Richard Nathan is very knowledgeable about Japanese literature, so I was really looking forward to reading this book. Surely there are few other books that cover such territory and depth on the subject of modern Japanese literature. At times whimsical, at times investigative, whenever I opened this book I learned a few more fascinating facts about Japanese literature and authors. I recommend this book for the true conossiuers of Japanese literature.

This comprehensive guide to the unique world of Japanese literature is both fascinating and insightful. Nathan skillfully navigates this rich tapestry of Japanese penmanship chronologically and contextually by structuring his narrative around 21 thematically grouped essays. The reader will discover, among other things, Japan’s obsession with dolls, devices, robots and cats, while understanding something of this nation’s psyche and ravenous appetite for storytelling, whether in long or short form. For anyone eager to understand the rich and diverse history of Japanese literature, this excellent book is a fabulous starting place.
Alex Pearl is the author of several novels and non-fiction titles including The Chair Man and the Finkle & Lovejoy murder mysteries. He is also a member of the Crime Writers' Association.

Hundreds, or even thousands, of random — interesting and useful! — facts about Japanese literature and culture immersed in an unending stream of rambling, self-contradictory, unbearably punny horsheshit.
