I’ve marvelled at how this author so successfully pulls off so many different genres … so this is my venture into ‘another’ of hers. Mafia—is there anything she can’t do?!
Written in first-person POV,
Present tense.
I did come into this series totally blind, on book 3. I enjoy the author and I was hoping it’d either read as a standalone or catch me up on the first two. My wish was granted, I didn’t feel lost. IMAGINE YOUR DAD SELLS YOU to cover a gambling debt—what?!?! Plausible for me, we don’t all get good parents. Moving on…
Friends-to-lovers.
Crime families.
Forced marriage.
Tr4ffick|ng.
Partially set in a br0th3l.
“Who did this to you?!?!!” energy.
Unplanned pregnancy.
Overall:
This got dark quickly—my kind of read, mafia or not—and the strong FMC? Made it even more satisfying. It stayed gripping for most of the book … the writing could’ve been stronger. Examples:
There was a scene where they see each other for the first time in years and of all the things to focus on, it mentions her small bag & few belongings like, 40 times. We get it, she doesn't have much—that was already shown beautifully. No need to tell it enough times that it could be a drinking game.
It’s so intense and dark and seemingly corrupt. Then all of a sudden it just … isn’t. And she’s like, ‘Cool, I forgive everything and believe everyone’s pure intentions’, (Basically without spoiling exact details. So it’s pretty hot and great for a while then just poof: underwhelming and anti-clamactic.
So it was ultimately just okay. It was so good and then it sorta dropped me. No hate, just not the strongest writing. Maybe this genre/trope isn’t the author’s best, she does a lot of different ones really well!

🎙️ Audiobook:
Both narrators were FANTASTIC and for the most part, the overall sound quality was great. There was an instance or two of a weird scraping sound, something that must’ve been missed during production. Distracting (minorly), but didn’t really take away from the experience. 4 stars.

Enjoyed the Audiobook
Gabriel was an enjoyable mafia romance with danger, tension, drama, and plenty of chemistry. I liked the Australian setting, which gave the story a different feel from some of the other mafia romances I’ve listened to.
Gabriel was a strong, protective character, and I enjoyed seeing the relationship develop despite all the complications along the way. There was enough drama and suspense to keep me interested and wanting to hear what happened next.
I especially enjoyed listening to this on audio. The voice actors did a really good job bringing the characters to life, and their narration made the story easy and enjoyable to listen to. The performances added to the emotions and helped keep me engaged throughout.
Overall, this was a fun audiobook for anyone who enjoys mafia romance, protective heroes, danger, romance, and plenty of drama.

Oh, this book and audiobook made my chest ache for Gabriel and Alba. Going from the innocent, hopeful purity of their young love, to the darkest, most unimaginable horrors of sex trafficking. Gabriel not knowing where she is for 13 long years. Allie the abuse and suffering Alba endured.
Just gut wrenching.
Then they find each other again . . . This presents a whole new set of problems, hurt hearts, anger, forgiveness, unconditional love, and a very hard won HEA.
* Who doesn’t love an Aussie accent? With Stephanie getting a louder applause for her rendition of Alba. Both narrators quickly led me into the immersive experience we all crave. Though in this case, it forced me to feel as if I lived through Alba’s traumas . . . and eventual triumphs. Jake Oakes-Ferguson and Stephanie Fazzari’s performances are both top notch—Bacio Del Cuoco.

in the beginning it was cute the way it started and then the heartbreak afterwards and everything that happened until finally they met again even though he didn't know it was her at first and then the rage that went through him and how he made the one ho hurt her pay for his mistake. they fought eachother but thn when they finally talked everything out and were able to move on together was wonderful. he knew what he wanted and made sure she knew he was still in love with her no matter what and helped her get the help she needed even though she argued against it at first. the ending was perfect.

Cassandra Doon is becoming a favorite of mine. She has a gift to write any genre from witches to dark mafia and she does it well. This one had me staying up late to finish. It tugged at my heart strings. It is dark so please read the warnings. Even though it’s part of a series, I didn’t feel like I was missing anything because I have not read the previous books.

Brilliant narration from Jake Oakes-Fergusion
The character pulled me from the start. Each has flaws, each has damage from the past. You will cry or feel the emotions for each one. Great characters, drama and a book that will have you wanting it not to finish.
