“The poets say love and hate stem from the same vine of passion.” Left orphaned at the age of eight by the cruel occupation of demons in her homeland, Onora has committed her life to keeping that evil from ever returning. She’s climbed to the top of the ranks of the Hunter’s Guild, specially training to fight against the stronger, more magical beings that would oppress humans. She’s held fast to her oaths–her honor never wavering and her hatred of demons steadfast as always.
Except, maybe, for Lord Dryston.
Dryston has been lord of the demons for ten years, the responsibility thrust on him at a young age. He’s fought hard to undo the damage done by the Cruel Lord before him, hitting hurdle after hurdle along the way. When a group of demon hunters arrive in town, he knows it can only spell trouble. Yet he can’t wrench his attention away from Lieutenant Onora–beautiful, unyielding, and at least slightly hostile towards him.
But what starts out as harmless flirtation turns into something deadly when Dryston is the number one suspect of a heinous crime committed against humans. Taken in for trial, he’s certain death awaits him–unless Onora can help him escape.
Hopeless romantic. Bookworm. Gamer. Dog mom (our brains really do bond with them as if they are our children, I'm not just a millennial woman in her 30s!). Plant murderer. Purveyor of stories.
Received this as an ARC, I have really enjoyed all of Willows books so far! I loved the banter between the two main characters and the build up to their relationship. This was a nice wrap up to the trilogy and being able to connect with all the other characters. Willows books never disappoint on taking you to another land that keeps you engaged the whole time.
All of Willow’s books feel like a warm hug to me, and A Storm of Shadows is no exception. We get to follow Dryston and Onora, two characters we’ve met before on their leg of this trilogy. I had such a good time reading this book today, it was exactly what I needed at the moment! It was a great balance between the world I already loved so much, some touchy topics, romance, and a plot that kept me super engaged. If you’ve read books 1 and 2 I definitely recommend this to you!!
Thank you so much to Willow Quinn for the advanced copy!
This is the third and final installment in the trilogy. I enjoyed reading about the conclusion to the series however would have preferred more focus on the big overarching conflict. It seemed like it was resolved too easily and too quickly. The beginning had a lot of buildup but the ending felt more rushed in comparison.
I really enjoyed 𝒜 𝒮𝓉𝑜𝓇𝓂 𝑜𝒻 𝒮𝒽𝒶𝒹𝑜𝓌𝓈! I've been lucky to get an ARC of each book and I've loved this series, I've appreciated so much being on this journey from the start. I know this is the last one but I hope there's a possibility for a Silenus book🙏🏻
As usual this had the perfect mix of tension, wholesomeness and spice. I love the way each book has a unique couple dynamic and I was really excited for Dryston and Onora's!
This was another dual POV, always my favourite, and it was great to get both perspectives. I will say I didn't love how violent they were with each other at first but it does fit with their situation so that's just a me issue. Unfortunately I do think this one relied a bit too heavily on miscommunication/not communicating, they took longer to get together than necessary because of a lack of communication and making assumptions which can get frustrating. However, this does make sense for their dynamic and their individual characters. I did enjoy the overall pacing and seeing them build from enemies to reluctant allies to friends to lovers, Willow always does the stages of a relationship build up so well! It was really nice seeing two people with such tough exteriors but softer interiors learn to open up with each other and see each other, it made the trust that developed between them and the open adoration they have for each other that much sweeter. I mentioned in my review for the previous book that I was a bit iffy about Dryston but he is 100% a new book boyfriend for me, I'm usually pretty over the whole shadow daddy thing but he is really great and I loved getting his POV
I love the other relationships and friendships, I want a book for every character honestly I love them all and I feel like being invested in every character just shows the authors talent! Kalen 🥺 I love a loyal grump and if he got a book I would absolutely eat it up
As usual the spice is so good. It didn't feel rushed into, the yearning and wanting is great, and consent is important. It's (so) hot and sweet at the same time, the emotional connection was still a focal point which I loved because that can get lost in spicy scenes sometimes
A Storm of Shadows is probably the least cozy book of the three, not in a bad way because it makes sense since the stakes have had a nice steady build in each book and this really was the culmination. It has a lot of character focus though which keeps a bit of that cozy vibe and I think the setting does too. There is adventure and mystery that keeps you hooked and the worldbuilding is expanded on even more
Honestly I just want to shout from the rooftops about this book because I know it would be up most people's alley right now, it ticks the popular boxes without feeling like it does
side note: for anyone who was disappointed (disgusted) in ACOSF/ACOTAR relationship dynamics like me, this one is for you to live vicariously through! trust me
𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅 𝒊𝒇 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆: • shadow daddies • enemies to lovers to reluctant allies to friends to lovers who A D O R E each other • demon x demon hunter • 10 Things I Hate About You dynamic • forced proximity • stabby FMCs who are actually just trying to hold it together most of the time • "i didn't know where else to go" • touch her and die • "good girl"
After the last book, I was curious to see how the author would write Onora and Dryston's story, especially because I knew overcoming my issues with her character would be challenging. I really struggle with characters who have blind hatred for others based on pre-existing biases and an inability to even listen to other perspectives. I am very glad to say that this book was not only an amazing conclusion to the sibling's stories but it also succeeded in redeeming Onora in my eyes. I received this book as an eARC in exchange for an honest review and I am so thankful I got this opportunity.
Trust me, I fully understand that Onora is very much valid in her hatred of the demons. My eir with her character was never her initial hatred and distrust, it was always in the fact that no matter how much evidence she saw that proved her bias wrong, and no matter how much she interacted with them she actively refused to believe they could be telling her the truth. She was running on blind hatred and that point honestly tends to strike a bad chord in me cause I have seen and interacted with real people like that and I genuinely don't have the patience for it. It is something that was still a continued struggle throughout the entire first half of this book (obviously cause where else would the conflict in the enemies to lovers come from) so I was sceptical that I would be able to get behind the relationship. I was proven wrong.
Without spoiling anything specific the way this story played out felt paced out and realistic enough that I was able to naturally start supporting them and I loved watching them come together and share bits and pieces of themselves. Because of this, it was a little disappointing that we didn't get very much time with them truly as a couple. So much of the book was about their progression from hating one another to loving and trusting one another -which was absolutely needed- but then as soon as they finally got together it was like we were moving at 2x speed and there wasn't even a real moment to enjoy it. While I know there was a whole other plot that was the main focus of the story to get to I would have appreciated having at least 1 chapter of them finding their footing as a pair before everything went to shit for them.
If you like enemies to lovers where there is actual animosity (and for good reason) this is the story for you.
Onora had horrible experiences with demons that drove her to be a hunter and Dryston had horrible experiences with hunters. But they keep finding themselves in situations where they have to work together to survive. That forced proximity causes them to eventually see each other in a different light (though it takes Onora a lot longer to come around).
The progression of their relationship from enemies to reluctant allies to tentative friends to passionate lovers is *chef's kiss* and the mysterious evil hinted at in the ending of the previous book comes to a head in the last 1/4 of A Storm of Shadows!
Thank you, Willow Quinn and BookSprout for the opportunity to read and review an advance copy. 💜
I thought I'm gonna love this more than the first book but I didn't. First I didn't like that this was a continuation of the second book and they already met and went to a mission together, which was not in their pov. We didn't get to see when they're first met and they just mentioned what happened between them here and there. Second the I'm trying to kill you get boring real fast. When it's like the millionth time that she put a dagger to him I just didn't care anymore. I also didn't like Onora that much.
The third that really gave me the ick was when they were trying to fuck other people because they couldn't communicate at 80% into the book. Especially the mmc, because the other girl refused to be used by him. If she had let him what would have happened? We will never know
what a wonderful story!!!! please be sure to read the previous books to understand all that is going on. this was such a GOOD enemies to lovers story, i know it's used so often but always leaves me giggling and kicking my feet and Willow Quinn writes them SO well. i loved reading this story and seeing bits from previous book in this as well. there is a decent amount of spice which is always fun 👀. Willows stories always manage to suck me in and keep me reading and that was the same with this. please check this out, especially if you love romantasy, enemies to lovers, and very badass FMC!
But in all seriousness, I did my damnedest with this book and I'm proud of it. I wrote the story I wanted to read, and I hope you all enjoy it too. And if you don't, as always, thanks for reading anyway!
For anyone leaving a review: THANK YOU. Reviews are so important for indie authors and you taking the time to not only read my novel but also thoughtfully review it means the world to me. I don't read them (I don't like pain that much), but I do see how many I have and it warms my heart. Love you all <3
Onora is a demon hunter with a vendetta against a previous Lord of Shadows. Dryston is a demon that's the current Lord of Shadows, accused of a heinous crime against humans and is captured to stand trial.
I LOVED the banter. The enemies were fierce, which makes the inevitable even sweeter... and spicier.
I've enjoyed the characters in each book in this series grow towards each other - and this couple was my favorite. I love a good "it means something to me, but does it mean something to THEM?" moment.
This was my favorite book out of the series. This book was interesting the whole way through. Where as the rest dragged on with the same fillers just repeating. To the point I found myself scrolling through just to get to something interesting.
It seemed like the author really forms her rhythm with this book and I wish there were more to follow
This is the third book in the fates and fables series. I love that we get to see characters from the previous books. I love seeing this family of demons getting their fated mates. Can't wait for more.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The third and final book in the Fates and Fables, another good story in this series. Dryston and Onora's well written story with a good storyline and a happy ending. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I have absolutely loved this whole series. Reading about this family of demons finding their fated mates has been a great time. I love that characters from previous books show up here and there and I continue to squeal at their appearances. This romance between Dryston and Onora brings everything that Onora believes into question and I will not lie that at times I wanted to shake her, but I understood her reluctance in wanting to toss all she believed to be true away. Dryston is definitely the first to fall but also very much not a push over when it comes to Onora losing her cool on him from time to time. I enjoyed their banter at the front of the book and their flirting. Really good read.
I feel like we reverted right back to book one with this installation. After such a strong book two, I’m so disappointed, I was so looking forward to Drystan and Onora’s story.
I struggled with their relationship. While the enemies to lovers started off really cute it went on for way, WAY too long and I was absolutely over it.
The constant repetition of her past trauma was insane and made this book so much longer than it needed to be. I’m not saying that she wasn’t absolutely right to take her time to grow from what she went through… but she was constantly shitting on Drystan and constantly sabotaging any personal growth she was developing. She threw herself back to square one so many times just for the sake of it.
Hardly anything even happened in this book until the very end because we were so focused on Onora’s feelings.
To make matters worse, after building up the entire plot in book 2, it didn’t carry over into this one. I loved the story that was developed and I really missed it here.
