SHARKS CAN BE FOUND IN THE SEA AND ON LAND
My fave is back with her debut middle grade book with Blood in the Water. Here we are following Kaylani. Its summer, its hot and sticky and Kaylani is spending her time being on the phone to her father who is imprisoned. Her mum wants her to enjoy herself and tells Kaylani she will be going to Martha’s Vineyard with family friends The Watsons. This leads to Kaylani not only having to deal with snobby sisters London and Cassie, but there is now a shocking murder, and Kaylani becomes a sleuth to try and solve the mystery.
I’m probably being bias because Tiffany can do no wrong in my eyes but as a grown ass woman I really enjoyed this book. It is perfectly written and suited for its demographic and the story flowed so naturally well too.
Kaylani as a 12-year-old seemed wiser beyond her years, but it felt believable as there are many pre teens whose frontal lobe just develops faster. I felt really sorry for her as she was missing her dad so much and those sisters were not making it any easier for her. I loved her strength, determination and personality throughout.
I also loved the Black History facts that were touched upon as well as the little life lessons Kaylani was learning along the way. I would highly encourage any middle grader who loves mystery to pick this book up!
The murder-mystery was exciting to follow, and I loved all the mini thrills and twists that popped out through the story. I genuinely did not guess who the culprit was and was taken aback.
Another banger from Ms. Jackson and I am excited for her next release!

I’ve read previous works by Tiffany D. Jackson and I’m always excited to dive into anything she writes—even if I’m older than the target age group, her storytelling never fails to hook me. With The House Before Last, she brings her signature brilliance to middle grade in a way that’s equal parts sharp, suspenseful, and heart-filled.
This gripping mystery drops Brooklyn native Kaylani into the pristine, privileged world of Martha’s Vineyard, where a summer that was supposed to offer rest and fun takes a dark and dangerous turn. A local teen dies under mysterious circumstances—was it an accident, or something far more sinister? As Kaylani searches for answers, she uncovers layers of secrets that shake everything she thought she knew about the people around her—and even herself.
Kaylani is a standout protagonist: intelligent, observant, and determined, with a fierce moral compass and an unwavering loyalty to her father, who’s incarcerated for a crime she believes he didn’t commit. OKAY TIFFANY!
First, let me start by pointing out that writing for a different target audience isn't an easy feat. I wasn't sure how I was going to feel reading it; however, this was an excellent transition for her. The story was captivating, thrilling, and wove in great social commentary as always. I'm not sure if readers will see Kaylani in future books; however, her special skills at sleuthing and solving mysteries has me aching for more installments where she stars as the main character. Though some parts of this were predictable, I'm not the target audience and I think that middle grade readers will genuinely be shocked by the twists and turns of the story. I had no doubt TDJ would thrive in the MG genre! but also wasn't expecting to be SHOOK by that twist hahaha why was this more surprising than so many adult thrillers I've read lately 😂😂😂

In Tiffany D. Jackson's Middle Grade Debut we follow 12-year old, Kaylani, a Brooklyn girl headed to Martha's Vineyard for the summer to stay with some family friends. A trip she's not exactly excited about.
The family in question, the Watsons, are extremely wealthy and powerful. In fact, Kaylani's Dad used to be close with them and worked for them, prior to his incarceration for financial crimes Kaylani is positive he didn't commit.
She doesn't have time to go to the stuffy ole' Vineyard, when all she wants to do is study the law and try to figure out a way to free her Dad.
In spite of her hesitations though, both Kaylani's parents insist she go. She needs to have fun, be a kid and let loose. She's been so worried about her Dad, and focused on his case, she's sort of put her life on hold.
Even on the ferry to the island though, Kaylani knows it's going to be a rough summer. The Watson's granddaughters, London and Cassie, are also on the ferry and London instantly makes Kaylani feel uncomfortable and judged.
In spite of this, once on the island. Kaylani does start to settle in. It's beautiful and there are lots of other kids. Maybe it won't be a completely terrible summer. Sometimes, she and London even get on a little, or at least find ways they can be mutually-beneficial to each other.
The day after the girls attend their first beach party, they're shocked to learn that one of the other kids from party, a boy named Chadwick, has been found dead.
The circumstances are mysterious, and rumors fly as to whether it was a drowning, a shark attack, or even worse, murder. Chadwick happens to be Cassie Watson's ex-boyfriend, and suspicion falls onto her.
Kaylani's innate curiosities are triggered and she's determined to get to the bottom of it. She's confident Chadwick's death was no accident, but how can she prove it?
Blood in the Water was really fun and so cute, with a great MC. Kaylani is a character you can connect to instantly. She's smart, determined, she loves her family and she's just an all-around good kid. She's someone you want to see succeed.
I love the setting on the Vineyard. I live on the neighboring island of Nantucket, and appreciated all the true-to-life details that Jackson brought to the story. It made it feel extra special for me and helped me picture everything perfectly.
I also loved having a true murder mystery where the majority of our main players were kids and teens. Kaylani getting her sleuthing on, and making friends to help along the way, was such a delight. Additionally, I loved Kaylani's relationship with both of her parents, but her Dad especially.
My only complaint was that I wish it had been like 30 to 40-pages longer. I wanted to know even more about the characters, and to get more details on Kaylani's stay on the island. Overall though, a great MG debut for Jackson.
Jackson is such a talented writer, definitely one of my all time faves and I loved seeing what she could do in this new age-range. Thank you so much to the publisher, Scholastic, for providing me with a copy to read and review!

Excellent middle grade novel.
I have long been a fan of Tiffany D. Jackson's young adult novels and was very excited to read this one. It has an engaging story sure to capture the interest of younger readers wanting a sophisticated, yet approachable mystery.
Kaylani McKinnon lives in Brooklyn and her father is in prison. She is headed to Martha's Vineyard for the summer to stay with some friends of their family. Just as Kaylani is settling in and attempting to make friends, an older teenager is found dead. Was it an accident? Shark attack? Or is something more sinister going on?
I warmed to Kaylani right away, and admired that she wanted to tell the truth and have the truth told to her. She's smart and doesn't suffer fools. I liked how the mystery is laid out within the story and how the twists helped keep the reader involved throughout. The solution to the mystery is surprising and I really liked the ending, it gave me a great feeling of satisfaction when everything came together.
Jackson's ability to communicate the nuances of class, race, and the stigma of having an incarcerated parent is brilliant, and she gives a true sense of place and setting that helps the reader to visualize what is happening in every scene. Even readers like me who have never been to Martha's Vineyard will be able to feel as if they are right there.
If you're a fan of this author, then make sure to pick this up for the tween and teen reader in your life--adults will probably enjoy this book as well. Maybe create a family book club to read and talk about this book this summer.

Tiffany is one of my favorite authors - I truly love all of her stories.. this one was decent. I believe the age group it was written for will enjoy it a lot.

"This summer, there's blood in the water...watch out for sharks!" Martha's Vineyard is a beautiful setting for any book or movie. I loved the elements of the wealthy and privileged in their luxurious mansion seamlessly integrated with the natural landscape of the beaches. The Watson's are no exception. The wealthy black family has a rich history which will soon be divulged as a murder investigation begins. Kaylani is visiting from Brooklyn with the Watson's granddaughters, Cassie and London, where they exhibit snobby and unfriendly vibes. She is shamed for her lack of money, stylish clothes and her father imprisoned for fraud, which she hopes to be able to find out more information to help with his release.
One night the three girls sneak out to a party and after a police raid, they leave the scene. The next morning they are shocked to find out Cassie's ex-boyfriend Chadwick is found dead and she was the last to be seen with him. As Kaylani investigates, money is missing and eyes are diverted from the murder to her. YA is becoming one of my favorite genres, mix it in with thriller, and I’m sold. I enjoyed this twisty story, there were definitely several moments that I did not see coming. Tiffany D. Jackson dove into the haves and the have nots, & the lengths people will go through in order to keep their secrets hidden & their prestige status. Very good read that I enjoyed & would recommend!

I know this is YA, and I'm in my late 30s... but sheesh, this was intriguing! I truly felt like this book took me on a wild ride. While it's more subtle of a go, the near ending moments and twists truly shocked me! I have always loved Tiffany D Jackson's writing style, and this was no different for me. I thoroughly enjoyed this!

I loved GROWN by Tiffany Jackson and I tend to enjoy middle grade books for a fun change of pace so this one caught my eye. I loved this story. Yes, it's for young readers, but the plot was so well done. Jackson is such a master at craftting compelling stories.
In this mystery we follow Kaylani who lives in Brooklyn with her mom and her father is incarcerated. She is headed to Martha's Vineyard to stay with family friends for summer vacation. This privileged life is very different to her from her usual life and it takes her some time to adjust. The wealthy Black families here are definitely way more pretentious than what she's used to. When a local teen winds up dead, a murder investigation starts, and Kaylani does some amateur sleuthing herself. Was this a murder, or an accident?
This was such a fantastic read. It kept me guessing with the local teen case mystery. Kaylani was such a great character. She really wanted to help out with this case. I also loved the setting of Martha's Vineyard. Such a beautiful spot and the descriptions just felt perfect for a summer thriller. I liked how the twist played out too. Tiffany D Jackson never misses. I love everything Miss Jackson writes and I have since reading Allegedly back in the day. I am not a Middle Grade reader but I really enjoyed this book and I will be recommending it to my little cousins.

Kaylaini is a 12-year-old Brooklyn girl who is spending the summer with family friends. She is dealing with some rough things in life and needs to have fun and just be a kid....then a body is found and it could be a shark attack or something more sinister.
Twelve-year-old me would have gone feral for this book. At that age I was reading R.L.Stine and Stephen King (I also read Flowers in the Attic at around that age but we won't talk about that) so this would have been right in my sweet spot.

as a born-and-bred brooklyn girl, kaylani is expecting to stick out like a sore thumb at martha’s vineyard this summer. but at her mother’s insistence that she spends time with the watsons, their family friends, and less time waiting around for her incarcerated father to call her, kaylani goes. the watsons live in oak bluffs, a town with a rich black history that instantly attracts kaylani. when a murder rocks the community to its core, kaylani sets out to solve it.
i’ve loved so many of tiffany d. jackson’s other books, so of course i had to tune in for her middle grade debut! of course, this book did not disappoint in the slightest. there was so much (pieces of black history, discussions of class differences, having an incarcerated parent, etc.) packed into under 300 pages, but tiffany d. jackson made it work. we also had the murder mystery at hand, and it was so compelling. the plot twist was done so well!
overall, this was a great MG mystery book. i’m looking forward to more books from the author!

i’ve loved so many of tiffany d. jackson’s other books, so of course i had to tune in for her middle grade debut! of course, this book did not disappoint in the slightest. there was so much (pieces of black history, discussions of class differences, having an incarcerated parent, etc.) packed into under 300 pages, but tiffany d. jackson made it work. we also had the murder mystery at hand, and it was so compelling. the plot twist was done so well!
overall, this was a great MG mystery book. i’m looking forward to more books from the author!

I automatically read anything Tiffany D Jackson writes without even needing to know anything about the book. I deeply love her characters and the fictional worlds she creates that mirror real life and I love how different each book is while still always being her voice.
I always read her new books the second I get my hands on a copy and then regret how quickly I read it bc it’s over and now I have to wait for the next one again.

I always enjoy Tiffany D. Jackson’s work, and Blood in the Water is a solid addition to the middle grade space. It gave From the Desk of Zoe Washington vibes, but with a twist—think summer thriller meets murder mystery. I loved the Martha’s Vineyard setting and the engaging cast of characters. I’ll definitely be recommending this one to middle grade readers!

For a middle grade book, this was very interesting. I enjoyed the storyline and how it mixed in the mystery with a young girl just trying to navigate life.
TDJ is one of my favorite authors and I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick read (took a couple hours) and I’d definitely suggest this for adults too.

I’ve had some hits and misses with this author but I really enjoyed this one. The main character Kaylani stood out to me. She's such a smart young girl, determined to help her father with his legal troubles while staying true to herself and not letting others sway her. I loved the Martha’s Vineyard setting, the descriptions of different places made me feel like I was there. The story itself was short and sweet. While the mystery felt a little predictable to me, I think it works perfectly for a younger audience. After enjoying this as much as I did, I definitely want to pick up more from this author!

I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to gift a copy to my niece. Every adult in this story made me furious, especially those who judged and punished her for choices that weren’t her own. It’s frustrating to see how quickly people condemn without understanding and even more upsetting that no one offered her an apology when the truth came out.
Still, the ending brought me so much joy. Watching her finally form genuine friendships and find a sense of belonging was everything. Her new friends made sure she knew she mattered, and that moment was powerful.

I was skeptical when I heard Jackson would be writing middle grade (have you read her books before?!) but she absolutely nailed this age group while still having a twist I didn’t see coming and age-appropriate mystery horror as well. I forgot to post this last week when it released, but I’m so happy this title is now out in the world! It’s rich with Black history, a stunning setting and perfect for a summer suspense read!
