奥义书是古印度一类哲学文献的总称，是广义的吠陀文献之一。虽然奥义书由吠陀发展而来，因而经常被理解为婆罗门教与印度教的经典，但奥义书并不都是由婆罗门阶层写的，也不都接近反映婆罗门教的观点。现在已知的奥义书约有200多种，记载印度教历代导师和圣人的观点。本书所译的是学界公认的13种原始奥义书，它们是印度唯心论哲学思想和唯物论哲学思想的总源泉，在很大程度上成为了后来印度哲学的基础。
