A sobering and emotionally charged account of one of South Africa’s most heartbreaking and public love stories.
What stood out most for me was the depth of research that has gone into this book. Ferguson clearly takes care to gather, verify, and contextualise information, and this lends the narrative credibility and weight. I appreciated the way she frames the story, not as sensationalism, but as a cautionary exploration of love, power, vulnerability, and the devastating consequences when relationships turn destructive.
The book is a quick and accessible read, written in a clear, engaging style. At times, it can feel a little repetitive, particularly where certain details or themes are reiterated, but this does not detract significantly from the overall impact. The writing remains strong, compassionate, and measured throughout.
Ultimately, this is a well-written and thought-provoking book that invites reflection on intimate partner violence, public narratives, and the human cost behind headlines. A difficult but important read.
