovers I've ever read. Tynion characterizes everyone perfectly. Freddie Williams II provides the best art of his career. It's truly stunning. It was fun, exciting, and full of adventure. What a pleasant surprise. Most of these crossovers are all fluff and no substance.

Received an advance copy from DC and Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

After I reviewed the DC/Looney Tunes comics mash-up, Sud666 reminded me there are many such improbable pairings, including this one where the brooding Batman and the zany, cartoony Turtles team up to fight Shredder and Ra’s Al-Ghul. Silly, but well done, really, true to both worlds.

I am very pleased, and rather surprised, at this comic written by James Tynion IV. The number of ways (all terrible) that a story with the TMNT and Batman could go horribly wrong need not be pointed out. But this gem is truly entertaining.

The artist Freddie Williams II is also to be lauded for his artwork. It combines the funny aspects of the TMNT artstyle and combines it with a very nice, yet still dark, style that meshes well with the whole Batman arc. Had the art been mediocre then the story may well have suffered at bit. Thankfully, this is not a problem. Well done!

The TMNT have been transported to the D.C. "universe". Now they and Batman have to work against Shredder and Ras Al-Ghul to save Gotham and the Turtles. More than that I shall not spoil.

The strength of this story is that the turtles, Batman and the villains all come off as "cool" instead of "cheesy". The whole Foot Clan-League of Assassins partnership and rivalry was also well done. I enjoyed the hell out of the Batman/TMNT fight, the Damien/TMNT fight and the rest of the assorted excitement. But the Splinter-Batman match-up was truly awesome!

So is this Alan Moore's "Watchmen" or Neil Gaiman's "Sandman"? No, of course not. But it is entertaining and fun. Full of action and cool versions of some favorite characters, backed up with a good enough story and really well done art make this one hell of a comic.

You don't need to be a fan of TMNT or Batman to appreciate this. But if you are fans of either or both, then this one will bring you a great deal of enjoyment. I certainly enjoyed it and welcome its addition to my comics collection.

It’s time for a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossover which means someone’s been fucking with a portal causing the Turtles to wind up in a different universe - it happened when they crossed over with the Ghostbusters and it’s happened again with Batman! This time Shredder and the Foot have also gone through the portal and allied themselves with Gotham City’s villains - Batman and the Turtles must team-up to defeat them because that’s what they do!

James Tynion IV and Freddie Williams II’s crossover (wow, for a republic Americans are really concerned with dynastic namesakes!) is a pretty shallow read. I suppose it needs to be a bit contrived to get these two franchises together but I wish they’d just acknowledge that and get on with the story rather than spend so much time manufacturing a bullshit explanation - and there is a LOT of pointless dialogue about portals and portal technology here, all of it fictional and boring to read! Batman and the Turtles are fighting Shredder and Ra’s Al-Ghul - it’s a ninja slug-fest, have at it and leave it at that!

The story is no great shakes as a result of the tiresome portal nonsense and the ending fight is silly with a Deus Ex Machina slapped on, but the book definitely has a fair share of cool scenes to enjoy: Batman vs the Turtles, Batman and the Turtles vs Shredder and the Foot, Mikey riding the Batcave’s robot dino, Batman sharing a pizza with the Turtles, Mikey being a nuisance to Alfred around Wayne Manor, Shredder vs Batman, and the Turtles taking the Batmobile out for a joyride. So it basically delivers what fans are looking for in this crossover.

I also didn’t realise how many similarities there are between the two franchises: Damian/Raph are the temperamental teens, Shredder/Batman are visually alike, Ra’s/Shredder are roughly the same character, ditto the League of Shadows/the Foot, Alfred/Splinter are the doting older father figures or you could view Batman as the father figure and the Robins like the Turtles, and Leo/Batman are the fearless leaders.

Freddie Williams’ art looks a lot better than I’ve seen in the past - less scratchy, less noticeably digitised art. The comic looked very cool throughout and he draws both sets of characters really well. I didn’t like the Batmobile though which had a horrible insectoid face on its front!

Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is what you’d expect from a crossover between these two franchises in that it’s the sort of story you’d get if a kid dumped his toybox out and made his Batman and the Turtles toys fight. It’s amusing for a bit but nothing special.

I was expecting just a money-grabber inter-companies crossover from this comic book, instead I totally loved its storyline, artworks, pace and characters dynamics.

Almost a ☆☆☆☆☆ funny read, last two pages nearly made me cry and that alternate cover homaging Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns just made my day.

What an unexpected pleasant surprise.

A solid 4 stars.
This book is better than it has any right to be.

Yes, it's no "Watchmen", but who was expecting this to be?
And yes, the "Time Portal" premise was a bit cliché...

But it didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the series, or the nostalgic flashbacks that the run triggered.

This was so good I loved it!

So TMNT come to this universe in a fight with Shredder and then we have Batman hearing rumblings of these strange creatures and well the villains too like whatever the Foot clan is upto until he eventually discovers the turtles and after a fight with them and listening to their story and all and then coming up and llistening to their origin and making friends with them and then multiple fights with Shredder until the villain teams up with Ra's and uses the mutagen inside Arkham to transform villains there into animal-type hybrids and then well its Batman and TMNT team up to stop them (or it was later) and also Damian is there and I love his interaction with the turtles, its so fun omg I love it!

Its a blast to read through and you can feel the fun the writer and artist have on it and I like how they get to the team up quickly and there is the moment of bondness between Raf and Bruce I like and how they were ready to sacrifice going to their universe to help their new friend and that was awesome and then the big fight was cool and the artist does a great job of showing Shredder too and he menace that he is! Just insanely good stuff with so many easter eggs and there is also great moments of interaction and then the action and the promise of another great sequel!

I love Batman. I love the TMNT. This had the chance to go incredibly wrong or incredibly right. Thankfully, it went very very right.

I love the over-arching theme of family in this volume and am going to be actively searching for the next volumes. What can I say? I want more.

4, my thanks to my friend Scott for introducing me to this, stars.

I'm a big fan of Tynion , I'm a Batman fanboy , I love the turtles , I love art , I love action ... Sooo I don't know , this was like a perfect match for me .

The art work is fantastic for most pages , the only problem was the batman sketches are a bit too muscular and bloated but by the time I reached 25 pages I was accustomed to that and it was just pure bliss thereafter .

Meanwhile the book had a decent , if stereotypical plot , fantastic dialogues , and just badass moments filled till the end pages .

I also liked that they didn't go with Joker as a main baddie as frankly I'm tired of every collaboration comics picking Joker and Joker only .

Overall , If you are one of those people who like to always search for deeper meanings and dark subject matter in their comics (cough Tom King fans Cough) than you would probably hate this book . But If you love comics for their mindless action and fun stories and fun adventure reading time than this is for you my people . A perfect collaboration

It's fun to see the Dark Knight and the heroes in a half-shell join forces, and the story here was rather exciting.

However, the profanity was unnecessary, and the violence was a bit bloody at times, especially when someone's head gets blown off.

So, like many comic book omnibuses, this was a mixed bag.

This might just be one of the greatest crossovers ever.

TMNT and Shredder are stranded on Gotham after an accident involving a teleportation device. Remaining in this world will revert the turtles and Splinter to their base form. As they seek a way to get back home, they encounter Gotham's silent protector. Will he be a friend or foe?

The plot of this comic book sure isn't anything unique, but its amazing execution is what makes it a quality and entertaining read. Filled with action, humour, decent characterization and accompanied by some really great artwork, this crossover event is something that fans of either comic book won't want to miss out.

I really enjoyed this! It was fun. And funny! And creative. Completely worth reading.

Well-done with an unlikely team-up.

And the art was pretty amazing! It got the tone of the book perfectly.

And I'm going to have to get a physical copy for my son. Yeah, for my son! That's the ticket.

Recommended if you can enjoy a light Batman story.

Thanks to NetGalley and DC Comics for a copy in return for an honest review.

Just okay...it kinda jumped the shark when the Batman villains became animals. Also there seemed to be a very awkward transition between pages like it seemed to jump entirely at points.

A Totally Awesome Team-Up!

4.5 Stars

Warning: May cause pizza cravings and nostalgia for the '90s.

If you love TMNT and Batman, you are sure to find this comic a real KICK!

The panels carry a darker-hued color scheme to fit the aesthetic of a Dark Knight. Clever.

One of my favorite things about the turtles (that this comic did exceptional on) is how they are all the same species, but yet so vastly different emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. The author, illustrator, and colorist, do a GREAT job of layering the varied behaviors collectively. Even more so in the back of the book where the drawing details are shared...

I never realized the condition of the face masks the turtles wear, represent their symbolic qualities perfectly. For example, Donatello's mask has a v-shaped dip in the center pointing to the space in his teeth. Michelangelo has bigger, more rounded features to appear happier, where Raph's face mask is the most tattered, as you know he's the turtle who feels and suppresses his internal battles the most. Leo's mask is the most normal with clean lines because he's such a straightforward character. These details were fan-girl-worthy indeed. I LOVE when authors share insight into their processes. Give me ALL the deets!

I also enjoyed seeing what animals the Arkham Asylum patients turned into with the Mutagen agent. They were so fitting and creative! SPOILER AHEAD:
Mr. Freeze... a Polar Bear, hahaha!!! I laughed out loud quite a bit with this comic! I love that. Child-like fun.

Oh and btw, Casey Jones... The sweetheart, let me just say I thoroughly enjoyed seeing him lend the turtles a helping hand in this comic. He's such a hunk. —Kicks major butt, offers healing in understanding, doesn't discriminate or underestimate. I love him! I SCREAMED when he appeared in his infamous white hockey mask. Casey MF Jones ya'll!

PS. Shredder the villain, was done justice in this comic. I always wanted more from him in the movie than what they did there. Him facing Batman was RAD, even if Splinter doesn't agree with me. Haha!

Cowabunga! Count me in for Book 2!

Now, time to watch the OG, TMNT movie!

I borrowed this from my fiance's 'owned comic bookshelf'. I was under no obligation to write a review, my honest opinions are given freely.

Great fun, and written with a deft understanding of both properties. The perspective used in some of the art was a little odd, but on the whole I felt this was the next best Batman crossover after Batman v Predator that I've read.

3.5 stars. Early Tynion Batman! This was a fun story full of Batman and Turtles action that doesn’t take itself super seriously in the best way. So many major characters show up in this one. Can’t wait to read the sequels!

I did not have high expectations for this book, and ended up enjoying it very much. The plot is nothing new, characters trapped here from another dimension, etc, but the team up really works here and just makes for a fun read.
Also in the plus column for this volume is the fact that the art is very cool. The way these characters are drawn, shaded, and colored adds a depth that is missing in far too many comics I read these days.

'Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Vol. 1' by James Tynion IV with art by Freddie Williams bring us a crossover I never thought I'd see. I also thought it was a pretty good one, with art that took me back to some of the early days of the Turtles.

Batman is on the trail of some missing high end scientific equipment. Due to a portal, two very different New Yorks have been linked and Batman is about to run across some strange beings. When he first encounters the Turtles, he thinks they are at odds with his investigation. They aren't sure who he is, but he's got cool gadgets! The Turtles break into the batcave and are impressed (huge batcomputer and a giant T-Rex!). The problem is that the longer they stay in this New York, the more something bad is happening to them. Also, Shredder is in this New York and making the wrong kind of connections with Batman's foes in his bid to rule both worlds.

This was a lot of fun. Tynion makes it work by making Batman a bit lighter and making the Turtles a bit darker, neither of which feels out of character. The arty by Freddie Williams had a kind of Eastman/Laird feel to it which I really liked. I just had a silly grin on my face the whole time I read this. I really enjoyed it.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from DC Entertainment and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

I got ridiculously freaking excited when I was approved for this on NetGalley. I'm a noob when it comes to comics--I have only read a handful of graphic novels, and while I am of course just as aware as everyone else of the biggest players, I have never read any DC or Marvel comics. I did grow up watching all the Batman movies and all the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies which is one of the rare times where I didn't read the original source material first.

I'm also not team Batman. I know that is basically blasphemy, but he just doesn't do much for me. I'd gladly choose one of his villains over him, or perhaps Superman or Wonder Woman or really anybody else. He's too angsty and moody for me.

So why did I request this? Because they chose to mash up immature turtles who laugh at everything with the guy who takes everything too seriously. And it was magnificent.

The artwork is gorgeous. There were panels that I sort of wish I could print without the dialogue and then hang as prints on my wall, they were that good. Particularly anything that had all the turtles together. More than that though, the story was just really solid. It is exciting, credible, and had a cameo by basically every single major Batman villain ever. You can't go wrong with that.

And as usual, Mikey steals the show. Who wouldn't want to ride a robot dinosaur!?

Krang, one of the enemies of the TMNT (and humanity in general) desires to rule the world. Shredder and his Clan of the Foot, desire the same, so are in his way. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and their sensei Splinter, just because they fight for what is good and true and right, are in Krang's way AND in Shredder's way.

So Krang sends all his enemies into another dimension, into a city called Gotham.

To be continued...
