Rate this book

Steve Foxe and Andrea Broccardo send in the clones with the miniseries Chasm: Curse of Kaine. Ben Reilly has busted out of the Limbo prison that held him since Dark Web, and is now looking to understand his new powers. Kaine Parker is alive again after his revival during the latest Spider-Verse saga, and looking to dole out some more “brotherly” advice to the wayward Ben. Tossed into the mix is the mental manipulator of the Eternals, Druig, who believes two mentally-broken spiders will make for great playthings. Steve Foxe seems to be just a as lost as current readers, trying his best to make sense of the editorial slop left behind regarding the two Spider-Clones. The formerly violent murderer Kaine is now fully embracing the Scarlet Spider moniker, showcasing his affinity for 1990s facial scarring and haircuts, and is attempting to play at heroics. Conversely, the heroic Ben Reilly is completely loving his villain era as Chasm, rocking the 1990s blonde hair, and playing house with bad girl Hallow’s Eve. The complete role reversal for the characters just continues the mistreatment lauded upon them, muddling their stories and history beyond recognition. Even Druig, Vermin, Freak, and Mole Man are not immune to the travesty; they are backdrop cannon fodder for the Chasm experiment being played out page after page. Andrea Broccardo does a satisfactory job with the story itself, helping both protagonists look good in their current threads and making the book a visual treat. Chasm: Curse of Kaine continues to take the original Clone Saga sin and twist it further into the guts of fans.

I am an unapologetic fan of all three main characters here, Chasm, Hallows' Eve, and Scarlet Spider, so I knew I'd enjoy this no matter what, but Steve Foxe weaves a surprisingly intricate and respectful yarn, given the complicated history that the three have.

On paper, this shouldn't really work. Serial memory problem haver Ben Reilly getting his brain scrambled by Druig of the Eternals sounds like a recipe for disaster, especially when you throw in Freak (remember him?) and Vermin along for the ride, and yet this book was just plain fun. Ben and Kaine's sibling rivalry works in Foxe's favour, and Druig is deliciously villainous, even when he's on the back foot.

The artwork's solid - Andrea Broccardo does a bang-up job, even when the panels are overflowing with Vermin(s), and I think it's physically impossible to draw the Chasm suit badly, because it's just the right kind of 90s edgy to make me smile.

Some of my faves together again, under a careful writer's pen and a great artist's pencil. Lovely, more of this, please.

When you have too many spider based characters in your universe...
...(and you messed them up royally several times already)

Kaine is resurrected (thanks Spider-Verse stuff) and looking to reconnect with his 'clone brother' Ben Reilly. Little does he know just how messed up Ben has become. Reverse Robin Hood seems to be his latest thing. Did we mention the blackouts? He's been losing time lately and wrecking shop EVERYWHERE.

Who haven't we used in comics in awhile? Oh, that's right. Eternals.
Can Kaine keep Chasm from going off the rails and injuring civilians? Good luck
====
Bonus: Weird how the tables are turned. Ben Reilly used to be the hero. Kaine was a mess
Bonus Bonus: Still loathe Hallow's Eve.

Probably a textbook example of why I should dive into a series that’s already underway, or midway, whatever. I have a passing familiarity with Ben Reilly as Scarlet Spider but had no idea who Kaine or Hallow’s Eve are. This seemed like a weird post-Judgment Day appearance for Druig, and I was a bit bummed Madeline Pryor wasn’t in this more either. Art was fine, but when you aren’t really connected to the characters, it sure makes the stakes feel weak. Based on why I gleaned here, I don’t think either of these Spider-Guys is really for me.

As a fan the old Clone Saga. it's weird checking back in on Ben Reiley, who used to be a good guy with some serious pathos who is apparently now a selfish sociopath, and Kaine, who was once a dangerous sociopath but is now basically Peter Parker with an edge. Uh huh.

Oh, and the reason for the bad guy doing what he's doing is, let's be honest, dumb and boring.

This was a pretty useless and kind of stupid series.

3.5 stars - a simple tale elevated by the art and character work.

I do not like this continued massacre of Ben Reilly. Kaine, who is my favorite Scarlet Spider, was a bit better.
