In this world, society is split in Twilight City, the slums, and Paradiso, a city of opulence and wealth. Guang, having taken up the role of sorcerer and ruler of this land, must face a secret his family has harbored for generations — that their forefather, Prometheus, holds the heart of all sorcerers and bestows on them a deadly curse. Refusing to let this stand, Guang takes Ray with him into the depths of Paradiso, in hopes that together they can find a solution for this curse, as well as a future for all.
WORLD'S END BLUE BIRD volume 3 is the third installment of this fantastical, magical love story about overcoming fate and facing fear.
This book contains mature themes and sexual content, and is intended for audiences aged 18 and up.
I'm kind of over this series. The worldbuilding is pretty interesting, and there were a lot of things I liked about the connection between Guang and Ray, but the writing is just...not good.
The choppiness I'd noticed in the last volume is even worse here, with the pacing jolting all over the place. They're trying to figure out the big mystery behind sorcerers and Prometheus, which leads to them going to some massive secret basement that has quicksand, mind control, a creepy tree, and some entity that possesses Guang...except only partially because somehow in the weird supernatural basement his soul partially merged with Ray so now they can feel each other's emotions and pain...
And the whole "we've got to make a baby together" plotline is becoming even more prevalent, with Guang kind of wanting to have a child with Ray, but the entity possessing him wanting to instead force him into an incestuous relationship so it can continue its control of Guang's bloodline...
So yeah. I just. I don't know. It's losing a lot of my interest. There's a lot of Ray going "omg Guang I love you I will save you!" but without a real emotional core behind it now. And a LOT of choppy, pretentious, confusing monologues that are meant to be some sort of worldbuilding but are just getting messy.
Guang is forming a parliament now, with some mysterious mob-connected dude rising to power and the royals all dumping their money into the populace so they can get the vote (unlikely, not how democracy actually ends up working), but he also immediately got possessed again the minute Ray was out of the room. So now Ray's in some other mysterious underground space, hooking up old electronics systems and eating century-old beans.
And I'm sort of just bored. I liked the idea behind this, but the writing isn't good enough to hold it together.
Plus throwing in that weirdly violent dubcon sex between two side characters at the end. Why? What's the point? That's how I felt most of the way through this volume.
This volume is where the secrets of Guang's family's origins start to be revealed. The mystery behind Guang's curse is very obvious but I won't spoil it here. Of course Guang is in another situation where he needs to be saved by his allies. This has become a pattern for him. I love the development of the mystery behind the Na family and Guang's romance with Ray. I also appreciate the author writing Ray to question the traditions of incestuous marriage and birthing a heir in the Na family. It is refreshing to see characters question bizarre raditions and fight against it. I want Guang and Ray to have a happy ending.
I’m just so disappointed. Each volume of this series I read the quality goes down. I still care about Guang and Ray but I just felt like this volume was all over the place and I don’t get what the purpose of the side plot of Zela and the mafia guy was for. Must have been just to have smut in the volume it really added nothing to the story. The next volume is the final volume and I just hope that the ending gives me the feeling of love I had in the first volume and not the feeling of boredom and annoyance that this volume brought. One more positive the art is still beautiful.
No puedo conseguir interesarme. Creo que no seguiré al tomo 4 (y eso que ese es el último...). Igual lo ojeo para ver cómo acaba, pero realmente...meh.
This volume felt more like a bridge/set up for what's to come so I don't have a strong opinion about it. There was a huge focus on the world building. I think I'll like it more when I can read these all in one go and really appreciate the story as a whole.
