Ari Barlow has long survived on instinct.

It’s crucial for living in the crime capital of the Meridian System. Established for space travel and trade by Illyarium, a world of gods amongst men, the Port of Acheron is now a far cry from the holy image it was spawned from. Just how she likes it. Together, with her level-headed partner, Ari takes any job that brings in the credits.

Chosen to investigate a simple distress call, the pair travel to a desolate planet looking to find an easy pay day. Instead, they stumble upon a child in danger, and their decision to intervene puts into motion a war that will span the universe. Out of options and out of luck, Ari is torn away from the person she cares about most and burdened with a new responsibility in the form of a young ward with mysterious origins.

Desperate to get her life back on track, Ari charters a ship and meets a crew of unlikely allies. However, a target has been painted on her back and she is now enemy number one to mortals and immortals alike. Ari will be forced to make sacrifices, but the most dangerous battle to face is with the monster lurking inside her.

WHEN FATE IS THE OPPONENT, GOD AND MAN WILL BLEED ALIKE.

Lost in the Light is the debut novel from J.J. Kang. I found her and her first chapter on TikTok, and I was hooked from just the small bit I read then. When she announced her book was ready for ARC reviewers, I immediately signed up. I was lucky enough to be chosen to read her book before it releases to the general public, and I couldn't be more thrilled to sing its praises.

Ari Barlow, our main character, is a feisty, determined, and loyal female lead. She doesn't shy from a fight, she is steadfast in her resolve to defend the good, and she refuses to stay down, even when all odds are stacked against her.

The other characters in this book are so fun, and it's easy to forget they're fictional. The banter among all the characters is fantastic, and the way they all interact with each other truly gives the found family feeling.

While some twists in Ari's journey are expected, there were so many moments where I had to scoop my jaw up off the floor and continue reading through my shock. The setup and execution of the big twist is such a journey, and so well done, that I found myself just as gutted as though I myself had also been betrayed.

I did not want this adventure to end, and I am waiting on pins and needles to hear that J.J. is ready to announce book two!

I was lucky enough to beta read this book a few months ago, and just finished a second read through as an ARC. I've also pre-ordered a physical copy bc I just cannot get enough of Ari and the Nova's crew of misfits. I literally cannot believe this is a debut work. Every part of this from the slowburn romance to the platonic relationships to the action sequences to the twist on the chosen one trope is so artfully crafted. I am already absolutely feral waiting for the sequel.

I was lucky enough to get an E-ARC of Lost In The Light and I have never been more excited for a book to release!

Ari is this amazing, fun, smart ass of a character who captures your heart. She has been through so much and has continued to get back up. She is a force of fracking nature!

J.J. Kang provides the reader with action, thrills, and emotional turmoil as we follow the beloved characters of this sci-fi fantasy.

New found family, finding your self worth, and defying fate itself! What more could a reader ask for?!

The author has put her heart and soul into her work and it is clearly evident in her writing. I am so excited to finish this amazing journey with Ari!

I don’t even know where to begin. Lost in the Light is one of the best books I have read in a long time. I would pay an astronomical amount of money to be able to read this for the first time again. I was crying less than 100 pages in then laughing from the banter among Ari and the other characters. The world building made me feel like I was right there alongside the journey so much so that I was upset by peoples actions against Ari and I wanted to help her handle them. I am not so patiently awaiting book two because I need to know how Ari’s journey ends.

This book was amazing. The moment I finished it, I wanted to read it again or binge the entire series (but it hasn’t been released yet). I loved everything of this book: the characters, the world-building, the story itself.

Just when I think I’ve read the best book of the year, another one comes along. And this is definitely one of my favorites of the year. I knew it would be from the very first sentence.

However, what I liked most about this book were its characters. Both the main and side characters are well-developed and multidimensional. While the relationships between them aren’t always positive, they are all crafted with depth, and I enjoyed every single one. If you removed Ari from this story, the novel wouldn’t have much of a plot, but the world would still exist. Considering that this book is written in the first person, this speaks volumes about the author’s skills.

I also appreciated the non-binary representation with Cyn. Their pronouns are introduced and used throughout the novel with thoughtful simplicity.

What else can I say? If you enjoy fantasy and sci-fi, found family, badass heroines, and well-developed relationships between characters, you should pick up this book and embark on the journey across worlds with Ari and the crew.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️x a million!

I say this in the best way, this book WRECKED me. 5 stars. 5 million stars. I want the next book NOW- or rather yesterday when I finished Lost in the Light and kept trying to swipe for more just to realize it had ended. Oh, and bonus points! This is the first book in over a year to make me cry. Nay! Sob. 3 times. The emotional turning points and descriptions are spot on and hurt so good.

Ari Barlow is a badass filled with rage, grey morals, a haunted past, and a protective streak a mile wide. She's willing to fly the span of the universe and start a war just to be back with the people she loves most and I don't blame her(She makes some very good points). Strong found family vibes and "touch them and die" but in a familial way.

I can't even begin on how many loveable characters there were in this book... J.J. Kang has some great character synopsis on her IG that you should check out to get more detail. Favorite MC was obviously Ari but side character? I think I've gotta go with Orion, an automaton cat that's called a "spark" who is companions with Reagan (a child Ari and her partner, Kennex, saved from ritualistic sacrifice which started Ari's chase through the universe to reunite with Kennex).

I can't recommend this debut novel enough. Prepare yourself because you're in for a ride with this one.

This was great! Chef’s kiss! If you loved Arcane, you will LOVE Lost in the Light. The found family was amazingly built up. I have read plenty of slow-burn romances, but I did not know my heart was yearning for a slowburn family. The world-building is frak-ing impeccable and I really enjoyed watching everything unfold. I am begging for book two to be slipped my way!

I have been rendered speechless by this book!!

This book was nothing I expected it to be. It was phenomenal. And, I'm so mesmerized by the storyline, the characters, THE PLOT, the twists & turns, that I have my mind blown. 😩

The level of detailing putted into the storyline, the character arc and the way whole book unfolds is so damn good. It's ADDICTING, if to be described in one word.

I was literally so invested in the book that I forgot about my surroundings, I was in another dimension for real and I couldn't even began to express how much blissful I'm feeling at the moment.🤌🏻😭

I'm so in love with Ari and Reagan. While reading the book I literally felt like i was on the ship with all of them. 🥺

I'm still starving to see how the storyline develops further. And where their journey takes them and how further Ari's character development takes place. 🤌🏻✨️

Overall, the way whole world-building, and the way whole storyline is structured is so well-thought off & so well written. I'm so deeply in LOVE with this book. Dear Author, you have a fan here! Thank you for writing this beautiful piece of art. 🥰❤️

Thank you so much Beyond The Books PR for providing me the opportunity to ARC read this one of a kind book. I'm beyond grateful for it. ❤️✨️

A great book with characters I absolutely adored, especially Reagan and Ari! I flew through this book and couldn’t put it down, as each page was so gripping. It was a great sci-fi book with world building that was easy to understand and created a beautiful scene wherever the characters were. I was always wondering what would happen next and was in shock at the events in the last 100 pages. I cannot wait for the next book in the series which I will definitely be reading.

4.5 🌟

It took a few chapters for me to get into this book, but once it picked up for me I couldn't put it down. There are several grammatical errors throughout the book that I can't help but hyperfixate on, so those did take away from the experience a tiny bit for me, but I won't take away from the rating for those. I can say the storyline was so different than other books I have read so far. It was unique. The character building was done very well. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but near the end I was definitely feeling so many different emotions. I am interested to see if the next book in the series provides a redemption arc for certain characters because when I say I wanted to use the unusual weight of the physical book to cause physical harm to this character...

I've never written a review before, but hopefully, this is helpful for my fanfiction readers/tag-based readers. (no spoilers!)

Tags: Depictions of violence, hired assassin/criminals, morally grey characters (is it a crime if they had it coming/if you don't get caught?), Protective Found Family, Fluff/Domestic Bliss, mutual pining, minor character death(s)

Potential trigger warnings: child sacrifice/child harm (multiple instances of past trauma from MCs and depictions of violence present time to Reagan, the child sacrifice), kidnapping (forced and willing), substance/alcohol use, and forced drugging (one scene non-descriptive).

This is an advanced society story that is seeped in religious trauma and control. It's sci-fi but the storyline is more action/adventure-based and reads more like fantasy than sci-fi. There is some romance sprinkled in that had me giggling and highlighting lines from the mutual pining, but there is never intimacy beyond PG/YA standards. The characters that die tend to not stay dead... but there is a lot of violence, blood, and overall death painting this storyline. What I liked about this book is that Ari is a STRONG FMC and while her character development does soften a bit in regards to her found family, it is still hinged on her being a strong, powerful, assassin-based character. She is fiercely protective of those important to her and willingly throws herself into life-threatening situations to protect them, which is clear from the beginning and only increases in scope as she adds to her collection of important people. I think the world-building was a bit tricky in the beginning, especially with so many social, cultural, and religious structures, but I was able to pick it up on the way and draw parallels to keep track of everything. After finishing the book it all makes sense, and I don't think there is a way to have organized it differently to make more sense or lessen that barrier. While a map or chart could have maybe helped slightly, let's be honest, none of us actually read those in the beginning of a fantasy book. I am interested in seeing if there is a sequel in the works! It left in a good position for a second book, but it was not a true cliffhanger for those, like me, who hate steep cliff hangers at the end of a good story.

I read Lost in the Light again to write this review. But now I’m sitting here, fully spiraling, because I think I’m a little obsessed. Okay, maybe a lot.

The first time was for the story...fast, brutal, high-stakes, cosmic in scope. But the second time? It hit differently. I noticed the silences, the hesitations, the slow-burning heartbreak that lives in every scene.

Ari Barlow is a survivor. She’s lived by instinct, sharp edges, and survival skills honed in the chaos of the Port of Acheron...a place as far from Illyarium’s god-touched vision as you can get. When she and her grounded partner take a routine job, they expect credits. Maybe danger. Not a child. Not war.

That one choice...to protect a kid instead of walk away...sets the entire galaxy off-balance. She loses the person she trusts most. She gains a responsibility she never wanted. And suddenly, she’s public enemy number one…hunted by mortals, immortals, and the ghosts of her own past.

What follows is stunning: A desperate escape. A stolen ship. A crew of accidental allies. Gods in the sky, shadows in her mind, and a child whose life changes everything.

But what truly wrecked me? The quiet moments.
Ari sitting in silence while the stars spin. The way the child tucks into her side without asking. The almosts between enemies-turned-crew, trust earned in shared danger. And Ari’s war...not just with the universe, but with herself.

She is not a hero.
She doesn’t want to be.
But still, she chooses.

By the time I closed the last page, I wasn’t ready to let go. Now I’m just here, counting days until Discovered in the Dark drops. You bet I’ll be screaming about Lost in the Light again…But only when I’ve survived what comes next.

Get ready for a wild ride in space! This debut novel has it all - a motley crew of lovable misfits, a prophecy-ridden kid with a target on her back, and enough twists and betrayals to keep you guessing till the very end. Our fearless FMC is a total boss, and I am HERE. FOR. IT. The found family dynamic between the crew is everything - they're all a bit rough around the edges, but they've got heart.

What I loved most about this book is the way it balances humor, action, and heart. The author's writing is engaging, witty, and full of charm. The world-building is rich and immersive, with a complex plot that'll keep you on your toes. And that cliffhanger? I'm still reeling!

What really stood out to me was the FMC - she's got a rich history, a ton of sass, and a whole lot of determination. I loved watching her navigate the dangers of her world while staying true to herself. The supporting cast is equally well-developed, with complex characters that feel real and relatable.

And can we talk about how impressive this is as a debut novel? The author shows a mastery of storytelling, character development, and pacing that's truly impressive. I'm so excited to see what they do next!

If you're looking for a thrilling, funny, and heartwarming space fantasy with a dash of found family and adventure, this book is for you. Just be prepared for some serious emotional whiplash - this author knows how to tug at those heartstrings! Can't wait to start the next installment- i got the arc for that YAY!!!

I went into Lost in the Light expecting a straightforward sci-fi adventure, but I was absolutely blown away by the depth and emotional punch of this story! J.J. Kang masterfully blends the best elements of fantasy and science fiction, creating a unique world that feels both expansive and intimately personal.
The character of Ari Barlow is a standout. She's a morally gray, angry, and fiercely protective heroine, which I found incredibly compelling. Watching her character arc as she slowly lets her guard down and builds a "found family" with the young Reagan and the rest of the crew was a highlight of the book for me. The relationships, particularly the initial dynamic between Ari and her partner Kennex, felt incredibly real and emotional.
The plot is action-packed and the world-building is exceptional, even if it takes a little while to grasp all the social and religious structures of the Meridian System. The story dives right in, following Ari after she and Kennex intervene in a distress call that leaves them in the middle of a universal war against mortals and "gods". The twists were genuinely mind-blowing, and the overall pacing was fantastic, keeping me hooked from the very first sentence. It truly delivers a fresh take on the "chosen one" trope.
If you love found family, diverse characters, a slow-burn romance, and a badass female main character who is willing to take on gods to protect her own, you need to read this book. The ending wasn't a terrible cliffhanger, but it left me desperate for the sequel!

10/10 WOULD RECOMMEND!!

When I saw this book marketed as “The Last of Us”meets “Six of Crows” meets “Treasure Planet,” I knew I had to read it.

While some of the elements of each were present in the story, such as the family dynamic (Six of Cows), space/ other planet travel (Treasure Planet), dark monsters, and older/younger character dynamics (The Last of Us), I would say not to go into this book expecting it to pull TOO heavily from any of these.

This book begins by dumping A LOT of information about the world on the reader all at once, which made it difficult to get into.

One of the main things I struggled with while reading was the writing. Specifically, there were moments when the author would tell the reader things through action but then immediately follow up by "spelling out" the conclusions I had deduced from the action. This was unnecessary and happened so often that it made it increasingly difficult to stay in the flow of the story and took away from the overall reading experience.

Right now, I don't see myself continuing with the “Lost in the Light” series, and if, like me, you go into this book expecting more SOC and Treasure Planet influence, you may be left a little disappointed.

A BIG thank you to the author for providing me with an ACR copy of their book! <3

This was a definite 5 ⭐ read
The plot , the characters, the writing!!!! Had me hooked! I was up till 4 am reading because I just couldn't bring myself to stop.I finished the book within 24 hrs.
It very well written and you'll lose yourself in it

The writing!! It's so good that it feels like a movie is running in my mind while reading it. The descriptions and attention to details! It's a must read

I loved the concepts of friendship, found family in this book. Contrast of myths and tech,
The anticipation, betrayal, stolen moments in critical situations! Everything was just perfect

Ari and Kennex, the way they had each other 's backs, the bond they shared was just amazing! I was so heartbroken with the separation Can't wait to see how their story develops now

I adore Reagan and Orion! The character development Ari had after Reagan came into the picture was something I really liked!

Ulder is a big grumpy softie!

I loved all the characters and their backstories broke my heart

The banter between Ellis and Ari are a few of my fav moments and I really hope to see more of him.

Derrick! I personally loved him! Even though I was team Kennex initially, I jumped to team Derrick in a heartbeat. Those sweet stolen moments between Ari and Derrick! So freaking adorable! But the ending killed me

I can't wait to see how things continue now

Some books you read.
And then there are books that grab you by the heart, wreck your soul, and leave you staring at the last page like it personally betrayed you.
Lost in the Light did exactly that.

It’s been a long while since a story made me cry, not once but multiple times, and this one had me teary-eyed, breathless, and clutching the book like it could comfort me back. The emotions hit hard and without warning, but every single one felt earned. I wasn’t just reading, I was feeling.

Ari Barlow? I don’t think I’ll ever stop thinking about her. She’s sharp-edged and emotionally messy in the best way. Loyal, furious, and absolutely unstoppable when it comes to protecting the people she calls family. Her rage, her grief, her love… it’s all so raw. She’s not just a character; she’s a force of nature.

And don’t get me started on the side characters. The found family energy in this book is insane. Orion, the spark cat, stole my heart (and several scenes). Reagan is the kind of child character who doesn’t feel like a plot device but a real, beating heart in the story. And Kennex… oh, Kennex.

This is a debut? I’m honestly in awe. The writing is cinematic but deeply intimate, the pacing never drags, and the world feels alive in every corner. I finished this book and immediately wanted to go back, just to relive the hurt and the hope.

unexpectedly loved

This story is everything you need minus the cliffhanger. I want to put that out there. There’s love and loss, questions, betrayal, found family and more. I def rec this book and need more myself!

Ari- our main girl, so much growth, so much she goes through in this book. I feel like yes ken was her bestie but maybe he wasn’t what she always needed, or maybe he was. Reagan came into her life at the right time b/c they need each other & taught each other.
Ken- I like him but the whole ascendant thing has me questioning his existence right now
Reagan- that little girl stole my heart! Her beginning story is a sad one. Her character growth was amazing. Her and Ari being what. Each other needed was everything.
Orion- I love this animal bot!! The banter he has with Ari and the protectiveness with Regan. I just love him. He was a perfect character.
Derrik- at first Ari made it seem like we weren’t going to like him. Then he grew on me because he gave himself to her. He fell for her. Then he did something bad & went Casper and I want her to find him but I also feel like he knows more than he lets on
Ellis- I thought this one would be a love interest but honestly he could be Ari’s bestie. He’s loyal and will actually do the right thing. Hate to see him go but I hope to see him again
Uldrel- big brother energy. We love him.

About the book:

Ari Barlow thrives on instinct—a necessity in the Port of Acheron, the crime capital of the Meridian System. Once a hub of divine ambition, the Port has devolved into chaos, perfectly suiting Ari's life as a mercenary. Alongside her pragmatic partner, she takes any job for the right price.

When a routine mission leads to the discovery of a child in danger, their choice to intervene triggers a galaxy-spanning conflict. Separated from her partner and left with the mysterious child, Ari is thrust into a deadly game against mortals and gods. With a crew of unlikely allies, she must fight to survive, all while confronting the dark monster lurking within her.

My Views:

This book was an absolute thrill from start to finish! I loved Ari’s character so much!!! so full of personality and depth that I couldn’t help but get attached to. The story had me hooked, and I found myself quickly turning through the chapters, eager to see what would happen next.
The world-building was exceptional… unique yet easy to follow, with each new setting vividly brought to life. I loved how seamlessly the sci-fi elements blended into the plot, making the universe feel so amazing.

I can’t wait for the next book ♥️

Lost in the Light
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫(4.5)

This book reminded me of how much I love a fantasy world. I am in awe and absolutely enamored by JJ Kangs writing. This was written so well, the descriptors allowed me to imagine everything in my brain and I absolutely love when I can envision things from a book. (I think having good descriptors is so needed in fantasy novels)

This whole journey was so bitter sweet. I love it. I love Orion so much ( Orion made me wish toothless could talk though) I genuinely enjoyed every character in this, Ari, Uldrel, Ellis, Derrick, Reagan, etc. the banters, the relationships that builded into something lovely, connections that were needed, Ari and Reagan’s bond, the tension, etc. I just honestly loved them all and I had nothing bad to say about anyone involved in the journey that this book was on.

This was so action packed, emotional, beautiful and well done storyline. I just absolutely devoured this and I don’t know why I waited so long to pick it up, but I picked it up at the perfect time and now I can’t wait to read some more fantasy books since this sparked my love for it again since I was in a bit of a slump.

This debut novel by J.J. Kang is something truly special and different from any other sci-fi book I’ve come across! It’s an exciting mix of action, a sprinkle of magic, and a hint of closed-door romance that keeps you guessing. Every twist and turn in the plot is a delightful surprise that hooks you right from the start!

You'll absolutely fall in love with the main character, Ari. As you get to know her more throughout the story, your admiration just keeps growing. She’s tough, selfless, and genuinely cares for the people in her life. Her journey is all about growth and self-discovery, with beautiful themes of friendship and family coming into play.

The world-building and writing are really impressive, especially for a debut! The story flows effortlessly, balancing thrilling action with heartfelt moments, and the characters are wonderfully relatable. It’s a rare treat to find a sci-fi book that feels both fresh and familiar, and this one hits that perfect balance.

I can't recommend this book enough to fellow sci-fi fans who are on the lookout for something unique and engaging. If you love strong characters, magic, and surprising twists, then you’ll definitely want to add this novel to your reading list! Happy reading!

First of all thankyou so much @beyondthebookspr
For sending me this ARC!! I can’t thank you enough for this amazing opportunity 😭🌸
Secondly can we all give @authorjayjaykang ,A standing ovation because this book deserves every single of it✨

This book was my first ever sci-fi and I’m so happy to tell you guys that I loved every bit of it, rather it be the tension between Ari and Kennex , be it their chemistry ( which was like to die for😭😭💗).

This book was amazing and I had my jaw hit the floor moments so many times I kid you not.😭😭

Being a romance reader and reading this genre for the first time , I thought it would be difficult to understand the story but trust me guys when I say I’m glad that I got to read this book as my first sci fi novel because the world building in this was way to smooth and easy to grab!!!✨

And of course as a wise man say a good book will always make u cry and yes I cried a little ( not so little 😭) while reading this book.

Honestly, do not sleep on this book! I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of reading this sci-fi. I got a lot of Firefly vibes, which is probably why I enjoyed it so much as I love that show. The sarcastic commentary between the characters was one of my favorite things about the dialog, especially from the FMC Ari. Ari as an FMC is amazing. She's a bit rough around the edges and has gone through some hard knocks, but at her core, she's incredibly caring and giving. Without spoiling too much, there's a lot of action, an amazing world build, a little bit of romance, some twists you expect, others you don't, and some you didn't want to happen. Overall, if you're looking for a sci-fi book to read that is well written or just loved Firefly a lot and want something that reminds you of it. I would definitely recommend giving this book a read.

A friend let me borrow an ARC copy of this book after falling in love with the story, sure that I would enjoy it.

I absolutely did! I’ll be buying it on release day and following along closely to grab the sequels.

J.J. Kang crafted a gritty space opera with a lot of heart, & embraced both sci-fi and fantasy in equal measure. The rugged-rogue MC—the tough-as-nails Ari—and a charming found-family cast of supporting characters take on a quest bigger than they bargained for, against all odds, in an epic journey through a lovingly crafted universe. I was hooked from the beginning and just couldn’t put the book down.

It really ticks all the boxes for me, & I’d love to have the next one in my hands already.
