Filming in Color

Jeannie awoke that morning when her agent Jack called with great news!

As a struggling young actress, Jeannie knew that some roles would push her limits and she was convinced that her professionalism would support her when that offer of a lifetime came knocking. Her agent’s news would test out her resolve.

Jeannie had yet to experience her first on-screen kiss but the role required far more than just kissing a man. The part required full nudity and included an explicit sexual encounter with an African American. Raised in a conservative environment that was prejudicial towards blacks, this would also be the challenge of a lifetime.

It occurred to him that perhaps, he might be a better writer of erotic fiction if he targeted his craft towards one person at a time, making love to one reader at a time. [ From I. M. Telling's story Simone and the Writer ]

"I am convinced that the mind is the most powerful sex organ in the body. I hope my stories generate stirrings within the reader, by being somewhat specific with the x-rated portions. Yet I mostly want my readers to make a journey of their own as they follow the changes happening inside the minds of my characters, who I consider to be my friends. I never judge nor fault my characters, as it is their journey and not mine." I. M Telling

Mr. Telling states "I prefer to evolve the characters within my tales, making their journey from where they start to where they reach by the last page as the reason for the story."

I.M. Telling lives in the southern United States, on the coast and has been a non-fiction writer for some time. He has always wanted to write erotica and is finally making that dream a reality. His writing includes everything from highly explicit erotica featuring interracial relationships, swinging, and cuckold tales to very sensual stories of bondage and examining the dynamics of open marriage. His wrting has also started to extend into other genres including adventure, humor, and stories with extreme violence.

Many of his writings take a tongue-in-cheek approach to the subject matter, often poking fun at stereotypes and purposely going over-the-top with subtle and dark humor, he often includes a twist ending.

My thanks to the author for providing a free copy of this short story for review.

The author seems to be a fellow Los Angeleno because of the descriptions of places that read like a local. Nothing like local color to make a story feel more immediate. Even a mention of Kate Mantilini (overpriced and not all that great foodwise, but that's just me LOL). There was also some questionable name-dropping of a famous actor which read a little amateurish.

This could have and frankly should have been a longer work, and perhaps written by someone who doesn't come from a frame of reference where the over-exotification of the black male body is the main selling point. That was the overall feeling I just couldn't shake, which is why the story felt somewhat uncomfortable. Like a few other authors who write interracial romances/erotica, I don't want to see the n-word in ANY permutation unless the knuckle-dragging neanderthal using it ends up repentant or dead. I do get why it was used in this instance, since the heroine's father was a total racist, but it's still cringe-worthy.

Yes, I get this is erotica (?) and supposedly expoloring a "forbidden" fantasy (I'm gritting my teeth as I write that word in relation to interracial relationships, even fictional ones), but this is the sort of story that feeds into that nonsensical "taboo" aspect which seems is a staple of mainstream porn.

The main character of Jeannie rang pretty hollow to me. Small-town girl with conservative parents, I get. But living in a city like L.A. and working in Hollywood (and if her parents were so conservative, I think they might have had issues with her living with her boyfriend), there's just NO WAY POSSIBLE she could not have come in contact with black actors or even black people in general. She's in the industry, so she chould have worked with black actors at some time in her fledgling career--even if she wasn't in a intimate scene with a black man. Also, considering that everyone wants to make it in Hollywood no matter what, her reticence would have been picked up by any savvy producer and that would have been the end of her chance.

Interestingly enough, I liked the character of James in spite of what felt like the author fetishizing him. Outside of the fact that in real life he wouldn't have behaved in so unprofessional a manner by having Jeannie take her clothes off and giving her a massage (knowing the media's penchant for scandal), he seemed like a character with some depth and I would have liked to know more about him. I liked the fact that he took his time to make Jeannie feel more comfortable with the idea of their on-screen intimacy, and that it didn't faze him about her father.

What didn't work was Jeannie's sudden "let's have sex" after her "OMG I can't do this", for the first part of the story. There was really no sense of any attraction, at least on James' part. He was merely portraying a role. Jeannie's attraction came off as immature rebellion against her father.

This type of interracial erotica is not for me. There is just too much in the way of race and gender fail for me to enjoy it. I prefer my interracial stories to be less about playing into stereotypes and more about mutual respect and just two people who happen to be of differing races getting together.

Filming In Color is a tale written from the woman's point of view in Mr. Telling's unique style and about his favorite subject of interracial couples. This one takes place in Hollywood when a young starlet, from the Deep South is asked to play a love scene with a black actor. The ending came with its unique twist of humor that makes Mr. Telling's tales so funny. Don't you just love those stories with the little twists at the end that leaves you laughing?

Filming in Color tells a Hollywood story about an actress from Georgia taking a part opposite a black man in a film. It is told in a humorous manner that reflects old-time Southern traditions and the conflict with modern ideas. It is very funny and an excellent use of satire.
