Whilst it's not the best event DC has to offer (it's not even Taylor's best event), Beast World is still an extremely fun ride. Naturally, there are world altering stakes at hand, but it's the centring on Beast Boy that differentiates this from just another intergalactic threat to best. It's a very personal fight, especially for the Titans, and the connection between the core members gets to shine amongst the entertaining action. Full of this is why I love comics moments that you expect from stories of this scale, the main narrative is absolutely worth your time.
One of the better comicbook ‘events’… It was almost good enough for me to take the quote marks off the word events. Almost.
If you stick to the core book and the two issues of The Titans that tie directly into the story you have a pretty great tale of global peril, brought on by an alien invasion and made worse by a shady government agency, and extreme acts of heroism and sacrifice.
Also, there’s a real sense of genuine change to the DC Universe spinning out of this story, rather than the usual sense of everything being back to normal again by the time it all wraps up.
I am really impressed. This is a great crossover book important to the DC universe, but it is also great for the Titans series itself. Great story, artwork, and lot of action.
The Titans have to face their first crisis event since they officially took over from the Justice League. Brother Eternity makes his move. What is his master plan? Who is he really, and what is his connection to a certain Titan? What other forces are at work behind the Titans and the world?
It's a great book, not just its own epic story, but has huge ramifications throughout the DC universe and the Titans. All the Titans have a chance to shine, slightly more character development for some characters over others, but there are big things to come and lots of time in this series. The book finishes with characters' design sketches.
I read this in one sitting, unable to put it down. It's a wonderful showcase for where the Titans are now and has so much character interaction and legit threat... Everyone turning into animals could be hokey but at least here it was handled like a threat and the ever evolving solutions were brilliant writing on Tom Taylor's part. Maybe I need to jump back into TITANS.
A spectacular premise with beautiful and cinematic art by Ivan Reis. The Titan's first global threat and it was epic. But what makes it all the more entertaining is watching Waller make here play.
Best DC Crossover in a while! AND a chance for Beast Boy to shine like never before! Highlights: - Brother Eternity sends astronauts to the moon of Titan under the guise of exploration, but is really using them to wake an ancient God known as the Necrostar. - Starro is the only being to ever defeat and imprison the Necrostar, and he is missing, so Gar comes up with the idea to convert himself into a Beast Starro, which stretches his abilities further than they ever have been. - He is able to defeat the Necrostar, but it over taxed him and he begins to lose it, sending out spores of himself, much like Starro, as a conqueror, would. These spores target superpowered beings and change them into a sort of Beast version. - Taking over the Hall of Justice and renaming it the Hall of Order, Amanda Waller is given power to enable the Bureau of Sovereignty, which she uses to turn against the Titans, with the help of Doctor Hate and Peacemaker. Using a weapon of a man that creates black holes, Waller gets the core being of Beast Boy Starro destroyed. - Nightwing and Raven go to speak with Waller, to stop her from killing all the beastpeople in the world. Their efforts are hindered by Doctor Hate, who reveals themselves as a dark version of Raven - Brother Eternity is revealed as Xand'r, Starfire's brother, who seeks to restore the Necrostar from where Beast Boy sent it, but she stops him. - While battling the Beast Starro spores, Raven realizes that each one that they destroy is a piece of Gar. They stop destroying and start gathering and Gar is eventually restored, though weakened and missing memories. - We end with finding out that Doctor Hate is posing as Raven, having imprisoned our Raven in the gem, AND Waller is pissed off, wanting more power than ever (when did she become the power hungry bitch of the DCU, and why?)
Overall, a great story. Excellent pacing and fantastic art. Definitely should be checking this one out.
Firmly in the "above average" category as far as DC event series go. For one: it's honestly quite coherent. Events in the Titans series have led to the Necrostar awakening from one of Saturn's moons (okay, yeah, that part is weird). The Titans team up with the Justice League to battle this space monster. Over the course of the first issue (a lot happens in the first issue), it becomes clear that only Beast Boy can battle the Necrostar.
I won't reveal just how he defeats the Necrostar, but suffice it to say that Beast Boy's actions are actually what kicks off Beast World. The rest of the mini-series sees the Titans running around the world, trying to clean up Beast Boy's mess, while also fending off Amanda Waller and her government goons, who are eager to put a clean end to Beast Boy (and all superheroes for that matter). (Real shades of Trump in her actions, sigh.)
I think the focus on the Titans (and Tom Taylor at the helm) keeps Beast World a bit more grounded than the cosmic Crisis events. It's still a big, world-ending deal, but there are a nice number of character moments scattered throughout the book to remind you that these people are more than just their sweet superpowers.
As with almost all event series (looking at you, Knight Terrors), the art is universally gorgeous. The conclusion to Beast World has some interesting ramifications, mostly for Waller and Raven, though many of the toys are put back in the box.
With the Justice League disbanded, the Titans are the world’s premier superhero team, and thus deserve a proper big event book! And Tom Taylor delivers here with Beast World.
After attempting to defend the Earth from a super Star Conqueror, Beast Boy gets corrupted as a Starro and his spores invade the Earth, turning everyone exposed to them into rampaging animal monsters.
Tom Taylor’s writing here is familiar and very reminiscent of his work on DCeased and it’s exciting to see him flex his muscles on a main universe event like this. But you can tell that the writer would have gone even further if his hands weren’t tied by being in main continuity. I had hesitations about this but it turned out to be an entertaining event that showcased the Titans’ work as a team and it further sets the stage for Amanda Waller’s plans for the DC universe!
Tom Taylor offers an inventive and sustainable premise for this event. The action is solid throughout, and I was invested in what happened each step of the way. The story didn't blow me away, but it kept me turning pages with anticipation. I'm not sure how much of a crossover it is since every issue is Titans-branded. Yet it does seem to help build up the Absolute Power event that is on the horizon. All in all, I strongly recommend it to folks familiar with the characters or recent DC continuity.
A terrific event with outstanding art and colours. Clever plot machinations, epic scope, and plenty of heart - Tom Taylor and the team have done it again.
4.5. This a great read. Aside from the inherent comic book goofiness of super heroes vs furries you get a strong event full of action. It really sells Amanda Waller's hand in using this sow distrust of superheroes. It makes all the action have that little seed of knowing how afterwards how had this is all gonna look (and writes that in well too). Having concepts that are full to the brim with creativity seems to be the name of the game with Dawn of DC events such as Lazarus Planet giving new powers, Knight Terrors showing a bunch of Nightmares and now the oodles of unique human-animal hybrids in Beast World. I'm glad they do connect it to the Titans trade with Brother Blood / Brother Eternity but its not so integral that its necessary to read as well as the Titans issues within (love the Starfire focus). At the end they tie it as well into the Titans ongoing which has me stoked to see how demon!Raven is going to play out. For Beast World proper the main artists are a flipflop of Ivan Reis (1,2, 5) and Lucas Meyer (3, 4, 6). Both are great. Ivan Reis does amazing detailed art and rendering for the animals and various textures on them. Lucas Meyer doesn't do comic realism like Ivan Reis. Instead its that comic cartoon semi-realism. Meyer really uses that style to do more with expressions and I appreciate it (though the inkers play a heavy role in its appeal to me).

Read this & World Tour concurrently but didn't keep separate notes, so this review is for the Beast World event as a whole.
First off, what happened to Jarro? We're keeping Penguin's kids running Iceburg now as canon, but when a world conquering starfish is needed, Gar has to do it? Also, since when could Comic Book Beast Boy transform into animals not of earth? For that matter, when did he regain full control over his powers? That was a major plot point right before this event in the Dawn of DC Titans series.
So glad Starfire, Donna, and Powergirl are back in the mix. And a Martian Manhunter sighting?!?? When did he get revived? (Seriously, J'onn & Luthor both died by the same enemy whose defeat rearranged the multiverse. Why do they get to be reborn but not Jarro...in a story featuring Starro?). Semi-relatedly, when did Beast Boy get the Eye Deathstroke shot out back? That happened after Death Metal.
Really liked Apex Ava. As well as Doctor Hate (that twist!). Glad Jon & Damian are still BFFs but if you didn't spend the 2nd half of Rebirth reading their 2.5 team up series, the friendship between 'still a child Damian' and 'aged up in space YA Superman Jr' in this comes off a little weird.
Waller is one DCs best Villains & one reason for that is that she's realistic while not feeling out of place in a superhero fantasy. So I question the wisdom of using the most unrealistic plotline possible (oh, no! Half of errbody is now an animal-person) to set up a realistic villain as the BBEGal (especially because she didn't need much help in the first place).
I get this whole thing is just meant to set up the next event (Absolute Power), AND triggering a worldwide catastrophe to facilitate a power grab is totally Waller, BUT there's other baddies the 'Beast World MO as part of greater evil machinations' would fit with much better. Maxwell Lord (who could more easily mind control primal-ed heroes). Or Cheetah with leftover Perpetua god-power. Ocean Master (turning land dwellers into beasts so they tear each other apart is SO evil Atlantean). Or Dr. Hugo Strange (who's known for making hybrid monsters); and there hasn't been a good evil avatar of The Red since New 52 Swamp Thing/Earth 2 Society.
The second half of the story has some pretty series allegory for a Big 2 LineWide event, but it's also full of plotholes...Light Spoilers to follow...
Why do the Titans not try magic to solve any of this? (Not least of all because, aren't Beast Boy's powers technically magic based?) I mean, Zatanna could remove the spores, from a distance, with a few magic words. Dr. Fate could work any number of magics that would stop the crisis in its tracks in multiple ways. Just off the top of my head, he could gather or generate enough power to attract the spores out of regular people without putting the heavy hitter heroes at risk. (Shoot, pretty sure Cyborg or Mr. Terrific, or Mr. Miracle's motherbox, or Dr. Light or Atomic Skull, or even a GL Lantern...could have done the same thing with their tech/powers). AND you're telling me Kent &/or Khalid weren't sent by the Lords of Order the minute Dr. Hate woke the necrostar?). OR combine Vixen/Animal Man/Buwaga Beast with spellcaster, Martian, or Cyborg tech and take control of and calm all animal-people?
Point being, there's dozen of ways Nightwing's plan could have been carried out with little risk to the "League's" big guns/Before Waller could fully carry out her plan. The writers going out of their way to let Waller succeed to such an extent that, especially when coupled with metalogical animal people, it's impossible to suspend disbelief enough to get lost in the admittedly action-packed plot & storylines.
P.S. I know I read Infinite Frontier, but I remember none of the status quo changes mentioned within this review. But I also don't really remember specific deets about that Special, so I could just be misremembering, I guess
Main Points: Taylor makes an extremely fun, but imperfect, crossover for the Titans that is held up by great character moments, personal stakes with Beast Boy and a damn good villain in Amanda Waller.
Extended Thoughts (Spoilers Below): Big DC/Marvel comic book crossover events are a massive gamble that don’t usually hit the mark for me. They have a tendency to be overly convoluted, focus on spectacle over character and rely on shock value or “dark” twists.
With that being said, I’m happy to report that “Beast World” is actually a lot of fun. It ultimately acts as the second act to Taylor’s Titans and the big event of the run. What makes this book work really comes down to a few things — the Titans having to take charge for the first time, the stakes for saving Beast Boy, and… Amanda *fucking* Waller.
The Titans feel desperate not only to show the world that they can be its protectors, but also to save their friend. It makes the stakes feel more personal than just “let’s save the day again!” It leads to great moments like Dick having to promise a mutated Batman he won’t let him hurt anyone, Wally giving Jon Kent, who’s breaking down mid-crisis, a pep talk on speed, and the Titans having to decide to protect Beast Boy from the U.S. government at the potential cost of more lives.
The real MVP of the story is Amanda Waller as the villain. Her character provides great commentary on the distribution of power in government and the usage of fear for political gain and order. However, she acts as a great antagonist to the Titans due her personal history in the Universe, her style of leading being opposite to Nightwing and her cold, calculating nature which feels like it could be found in a real military official.
The story isn’t perfect. The book ends lacking a bit of consequence, especially on Beast Boy, the Brother Eternity connection to Starfire feels forced, unearned and underdeveloped and the dark Raven/Doctor Hate twist feels like something the Titans have explored in the past.
However, it’s hard to deny that Taylor knows what works for the Titans. With the help of artists like the legendary Ivan Reis, Taylor uses great character moments, the Titans’ history and chemistry and the weight of responsibility to create an event worth reading if you love the team.
This was an alright one and done event, one time read also. The opening issue is great with the threat of Necrostar and how Beast boy turns into Starro and defeats the villain and the premise sounds cool with people turning into animals and all and hence the title but the event fails to capitalize on the idea and just when it feels there are consequences, the villains get defeated fast and there should have been a big death of a titan but idk why they didn't go for it, it would have been more devastating though the ending is cool with Dark raven and the reveal was expected, and I think that character has a lot of potential and it will be interesting to see where Waller goes from here.. she has stepped up big time as a villain for the entire DCU now.
I like some transformations of heroes and some moments like with Dick and Bruce and how he rescues him and its fun to see Titans stepping up and Dick having a central role like this, first with Dark crisis and now this so thats pretty coo ngl, and yeah if you read the tie in to the main Titans book he turns into a fox lol and in his solo book he saves Damian and so yeah he has a central focus overall.
I felt like there was way too many deus-ex-machine and shortcuts to revert to the status quo before the event started, and its kind of a catch-22 situation because I would rather have an event with extreme consequences by the end like I said and it would have made for more of an emotional read with the death of the titan like I mentioned but maybe the writer wanted to end it with optimism and heroes stepping up and people helping people.. but then again its on the reader how you interpret the story and think of it by the end.
So overall, nice one time read and contained and there are tie-ins, if you want to read them go for it, else you can just read this event and it will be fine, and you will have a fun time and I have to say the art was freaking gorgeous here!

“Do you really want all life on earth dependent on the Titans and Nightwing?”
A conqueror imprisoned in space by ancient Tameraneans is released by astronauts and begins hurtling through space towards earth. The Titans are able to call forth Earth’s mightiest heroes quick enough to come up with a solution: only a conqueror can defeat a conqueror. Beast Boy (Gar) transforms in to the conqueror Jarro (Garro), and with Cyborg’s help is able to trap the raging conqueror in a freezing galaxy lightyears away. Unfortunately, Dr. Hate interrupts Beast Boy and Cyborg’s return to earth under Amanda Waller’s orders. Dr. Hate separates Gar’s mind from his Beast form, and Beast-Boy-As-Garro turns on earth, infecting civilians and heroes alike with spores that transform them into mindless beasts. Earth’s remaining heroes must protect the human race from losing their minds and becoming beasital, and protect Beast Boy from Waller’s power grab.
I love seeing an All-In event with the Titans in charge and Nightwing at the helm. The Titans are truly a more cohesive and communicative team when compared to the JLA, and this aspect goes back to their very beginning. Teams formed on trust, friendship, and mutual respect. The decision for Beast Boy to take the form of a conqueror is his own, and his protection from Waller is one they all agree on. I also like how the responsibilities of the crisis are divided up. The heavy hitters like Donna and Kory are fighting beastial heroes or subduing spores. The more intellectual members are working on next steps and back up plans. Nightwing, as the leader, is coordinating with world leaders, threatening Amanda Waller, and calling the shots while staying away from the main lines where, as a true human, he will not be of much help.
This event feels better suited to this new age of DC, post Crisis on Infinite Earths where the next generation of heroes is leading the charge.
Tom Taylor's Titans team (say that ten times fast) take centre stage for an event, as a terrible alien threatens the world, only for Beast Boy to make things ten times worse in the process of saving it.
I'm glad the Titans got this opportunity in between big Justice League stories. It really shows how far all of the characters have come, and it makes them feel like Titans and not just Teen Titans Pretending. The plot's pretty clever, and leads to some fun developments for characters both in the main book and in the tie-ins, as well as moving DC's current status quo forward with Amanda Waller and Doctor Hate showing up to menace everyone.
The stakes are suitably high without being multiversal level (we've had enough of that for a while), and while we do get a generic 'character dies and is back before the end of the event' type plot, it does work, and it feels appropriate given the character involved.
The artwork's superb of course, as Ivan Reis handles the opening and closing while Lucas Meyer hits up the middle - he's basically Reis-lite, and impressed me on his other Titans book most recently, so I'm glad to see him here. It's a shame Reis couldn't draw the whole thing, but it's not a bad substitution.
Beast World's no line-wide shake-up must-read type book, but it's got good character work, nice art, and a different kind of story to what we've been getting recently, so it's worth checking out for the change of pace more than anything else.
While DC's most recent company wide events have not been outstanding, I will give them credit for two things.
They aren't making them go on forever (I mean I like Jonathan Hickman's world building and execution on the X-Men books, but the conclusion and inevitable reset feel like it is taking forever).
They are trying to have one important point at a minimum carry over into the general DCU that will have some effect. How long before the next inevitable reset, I don't know.
SPOILERS
Whereas in Lazarus Planet the big effect related to magic in the DCU, here it is the status of heroes.
Despite saving the Titans saving the world, and after defeating a large interstellar menace, Amanda Waller uses events to essentially make the human populace fear all heroes, and is trying to take steps towards an outright ban on all superhumans. Unlike the old Suicide Squad days this Waller isn't so much concerned with the better good but consolidating their own power base. This also builds off of some of the events in the Nightmare/Lazarus Planet stories.
There is deus ex machina regarding Beast Boy, and the writers will be challenged to make Raven work going forward.
The Justice League is gone and things are changing in the DCU...
Who do you call on to prevent the latest Crisis? Titans! They've been given the ball and not everybody is happy about it.
(insert Amanda Waller plan #9953268 to convince the world that superheroes are BAD NEWS)
Beast Boy supersizes himself into a Gar colored Starro, but gets his consciousness wiped from the beast form. Uhoh! Looks like the big, green 'Garro' can still send out mini Garros that morph their victims into animal/human hybrids. YADDA YADDA YADDA...(lots of odd animal mutations later) Waller calls her shot and one-shots Garro with Chunk (from the Wally West as Flash, years). If that wasn't already EVIL, she then broadcasts to everyone that there's no hope of bringing morphed people back and they all must be killed...for God and country. (RIP 1 million people).
Heroes find a way. They save the day. Beast Boy..Changeling...Gar is back! (but now we have to contend with the dark side of Raven still on the loose)
This was a fantastic run for the Titans, especially after the abysmal first 5 issues. This is everything that a Titans-led crisis event should be. It doesn't mean the event is perfect, but it has been fun. The promotional aspect of the event was dismal. Not once, even though the Titans are primed to be the new main hero team, not once do they push this team to be the big dawgs. The event came and went without any real push from DC. As for the main storyline itself, the Doctor Hate twist was stupid and Gar came back in the end too quickly. Past these specific annoyances, the story is worth a read and deserves more promotion from the parent company. Grade: B+
Tom Taylor comes through again with another tight and tidy Titans tale. The guy makes this stuff look effortless, making expert use of secondary characters while never letting the action flag. I’ve said it before, Taylor is the current champ of comics writing. Other writers should study how he does it.
I especially enjoy how he takes the powers of superheroes and finds previously unexplored aspects to exploit for his stories. That is particularly impressive given that these characters were created anywhere from 25 to 70 years ago. One would think every possible permutation would be explored by now. Yet he finds neat little ways to give us slight twists.
Not a bad event. The first issue felt really rushed and chaotic, but in context Taylor probably did have to stuff that much into a single issue. This is a very Titans centric event, despite the big implications to the world throughout. That means sidelining some of the usual Justice Leaguers, though it generally makes narrative sense. Making Waller the big bad feels like a big choice, but I guess I haven't been keeping up with her enough to know if this is a huge swing or part of a gradual character shift.
For the most part, a good Titans story that feels very near to being a Wolfman classic.
The front part, where everyone is being turned into animals drags (not helped by the fact that it was supported by a big crossover that belabored this idea even more).
But the back two thirds, first revealing Brother Eternity and then engaging in machinations against Waller are all terrific. There are real repercussions and there's real fear for the future. (That's what makes this Wolfman-like.)
It's also great seeing Babs working with the Titans; she really needs to become a member.
This is really fun. Fewer moments of introspection or dialogue, but the whole thing reads like a blockbuster (the film not the villain). Very cool thought given to the mechanics of Beast Boys' shifting, and there's some great moments of characterisation for Raven, Starfire, and Donna - all of who gets the spotlight to kick ass. Big fan. It was really cool to see Starfire and Tameraneans being talked about on the same scale of power as Kryptonians. Definitely need more Kori and tameranean content in general.
I liked this event. it was well structured and had consequences to be followed up on in books afterwards very similar to the 2000s event of marvel and dc.
reis' art is outstanding. Lucas Meyer im a big fan of now too. I like putting the other titans at the forefront as nighting has their own book. I liked Garfield was taken out for a long period as he is the Michaelangelo of the group, but more annoying. I like his powers but not personality. I think that more comes from he young justice cartoon.
Still not there. The best parts of this arc focus on the titans and Wallers power struggle, but are far too few in the span of this story. The wrap of for out the shadows is such a wet fart- but luckily we close out this volume with some better things. Peacemakers appearances get only funnier, Walkers taking of the hall of justice feels suitably sickening, and we’re that much closer to the dark winged queen!
Really liked how they raised the bar for this, it truly felt like stakes-are-high type of event. I feel like it wasn’t perfect but it delivered raising the Titans and have them be more of a focus after the Justice League disbanded. I feel like it was the first time they felt like the main superheroes.
I’m really impressed, especially by the ending which I didn’t see coming and I can’t wait to see what the next volume brings.
