It is a sad fact that the world is awash in political tyrants.
So is human history.
Ira Chaleff, an expert in political followership and one of the 100 “Best Minds in Leadership” (Leadership Excellence magazine) reveals how political followers can make or “brake” toxic leaders and what we can do—no matter our level of political influence or where we sit on the political spectrum—to support beneficial leaders and stop the rise of would-be tyrants.
Political tyrants are one of the most destructive forces in the world, perpetrating mass oppression, suffering, war, and genocide. Unfortunately, we are no closer to eliminating this scourge of human political organization than we have ever been.
Wherever you are on the political spectrum, you may have growing—even alarming—concerns about the potential impact of destructive political leaders on your country and those you love. You see increasing attempts by these leaders to use the power of the media and government to control the citizenry, enrich their cronies, turn ordinary people against each other, and weaken the checks and balances on which democracies depend. At the same time, you may feel despair about your ability to make a difference on the course of events, or feel unsure of how to take a stand.
Ira Chaleff, with his long and deep exposure to leadership and followership at high levels of government service, and his extensive research into abuses of power, shows us that we, too, have power—and maybe more than we think. But it must be used in timely and politically savvy ways.
Chaleff unpacks the choices for action available to us depending on our circle of influence in relation to political leaders whom we support or oppose. He explores the pressures found in each of these circles and identifies windows of opportunity for interrupting a progression from governance to tyrannical rule. Chaleff reveals the follower’s ability to make a tangible difference in preventing the rise and consolidation of power of toxic political leaders. He offers his readers a sense of real personal agency in place of feelings of helplessness and anxiety.
Building on the success of his award-winning books, The Courageous Follower and Intelligent Disobedience, Chaleff’s timely new book provides a mirror, a map, and guideposts for looking at ourselves and our ability to create better political leadership that we crave for our communities and our nation.
Ira Chaleff is an author, speaker, workshop presenter and innovative thinker on the beneficial use of power between those who are leading and those who are following in any given situation.
Ira’s latest book, Intelligent Disobedience: Doing Right When What You're Told to Do Is Wrong, is once again breaking new ground by exploring the deep cultural roots of obedience and how to equip individuals of all ages to resist inappropriate orders and find better ways and ethical means of achieving legitimate goals.

I read To Stop a Tyrant (an ARC) hoping for some help. Since I am a member of the circle furthest from the seat of political power (the populace) and not a bureaucrat and since I don’t do well in hierarchies, the advice pertaining to me was minimal. I learned that it is best to organize and talk in small groups about what is true and what is not in group messages.
This book starts with an overview of tyrants. Most of the information felt old, as we are currently beyond the slow rise to “prototyrant” (he who will become a tyrant if elected) phase here in the USA, but the overview is still helpful. And this book may be particularly helpful to those who work in bureaucracy or hierarchies—in or out of government. There is specific advice about how to be heard in meetings, etc. And sections on Activists, Bureaucrats, Elites, and Confidants can certainly help people in those positions. (Again, not me, so I skimmed or skipped these chapters, often simply glancing at the titles—familiar categories that I assume most of us are aware of.)
While I’m grateful to have received an advance copy of this book, I don’t think I’m really its audience. But I wish the author well with it.
A timely and critical guide to help us restore political sanity
Ira Chaleff, author of “The Courageous Follower: Standing Up to and for Our Leaders” and “Intelligent Disobedience: Doing Right When What You're Told to Do Is Wrong” has now written a book that, given today’s political landscape (aka circus) could not be more timely, or more important.
His book, “To Stop a Tyrant: The Power of Political Followers to Make or Brake (as in slow the speed of) a Toxic Leader” analyzes what can turn even an initially benign political leader into a tyrant, and more importantly, what we can do to head them off at the pass.
In crystal clear language, Mr. Chaleff navigates and relays his deep-dive research into the maze of today’s crazy politics and invites us all to stay better informed and more engaged as (whether we like it or not) affected citizens. It is clear that this is not the time to lean back on a comfortable and hopeful: “Nothing to do with me.”
George Santayana once warned us that “Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it.” Note the word condemned, for keeping several egregious 20th-century dictators in mind, we are moving far too close to that catastrophic edge for comfort.
This is the time for us to stand up for democracy, whether a member of the public, a political activist, a government employee, a member of the social elite, or a political insider/confidant. In his book, Mr. Chaleff—addressing and appealing to our innate ethical values—shows us how we can help put the brakes on a proto-tyrannical leader’s power ambitions to instead act according to those values.
For yourself, your family, and friends, and for this country: read and take this book to heart.
Mr. Chaleff lays the groundwork to identify and deflect or stop a burgeoning proto-tyrant in any organization. The essence is that it is WE, the followers, who make or break a tyrant. It is also the WE, across all social and economic status levels, that need to clearly understand and then collaborate to achieve the rights that proto-tyrants will take from us!
Where are we in relation to our political leaders (not just national but also school board, city, etc)? What responsibility do we have to prevent them from becoming tyrannical? Do we have the courage to change their course?
