Getting Away With Murder, Learning From Dateline

Rate this book
Want to spend the rest of your life with that perfect-in-every-way special someone who's not your spouse? Tired of fighting over domestic matters like who takes out the trash and who washes the dishes? Fed up with your business partner? Eager to gain your inheritance while you're still young enough to enjoy it? Thirsting for revenge against the lover who dumped you or the finicky banker who nixed your car loan? Annoyed with the noisy neighbor who never mows his lawn?

If these or any number of other motives have pushed you to the point of murder most foul, Getting Away With Murder, Learning from Dateline (and Other True Crime Shows) is just the “weapon” you need to pull off the perfect murder. But as Dateline's Keith Morrison would say so distinctively in a voice both soothing and sinister, Or… is it?

Maybe this book's only a spoof intended to cheer you up in a world beset with so many serious problems, from political discord to the ravages of climate change to regional conflicts that could at any moment ignite World War III.

Based on observations shared by true crime binge-watchers A. Bigg Fann and his wife Imma, award-winning, bestselling author Mike Cox has compiled a Dateline-inspired book that includes a wide-ranging catalog of devious pro tips. These best practices are based on the mistakes of hundreds of men and women currently serving life sentences without the possibility of parole or sitting on death row. Doubtless most of these inmates will lament not having had a copy of Getting Away With Murder before they made their move.

Beyond that, Getting Away With Murder is a fun yet fact-filled book that should be within reach of every dedicated true crime fan's recliner. In addition to its helpful homicidal how-tos, Cox's book delves into all manner of things of interest to the millions of true crime buffs (not to mention would-be murderers) around the world.

While not REALLY intended to help prospective killers, Getting Away With Murder includes an amusing devil's dictionary of true crime show clichés, little known facts about murder, to-die-for recipes for Dateline-watching snacks, an assortment of true crime-related “best-of” lists and other material virtually guaranteed to delight those obsessed with true crime. Getting Away With Murder also includes a first-of-its-kind, fill-in-the-blank true crime binge-watcher's log. Use this handy tool and you’ll never again forget which Dateline episode you watched the night before.

Do not under any circumstance leave your underlined, dog-eared copy of this book behind when you flee the crime scene.

I am the author of 15 nonfiction books, the most recent being "Time of the Rangers" (New York: Forge Books, 2009), the second of my two-volume history of the Texas Rangers. Also just out is "Historic Photos of Texas Oil," (Nashville: Turner Publishing), a coffeetable book containing some 200 vintage photos from the oil patch. My other books include a study of Texas disasters, three other books on the Texas Rangers, one true crime story, a biography, a memoir and three local histories, as well as numerous magazine articles, essays and introductions for other books. I have been an elected member of the Texas Institute of Letters since 1993.

My byline regularly appears in a number of national and statewide magazines and I have been an award-winning newspaper reporter for nearly 20 years, most of that time with the Austin American-Statesman.

my primer to murder mysteries

Not a murder or crime fan, I have laughed with fondness at the author’s ability to make light of a serious topic while educating , entertaining , and intriguing me into a new environment.
