This volume covered The Emperor and the Hanged Man to The Wheel of Fortune. With the introduction of one my favorite secondary character and minor antagonist in the series, Hol Horse.

In another universe, Polnareff and Hol Horse would be besties.

A lot of this volume did center around Polnareff, (not that I’m really complaining, as I love his character) and getting his revenge on his sister. Jotaro only really took action toward the last arc, The Wheel of Fortune.

I did like seeing Joseph using hamon. It was nice to see that call back from the previous installments.

We got the return of Anne, who has an attachment to the crusaders, even if means entangling with danger.

I felt like the arcs and the villains our characters faced in this issue aren’t as interesting as previous (and future) novels (with the exception of Hol Horse.) still an good novel from Araki. See you in volume four.

I do not enjoy Part 3 and I am done. I got a summary for the rest of the series and it's clear that I'm not missing much.

Part 2 was so funny and cool and had great characters and this just feels like the soul was sucked out of it in favor of cranked up gore and weird magic-y fighting. It's so sad after how decent part 2 was.

Also, the raging sexism and racism of part 3 are extremely uncomfortable. I'm moving on to part 4 soon enough.

Another great adventuring volume. Polnareff is hilarious and iconic. The stand users they fight in this volume are fun and varied, and the whole story is just so engaging and entertaining. Pure fun!

Oh hell yeah we're in it now folks! I feel like I was too much of a hater in the first two volumes because I'm having such a great time now. I think everyone really locked in and the plot kicked off more. Joseph also got to do his "the next thing you'll say is" thing so of course I clapped and cheered.
Also I am not immune to a cool character design and I'm a big enjoyer of star platinum now purely because he looks super rad. Unfortunately he also really reminds me of the costume designs from Starlight Express, but the costumes are the best part of that trainwreck (HAHA) of a musical.
I couldn't think of a joke about Mad Max that I could somehow make relevant to Jojo but rest assured any time a car was on the page I was thinking about it. Honestly some of the outfits in those movies would absolutely be something a character would wear in this so I think it works.

This is a great volume, with some solid character work and an awesome Battle Tendency throwback with a stellar and disgusting Joseph arc. The weird bits are a lot of fun, and Araki does such a good job keeping the stakes high with the Stand battles. That's what we're all here for, thoughtful, clever stand powers and interactions. This was one of my favorite volumes, but it's held back by some dated and unflattering depictions of non-Japanese cultures. Still, lots of fun, interested in what's next.

JJBA has it’s funny moments, but the blatant racism of Indian people, and the random pedophilic behavior from Polnareff and Hol Horse, make Part 3 hard to enjoy.

(Not only spoilers for this volume, but all of stardust as well) It quite frankly feels illegal to give this volume 3 stars, because it contains BOTH the Hol Horse and Hanged Man fight which I think is one of the better and more thought out fights in the part given the two villains are actually kind of important not one off characters, AND the Empress fight which IS a one off but is a fantastic solo dilf Joseph moment that I would not trade away for the world. It also reminded me how different the manga is for stardust as opposed to the anime - the villain of the week format just translates so much better in a reading format and while many of what I imagine are considered to be the more forgettable fights have already passed, I haven't ONCE felt like any of them were a slog or unnecessary while reading the part.

However, I will concede two stars on this volume for two reasons: 1) the Avdol fake death shtick was, I think, one of the biggest missteps of this part. Avdol is a fantastic character (my personal favorite of the new 3), and it was really a shame to lose him for such a significant portion of the part at such a crucial moment when we're still getting to know the new characters. Also, it IS all Polnareff's fault it happened and I absolutely will never forgive him for it, so it was just weird to me to have the main cast just so reaccept him into the gang and have so little tension because of it between him and them, even if they did all secretly know Avdol was still alive the whole time. But, I guess that is just part of the trappings of a more causal villain of the week story. 2) The Wheel of Fortune fight brings back that damn CHILD again and this time her only use is to have the hots for Jotaro; at this point her presence in the part is literally unforgivable. If any volume of Jojo's were to EVER get 2 stars from me (none ever will), it would be this volume for this reason alone.

Quote of the Volume:

"MY stand is a GUN!"

The globe trotting adventures continues in Volume 3 as our group reach India. Sadly the depiction of India isn’t the best. There was a bit when they first arrive what they say certain things are just a stereotype and that they would have a great time in India but this sadly was just a setup for a joke. There is even a bit with some literal toilet humour. Oh dear. Thankfully this doesn’t last for long and we don’t get too much of it but that is mainly because they ignore pretty much everything about India. The road trip could have been anywhere.
As with every volume there is plenty of action in fact I think this is the best volume so far. The new stand users we get to meet are all great and have a fantastic variety of powers. We’ve had plane battles and boat battles and now we get to have car battles.
There is some great character development for Polnareff in this volume and it’ll be interesting to see where they take his character from here. There is also an event that shows that no one is truly safe. Anything could happen to anyone at anytime whether they are a main character or not.
There is a strange fourth wall break near the end which I’m not sure how to take as it seemed to come out of nowhere and hasn’t happened before. It wasn’t bad just a bit unexpected and strange.
I can’t wait to see what adventures the gang get up to in Pakistan. Will we get a fight with a train this time?

The volume started with introducing the Emperor and the Hanged man until the end of their fight and finished with the Wheel of Fortune arc. The rest of the chapters were dedicated to the Empress arc and her fight against Josef Joestar.

BRING OUT THE HOL HORSE !!!

the emperor and hanged man arc is probably one of my favorites out of jojo, for introducing two great villains, some of the most memorable out of stardust crusaders i might add.

ONE THING I SHOULD GET ACROSS:
one of my favourite parts of this volume are the visuals, oh man are there some amazing panels drawn in this. the amount of killer poses, detailing, and camera angles on display are staggering, some of my favourite shots being of hanged man, seeing him in reflections was a real treat.

hol horse is one of my favourite jojo characters period for being such a conniving shithead, he's never not entertaining when he's on screen, whether it's him flaunting his confidence in his strategy, or high-tailing it the second shit goes south. centerfold and his hanged man stand are also a highlight, being such a despicable piece of garbage with an admittedly awesome stand ability, that only seems unstoppable until you figure out it's true weakness.

it also characterizes polnareff very well, and shows his greatest flaws and his greatest strengths as a person, which i can appreciate, since i'm a pretty big polpol fan. he's honestly more of a main character than jotaro himself, (i'll still stand by the fact that the fight for survival against vanilla ice was a more hair-raising fight than jotaro's battle with DIO, but that's a review for another day.)

the other two arcs in this book are also pretty fun reads, albeit not as impactful as the previously mentioned one. it's nice seeing joseph joestar get spotlight for a change, as he more often than not gets pushed into the background during this arc, and the empress is a pretty enjoyably gross stand. wheel of fortune was another fun stand to deal with, though it wasn't really that interesting to think about frankly, it sort of just felt like araki was really in the mood to draw some cars at the time of writing wheel of fortune.

merlai anne is also just kind of.. there during the arc, it's the last time she appears and she doesn't really have any more impact than she did in the previous volumes, i really don't get where araki was going with her.. ah well.

another flaw i should mention, is that i'm not a particularly big fan of the way a lot of the indian people are depicted in these chapters, there's plenty of stereotypes depicted in the background characters, and even though this series is old as fuck, i still feel like i should mention this for anyone who would wanna read this now.

in summary, i'd recommend this volume based on the first arc alone, just being fucking stellar in general, but the latter arcs are fun reads too, even if hol horse and j. geil are tough acts to follow. :]

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusader’s v3

Our heroes have made it to India! And if their enemies don't get them, the culture shock will! But before they even have time to settle in, evil Stand users are upon them. If you thought the enemies they fought before were strange, wait until you see what they're up against now.

I’m gonna do a lot of echoing the review for volume 2.

This was another “monster of the week” installment. The Dio search is going very slow. Jotaro, the main character, only has dialogue in like 2 or 3 of the 10+ chapters of this volume.

And it all works man. I loved this one and wish it was longer. The only grievance I have is that I wish the Hanged Man stayed around longer because he was SICKKKK and the panels that Araki gave him were freaking ART, man.

I can’t believe Avdol got got like that. Wanted more of Magician’s Red.

The body horror is wild. Empress is disgusting. Wheel of Fortune is bonkers. I’m just here for it man. These first 3 vols have all been 10/10s for me. This really is a bizarre adventure.

Also, Hol Horse is kind of a chad? I def thought he was a SBR guy but I am unlearned so bear with me.

My exact thought process as I'm reading this series: "What the...??"

Most of this volume featured Polnareff (stupid Polnareff), though having Kaykoin (awesome Kakyoin) at his side made it bearable. Joseph's struggle was amusing, but the story really picks up again in the last third, with Jotaro/Star Platinum. We've now gone from Japan to Singapore to India, and they're on their way to Pakistan. In the previous volumes, we had air battles and sea battles, and now we have a car battle. Literally a car that can climb cliffs. Don't miss it.

And you gotta love that subtle breaking of the fourth wall at the end there.

Hol Horse & Hanged Man are two of my favorite characters/fights. Almost the whole group gets a good fight in or at least plays a big role in the fight (except Avdol 💀). Joseph’s fight with The Empress is awesome & I love how he used his Hamon. The fight against Wheel of Fortune is hilarious bc the group gets so mad & beat up civilians only to get played again😭 Glad Jotaro ends up beating WoF tho. The art seems to get a little better in this volume too, especially with Avdol and Joseph it feels like.

This installment sticks to the series' established formula, which is perfectly fine given how solid it is. The pacing makes it easy to dive into, and the introduction of Hol Horse is a definite highlight! I do think Joseph could have been given a bit more to do in his battles. It feels like a harsh drop from being the main hero of Part 2 to struggling with a sentient boil.

That being said, Araki's passion shines through in the character designs and world-building, making it hard to stay disappointed for long. I'm excited to see where the journey goes next.

This is about where I really started to pay attention to the anime. From what I remember, it stays pretty faithful.

Stowaway still doesn't have a name and the crew isn't too concerned about her. Except that Jotaro's heart of gold leads him to save her. He is still a jerk and it's still weird and still wonderful. Not as wonderful as Joseph Joestar is, though. Despite my reading this series just to see how much tarot meanings play into it, I kind of want to read Battle Tendency for more Joseph.

Polnareff goes off to find the creep that killed his sister. He runs into Hol Horse, who's out for his head. Avdol dies after chasing after Polnareff, killed by a stand that uses reflections to attack. Polnareff finally gets his revenge thanks to Kakyoin. Hol Horse finds Polnareff and Kakyoin, while grandpa Joestar has his own stand user to defeat. The gang gets attacked while driving, Jotaro quickly defeats the stand user.

Action packed! The best description for this third issue of Part 3. Despite having some odd irregularities and a strange case of 4th wall breaking at some point (uncharacteristic until now) this issue also has a lot of redeaming qualities such as ofeering a better explanation for Hermit Purple, some crucial character development for the Crusaders, along with some very tense, very emotional moments...and last but not least, the introduction of the one and only, HOL HORSE.

Two more enemy stand users confront JoJo and company in India. Hol Horse with Emperor (a wild west outlaw) and Centerfold with Hanged Man (the guy who murdered Polnareff's sister). However, neither of these two are as horrifying as the third enemy, The Empress. There's also a fourth enemy that show up here: Wheel of Fortune, which isn't as nice as it sounds.

Amazingly, the pig in the toilet isn't the weirdest thing in this volume.

Part 3 - Stardust Crusaders has 10 volumes.

- well, this had a lil bit of racism.
- man, he will be missed.
- centerfold had some interesting techniques
- this volume had the vibes of a western set in india? man, it's so random
- joseph's story in this volume felt like an 80s horror film
- the car sequence was creepy and irritating at the same time?
- i have some suspicions regarding that hitchhiker girl, but she is annoying. araki still has issues with female portrayl.

Hol Horse is a truly iconic villain (though now I can’t help but imagine him as part of the team after reading Araki’s note). This volume wasn’t quite as good as the past two since this is around the time where the stand battles start to get a little monotonous—and will probably stay that way for the next few volumes. The bathroom incidents begin here, which is easily one of my favorite gags about this part. So, overall a fun volume but lacking in some aspects.

Finally kicking into gear as a road trip that allows Araki to show off his creativity with stand concepts and battle strategy. I can finally see myself getting into JoJo's if it builds off of this.

On a less positive note: Araki sure does have some uncomplimentary feelings about India. At least I haven't seen any sympathetic nazi characters in awhile.

Public library copy.

There was some whacked out scenes in this story arc and I've finally gotten to a point in the manga beyond what I've seen in the anime so I've no idea what's going to happen next, but one things for sure weird bad guys with off beat Stand powers keep showing up.

I finished reading this whole part sometime in the summer, but I don't know when. I know it is a very popular opinion, but Part 3 is certainly my favorite. I am a huge Jotaro Kujo fan. Anyway, folks who haven't read Part 3 are sure to enjoy it if they have enjoyed Part 1 and Part 2.
