Alice and James are a pair not meant to even know one another. Alice is an outsider, an undesirable who’s only relationship with James should be as his janitor. James is the complete opposite. Having passed The Exam at age ten, he’s been trained and placed in a respected career. He shouldn’t be able to even take notice of Alice’s existence, made to forget any notions of life beyond work.
Despite this chasm, the two unexpectedly begin to interact, first by chance, then by design. A relationship buds, clandestine meetings becoming riskier and riskier. The two plunge forward despite the risk, assuming the worst that could happen is reassignment or some prison time, entirely unaware of the movement taking place behind the scenes. Led by one person, hundreds of outsiders are doing just what Alice did, only with a much more nefarious intent, and the Summit isn’t happy about it. Alice and James couldn’t care less about taking down the system. They just want out.
