Gosho Aoyama (青山剛昌) is a Japanese manga artist. He is best known as the creator of the manga series Detective Conan (known in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom as Case Closed).
Aoyama made his debut as a manga artist with the work Chotto Matte which was published in the weekly magazine Shōnen Sunday on winter of 1987. Shortly after that, another work by Aoyama, Magic Kaito, was published on the same magazine.
Lots of great moments in this one: a resolution to the Santos saga, a locked-room murder coupled with tension between Richard and Eva, a fun ending to a Kaito Kid encounter, and a glorious, Rachel-administered beatdown. It's also always so good to see the Junior Detective League shine!
This volume could have been solid if it weren't for the ridiculous details and unrealistic resolutions scattered throughout. The Kaito Kid case, in particular, was a disappointment. While I usually enjoy the dynamic between Kudo/Conan and Kaito Kid, this one fell flat. It lacked the cleverness I expect from their interactions. I really hope future Kaito Kid arcs bring more satisfying resolutions and avoid the nonsensical elements.
As for Ran, this volume didn’t do her character justice. Seeing her adjust herself to fit Kudo's "ideal girl" was a letdown—it felt out of character for someone as strong and independent as Ran. I’m hoping for a return to form in the next volume, with more depth in both plot and character.
This volume wraps up the story revolving around the police romance/case and ends in a nice way. The next story involves Rachel Moore trying to get her estranged father and mother together and on her mother’s birthday. What goes as a pretty lousy day ends even worse when Ms. Kokubu (who was staying with Rachel’s mom) is found dead! This story while a murder still has a sappy good side to it which made it a great tale to read. The next case involves the Junior Detectives, and it pits them in their greatest challenge yet…solving a case without the assistance of Detective Conan!!!! On top of that it appears that the Kaito Kidd is involved in this case as well. The next story has to deal with a theft, monkeys, and murder. (I think that would have been a good name for this story, ha ha) This story closes out the book and has a very satisfying ending.
Some nice entries in the Detective Conan stories, including a story of Mori and his wife, whom he can't seem to do a nice thing for (without messing it up pretty bad). Also the conclusion of the Ms Kobayashi and Santos story - can the catch the killer before the killer can silence Ms. Kobayashi? Plus another Kaito Kid story, which is always fun. Also, Sonoko and Ran (and Conan, of course) try to catch a serial purse snatcher, but all the suspects have a solid alibi for some of the incidents.
This was barely scraping three stars, the only saving point was the Kaito Kid story wedged in between horrible misromances. That one was interesting and had several funny points.
General Synopsis: As mentioned above, I am going to write a proper review for this soon, but I have a few books ahead of this one in the queue, so I cannot stop reading DC NOW! That's sacrilege. I have decided to read all the chapters available up to now (we are almost to 1000!) As you can see, I am totally fangirling over here and I don't care, because this is one of my favorite manga series, ever! But all of this aside, there are a few things I wanted to list so I don't need to go back and look everything up when I do finally sit down and write my fangirl review. ✌🏻
DO NOT click on the spoiler link if you don't want to read all the cases in this volume, because it will ruin it for you. On the other hand, if you're a fan like me or are looking for a certain case (and please note, these are how I have set the cases), etc. click away, that's why it's there.
Another spoiler link, so don't click if you don't want to ruin this manga. I am going to include the characters introduced or as the series continues are in this volume. Personally, I think us DC fans love certain characters more than other (yes, Heiji, I mean you!), so sometimes when we are re-reading this series (like all the time!) you might wish to start at a specific case or start when a certain character is involved.
Characters in this volume:
Personal Opinion: #1, I never call this CASE CLOSED. If you do, you're not a true fan of this series, so don't even bother reading my review or my personal opinions. I'm sorry if I offend you, but you offended me first by telling me you want to read CASE CLOSED or you just love Jimmy.
#2, as you can tell by #1, I read this online. I would never waste my money buying a manga series in english that cannot get the name correct and mess up the main characters to make it appear more "ENGLISH." I am so happy I don't run a blog and this isn't a review on Sailor Moon, #1, because I have a huge soap box tirade against DiC. I also don't think there is anything against reading something online. Comics, which is what manga are, are meant to be read and shared and sometimes paying over $10 is too much in my opinion. Plus, I read the newest chapters as soon as they are released from Japan, because I would never miss a release of DC. So this is my personal shout out to you translators from me, Thank You!
SHADOWED SECRETS AT THE SUMMER FESTIVAL During a summer festival's fireworks display, Miss Kobayashi becomes an unexpected witness to a chilling murder. After overhearing a heated argument, she stumbles upon a dying victim and sees a shadowy figure fleeing the scene. Despite Kobayashi’s detailed description of a woman with long hair and a large figure, none of the three suspects match her account. Conan faces the challenge of unraveling the truth hidden beneath conflicting evidence and misleading appearances.
THE DEADLY GIFT AT THE LUXURY HOTEL Ran’s attempt to rekindle her parents’ relationship with a luxury hotel trip takes a dark turn when Eri’s client is found murdered in her hotel room. Conan pieces together a complex scenario involving hidden motives and clever misdirection. Bloodstains suggest that the body was hidden beneath the bed, and the killer exploited Eri’s brief absence to escape unnoticed. With the suspects including a stalker, his overprotective mother, and a troubled husband, Conan must untangle a web of jealousy and betrayal to uncover the murderer.
THE ROOSTER MAN’S CRYPTIC CLUE A festive atmosphere at the Rooster Festival is shattered when Sonoko is robbed by the elusive Rooster Man. The case escalates when a stabbing victim identifies the attacker with his dying breath, leaving Conan with a puzzling clue: “not rooster, but saru” and a gesture showing nine fingers. Conan must decipher the hidden meaning behind the cryptic message and track down the masked thief before another victim falls prey to the Rooster Man’s sinister game.
(polos) sonoko: ah, biasa saja~ (senang) kogoro: aku kan, memang hebat!
