My Thoughts:
This was a great addition to the Monstrous World series!
I really enjoyed both Molly and Allarion as characters. They share some key qualities, particularly their deep devotion to the people they love. Both are willing to risk everything for those they care about, often putting others' needs ahead of their own. For Molly, this book is a journey of self-discovery. She’s spent so much of her life living for others that she never really discovered who she was on her own. Allarion, in his own way, gives her the space and support to explore this, allowing her to begin reclaiming her sense of self. 🫶
Allarion's attempts at wooing Molly were honestly hilarious, especially since he's so clueless about humans. Despite his good intentions, everything he did seemed to go wrong, and he fumbled his way through their interactions. For a while, Molly holds his missteps against him, which made sense to some extent, but I have to admit, her vindictiveness toward him in the beginning did rub me the wrong way. She made a promise to herself to "take this man for everything he was worth. Whatever he loved, she would find and take." This didn't seem to align with her character. She is a barmaid and has years of experience reading people, so she is able to see things from others' perspective and discover their intentions and truths. But instead of doing that with Allarion, she just gets mad, locks herself in her room, refuses to speak to him, and plans to get even. It seemed childish and a bit of a contrived reaction to her situation in order to create tension and drama between the MCs.
What I loved most, though, was how Allarion never gave up on winning her over. His persistence, despite all his mistakes, is really endearing. Over time, Molly softens, and they evolve into such a sweet couple. Their bond becomes evident in the little things, like singing duets at the piano and cooking together in the kitchen. It’s these quiet moments that really show how sincere their connection was. 🫶
There was a lot of spice in this book and it was very fulfilling. I mean, he has a pierced peen and can use his magic to weird a phantom dick. There's biting, somnophilia, tiddy f*cking, mutual masturbation, and watching in a mirror. The chemistry between Molly and Allarion is undeniable, which made these scenes extremely enjoyable to read.
The sentient house was such a fun addition to the story! Even though it didn’t speak, it somehow became a lovable side character in its own right. I love how it was always offering comfort to Molly, especially in the beginning when she felt alone and afraid.
And then there's Bellarand, the grumpy unicorn, with his hilarious vendetta against the squirrels. 😂 His interactions with Molly were so entertaining, especially the way they bickered back and forth. And while their arguments started off genuine, as they gained respect for each other, it gradually became a way for them to express affection and care.
I really enjoyed that the MMC was fae, so it gave us a fascinating deeper dive into the fae world and their complex politics. The way the book explored their culture, their rules, and the tension that comes with being part of such an ancient, powerful race added a lot of richness to the story. The stakes were relatively high, especially at the end, which I enjoyed. And even though the romance wrapped up nicely, there's a bit of a storyline cliffhanger that will lead into the next book and focus on another couple. So I'm excited to read the next book.
Aside from Molly’s initial reaction to her marriage to Allarion, my only other "complaints" about the story are the pacing and length. At times, it felt a bit drawn out, with sections that seemed overly detailed or repetitive. There were moments where the story could have been more concise, and I found myself skimming through some parts that didn’t feel essential to the plot.
