Great pictures and an enjoyable read. Even though it is not a how-to book, it's a biography/bonsai portfolio of Dan Robinson, it contains some useful how-to info about collecting trees. The 50 showcased trees have not only great photographs, but also interesting written descriptions of the trees' stories. The book is no substitute for seeing Dan's trees and talking to Dan in person at Elandan Gardens, but it's nice to be able to study the trees in peace without your kids asking about when it's time to go and worrying that they might damage something in the garden.
The image gallery is exceptional. Some of the collecting I worry about the sustainability of, but ethics shouldn’t detract from the quality of the writing and the enthusiasm it generates to go find good material. Considerably better than a lot of bonsai books out there
