Hockey Bois is a closed door romance...so why not open the door? Read some of the "missing" scenes that happened along Nick and Brady's journey from teammates to boyfriends.
Ashley, pen name A.L. Heard, fandom name jhoom, is a 34 year old teacher, writer, and mother of two little boys. She’s been writing fanworks since she discovered ff.net back in her middle school days; the platform has changed and the writing’s improved, but Ashley ultimately still spends her free time writing about characters she adores in worlds she’d like to explore. Her first novel, Hockey Bois, was published in 2021. In between writing projects, she works as a language teacher in the Pittsburgh area, plays hockey, and plays trains with her sons.
Dnf 34% no rating. I read this alongside Hockey Bois for a while, hoping I'd get a better insight in the MC's relationship dynamics (which I SHOULDN'T NEED to search for in an additional book in the first place!!). I had to stop, though, because it felt anticlimactic/cringey reading how Brady had gotten a character transplant during sex. In the main book we got a silent, grumpy and emotionally repressed Brady, and here NOT.
So this is a great example of how steam in a book can actually further our understanding of character development and relationship dynamics. Because I think I really understand them better and love them more now, especially Brady. AND WE FINALLY LEARN WHAT HIS JOB IS!!! I would have loved to have some of those scenes in the book, as they were full of everything that was lacking before imo - loads of sappy emotions from Brady, more communication, more background, more scenes just with the two of them having pillow talks, just… more! So yeah, this novella did in fact add a ton to the main book, I’m happy now 🥰
“Fourth of July. I was watching you catch fireflies and give them to Mags’s nieces and nephews. One landed in your hair and lit up, and you were the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen. I was scared to death of what it meant, but I knew if there was anyone out there I could love, it’d be you. Didn’t really let myself feel it until I was driving back home after Thanksgiving, though. It’d been good to be back, but for the first time in my whole life…it didn’t feel like home. I was going home because I was going to you.”😭😭😭
It was nice to get the "missing scenes" from Hockey Bois, especially the crucial first scenes where they hook up. However, some of the other chapters felt a bit gratuitous and a bit out of character. Don't get me wrong - I love smut as much as the next reader. But it felt a bit like fan fic rather than works written by the original author since they didn't fit the tone and characters of the original work.
I was so sad to find out (while reading) that Hockey Bois was a close door romance. Was so happy to find out the author had created this! I had to reread Hockey Bois again while slotting in this and Brady’s story. Was fun reading them all in the correct order but kind of wish I read these the first time round rather than on a reread. Didn’t hit the same.
This was great! These scenes would have really improved the book, imo. You get a lot more character depth, understand Brady better, and also just see more of their emotional connection and communication. Even if it was all Nick POV, like in the original book, this would have added so much to their story, not only the spice. (And! The spice is good!)
This was so nice!! I think there was still some moments where the author's writing was not helping to picture the actions or seemed a bit off for the scene.
I would highly recommend reading this after Hockey Bois because the smut scenes are a great way to show care and the love already bubbling between the two characters which I felt was a bit lacking in the original work.
