Cast a spell for sunshine / Fluff my cobweb bed Feed my baby phoenix / Turn my black robe red
A cute, adorably whimsical story about a little witch and her TO-DO list throughout the day. With lovely rhyming melodies, I found myself singing through the book. Lovely puns and witchy things, alongside colourful illustrations gives a great spooky, Halloweeny yet playful look to this book Super fun and enjoyable
Gosh, how many books titled 'Little Witch' are there?
But this - as part of 'A Magical List Book' series - is one of the better ones.
The 'To-Do List' in question is played on the straight and narrow (except maybe when doing loop the loops on a broomstick), and there is nothing really subversive about it. There is no story, per se: Little Witch's long list of magical chores, activities and hobbies for the day is done and dusted with no obstacles; everything works out fine. It kind of sends the unfortunate message to children about not allowing flexibility, or contingency plans for the unpredictable in life. It's good to be organised and have plans - I'm borderline OCD about them myself - but in reality, rigidly sticking to following lists, rules and order doesn't always work out how you want them to. It's odd to see such rule-abiding in a kids' fantasy picture book with a witch protagonist who can do anything she wants - who has limitless potential.
Why not also teach how to cope when things don't work out? To allow for positive change? Learn to go off script and expand your horizons, reach your own magical potential, to better yourself as a person?
But 'Little Witch's To-Do List' is so cute, charming, magical and witchy otherwise, that I do not mind its somewhat unimaginative "story" and moral. It's a colourful, rhyming, melodic beat of a picture book about the day in the life of a witchling, and that's okay.
Its artwork is beyond charming - and that is the word that best describes the whole book. Its rhyming scheme is simple, creative and effective on each page. I can see it being an edutainment CD-ROM game.
There is a black cat, a witch hat, a witch robe, a owl, a baby phoenix, a dragon, a snake, bats in belfries, a wart hair (I like that Little Witch has spots on her face), potions, a green-slime shake, an invisibility spell, a mandrake garden, a toadstool cake, the moon, flying on a broomstick, talking to a mirror, cuddling with Mum, and Halloween goodness everywhere!
Maybe it doesn't matter that the titular Little Witch has no name?
'Little Witch's To-Do List' - a little bit of a shame its moral, intended or not, to children couldn't be as imaginative and free as its content, but it is still an adorable, colourful, wonderful and enchanting rhyming picture book read to pass the moonlit night at bedtime. It's no 'Kiki's Delivery Service' or 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' or even 'Pizza Witch', but it's sweet on its own.
At least it ends on a touching goodnight scene with Little Witch and her mum, where they read 'Little Witch's To-Do List' together (!?!) The 'Magical To-Do List' itself, shown at the end, is another cute addition.
'To-do lists are more than pure magic fun.
They help is keep track of what needs to get done!
What's on YOUR to-do list?'
I doubt anyone's to-do list is as fun, exciting, busy and magical as a witch's.
Helen Kemp Zax's LITTLE WITCH'S TO-DO LIST (A Magical List Book) is an absolute. delight. Young readers and listeners will enjoy finding out about her day - one task at a time. This fun story can serve as a time management tool for busy parents and guide youngsters to to create one of their own. The rhyming list is engaging and just might tire out even the busiest of kids. The best part? The bedtime hug! This book is perfect for Halloween read alouds. I love the beautifully spare text. I was granted an early Digital Review Copy so I did not get to hold the book and to experience the fun the secret flap at the end of the book. Highly recommended for home, school, and library collections.
This is wonderful! The To-Do List of a young witch as a picture book. The list and the excellent illustrations make it clear that, although adorable, she is committed to being an excellent witch, but not a "good witch".
I picked it up because it was by a local author. It really is a fun little read for all ages.
Of course, it seems perfect for reading with a child, something I'm not doing right now. The words rhyme, and the pictures are enchanting. There appears to be a moral at the end about the value of having a to-do list, and I suspect that having this little witch as an example might get children to try that.
Little Witch’s To-Do List is absolutely adorable! Helen Kemp Zax’s rhyming text sets out a little witch’s perfect day, from waking up to going to bed. “Cast a spell for sunshine. Fluff my cobweb bed. Feed my baby phoenix. Turn my black robe red.” And so, the little witch’s day speeds a long with fun and fantasy. Zax’s delightful rhymes are matched by Kirsten Eve Eagan’s equally delightful illustrations. Little Witch’s To-Do List is perfect for Halloween or for any day that needs a little extra magic.
OMG this is the sweetest story about a little witch and all the things she does throughout her day: “Cast a spell for sunshine/Fluff my cobweb bed/Feed my baby phoenix/Turn my black robe red….” Perfectly rhymed with an adorable twist ending (that I will NOT be giving away here!). The joyful and colorful illustrations perfectly complement the fun, upbeat text, adding additional layers to the storyline and tons of extra humor. And oh, the end-papers! Swoon! Great for Halloween, bedtime, or any time you are looking for an excuse to cuddle with the little ones in your life.
This book is absolutely enchanting! We learn so much about lovable Little Witch through the items on her to-do list, including feeding her baby phoenix, baking a toadstool cake, and planting a mandrake garden. A delightful read-aloud for Halloween and all year long. I highly recommend!
The title of this one immediately had me hooked, and the endpapers are SOOO spooky and cute. As a list person, I definitely appreciate all the little tasks that Little Witch goes through in a day. My favourite page was the flying lesson- illustrated very cutely with a loop and dangle. This book is perfect for anyone interested in magically zapping everything on their to-do list, and then taking a satisfying rest at the end.
As the title suggests, this charming picture book tells of a Little Witch completing tasks (casting spells, brewing potions, taking flying lessons and other fun witchy activities!) and checking them off her list. Little Witch’s To-Do List is my new favorite spooky season book for PreK-1st grade. I'm excited to share it in my speech-language groups next fall. The book is wonderfully rhymed and beautifully illustrated. Both the text and art provide many opportunities for engaging young children in discussions to promote listening comprehension. I'm excited to read the next book in the series, Little Bunny's To-Do List.
Told in engaging rhyme, this book follows Little Witch through her busy day. While some of her tasks will seem familiar, they all have a slightly witchy twist to them: "Brew a bee-wing potion/Drink a green-slime shake/Plant a mandrake garden/Bake a toadstool cake." Illustrations lean on the friendly, not scary, side, to help create a lovely, witchy world that kids will have fun envisioning. A page at the end invites readers to think about what's on THEIR to-do list.
