Connected Islands: New and Selected Poems

Rate this book
Although the subject matter and style of these poems are quite varied, the overall theme is that, while we are individual and isolated, we are more together than we realize, sharing common experiences. The four sections include poems about loss of identity; the significance of places; the universal appeal of poetry; civil rights,; African American contributions; a group of very original poems based on sacred music interpreted from the contemporary urban African American perspective; aging; friendship; and familial and romantic love.

Madgett's Remembrances of Spring: Collected Early Poems is one of my two favorite books of poetry so I read this in honor of National Poetry Month. In this collection she writes about a variety of topics, including civil rights, and loss of personal identity. Wonderful poetry - HIGHLY recommend!

Naomi Long Madgett's New and Selected Poems gives us a glimpse of the changing America--particularly for African Americans--and a glimpse of a poetry that is becoming passe. The best of these poems are soulful, gritty, and wise with a subtle music and humor that I wish were more strongly woven throughout the book.
