The killer took Claire’s car and wallet, and left traces of blood at the scene, but Val’s instincts tell her the attack wasn’t random.

Interviewing Claire’s students and the people she helped at the shelter, Val thinks she’s hit another wall. Until DNA results from the blood at the crime scene turn the entire case on its head; Val’s assailant was a woman. Who is she, and why would she do this?

With more questions than answers, Val battles one of the toughest cases of her career. But when the trail leads her to a monster hiding right in front of her all along, will she catch them before another precious life is taken?

This was another entertaining read featuring former FBI agent from the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), Val Costa.

I won’t go over the basics or background, because I trust you to read the synopsis if you are interested in the book, and suspect you already have.

The good: the case is intricate and not straightforward, which kept me interested. Also the supporting cast is interesting and the history of the main character makes for an interesting side-drama.

The not so good: despite this not being an overly long book, I still felt like there was a lot of padding. The author repeats things over and over as though we can’t be trusted to remember things (for instance, that Val suspected someone from the very beginning and why). I just think it could’ve been tighter.

I will read the next book in the series, because now I’m invested.

Thanks to HK Christie, Bookouture, and NetGalley for providing me with the ARC and the opportunity to review the book.

Book 1 was good. Book 2 was fantastic. I’m really enjoying Val, plus all the surrounding characters as well as the continuing thread that is through this series. I am looking forward to book 3.

The good news is that I like the author AND the FBI profiler. Too many authors think that a female protagonist has to be an obnoxious drunk in order to be strong. The writer has an easy reading style especially for such tough subjects. Most of the characters in this book series are really likable. So why the 3 stars? Because, shockingly the plot was way too similar to the first book. Also, both books tell us the killer way too early. Then, the additional plot has virtually the same basic similarities for the murder. With so many plots out there, why do this in two back to back books!? I’m reading the third installment, but if it almost the same, I vow to read no more of her books. Yes, I sound a little strong, and they aren’t exactly the same, but if you’ve read them, you should get my point.

Don't Make A Sound by H.K. Christie is the second in the Val Costa series.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Series Background: (Warning – Contains spoilers from previous books)
FBI Special Agent Val Costa was living in DC until she was kidnapped by the serial killer known as The Bear. She had been hunting him, but made a mistake. Thankfully her team rescued her, but not before having The Bear's signature carved into her skin. He is still at large. She moved back in with her mom in Red Rose County California to recover, but when her mom had a stroke, she retired from the FBI to care for her. She has an 18-year old son Harrison who is starting at MIT. She is middle-aged, and divorced. Val has a sister Maxine, who is a major in the U.S. Army.

My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
Val retired from the FBI to look after her mom, who had a stroke.  However,  she agrees to work as a consultant with the Rose County Sheriff's office when Claire Nelson, a local teacher, is found stabbed to death in her kitchen.

Val immediately suspects Claire's husband Jordan, but everyone assures her that he is the perfect husband and father to his two children. But Val is sure he is hiding something.

When they finally get DNA evidence back from the scene of the crime, they are stunned to find that Claire's assailant was a woman.

Val and the team start looking into Claire's life. They check out the school where she works, it's staff and students. They also look into an encampment and a soup kitchen where Claire has been active. At the encampment, Val runs into a woman who seems to be happy that Claire is dead, but she is so high and so mentally unstable, that nothing she says makes sense.

Meanwhile, Val gets another note from someone that she assumes is the Bear. She's still fears he is coming after her.

My Opinions:
I am starting to enjoy this series. I wasn't real sure after the first book, but the second one makes me want to read more.

I had similar issues with this one as I did the first, as I didn't always like Val or her attitude. I still don't like the idea of her and Brady together either, because I think she would just overpower him in a relationship. However I still really like the supporting cast. Her mom and her mom's friends are wonderful, and I really like Lucy and Sally.

As well, this was another really good story.  Again, it was somewhat predictable, and there were no real surprises, but it was still really interesting well plotted out.

I still don't appreciate the ongoing Bear story line.

I liked how the author alternated chapters between Val's point of view and that of Tally. That was really interesting.  I loved Tally

Overall, the book, although dealing with a rather dark subject matter, held my interest from start to finish. I am now looking forward to the third in the series.

if you thought the first instalment of val costa’s life was good, then this second instalment just knocked it out of the ballpark. h.k. christie once again balances character’s personal lives and casework SO well, with a three character POV structure that works really well. following more of val’s life (and her budding partnership-turning-relationship (i hope!) with brady) as well as being teased with more from the bear made this book an easy five star read.

only thing i’m left asking? when’s book three hitting shelves (and who is the bear..)

Was a bit of a let down. I really liked the first one in this series but this one was nothing special.

For me this would blend in with all the other thrillers I have read.

The ending was a let down for me, no twist, no shock.

Did like the characters and the story was solid.

would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book

i hadnt realised it was book 2 in the series but i still enjoyed it

Agent Val Costa has retired from the fbi so that she can look after her mom who has had a stroke and is fighting to get back to how she was before. as a fomer fbi agent she has helped the police force in that county with any crimes that need her specialised knowledge

so when Claire Nelson is found murdered val is called in.... claire is a very popular teacher, she is also an active church goer and helps the homeless... so why would anyone want to murder her...

but its not long before val has a whiff of a scent only its proving to be very unpopular with everyone....

its not a bad read and i can see myself getting hooked into this series all the characters are likeable well apart from the baddies so will be keeping an eye out for more from this author they have an easy style of writing that pulls you in and keeps you glued to the pages, a win win for me

This was a pretty good crime thriller that had me interested from the first page. I hadn't realized that this was #2 in a series, so I kind of felt confused about all the references to the previous book. This wasn't a deal breaker and is totally my fault, but I kind of skimmed over those parts because I didn't know what or who they were talking about.

The chapters were pleasantly short, and the crime plot was interesting. I liked Val as a character, and enjoyed how the book ended. Not always a fan of a cliffhanger, but I'm looking forward to reading the next in this series.

Great sequel to the first Val Costa series-

Val who was an FBI agent in the first book resigns due to her mom becoming ill and needing assistance- Val helps out the local PD with solving a homicide investigation that ended with a twist I wasn’t expecting.

Looking forward to starting my ARC for the third book.

Another addictive crime thriller suspense from H. K. Christie. Don’t Make a Sound is the second book in the series. Can it be read as a standalone? I would recommend reading the first book. There is so much backstory to Val.
When a woman is found murdered in her kitchen. Val is asked to help the police with the investigation into what happened.
If you are in the mood to read a suspenseful psychological thriller, this is a series you should pick up.

Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

Big thanks to the author and the ARC team!

I thought I LOVED the first one…And I did. But this one?? It far exceeded my expectations! It was absolutely phenomenal! We learn even more about Val’s mom and her recovery from her stroke. Her mom’s friends are even amazing and helpful in many different ways.

I loved that Val felt that gut instinct from the beginning concerning Jordan and never let it go regardless of the community & the sheriffs’s opposition. This girl is SMART. She knew something was off with him and proved it. Even if she did have a little help…

Seeing how the author worked the Bear into this story just shows that there is a BIG situation coming soon with him. I loved seeing that he was watching and relishing in Val’s every move & even helped her solve the case. But of course it has me scratching my chin wondering, WHY is he helping her? Is it so he can remain in control or feel as though he is? Is he simply making sure he is one step ahead of her at all times?

I truly hope Val & Brady can spark a relationship when the time is right.

Amazing writing as always! And of course, amazing storyline!
I CANNOT wait for the next book in this series. Definitely a new favorite!

This is book 2 in the series. I love crime procedurals, so I went back and read book 1 before starting this one. Book 1 was GREAT, but this one is FANTASTIC! It is not necessary to read book 1 to read this book, but I highly recommend it!

This book starts off with a bang, and packs the action up until the very end. I love the balance that he author creates between the characters' personal lives and careers. It helps to bring depth to the characters and made it easy to connect with them. The plot develops from 3 POVs which are all interesting. Val is smart and tough, and I love female detectives that are fierce. There is something BIG on the horizon with the Bear, and I am anxiously awaiting the next book to see exactly what. I couldn't put this one down! I am really excited about this series.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This book felt overly drawn out, with a lot of unnecessary content that bogged down the pacing. It struggled to hold my attention for much of the story, and it wasn’t until around 70% in that things finally started to get interesting. While the ending might redeem the slow buildup for some readers, the excessive fluff made it hard to stay engaged. Overall, it had potential, but the pacing and lack of compelling momentum early on made it less enjoyable for me.

It was ok.. it was kind of a flat read. A lot of the book seemed to just be filler to get to the end? I put the book down for a few days and wasn’t really itching to get back into it. I was hoping there would be a surprise twist or something at the end, but.. it was pretty predictable.

You absolutely MUST read this series, Val Costa, from H.K. Christie! What a page turner! I wasn't sure she could top book #1, but this book #2 was even BETTER 👌👏🤩
Calling this an "addictive crime thriller" is an understatement - you better put aside some time to binge this one.
As a huge murder/crime/thriller fanatic I have to say this author may have to be one that joins my upper tier of writers. The writing is smooth as butter and the story flows wonderfully with many surprises and great suspense.
So far this series is not only gripping but addictive and suspenseful, stringing the reader through fantastic character development, mystery, and wonder.
By continuing to leave us readers hanging on a thread of suspense with regard to the mysterious serial killer who we vaguely learn more and more about, starting with the 1st book as an aside to each book's story, the author leaves you hooked on needing to know more.
I truly can't wait for more of this series! And that says a lot from me.
Brilliant 👏
This book seemed much grittier and suspenseful than the first, and I live for that style - I often read even more intense, descriptive murder thrillers, but I was pleasantly pleased by the engagement and detail here.
5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐'s!
Make sure you grab a copy of this page turner (along with book #1) to round out your thrilling summer reading list.

Don't Make a Sound by H.K. Christie is the 2nd book in the excellent Val Costa series and what a gripping and very addictive crime thriller this is. This has been a series i have enjoyed reading from the very first book and I love Val Costa character, she was/is a FBI Special Agent Val Costa was living in DC until she was kidnapped by the serial killer known as "The Bear." She was hunting him but he hunted her and captured her! So, glad her team rescued her in time. But, there was something "The Bear" always does to all his victims was to carved his signature on their skin!
Now, he is still out there, somewhere and walking freely amongst people.

This is a weird review as I was sure I wrote about book #1 and #2 in this series. I was going to write the review for book #3 and discovered that I didn't write anything for the entire series so this will be a common review for the entire series, including the third novel.
Val Costa is a great character: she's not wonder woman, she hasn't any huge chip on her shoulder nor a traumatic past, she's a clever and brave woman who works for FBI and collaborate with the local police.
She moved in a Californian county to be near her son after a meeting with a serial killer that left her branded and phisically hurt. She needs to recover and think about her future.
Red Rose county is not a huge and highly populated county, you have to suspend your belief because the number of violent death is highest than 58.4 dead for 100k person.
Statistics apart this is a hell of a series that improves with each installment and the third one is the best one so far. There's always suspense and emotions in these stories and I found the third one a gripping and heart wrenching page turner.
Val grew on me and I loved her evolution and cannot wait to read new stories as I wanted to visit Rose County and catch up with the characters.
I appreciated how the author developed the solid plots that surprised me and the good storytelling.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine

Val is living with her mother who had a stroke, having left the FBI.
She is called in by the Sheriff to investigate the murder of Claire Nelson, a beloved teacher in the town. Val immediately suspects Claire's husband, Jordan of being somehow involved in his wife's death.

This is another absolutely riveting instalment of the Val Costa series.
Val's instincts are almost always correct, and she has plenty of experience, having worked in the FBI.
There seems to be a theme of a secondary crime or crimes being uncovered while she is investigating.

I love the way she has found her niche with the team, and made close friends with the ladies. Also, the community spirit, and the way her mother and friends have an avid interest in the cases that Val investigates.
I suspect that Val's kidnapper, The Bear, will be making another attempt to kidnap her - I hope she figures out who he is.
The Admirer is concerning, leaving notes for Val and assisting behind the scenes with her cases.

Of course, there is a cliffhanger ....

Looking forward to the next in this series, Val is fast becoming one of my favourite strong female leads.

Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this book.

The second book in the Val Costa series picks up shortly after then end of the first. Val has remained in her home town, leaving her job in the FBI, to look after her mother after a stroke. Thee local police force takes advantage of her skills and take her on to help solve a recent murder of a seemingly well loved local teacher. I don't know how likely it is that someone would be taken on to help out with a murder in this way, but it worked well in the context of this story.
As with the first book, the more you read, the more you discover that there is much more to this than just murder. This was a gripping read that I didn't want to put down once I started. Val is clearly very experienced and she is very skilled in trying to solve the murder. I didn't manage to figure everything out this time, so Val was definitely ahead of me here.
There is still the question of the serial killer the Bear, who was Val's last case when part of the FBI and who is still at large since he held her hostage. Is the bear now behind the messages that Val has been receiving or has he moved away completely? No doubt well get more clues in later books.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and given voluntarily.

Book two in the series and it's another hit.

Red Rose County. Who would not want to live there.? It seems like such a peaceful place to spend your life, but the reality is far from rosy all the time.

The people living there must thank their lucky stars for Val, who is a champion in solving crime cases. As a former FBI agent, she struggled a bit to find her place in this quiet spot, but because she has lived their before, the villagers make her feel very welcome, except for the baddies, of course. :)

I am happy to see that Val has recuperated from her ordeal and starts making a life for herself again. She has found a job she likes and has found a few colleagues she bonds with.

Her former job as a profiler helps her to see things others don't and it's thanks to her determination she and her team get to the bottom of the case with a little help from a friend or is it a fiend?

This is another story that kept me glued to my screen. I like everything about it: the writing style, the characters, the setting. And of course, with a cliffhanger the author keeps us hanging, craving more, much more. 5 stars

Thank you

We have the second book in the Val Costa series. The first book was fantastic as is this one. Val is still back in her home town taking care of her mom, who suffered a stroke. She's retired from the FBI and getting a bit stir crazy. Her old school friend, Brady, asks for her help with a case of a woman found murdered in her home. Val had helped Brady in book 1 with a case and with her FBI training, did a remarkable job.

Val, herself, was recuperating from being taken by The Bear, a serial killer. Her team came in and saved her in book 1. Mentally, she still is processing being held captive and almost dying. She thinks she's getting letters from The Bear, so we have that going on too.

The author does a fantastic job with the characters and Val reconnecting with her home town. The characters and their lives are so relatable and Val's mom is just wonderful. I can't wait for the third book.

Thank you to Bookouture and Netgalley for the ARC, I greatly appreciate it and highly recommend this book and the previous one.

This series will have you gripped, serving up a mystery/case to be solved in each book with a continuing storyline that flows through in the search for a serial killer known as the Bear.

I requested the ARC of this book not realizing book 1 was also available to review so read book 2 first and since they both release on the same day, make sure you read this series in order as book one 1 sets the scene and there is the continued story that will flow through this series.

The Bear still has not been caught and it appears his MO has changed, a fixation on FBI Agent Val Costa.

After retiring from the FBI to look after her mother, she provides her assistance again to the local Sheriff's office after a local woman is found murdered in her home. A much-loved member of the community, the team are struggling to find a motive behind this brutal murder. As they dig deeper into the family, the community will be left reeling as the grizzly details that led to the attack come to light.

Looking forward to book 3 in this series.

Ugh, if you have NOT picked up one of H.K. Christie’s series yet, what are you doing with your life??😵‍💫 This book is the second in the Val Costa series and it was AMAZING. Probably the best one I’ve read so far, and I finished the Martina series.

If you love an easy read that is mixed with SVU vibes, you will love these stories.

This specific one of the Val Costa series, Don’t Make a Sound, had SO many twists and turns to it. It kept me guessing the ENTIRE time about the back story to the murder that happens in the very first chapter. Once you find out who the murderer is, H.K. Christie gives you MORE twists and turns and there’s even a bigger back story to WHY the murder took place.

Not only that, but NOW there is a “secret admirer” stalking Val Costa, helping her ironically with the cases she’s working, and we learn this throughout the SERIES. I just love these books so much and I’m so glad I discovered them.

Thanks to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC! 💚
