Only seniors in high school, Rayne and her friends fight to stop the invasion of Earth by ancient, merciless beings hell-bent on enslaving humanity for compatible blood. They spent the last four years training to fight Nox, ruler of the invading race. His desire for vengeance against the planet that denied his ambitions is as great as his thirst for Rayne. Rayne and her friends must defeat the King of Cinder. If they can turn the tide and send the first invasion force back to where it came, the world may never know how close it came to annihilation. If they fail, Nox will cast the world in the shadow of his revenge.

This is a fun read. Rayne is a great heroine in the sense that she isn’t perfect but literally never gives up. How many times you have to root for her and her friends, keeps you engaged until the end. There is a lot of wit and a plethora of unique characters. It was interesting to watch the dynamics between good and evil as well. Sometimes the lines blurred and then you’d wonder which side the characters were on. Only to be brought quickly back to right versus wrong. The twists kept me from getting bored. By the end, you definitely wanted to see Rayne pull off a win.
The Icari are coming to take over the human race, but the question is when. Rayne and her crew begin training, and end up training for years, to fight these aliens. They are trained by Xelan, who is one of the aliens.
I thought this book had an interesting premise, and many of the battle scenes were well written; however, I was not a fan of the way the romance was thrown in. It seemed awkward and didn't quite fit with the rest of the story in my opinion.
While not my usual reading fare, I can appreciate the insane level of imagination that has gone into building this world and the world of Cinder and its people. I'm a sucker for incarnation as well so that suited me perfectly. A bit too much romance for my taste, particularly while the world is crashing down around everyone, but that's a personal preference. If you love sci-fi, complex relationships and quick paced action, Last of Daylight is for you!
Wow, what a wild ride! Science fiction, romance, drama, action: this story has so much to offer. The world building is amazing. The characters have depth and feel relatable. The plot is full of some expected tropes but also fun twists. It was exciting to follow The Progeny in their daily lives and issues, but getting the POVs of the Icari as well was a wonderful bonus. I love seeing the good and evil in every character. Great read, highly recommend!
