This introductory encyclopedia to the history of art is an excellent primer: it has all your current favorites plus plenty that’ll soon become new favorites, as well. While there’s still a heavy European emphasis throughout, the editors include dozens upon dozens of artworks from Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Australia, too. In fact, of all the guides to art and textbooks I’ve read, this one does the most to be inclusive.

Each work of art includes some combination of biographical details for the artist, information about the circumstances surrounding its creation, and analysis of its importance and impact on later artists. There are plenty of great tidbits throughout, for the introductory and advanced student alike.
