Unexpected Legacy

Rate this book
Matt Dalton’s world is spinning off its axis. Without warning, he’s thrown into the world of parenting a teenager. Matt meets his son for the first time when the sixteen-year-old is dealing with the consequences of a tragic car accident. Not only has Brady lost his best friend, he faces disability and scars both physical and emotional.

Determined to do whatever it takes to give his son a second chance, Matt looks to his alma mater to step up and help Brady regain his athletic abilities and sense of self. But sparks fly when he meets the high school principal, the captivating Kate Austen. Kate is ready to take Brady under her wing, but to her that means helping him refocus and find a new passion – using his brains rather than his brawn. Kate fully expects the younger Dalton to come with issues and challenges . . . his father may prove to be the biggest one of all.

Though the chemistry is hard to ignore, Kate fights to keep her personal feelings and professional life separate. At the same time, Matt struggles to gain his son’s trust, and Brady must face the road to recovery and find a way to accept the changes in his life.

Unexpected Legacy is a compelling story of bravery, compromise and resilience.

Books . . . chocolate . . . tea.
These are a few of my favorite things. Combine them with a sunny summer day, and perhaps a beach or pool, and call me happy!

Books have always been a part of my life, and reading has always been a favorite pastime. In my childhood bookworm days, I'd hide away for hours with Trixie Belden or Laura Ingalls Wilder. These days, I read as much as I can, making it a priority to carve out time for my latest book club read. I love curling up with a cup of tea and getting lost in a good story.

A few years ago I decided to sit down at my computer and give voice to some stories that have been rattling around in my head for a long time. That launched me into the world of fiction writing, specifically the world of romance. So far, my completed novels and works-in-progress fall into the genres of women’s fiction, contemporary romance, and mainstream with romantic elements.

My novels are about people and their relationships – what brings them together, what keeps them apart, what brings them joy or annoys the hell out of them. My intent is to bring to life interesting and ‘real’ characters that you, the reader, can relate to in real-life situations that combine a little fun, plenty of drama (with perhaps a tear or two), and big helpings of friendship, love and self-discovery, and will leave you either cheering or sighing with a satisfied smile as you turn the final page.
And just so you know . . . I like a happy ending.

This was such a sweet story. I have not read a romance story like this in a long time....meaning it was reminiscent of the stories I use to read in my younger days. The kind of story that started me on this lovely journey to discover that there are HEA's out there. Matt & Kate had an instant attraction. She had professional boundaries she felt were necessary, which kept her from embracing the attraction she felt toward him. Silly girl!! Matt is adorable and sensitive but he wants Kate. It is not easy to adhere to the boundaries especially when Matt's son is a student at Kate's school and experiences new challenges, the least of which is meeting his dad for the first time at 17 years of age. I think the best part of this story, beside the brewing romance between Matt & Kate, is watching the beautiful bond develop between Matt and his son, Brady. Matt is in unchartered territory as a new dad of a 17 year old. Especially when he has to balance that out with guiding his son through the physical and psychological healing from his accident and disability. In the end, this story represents what a family can conquer together when faced with challenging life circumstances. And, for Kate...it is possible to find a balance between career and love.

Ms. Deluca did a fantastic job in pulling me into the emotions of the characters. I felt the emotional struggles of Matt learning to be a dad. I felt the pain and fear of Brady as he struggled with the emotional and physical scars of his accident. I swear my heart was pounding on his first day of school. For Kate, I instantly connected with her passion and commitment to her job. and, I teared up while reading the scene at the cemetery. I fell in love with these characters.

I should note that if you are looking for a steamy romance, this book will probably not fulfill you but if you welcome a change of pace and are in the mood for sentimentality, this read will be worth your time.

I got really attached to the characters and had trouble putting this book down! The high school setting and discussions/issues with teens were very realistic. I'm looking forward to Darlene's next book!

Deluca has a very nice book here. As the moderator for the EiR site, it is my responsibility to check out books of every genre, even those I'm not crazy about. Romantic intrigue and women's fiction fall into a category that I usually don't read, but Deluca may have changed that.

Her book about a man facing a surprise fatherhood, a woman juggling her career, aspirations and love, and a boy forced to recreate himself is touching and well written. Deluca is very well edited, this is clearly a professionally done book with very few (if any) errors. The characters are complex and flawed, but likable despite (or because of) their honest flaws. The plot is captivating, and keeps the reader wondering what little life disaster will come next. The characters are privileged, and they know it and seem very grateful for their lives, but that does not make their problems any less significant. Indeed, they are so like the problems of so many families, that they are endearing.

The plot of the story is different and flows seamlessly the entire time. The romantic "will they" "won't they" is crafted to keep the readers interested and invested. The lose ends are tidied and the life of the characters is all future happiness just within reach. I rated it a little lower because it was too tidy for my liking, as I am a darker writer, and tend towards darker reads. But this element may make the book more enjoyable for others, those who want a very uplifting read. And it is very uplifting, joyful and enjoyable to read.

Great piece of hopeful literature, good for 17+, but best for adult women. There are hints of sexuality, but it is a clean and not over the top, thank goodness! Very good book from author Darlene Deluca who did the unlikely and made me enjoy a romance-heavy, women's fiction.

Imagine finding out you have a 16 year old son from a one night stand when you were still in high school. Add to that, his mother left him with his grandparents when he was 5. You find out about him because he was in a horrible accident that leaves him handicapped and scarred and his grandparents can no longer take care of him due to health issues. Add some love interest and you have one interesting story.

This is also a romance novel, a second plot expertly woven throughout the story. Kate is drawn to Matt, although she fights it because she is the new principal of Brady's school. She doesn't want to be accuse of anything immoral or showing favoritism. Chance meetings and issues with Brady at school keep bringing them together. Adding more interest to the story.

This was a great story that I couldn't seem to put down.

Let me start off by saying that I don't read romance novels. I learned that the author is from my area, so I read it to give a 'local' a try. I honestly wasn't expecting to like it much, but I have to say I really, really liked it!
The characters are well-drawn, the dialogue was realistic and the story unfolds with a pleasant pace. I loved Kate! You wouldn't expect that an educated, successful, beautiful woman would have the little crises of confidence and self-doubts that Kate does, but I know for a fact that they do! I suppose that's what made Kate feel so 'real' to me.
I will definitely read Ms. Deluca's other books.

A nice, sweet story of how a father and son begin their life together after years of not knowing each other existed. A father who has always lead a life of a rich bachelor and a son who just lost a part of himself are brought together to face a new life as they awkwardly start accepting that they have each other now. I have to say that I am not used to this kind of stories. I usually see these kind of plots in movies or in dramas but they were never my choice of flavor when it comes to reading. Surprisingly, this book was better than what I expected. Unexpected Legacy’s simplicity was what made this book good and not hard to like.

Imagine life suddenly slaps you with a teenager child you never knew you had? This was what opened the story, life handing Matt Dalton the surprise of his life, Brady. His son who just got out of an accident that cost him his legs. It was like conflict after conflict with Matt’s life, but he was lucky with this supportive family. With the help of his whole family, bonding and creating a relationship with his son was made easier. It was understandable since he never got a warning that he was becoming a father in just a snap.(Well most fathers have a grace period of 9months)

Matt was actually a likeable character. He didn’t showed hesitation in caring for his son even though he was very shocked to find out about him. He was man enough to take responsibility and jump right into fatherhood despite the surprise and the bumps he might face. His life literally changed overnight and the way his character evolved from an awkward father to ignorant father to a loving proud father was really touching. I could say even if Brady has lost a lot in his life before meeting his dad, he sure did hit jackpot when he got together with him finally. Brady’s reunion with his dad was not a smooth sailing one, which was expected. You can’t just force yourself to suddenly embrace people you had no clue existed. Added to that is the fact that you just got out of an accident that had cost him his leg and scars that would surely haunt him for the rest of his life.

Matt has a lady in the story in the character of Brady’s new principal, Kate Austen, and I am glad the story didn’t focused on this two solely. Rather, it just added more love to the story.

Kate Austen is the newly appointed head principal at Linden High. She’s very driven and hardworking that sometimes she lets her work consume most of her time, and she is very single. She’s never the type to mix love and career and if ever it comes to that she would always choose career, but that decision had become messed up when she met Brady’s dad. What are the odds that the only man she’s been attracted to after a long while would be a student’s dad. Sure, the school does not prohibit such kind of relationships, but for her it was a big no-no. Despite from her obsessing about work ethics and how people will see her, I like how she played a big part in Matt and Brady’s life. She became their mediator, their referee, and the person who almost stood as a motherly figure to Brady. For a single parent like Matt, it was handy to know someone Kate because as an outsider and as someone who has worked in an academe, her knowledge with kids became useful.

Kate turning down Matt at first was understandable despite the obvious fact that she was also very much attracted to Matt. She didn’t just jump into a relationship for her sake. She considered her career, Matt’s feelings, and most especially, Brady’s opinion too before thinking of herself which I think was a very thoughtful thing to do. She also considered Brady’s mom and what her existence might cause in their relationship, and how she managed to face this conflict was really good too.

The story might have been a simple one but it was a very good read. I like how it portrayed love in so many different ways, between father and son, a man and a woman, and love among family members. It was so touching, had relatable characters and was very hard to put down. This book will surely entertain you and leave you smiling because of how it showed love in all angles.

Netgalley gave me this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

Unexpected Legacy by Darlene Deluca

Matt Dalton thought that he had everything figured out until he was told that he not only had a teenage son that he had fathered when he was a teenager, but that his son had been in a horrible car accident. Matt didn't know what to expect when he took his son in to live with him so he could have the best possible education and the chance to start over, but he wasn't upset when he met Kate Austen (who I think has the same name as a character on Lost). However, no matter what he does, Kate doesn't want to be more than friends. Matt however is determined to find a way into her heart.

For some reason this book was in the YA part of the Netgalley section which is why I requested it. It shouldn't have been there since even though Brady does have a few PoVs, it is anything but YA. However, I don't mind that I requested it. I found it to be a nice change from what I usually read. It kind of reminded me of the romance novels I read a lot of when I was in college.

The romance in this novel is very sweet. Even though it is probably the main plot of the novel, Matt's main focus is his son. Even though he has just become a father he is determined to be a good one and that I liked about him. I also liked Kate but not quite as much at Matt. She was very determined to do whatever it took to keep her position in the school and she was worried that she might do something to ruin it. The minor characters of this novel also seemed very real and were compelling.

I didn't see any grammar mistakes and everything seemed to flow nicely. It was a very fun book that was hard to put down. I don't usually read as much on my days off but I couldn't help but read this book late into the night. I wanted to know what was going to happen.

Overall I would give this book four out of five.

My Review: This book was an unexpected surprise. I expected it to be... boring. To be just another book. And then I started reading it. It sucked me in from the beginning. It was an adventure just to read the book. The characters were so lifelike. They had real emotions. I could connect with them and go through what they went through. And then the story kind of lost me. I was liking the beginning, when Matt is meeting Brady, when the family is getting to know him, and he's getting better. As soon as he started going back to school there was just so much going on at once. It lost me. And then the end, when he's... well. you would know if you read it. It sucked me back in and helped me finish the book. Overall it was great. A fun read. Definitely check it out if you have the chance to.

The first half of this book was what I would imagine a PG13 version of 50 Shades of Gray would be like. The two adult characters where continually describing how amazingly attractive the other was. That being said, I was really surprised to find that I liked this book. This was so different from what I normally read, that I got really into the plot. I finished it in two days, and Im still confused why I liked it, but I did.

Lovely, believable story about interesting adults and a teen who are trying to become a family, despite injury, career demands, and unexpected events. I read this at a time when I especially needed a good story about good people, and really enjoyed settling in and seeing how their story turned out. Well written and perceptive about what makes people 'tick' - and about how we learn to love.

Cute, fun, and very quick read. It centers around a teen, Brady, who has just been in a tragic car accident. After the accident is when Matt, Brady's father, finds out about him. Brady's mom took off when he was about 4 or 5 and has been being raised by his grandparents. They can no longer care for him and so they contact Matt. You can imagine Matt's shock at finding out he has a 16 year old son! Then there's Kate, she's interim principal at Western High School and uber-dedicated to her job. Obviously, she's vying for it to be permanent and she absolutely can't let anything jeopardize that. Matt decided Western is the best place for Brady once he gets out of the hospital and so ha makes an appointment with the principal. That's when he gets his second shock. The principal is the woman he met a few weeks ago when he and his father were getting lunch. The woman he'd really like to get to know better. As much as Kate may like to get to know Matt she absolutely can't date a student's father, even if it's not really against the rules. I sometimes felt that Kate took things a bit too far in her paranoia.

There are several issues addressed in this book. How does a young, healthy athlete deal with suddenly being disabled? How does a school community deal with the tragic death of one of their star students and her mother? How will they deal when they find out all the circumstances of the accident? How does a young man deal with being abandoned by his mother and then suddenly turned over to a stranger (even if that stranger is his father)? There are other questions that must be addressed and pretty much all of them are. There's no drawn out drama and everything is handled pretty much as adults should. That's really sort of refreshing. All in all, this is worth a look if you're looking for a book you can get through in a few hours and feel good when you're done.

My Thoughts:
-I really appreciated that there was more to this than romance
-I liked seeing the father/son relationship develop
-The 'twist' at the end was pretty predictable and didn't really need to be there
-I'm getting really tired off heroines making unfair judgements about heroes based on their own prejudices and that being a reason the couple aren't together
-I felt like the whole car accident/amputation storyline was original
-All in all was good but could've been great

Good, uplifting book with the ability to overcome my dislike for romantic heavy books, and keep me interested. Deluca is professionally edited and paced, and her story is endearing and enjoyable. Not excessively flowers and roses or over the top love-making scenes (thank God). Just interesting, honest dialogue and characters. Good job, Deluca!
