A Lady Most Engaged: A Grimm Regency Tale

Rate this book
Sometimes it takes more than a kiss to wake a sleeping heart...

Harriet Thornhill prides herself on propriety and sense of duty. The last thing she ever expected was to find herself at a house party in a compromising position with the Earl of Rosedale. Now engaged to a man she barely knows, Harriet must navigate a precarious balance between duty and her own happiness.

Lord Rosedale has spent years avoiding his domineering mother. In his absence, she’s run his estate precariously close to ruin. But when circumstances force Bram into an engagement with the spirited Harriet, he begins to see the world—and himself—in a new light.

As Harriet and Bram's reluctant alliance blossoms into something more, they must contend with the schemes of his manipulative mother and the neglect that threatens the estate and its tenants. Can Harriet learn to put her own happiness first without hurting those she loves? And can her determined spirit awaken Bram’s courage to defy his mother, or will the curse of least resistance doom them both?

This sweet Regency romance presents a gender-swapped reimagining of Sleeping Beauty. It's an enchanting story of love, self-discovery, and the courage to fight for one's own happily ever after that will make your heart flutter without venturing into steamy territory. At around 40,000 words, it's the Goldilocks of books - not too long, not too short, but just right for a fun and immersive read!

I dove into this ARC with zero prior knowledge of the story and no expectations (my favorite way to go into a book).
I love fake dating/engagement stories, so this was right up my alley. I'm so glad we got to see the growth of the characters, overcoming their grief and learning to stand up for themselves and those they love. The fairytale elements were minimal, but still very fun to try and pick up on. I look forward to reading more books from this author!

This regency romance is the first in a series inspired by Grimm’s fairytale. The FMC Harriet is a modest, practical older cousin to the winsome but genuinely sweet Arabella, and quickly finds herself over her head at a house party at the summer estate of Viscount Bramwell Ashford, Earl of Rosedale. Little does she know that Bram’s mother, Lady Rosdale, the dowager countess, is more than just judgmental – she is a woman with plans within plans, and the biggest plan of all: to find her son the perfect bride. But the vibrant characters at this house party complicate everyone’s varied intents, and as one thing quickly leads to another. At first, Harriet and Bram are as dismayed as everyone around them to find themselves engaged, but then, as they learn they might actually suit, the ground shifts underneath their feet and they are torn apart by others’ manipulations and their duty to their loved ones.

This book makes great use of the house party setting, with multiple friends and threats lurking around every corner. What fairy tale inspired all this? A gender-swapped Sleeping Beauty!

Cute romance with a nod to gender flipped Sleeping Beauty. I liked both the main characters but thought the evil mother was a bit over the top. And it didn’t really make sense to me if she was all about appearances why she would neglect how the castle looked so much (I got letting the tenants’ dwellings go that made sense). Even so this was probably more like 4 stars until the last 25% where it got a little too syrupy romantic for me but that’s personal preference not a ding on the actual writing.

This was the first regency romance I've read in a while, and it comes as a lovely palate cleanser from all the fantasy I've been reading. (Though I'm 100% about to dive back into more fantasy.)

As usual, here are the basics:

POV: third person limited
POV Characters: Harriet and Bram
Verb tense: past
Triggers: none
Spice: low-to-no spice, only a few steamy kisses here and there

Now on to my thoughts. I'm rounding up from 3.5 stars to 4 stars only because I do think this was a cute and sweet story, though perhaps not quite as swoony as I might have liked. And if it had been just a touch longer with some of the subplot explained a bit more, I might have enjoyed it even more. That said, I decided to read it because it was a regency romance fairy tale retelling (or that was the impression I got when I signed up to read it), and I wanted to see how that would play out.

This book is a regency romance retelling of Sleeping Beauty, but it's a gender-bent Sleeping Beauty, which was kind of a fun twist on the story. I honestly forgot which fairy tale this was supposed to be taken from until a scene early on revealed the spinning wheel in the home of a tenant on the property of Lord Rosedale. I'm not entirely sure I'd consider this a retelling, but perhaps an inspired by type of story? Either way, the premise was fun and cute and had all the elements of a lighthearted romance.

Harriet is a charming, intelligent woman who's traveling to Lord Rosedale's estate with her ill aunt and demure cousin as a chaperone to the younger girl. Not quite a spinster herself, Harriet's presence will mean her cousin doesn't endure her mother's hamfisted attempts to match her to whichever lord looks her way at the Rosedale party this summer. Harriet's fine with that and cares deeply for Arabella, who she considers much prettier than herself.

Meanwhile, Lord Rosedale, Bram, is returning from an extended period living in one of his other properties as the Earl. His mother's manipulations have drawn him out of hiding and into the fray of social parties as she tries to force him into wedding one of the young ladies she's brought to his country estate. It sounds like the typical lead-up to a forced engagement, but there's a twist as we learn just how manipulative and cruel Bram's mother can be. When she announces to him the terms of his father's will and implies she's kept them secret until he's almost past the time allotted to wed, Bram's only choice now is to hope his mother has brought in at least one woman he might possibly be happy enough to marry before his 25th birthday at the end of July.

There's some lovely tension in this story, especially between Bram and his mother, and I enjoyed the plot. As I said before, I'd have liked a bit more information, perhaps some more drawn out scenes between the leads and with the secondary characters, but that's okay. I can live without it. There were a couple loose ends, I felt, that could have been tied up better and a question I had about one character's actions. Otherwise, the story is neatly wrapped up and tied with a bow.

The romance felt decently paced, despite being a bit fast. There was a typical trope of a compromised person being forced into marriage, though that had its own swap I appreciated it. Humor sprinkled throughout helped to ease some of the tension I felt about Bram and his lack of agency in his own home, and I appreciated his growth.

Overall, this was a sweet story and a quick read. Definitely a lighthearted read if you're looking for something to check out with a hint of fairy tale mixed in for fun.

Ugh. This... This was so painful.

The side characters were all caricatures, some excruciatingly so, and all the characters felt like plot-puppets rather than fully fleshed characters. The villain's motivations and actions were incompatible with each other and seemed to fluctuate over the course of the novel based on what would be most mean and villainous at the time. (If you want to retain control of the estate, then why are you urging your son to marry and fulfill the terms of the will that will grant him control of the estate, since the control will revert to you if he doesn't marry? If you're so concerned with your family's grandeur and reputation, why are you letting the grounds fall to pieces around you?) The about-face of two minor characters to force an enemies-to-lovers subplot was baffling, honestly, and then they both went from petty antagonists towards the FMC to backing her right at the end in an abrupt and incoherent switch.

The narrative was similarly inconsistent about propriety, to the point where the double standard felt so ridiculous I wondered if this was supposed to be satire. ("An unmarried lady can't go off on her own! So I, an unmarried lady, must leave my escort and run off on my own to find unaccompanied single cousin and accompany her!" why couldn't you just. go with your escort to find her. instead of running off. on your own???) The historical accuracy felt thin, all the more so because what was considered proper or good or acceptable for the time varied within the story. I don't mind minor anachronisms and historical inaccuracy too much if it's just consistent, a cohesive story-world, but this story was all over the place.

The genderbent Sleeping Beauty concept — with the guy held captive by an abusive mother and saved by the girl — is great as a concept, but the execution here was lacking. The inclusion of the fairytale elements felt slapped on rather than interwoven. The sleepiness of the MMC felt forced and unnecessary, and the spindle was just... why. It had no reason to be in the narrative and was played up because of the fairytale, then treated as though it had helped arrange their meeting — but it didn't: their meeting happened because he fell asleep because he was tired. He didn't have to be injured by a spindle for it to happen. So the whole spindle bit felt utterly pointless.

This whole novella just did not cohere, and it's not because of the length.

A Lady Most Engaged:
A Grimm Regency Romance
By Audrey Glenn

This was a delightful read. Thanks to a series of misunderstandings, the two main characters find themselves engaged to perfect strangers.

Bram, Lord Rosedale, has had his presence at a house party demanded by his mother. FYI, Lady Rosedale is a tyrannical monster in the personality department. Said house party has been arranged so Lady Rosedale can have a say in who her son marries. Bram's need to marry soon has just become realized. If he hopes to inherit, he has to do so within three months. Surprise!

Harriet Thornhill, is at the house party only because she is accompanying her cousin. But when she accidentally finds herself in an innocent accident with Lord Rosedale, propriety demands that they marry. If Harriet doesn't agree to marry, her cousin and younger sisters will be tainted by her shame. Note to self: only try to awaken a sleeping person if you have witnesses to the event.

I loved the subtle nod to Sleeping Beauty in this story: the roses, the spindle, the cottage. This is a truly unique and enjoyable Regency romance. And if for no other reason than the cover, you should pick up this book. I loved Harriet's character; she could not be forced into anything until she could weigh the effects of her choices. And I absolutely loved Harriet, and it was evident that she was the person one would want in their corner. Perfect for Bram if he could get rid of the overbearing mother. Lady Rosedale makes Lady Catherine de Bergh look like a saint!

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

"They way his eyes softened when he looked at her and the gentle timbre of his voice hinted at a future far more promising than she'd dared for in this arranged match."
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is a sweet regency tale based on the fairytale of Sleeping Beauty, but the genders are swapped.
A lady Most Engaged by Audrey Glenn is about Bram and Harriet.

Bram is the earl of Rosedale by title, but since his father died his mother decides everything that happens in the estate. To avoid confrontation Bram spends his time at his other estates. His mother wants him to find a wife and throws an elaborate house party to find a suitable wife.

Harriet goes to the party mostly as a chaperone for her younger cousin. Not knowing the earl of Rosedale has arrived yet she tries to find her way, but stumbles upon him sleeping in a chair. She tries to wake him, he is caught by surprise and they fall onto the ground in a compromosing positition, which we all know where that will lead our MCs.

This is a meet-cute story, which turns into a fake and arranged marriage. Will Bram and Harriet survive the gossiping, the scheming mother of the earl, and learn to put their own happiness first?

If you want to know read this book! It's a very fun, cute little story with a HEA, as all fairytales do!

What a brilliant story! I was on my toes from the very beginning all the way to the end! Bram is the heir to the Earldom and Harriett is a very simple woman with little to offer in terms of wealth or prestige. She is simply accompanying her cousin and aunt to a party where all the richest maidens around are looking to be made the Earl’s new fiancé. But Bram and Harriet are found in a compromising situation  – quite accidentally –  before anyone even had a chance to meet the Earl.  d now they find themselves engaged.

However, Bram’s mother is the vilest type of women around and she is currently the countess of the manor until Bram’s birthday in a few short months. She has been making everyone’s life miserable for as long as everyone can remember. Every time she shows up on the page, I feel instant anxiety, giving credit to Glenn’s ability to write a character that can really get under your skin.

Ultimately, love must prevail and Bram will ensure he keeps Harriet’s hand in marriage, no matter the consequences. Even though their pending engagement was a wild surprise to them both, over the matter of a few days they have become very fond of one another and can’t imagine life any other way. But the evil mother has to be dealt with and quickly or they risk losing everything.

I am a big fan of reimagined or perspective shifted stories, so when I got the opportunity to read A Lady Most Engaged, which is described as a Reimagined Grimm Fairytale it sounded right up my alley. I have been in a bit of a reader's slump lately, and taking this story to the beach was just the cure. I immediately related to the characters on a trip they didn't want to be on to go somewhere they didn't want to go. They felt like friends, and I enjoyed trying to guess which characters were the reimagined Fairy tale characters. Most retellings hit you over the head with the paralelles basically screaming,'Do you get it?' Diane Audrey is much more subtle, and that made the story all the more entertaining. I couldn't put it down! My only complaint is that it was short. The story doesn't feel thin or unfinished; I just would have loved more time with the characters. I hope we'll see more of them in the future.

This was a very sweet non-magical Regency novella inspired by sleeping beauty, that somehow still makes the reader feel magical even without any fairies or actual curses.

There were several slight references to the original Grimm Sleeping Beauty fairytale and even a few subtle nods to the Disney version. My favorite was the spindle and how it actually played a prominent part in bringing the main couple together in the most surprising way ever.

There were several times where I was so annoyed at the MMC for not standing up to his dragon of a mother, and oh my goodness did I despise one specific gossip of a character!

But good triumphs over evil as the FMC inspired him to “wake up” and take a stand against his mother.

Not only did you spend the book rooting for the main couple, trying to get them to get together faster while also understanding all the societal reasons for them to wait, but there were a few side characters that also got their happily ever after that just made me giggle with all the happiness it inspired!

This was a Regency non-magical twist on Sleeping Beauty. It was such a fun sweet read with minimal fairytale references. I loved our main characters Bram and Harriet. They are both kind, considerate, caring, and trying to do the right thing for those they care about.

They encountered many trials, and I loved walking through those with them and seeing how they overcame the issues, learned more about each other, and drew closer together in such a short time.

It’s full of Regency gossip, backbiting, scandal (whether real or misunderstood), a tyrannical Lady, storms, lost dogs, misunderstandings, surprises, and sweet kisses.

If you love Regency HEA no-spice romance, this one is for you!

No spice, language, or violence.

A delightful, closed-door regency romance novella that has added Sleeping Beauty reimagining with a spin. Bram, an earl that has three months to marry or lose his inheritance, finds himself suddenly engaged to his houseguest, Harriet. Along with their whirlwind courtship, there is a villainous, meddling mother bent on ruining the main characters’ happily ever after. Told in a dual, third person point-of-view, this story was a fun quick read that brought me back in time.this book is part of the Grimm Regency Tales novella series, a collection of reimagined Grimm fairytales by various authors.

Genre: Regency Romance, Fairy Tale Retelling, Sweet Romance, Proper Romance
Spice Level: Kissing

What a fun story with a twist where the fellow needs to "wake up."

I was particularly intrigued with *A Lady Most Engaged* because of the dynamic between the characters as they feel they way through a sticky situation, utter ruin on several fronts. Bram is kind-hearted but trampled over by his mother. Harriet is strong-willed, principled, and stuck in an engagement with Bram because of a misunderstanding.

I can't wait to read more in this series. The length is short and can be read in a day.

Happy reading!

It was a fun and easy read. This is the first book I've read by the author. I really liked the way the two main characters meet - a very rom-com oopsy moment.
My main dislike was keeping track of who was who. I'm not sure why but at the beginning I mixed up a couple of characters over and over (after the engagement that was easier) - I guess I struggled with who the main lady was.
I thought the story was charming overall. The mother over the top - I really struggled with her controlling attitude yet the manor falling apart - that didn't make sense to me and I don't feel was plausibly written.
I did like Bram and Harriet overall though and their story.

I went into this book with no background knowledge and at first I had a hard time getting into it because I usually have a basic idea of what I'm reading but the more I read, the more I liked the storyline.
Sleeping beauty is one of my least favorite Disney characters but the unique twist and gender bend this story brings out made it more interesting.
It was a light breezy read as a novella, it wasn't to long and drawn out or to short where you didn't feel like it had a good ending, I throughly enjoyed it.

This is a fun, clean (kissing only) regency romance. While it incorporates key elements of the fairy tale 'Sleeping Beauty', I would class it as more 'inspired by' that an actual 're-telling of' the fairy tale, but it is sweet, charming and romantic. A novella, it is both long enough to tell a complete, satisfying story and short enough to read in one sitting.

I received an ARC and leave an honest review.

I loved seeing the parts of the original Grimm's fairytale of Sleeping Beauty woven in.
Don't worry, it's not dark like I worried about with "grimm" or black cover, just a wonderful regency love story!

The cute flirting was the best part!

These multi-author stand-alone series are fun because I get to find new authors like Audrey Glenn. I really hope she makes a few spin off stories for these fascinating side characters.

Content:
Style: Dual POV, Regency fairytale retelling
Intimacy - mild-moderate (kisses & longing)
Language - None
Violence - None
Potential Triggers - bad childhood, mean & manipulative parents

Though the fairytale themes were very subtle, it really added to the story in a nice way. I’m not very familiar with any historical genres, let alone regency romance, I typically read more contemporary genres, but I found this very sweet and magical. Overall I did really enjoy this story. I just wish that there would have been more swoon and more fairytale forward elements, especially considering it was marketed as sleeping beauty inspired.

A phenomenal regency era tale. I love Audrey's interpretation of the Sleeping Beauty tale. I really enjoyed reading the story from both the perspective of Bram (Lord Rosedale) and of Harriet. It made the story that much better seeing everything from both sides.

This story is great for young adults since there isn't really any spice to it, as well as for anybody that enjoys regency or historical romance. I look forward to reading more of the tales in the Grimm Regency set.

It's giving me bridgeton vibes. And I love it! It's story love story and the first book in this series from multiple authors! I loved this one so much because it shows that sometimes you find love in the weirdest ways. I loved watching the growth from both MC in this book!! If you like bridgeton vibes and stuff from that era give this book and the rest of the books in the series a try. I have a feeling that I'm going to love the rest of them just as much as I love this one.

To start off with I have to say I absolutely loved reading this book. The characters development and interactions was so amazing throughout the story. Just after reading this a few chapters I was hooked and couldn’t stop reading. I felt that Bram and Harriet were so perfect for each other’s and really brought out the best since they had similar perspectives. Overall definitely a an amazing read that I suggest checking out for yourself. I can’t wait to read more work by Audrey Glenn.

A super cute regency romance inspired but sleeping beauty. It had a classic feel that made it super easy to read and get drawn in. I loved the struggle to stand up for what the Earl knew was right and the turmoil the characters went through to find their courage and make a stand. Super cute all around and I am excited to read the rest in the Grimm Regency Tale set!

I absolutely adored this story which was a unique mash up of Sleeping Beauty but gave me all the feels of a Jane Austen era story. The characters were allowed significant character growth despite the length of the novel. I honestly don’t know if I’ve ever enjoyed a novella such as this so thoroughly! I’m looking forward to the rest of this series!

The Earl grows a spine

Clean romance. The earl and Harriet are mildly compromised. The inevitable offer of marriage is made. The Dowager Countess has her own plans and is malicious and threatens another pair. The end is dramatic and somewhat sudden as the Earl puts his foot down. A surprise pairing has also happened 😳. Enjoy 😉!

DNF at 63%……I do not think the book was bad nor the story, I was just somewhat bored while reading. Everything was just flat (to me). It then became a chore to read so I sadly dnf’d. As I did not finish the book, Please do not take my review into consideration when giving this book a chance!
