Through Waste-to-Energy (WtE) technology, plants use waste as a renewable fuel to co-produce electricity, heating, and cooling for urban utilization. This professional book presents the latest developments in WtE technologies and their global applications. The first part of the book covers thermal treatment technologies, including combustion, novel gasification, plasma gasification, and pyrolysis. It then examines 35 real-world WtE case studies from around the world, analyzing technical information behind planning, execution, goals, and national strategies. Results through the years show the benefits of the technology through the life cycle of the products. The book also examines financial and environmental aspects.
I really enjoyed reading the new 2nd edition of this book released in early-2025. It gives an overview of the Waste-to-Energy process and its importance in sustainable waste management. It talks about the waste management legislations, its role in energy policy and circular economy, the various WtE technologies, environmental impact of WtE, public opinion around WtE, etc. Apart from these, most of the book is dedicated to the global application of the technology. The author has visited many WtE plants across the globe, and have included detailed reports on the technologies, processes, capacities, CAPEX and many other data for all those plants in the form of site-visit reports and is really a very valuable collection of information. The new edition also has dedicated chapters on Waste-to-Hydrogen and CCUS in WtE which are very useful as well. This book could also be a helpful read for anybody involved in the development of 2nd generation SAF plants and could possibly understand some of the issues and challenges of MSW. As an estimator, I want to also highlight that this book has a dedicated chapter about a techno-economic tool for WtE investment evaluation that the author has developed, which I found helpful. Lastly, it is a very well written and an easy to read book with lots of information. I would recommend giving it a go!!
