Astrid Anna Emilia Lindgren, née Ericsson, (1907 - 2002) was a Swedish children's book author and screenwriter, whose many titles were translated into 85 languages and published in more than 100 countries. She has sold roughly 165 million copies worldwide. Today, she is most remembered for writing the Pippi Longstocking books, as well as the Karlsson-on-the-Roof book series.

A mother is sitting with a child on her knee, their faces lit up by firelight. The mother is telling her daughter the Christmas story which the child imagines happening in her own farm. The story is told in a quiet way and shows the warmth and peace of the stable and the cold night outside.

Harald Wiberg's soft and gentle illustrations are very beautiful, they capture night scenes and animals perfectly and have a magical dreamlike quality.

Just noticed there are several copies of this on open library.

Klein lief sfeervol kerstverhaal, zachter en kleiner en met oh zo mooie prenten van Lars Klinting.

'Ze wisten niet waarom de vrouw die nacht naar hun stal kwam. Maar misschien begrepen ze wel dat ze het heel koud had en dat ze hongerig en moe was.
Misschien begreep het paard het, toen de vrouw haar koude handen onder zijn manen legde om ze te verwarmen.
Misschien begreep de koe het, toen de vrouw haar molk en de warme, lekkere melk dronk.
Misschien begrepen ook de schapen het wel, want toen de vrouw zich uitstrekte op het stro om te slapen, gingen ze dicht om haar heen liggen, zodat de vrouw het warm zou krijgen.
Zo viel de nacht stilletjes over de stal en over alle mensen en dieren die daarbinnen waren.'

De titel verraadt al een beetje waar het over gaat: het originele kerstverhaal van de geboorte van het kindje Jezus. Een man en een vrouw, Jozef en Maria, zoeken naar een slaapplaats en vinden een stal. "s Nachts blijft er één heldere ster boven de stal staan en wordt er een baby geboren.

De schrijfster van dit boek is bekend van o.a. Pippi Langkous, en schreef het al in 1961. Het verhaal uit "Kerstmis in de stal" speelde zich lang geleden af en staat ook in de bijbel.

Je kent het vast al, maar het blijft mooi om te lezen. Er zijn nieuwe tekeningen bij gemaakt. Ze zijn een beetje somber, maar passen goed bij het kerstverhaal.

De mensen zijn wel iets moderner aangekleed, waardoor het meer een prentenboek van deze tijd is geworden.

Maar toch blijft, vind ik, een beetje vreemd om Jozef in een coltrui te zien.

A mother takes her daughter on her knee before the fire and tells her of the first Christmas in this simple but perceptive holiday story from the pen of Astrid Lindgren. The story of that first Christmas is set "long ago and far away," but this is something of which the child knows nothing. "She knew only their own farm and a few yesterdays. And so as her mother spoke, the child saw everything as if it were hapening in their own stable. Perhaps even now." As the mother proceeds to unfold the Nativity Story in simple and direct language, her daughter imagines it all, giving it a distinctly Swedish cast in her mind...

Originally published in Sweden in 1961 as Jul i stallet, this lovely picture-book captures an important aspect of the Christmas story - of all stories, really - that every person interprets what they hear in light of their own personal and individual experience. Children in particular, having less life experience than their elders, will use what they know and what experience they do have, to make sense of what they are told. In the case of the girl in the story, it is rural Sweden which informs her vision of the Christmas narrative. Lindgren, ever a champion of the dignity of the child, demonstrates that this is both natural and beneficial, giving the tale an immediacy and meaning for the girl that would have otherwise been lacking. Reading Christmas In the Stable yesterday was a distinct pleasure, both from a textual and an aesthetic standpoint, as the accompanying artwork by illustrator Harald Wiberg, who also worked on Lindgren's The Tomten and The Tomten and the Fox , is luminously beautiful. The use of light here is outstanding, and every scene had me stopping, poring over the page, rereading that bit of text, and then poring over the page again. Favorites would have to be the initial scene, in which the mother holds her daughter on her lap:



And the one in which the shepherds watch the Baby Jesus in the stable:



Simply beautiful! Recommended most strongly to Harald Wiberg fans, and to anyone looking for beautiful retellings of the Nativity, in which the story is transformed according to the vision of the audience.

Jul i stalden af Astrid Lindgren er en kort, men helt igennem fantastisk julefortælling. En mor fortæller sit barn om en historie for længe, længe siden, som skete i en stald. Det er en sød genfortælling af Jesus-barnets fødsel.

De smukke illustrationer skaber fine associationer til den velkendte fortælling, og det der er rigtig fedt er, at vi ser det hele fra barnets øjne. Vi ser en fortælling, der foregår i en stald, og så er det lige meget, hvor det foregår – i en stald i et vinterkoldt Sverige eller en stald i Betlehem.

Denne læsning var kort, men jeg nød den i fulde drag. Der er en sødme og varme over fortællingen, som fik mig i en helt fantastisk julestemning. Jeg blev mindet om jul, da jeg var barn, og samtidig lagde der sig en ro over mig, imens jeg læste bogen i sofaen i julelysenes skær.

Jul i stalden af Astrid Lindgren er en bog, som jeg kun varmt kan anbefale. Alle burde læse den til jul. Det er helt sikkert på min liste over faste julebøger, som absolut skal læses hver jul. Er du ikke i julestemning, så bliver du det helt sikkert nu!

Tallin joulu kertoo ensimmäisen joulun tarinan. Pariskunta menee yöllä talliin etsimään suojaa, saa lapsen ja paimenet seuraavat tähteä paikalle. Enkelit ja Jeesus-lapsen nimi sekä kaikki muut uskonnolliset elementit on jätetty pois. Kuvitus on sijoitettu lumihankineen pohjoismaiseen maalaismaisemaan.

En nyt ihan ymmärrä kirjan pointtia. Maallisia kirjoja joulusta kuitenkin riittää huru mycket, joten jos haluaa Raamatun kertomuksen kertoa, miksi muuttaa se tähän muotoon. Toki kirja jättää tilaa keskustelulle.

Kuvitus oli taidokkaasti toteutettu niin yönhämyiseksi, että kuvia saa katsoa tarkkaan, jotta sieltä erottaa esimerkiksi tallin eläimet.

This is the myth of the first Christmas in the imagination of a small girl being told the story by her mother.

Mary is blonde, all the people are white Europeans, because the girl is a white blond Swedish chick. Despite that, it's still a creative retelling, without overtly supernatural elements like singing angels.

The only reason I checked this out was because of the chestnut draft horse on the cover, who plays an important part as witness to the Virgin birth. The illustrations were fab, but the horse was done particularly well. He looked vaguely like a Belgian, or a Belgian cross. Since the illustrator was Swedish, perhaps the horse was a North Swedish.

For me, 3.5 stars rounded up. I can't blame the child for imagining her own stable for the one in Bethlehem, and perhaps her own mother for Mary, but it still bothers me to be inaccurate. And this story is very short, leaves a lot out. Seems to be written more for adults, too, because it talks behind the child's back about what she can or cannot understand.

Kirja oli lyhyt, mutta Astridin tyylillä todella tunnelmallinen satuklassikko. Sopi hyvin pienen lapsen kanssa luettavaksi.

Aloitin hyvän mielen joulukalenterin, jossa luen/kuuntelen yhden jouluaiheisen kirjan joka päivä. Tarinan pituus on lyhyt, kuunneltaessa Max 1h. Kirjoja en ole valinnut etukäteen, joten jännä nähdä saanko 24 luukkua aukaistua. 😊
