This is one of the least new-reader friendly entries I've seen in a comic book.
The book features more than 20 members of the legion, each having a super hero name and a civil name. It's a lot to take in and I'm still mixing characters up left and right. Each of them have relationships, unique powers and origins. I needed about 100 pages into this book to get a feel for this. And those 100 pages were long and tedious.
I do admit that once I got comfortable with the setting, that there is some fun to be had here. There's always 2-3 hotspots in each issue, the heroes have to deal with, so the compilation of characters switches up frequently. Most of the members are in a romantic relationship so it's a healthy mix between action and soap opera.
In addition, as with most superhero teams, members switch out and the leadership changes. This is something I'm enjoying with the Avengers and it applies here as well.
The Great Darkness Saga itself is just a fraction of this book and nothing special. I'm sure the mystery of who the big bad villain is, would have been cool, if the cover of the book wouldn't spoil it completely.
I think this collection is well made and the story is good, but it requires some work to get into the flow of the narrative.
I hadn’t read this story since I devoured the individual issues, month by month, after buying them off the spinner rack 40+ years ago (I still have them). I enjoyed it just as much today, but I appreciate it more now. The quality and quantity of the the writing is far superior to anything put out by DC in the last 25 years. Though I don’t think I’d use as an introductory book to a new reader unfamiliar with this ensemble, it remains a classic story of this storied IP.
