Audrey Benton fell in love with her brother's best friend Fletcher Fernley when she was eleven. Separated for eight years with finishing school, Audrey returns for her first season with the hope of Fletcher returning her affections. But her brother's comment about her future discourages Fletcher, he focuses on his career as a barrister and puts thoughts of marriage away. On her fifth season, Audrey's father gives her an ultimatum. She has one more season to capture Fletcher's heart.

Light fluffy and clean romance set primarily in London during the debutante season. Audrey Benton has been quietly waiting for childhood friend Fletcher Fernley to see her as more than a little sister. Fletcher, a barrister, though interested years ago thought Audrey is set to wed a man with a title. It’s now 1814 and this is Audrey‘s fifth season and her father has decided she must either wed by the end of this season or earn a living. Furthermore, her younger sister Mariah is to have her debut this season. Enlisting the help of her older brother Andrew and younger sister Mariah, Audrey is determined to give Fletcher his final chance.
The longer I sit with this book, the more flaws with the overall plot become apparent. Even without the miscommunication trope, this friends to lovers romance stretches credulity. The reason for the father trying to marry all his children remains unclear. There is no real financial crisis, as Audrey was at finishing school for quite a few more years than normal and no mention of need to sell property or effects of war. So I presume this was to generate conflict for the plot. In addition, Audrey had the entire season to further woo, an abnormally dense barrister. Yet the conflict is increased with the need to marry by the time the debutantes are presented to Queen Charlotte. And the contortions that Audrey has to enact to attract Fletcher, only to be noticed for how she smells and the colour of her eyes. No, she is a smart articulate and thoughtful woman. And though Fletcher is honorable, am sir, why is your spine and gumption.
The high of this book is the sibling connection: both Benton and Fernleys. Andrew, Mariah even the brief glimpses of Baxter and Fletcher was enough to make this tolerable. And the epilogue was more interesting than all the contortions that preceded. Maybe, the book should have focused on the issues that were briefly mentioned there. Now, that would be a more nuanced read.

The Barrister and the Wallflower is my first book from this author. I enjoyed how while Audrey was trying to win Fletcher, her personality grew and blossomed. But I believe it was her true self shining through. I loved the plotting between Audrey and her siblings to get Fletcher to notice her and not just as a “little sister of his friend”. As much as a I loved reading Fletcher and Audrey’s story, Andrew stole the show for me. As did Fletcher’s family, especially Baxter and Gigi. I ached for Audrey at times when frustrating circumstances came but the end result was worth waiting for! I am excited to read the other books in the series and more from this author.

Audrey has been love with Fletcher since she was a little girl. Fletcher is a solicitor who somehow can't see the evidence before his very eyes.
Though I really did enjoy reading this book, I have to say, Fletcher annoyed the rocks out of me some times. Not for having second thoughts or doubting, but for the way he treated Audrey even after it was damn obvious that she crushed on him. Like dude, be gentle!!!!
My favorite part was definitely the bond between Audrey and her siblings.
Also, can we get a book about Audrey's brother pleaseeeeeeeeeee!!!

While at first I found the role of her father rather harsh, I still liked him because life isn’t as simple as we want or try to make it out to be. Some people I know love in just the same way, which can be seen as cold and unfeeling.
The heroine found strength through the whole story, I loved that she developed as an individual.
The story didn’t have much action or tension but I still enjoyed the book. 5 star rating would include more witticism, and a little more drive and action.

I’m not completely heartless, and while this book made me rage at how dense both Audrey and Fletcher were, I was a puddle of mush by the end because they’re adorable together.
That being said, I think my Fernley Family journey ends here. This was the book I was most excited to read, but the previous ones didn’t wow me and it felt like I was slogging through each one just so I knew who all the characters were when I finally got to this book. It’s not the series for me, but I’m glad I at least enjoyed one of the five I read.

1802 and 14 years onward. Took place in Yorkshire
and London. The pace was slow to start & then picked
up. Kisses-only. A nice little romance but it did not re-
invent the romance wheel. Gave this 3 stars.
Fletcher & Andrew were Yorkshire friends who attended
Harrow & Cambridge together. And as kids they allowed
Andrew's sis Audrey to play with them. Fletcher even built
a swing for her.
14 yrs on. Audrey had graduated from finishing school.
Why couldn't Fletcher see the lady she'd become?
He was a dedicated barrister. Audrey's sire made her
feel a burden after his expenses for her 4 unsuccessful
seasons. He gave her an ultimatum. Or she'd be stuck
w/ the suitor he chose. Father later apologized.
Fletcher, Andrew, Audrey & sister Maria spent time to-
gether in London. Fletch waited almost too late to
acknowledge his love for Audrey. Andrew seemed the
perfect big brother.

Her love is for eternity and patient. He is a little slow on the uptake and didn’t think he was worthy. Faint heart never won fair lady but thank goodness for wonderfully supportive siblings.

I wanted to love this story, but the relationship between Audrey and Fletcher was too unhealthy.
My favorite part of the novel was the close bond between the siblings. Additionally, the writing style was clear, and I could tell the author had done some research into the historical aspects of the book.
However, I was not rooting for Audrey and Fletcher to marry. Audrey repeatedly resorts to deception to win Fletcher's heart, and her brother willingly deceives his best friend. Instead of being herself, the self she would undoubtedly reveal during marriage, Audrey follows her brother's advice as Andrew guides her on how to be more "alluring" and "stunning." (Maybe I'm just a curmudgeon, but I felt weirded out by a brother talking about his sister that way.) Meanwhile, Fletcher only becomes romantically interested in Audrey when he notices her shallowest attractions (she looks and smells nice) and because he is jealous that she could marry another man. He is also transfixed when she disagrees with him (except she's lying again; she actually agrees with him), but in another conversation, he tells her women shouldn't have their own opinions on politics because ladies have a "weak constitution." None of those things make a strong foundation for a healthy marriage.
There were also some inconsistencies and errors in the book. Furthermore, the rushed ending and Fletcher's repeated injuries for comedic effect were not to my personal taste. I definitely would have overlooked those minor issues if not for the bigger problems in Audrey and Fletcher's burgeoning relationship.
Of course, everyone makes mistakes. Everyone has to change and grow, and that's part of what makes fiction (and life) interesting! The last 10% of the book redeemed it somewhat; Audrey admitted briefly once that it was wrong to deceive Fletcher. I would have liked to see a fuller character development arc, though; the ending felt too rushed to me. There were also some errors and inconsistencies, but those were minor.
I'm so sorry to be harsh, but I have to be honest. I would probably love Angela Johnson's other stories; she's a good writer. This book just wasn't for me.

Oh Audrey! We catch glimpses of your love for Fletcher early on (read the other books in this series) and it's sweet, hopeful even. Your love for his family and they you. You're brave to wait for your happily ever after. Then, life happens and the happiness you experience, the scheming and flirting, the tears I cried with and for you as your story moves forward. 😍

Audrey has loved Fletcher for a long time. She once hung around her brother and his group of friends, of whom Fletcher was one. Now that she's grown into a young woman, would Fletcher ever notice her as more than a childhood friend? Audrey is determined to make it so! As the years have passed, Fletcher seemed to be the only one amongst Audrey's family and friends who still hadn't realized her feelings for him went deeper than friendship. Meanwhile, Fletcher felt he did not measure up to Audrey's family's standards because he was not titled. Audrey's father had worked for years on a marriage arrangement between Audrey and her cousin, Viscount Darling. However, Audrey knows she wants to marry for love, and Fletcher is the only man for her. When Fletcher discovers several of Lord Darling's nefarious secrets and demands on the marriage contract, he's desperate to rescue Audrey once more. Will he do so in time? And what about his growing affection for her--How will it affect the plans he'd made for his life? Audrey's determination and efforts to have Fletcher as a husband were heartwarming. What will she try next to gain his love? Fletcher's several attempts to rescue Audrey were heroic, but will he be too late for the most important rescue of her life? As Audrey makes 1 final effort to escape an undesirable marriage, her strength and tenacity warmed my heart. Never more did a couple deserve each other! I highly recommend this clean Regency romance.

This is Angela Johnson's best book yet! I absolutely loved The Barrister and the Wallflower. Her writing gains finesse with each book, and her characters feel increasingly well developed. I will definitely be returning to her books in future!
Friends to lovers is my favorite romance trope, and Johnson executed it beautifully in this case. I enjoyed how authentic Audrey and Fletcher's friendship was throughout -- solid friendships just make for such good romance! I loved experiencing Fletcher's total emotional upheaval alongside him; Johnson wrote it so convincingly! I love the description Audrey gives her sister to explain why she is in love -- "He makes me want to be my best self without ever making me feel less for who I am." Best line, and it so perfectly describes exactly what real, healthy love is!
I loved Johnson's slight reference to Jane Austen's works (specifically Persuasion) with the description of Audrey feeling, "half agony, half hope." It's just subtle enough to make you feel smart when you find the reference, and bold enough to make her writing feel comfortably familiar.
Overall, Johnson is writing lovely regency romances that are clean and compelling; I love the escape from everyday life when I read her work. The Barrister and the Wallflower pulled me in from the beginning and I was constantly sneaking moments to get just a little more of the story in!

I loved absolutely everything about this book! I only read the previous book, and I thought that one was fantastic, but this one was even better! I don’t even know how that happened. I haven’t even read the first three in the series, so I cannot even imagine how great those are because if it’s anything like the two I’ve read, then I’m going to love them.
I have to say I do love Baxter already and I haven’t even read his story. The moment that Audrey whispered into his ear that she was going to marry his brother was adorable, and the fact that he didn’t laugh at her was just so sweet. My heart just melted. Even as she got older, and he knew how much she still love Fletcher, he always tried to encourage his brother to see her as more than just a little girl.
Speaking of brothers, I adored Andrew. He was such a loving and supporting brother. I can’t imagine living back then, and then having your life dictated by a man. The fact that he told his father that Audrey would be no bother if he had to take care of her was heartwarming. I thought it was sweet that Andrew and Maria were willing to put aside their own desires to make sure that Audrey won the heart of Fletcher.
There were a lot of humorous situations in this story, especially as the three tried to plot ways of getting Fletcher to see Audrey as more than just a little girl, but someone to have as a wife.
If you are a fan of Jane Austen’s books then you will love this series. It’s very wholesome without any profanity.

This is book 5 in the Fernley Family Series by Angela Johnson and each one gets better and better. The stories of the Fernley brothers have lots of undecided moments in their lives, lots of self doubts, lots of confusion over the ones they love or who love them but thankfully they finally come to their senses and go all out to win the women they are in love with. This particular one is made extra special because these two, Miss Audrey Benton and Fletcher Fernley, have been childhood friends only to be separated when she was forced off to finishing school at the age of twelve. This is the story of how Audrey with the help of her two siblings finally gets Fletcher to see her as more than the childhood friend he’s so very fond of before it’s too late and she’s forced into an arranged marriage. The characters are so delightful, realistic and humorous as they banter along with each other. The scenes when Fletcher finally realizes that Audrey is no longer the little girl next door brought a chuckle out of me. He was truly confused by it all. Great book! Great series by a great author!

This delightful little regency novel follows the fifth season of Audrey Benton. She has been given the ultimatum by her father that she must find a husband or risk losing her inheritance and become a governess. The author Angela Johnson handles the tension of the story neatly with walks in the park, horseback riding, glittering balls, and museum outings. Her deft hand at creating a perfect Regency world with dresses and bonnets is also balanced with Audrey’s sass and intelligence and knowledge of politics and books. The novel is a fun and easy read without succumbing to overly ponderous descriptions or side plots giving it a light Austen-y feel. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This is the fifth book in the Fernley Family series. Fletcher and Audrey have known each other since they were children. Fletcher is her brother's best friend and she has been in love with him since she was eleven. Now all grown up and ready for her first season, she has her heart set on catching Fletcher's eye and him returning her affections. But Fletcher is focused on his career as a barrister and has yet to see her as more than just a little girl and realize how she truly feels for him. He may lose his chance, though, when she is forced into an arranged marriage. He will need to realize his own feelings for her before he runs out of time.
A lovely story with plenty of humorous moments where Audrey is trying to catch Fletcher's attention. I loved how Audrey's siblings plotted with her to get Fletcher to notice her. They had such a strong bond, it was beautiful to see. The writing was well done, pulling me in from the very start and holding my interest till the very end. The characters were well-defined and absolutely wonderful and I was immediately endeared to them. And the banter between the characters was so much fun to read. An absolutely delightful story!

Fletcher is the second son of Earl Grafton, and with no likelihood of a title, he studies to become a Barrister, with rooms in London.
Audrey’s younger sister Maria is making her debut in town, and their father agrees to allow Audrey one more season to find a husband before she ends up a Spinster.
Together with her brother Andrew and Maria, the three siblings plot to turn Fletcher’s head and make him fall in love with Audrey.
This is another great instalment in the Fernley Family series, with lots of highs and lows along the way, with some tears from me, after reading a very poignant letter from Audrey to Fletcher.
I was captivated by the storyline, which was very well written, as always, with believable characters and situations. I stayed up very late to find out if Fletcher realised what he was missing before it was too late, and Audrey’s father got his wish.

Happy sigh! I LOVED this book.
Audrey has waited so long to find love with Fletcher. He is the only man she has ever wanted to love and we finally get to see this happen. I laughed, cried, swooned (ok, not really swooned) but I gave a sigh of happiness as I read quite often in this book.
Fletcher is a little blind, but also really respectful of Mr. Benton's wishes for his daughter. In the previous books I was constantly wondering why Fletcher wouldn't respond when his brother's would tease him about Audrey, but it is all revealed in this book. Mr. Benton's expectations, Fletcher's initial thoughts upon seeing Audrey when she returned from finishing school, and the love story! eek!
I loved that we got to see other sides to the London season in this book. Most Regency books take the reader to balls, parties, etc. But in this one we got to go to the Tower of London, picnicking, confectionery shop, it was just a little different for a Regency and I LOVED it.

Y’all I think Angela might have written one of the most delightful and yet painful unrequited love stories ever. I about wanted to give Fletcher a Gibbs head slap for his inability to see Audrey’s love for him. I did love how everyone tried to help him see it, including his family and best friend. But that guy was dense, haha! Everything turned out so beautifully by the end so I was pleased to see that. But you better be prepared to wait FOREVER to get that first kiss, y’all. It didn’t come early in the book, that’s for sure. Thankfully Angela made it epic so I was okay with it…sort of. Besides all this fun, there were some great conversations and witty banter. The Fernley’s crack me up with their teasing of each other as did the Benton’s. And, just FYI, I almost had to hate Mr Benton forever but he redeemed himself by the end of the story. Definitely grab your own copy of this marvelous story because I know you’re going to want to read it more than once, like me.

This is the first book by this author and for this series for me and I found it a charming story of Audrey and Fletcher, who grow up as neighbours. Audrey has always loved Fletcher Fernley and seen him as her future husband. Unfortunately, unknown to Audrey, her parents have plans to send her to finishing school for her to make a marriage with a titled gentleman, and specifically, her cousin Viscount Darling. After eight long years away, Audrey returns a beautiful, poised young woman on the cusp of marriage and Fletcher hearing that the family has big plans for Audrey's future, decides that as a as a second son, he will not be looked upon well so keeps his feelings for her secret.
Fortunately for Audrey, Fletcher discovers several of Lord Darling's nefarious secrets and demands on the marriage contract and is determined to rescue Audrey.
This was a lovely story with plenty of humour between the main characters that have you engaged along with them throughout the story. I will look out for the next book as I very much like this author's style of writing.

I have been excited for Audrey and Fletcher's story from the start of Johnson's Fernley Family series. Audrey is given an ultimatum by her father that is just the push she needs to help Fletcher see who she is to him. I love how her siblings come to her support in this effort to open Fletcher's eyes. It reminded me so much of the last couple Fernley books and how the Fernley siblings came to support of the brothers, which they did so for Fletcher in this story, the Benton siblings just had their own spin on it and were so entertaining together. The family bonds in this series are some of my favorite out there in books of this genre.
You've got a mix of she falls first, brother's best friend and childhood crush influences in this story. Audrey has always been there for Fletcher, always aware of his needs and frustrations, he just hasn't had is eyes open to that fact beyond his family circle. Through many different circumstances, some clumsy, some painful and others that will pull a laugh out of you, the reader gets to see how Fletcher opens his heart to the idea of something more than his career. And more importantly, he opens his heart to Audrey, the one he loves. It just takes some pushing and shoving along the way. Between the Benton and Fernley siblings, along with Gigi, he gets just the push he needs and right in time too.
Johnson keeps the story moving, interesting, entertaining and romantic. Another great addition to the Fernley Family series and as always, I am excited for more!

Audrey Benton had loved Fletcher Fernley since she was 12 years old. Now, at 24, and four seasons under her belt, she is faced with a difficult choice. If she doesn't receive and accept a marriage proposal this season, she will be cut off financially and will need to find a position as a governess, according to her father's mandate. He wanted a title for his oldest daughter but she just wanted to find love. She knew she only had love for Fletcher but he seemed to be clueless and only saw her as his a "little sister". Would Fletcher open his eyes before it was too late or was Audrey destined to live the life of a spinster?
There were times in the story that I wanted to throttled Fletcher for being so clueless but there is a happy ending. Audrey doesn't settle and steps away from the Wallflower persona and decides what she wants to be happy.
This is an author that was unfamiliar to me but I really enjoyed this story and the character development. The story was clean and wholesome and appropriate for the time period.

Audrey has been in love with Fletcher since she was a child. But he seems to still think of her as a child. Audrey decides to enlist the help of her siblings to make Fletcher see her as woman and a perfect match for him. With her father threatening for her make a match this season or else be a governess she is running out of time. But what if Fletcher has already noticed her but doesn’t think he is good enough? Will these friends become lovers?
Audrey and Fletcher are such great friends. Audrey is having some unrequited love and you feel bad for her as well as are cheering her on. Fletcher slowly starts to realize his feelings but when he does it is beautiful! I loved how Audrey’s siblings were so willing to help her gain Fletcher’s attention to be more than friends. Audrey is so tough to stick it out til the end. I really liked the interactions between Audrey and Fletcher. Overall a great story and I definitely recommend!

I have enjoyed the previous four books of the Fernley family and this one does not disappoint!
The author has created a detailed world with characters that are believable and it is delightful to see how they interact. I love to see characters from previous books. I find they are a richer characters for having read the prior books but each are stand alone books. Both the main characters and the supporting characters are well developed and interesting.
The main characters struggle to come together as they are fighting misconceptions. The hero is slow on the uptake and believes the heroine is destined for something more. The heroine has loved the hero and feels she must follow a hard choice to not be a burden.
I found the interaction and wit between the characters delightful and funny.
I look forward to reading the next “chapter “ in the Fernley series.

Audrey has been in love with Fletcher, her brother’s best friend, since childhood, waiting through four London seasons for him to notice and reciprocate. With her father forcing her hand, and the assistance of her siblings, Audrey determines to make a final attempt in her fifth season. When Audrey is pushed to marry elsewhere, Fletcher starts to realize that he may feel more than friendship for her. I enjoyed this story. There are some good historical details, and some small ones that needed to be researched better, but most readers won’t notice. I do find that I just haven’t been able to fully connect with the books in this series, including this one, but I have still liked them. Overall, I think that readers of clean historical romances will like this book. While this is part of a series about siblings, this can be read as a standalone. This is a sweet and clean story with no harsh language.

Well written, full of love, emotions, romance, friendship, families, society with lots of twists and turns. Audrey and Fletcher have been friends since childhood. As they each grow up and pursue different things in their lives, the feelings are still hidden there inside themselves. Fletcher becomes a solicitor while she is put on the marriage mart for 4 years refusing everyone. At the start of her 5th , she is informed that she needs to find someone or she will marry a man she dislikes. Andrew and Maria, her brother and sister, both agree to help her with Fletcher before her father agrees to the marriage contracts. She tries to have Fletcher ask for her hand but at a ball, she is put into a bad spot when it is announced that she is to marry Lord Darling. She runs as she doesn't agree to it. Fletcher will need to find her. So much action to read about. Enjoy. Would recommend to others.

Another stonking good read from the author of this series. The Fernley series goes from strength to strength and this features Fletcher Fernley. Audrey has been his neighbour for years and his best friend happens to be her brother Andrew. They have spent their youth in Yorkshire with an adoring Audrey trailing their footsteps.
She loves Fraser but he sees her as a sister! Fast forward to adulthood and Audrey still loves Fletcher and keeps hoping he will view her differently. The only answer is to persuade him that he feels the same as her.
This is a delightful story as we watch Fletcher realise he loves Audrey, it is a very cute tale. I really enjoyed the characters especially Andrew and Maria with their delightful interfering. I can heartily recommend The Barrister and the Wallflower. I anticipate the next book with bated breath…..

This is the first book I’ve read by Angela Johnson. I liked that it followed Audrey’s friendship with Fletcher since childhood, maturing into a tender yet mutually misunderstood romantic love. I also appreciated that she took Audrey and her readers to some unusual venues - a confectionery shop, the Tower of London, a conservatory, the British Museum, and a courtroom. A nice change from just balls and drawing rooms! But I felt frustrated at times with the characters’ lack of depth and insight into themselves and each other. The last chapter was a nice exception, although it and the epilogue were a bit saccharine at times. A pleasant book overall, but it didn’t leave me driven to read the rest of the series. Set-Up: In this story Audrey has been in love with Fletcher since they were children. She is now about to enter her fifth season in Regency era London when her father gives her an ultimatum. We follow her journey as she tries to attain her true love's heart instead of succumb to the loveless choices her father has set forth.
My Thoughts: I enjoyed this book. The relationship between Audrey and her siblings was wonderful. I loved that they were so quick to help her win the affection of the man she loved. Sweet and clean romances are right up my alley, as are regency, so this one was right in my lane. It was inspiring to see her step outside of her comfort zone and the ways in which Fletcher struggled and responded. It was a good book.
