Mr. Randall has the expertise to pull you into his stories using sensorial descriptions not only of his characters but also of the flora, fauna, hills, valleys, and rivers of the story. I thoroughly enjoyed this love story and the visit to Aix-in-Provence and France. Candy F. (A Reader)
I could not put this book down. Mr. Randall’s characters are very real and relatable, and his scenery descriptions are like imagining a well-done painting. The blending of history was fun, and the author melded it nicely and, at times, scarily into the story. It was well worth your time to retreat from our modern-day worries and experience another period in American and European history. Kathleen W. (A Reader)
From the author of the award-winning novel The Cherry Pickers comes the latest in Gregory C. Randall’s sagas about Chicago, the American Midwest, and the American family. Set in the waning days of the Great Depression (those few years before the start of World War II), this is a story of art, affection, longing, loss, and deliverance. “I was once beautiful, radiant, and full of the dreams of a future that held its arms wide for me,” Marie-ann said as she caressed the curly dark hair of the child on her lap. “The war came, and I was born. But that was a long time ago. That was when we lived in France, in the beautiful village of Aix-en-Provence. It was an evil time. The war kept us locked in our prison, a prison that I would gladly return to.” Marie-ann, daughter of Thomas and Monique Janus
In 1935 Chicago, a young artist, Thomas Janus, fell in love with his boss’s daughter, Monique Chastain, and surprisingly, she fell for him. Thus began a ten-year adventure that takes them from Chicago to Aix-en-Provence, France, and back. It is about their love, marriage, children, Nazis, and almost certain death (many times). Janus, somewhat lost and looking for a future, follows Monique to France, where she travels to be with her dead parent’s families before the start of World War II. Wars Amongst Lovers is a rich, international novel about love, family, and the brutality of war. It is a story of hope, forgiveness, salvation, loyalty, and the strength people need to survive.
It is the story of immigrants and those seeking better lives in America. It is about Depression refugees from the American heartland to the cities. Wars Amongst Lovers is a remarkable portrait of artistic expression, the American need for adventure, and the indomitable strength of one woman and one man to overcome all that is thrown in their path. It is about their bravery to save their family from some of the evilest men to live. It is also the story of their legacy and the families that came after them. Wars Amongst Lovers is a richly crafted novel with memorable characters, extraordinary landscapes, and a haunting story.
