Mason After my wife died, I tried to raise my kids right while running one of the biggest cattle ranches in Montana. But, when my daughter broke her leg in the rodeo, and I hired her best friend from college to help her, I didn't know it'd be my undoing. Lorilei is in my home. My thoughts. And, my heart. I know I need to push her away, that our differences would be too hard to overcome. But, when my ranch is threatened, and she's put in the crosshairs, will I risk everything to protect her?

Fine, fine! Cowboy-inspired? Cowboy-inspired adjacent? Whatever others might call, I didn't have to read about those disgusting poncho things old timey cowboys used to wear!
4.25 Ahhhhhh this was niceeeeee! Spectacular gimme 14 of them rn! Love love love They were super duper cute, sawyer was great, Sophie was also amazing.
And mason and Lori were the cutest. Age gap (41/23) my fave trope ever and it’s best friends dad. It did not disappoint, I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to reading the others soon.
I kinda wish it was a tad more emotional when she was leaving (I like to cry) but it was still sad but I actually didn’t love how Sophie found out on the last day of her leaving. I wish she found out during like a holiday or a visit back to the ranch or even is mason went to her college? That would’ve been fab, but hey I’m not the author!
I liked Sophie and her reaction was VALID and so was masons and so was loris ahahah everyone is allowed to react however the duck they want! But I kinda wish the conflict part was a little longer, I felt like Sophie was mad for 4 chapters max… miss girl extend it to 10 chapters, they’re your dad and best friends bestie! YOU CAN BE ANGRY!
I hated the rushed ending. Sophie told Lori that her dad loves her… like bro I wanted mason ti tell her that! And then Lori fkn told Sophie that “that’s good, because I’m having his baby.” BFFRrn and then her rushing to the ranch and him pretending to be angry for a whole 2 minutes BAHAHAHA and he’s like “why did my daughter find out you’re pregnant before me.” And miss girl is like “bc she’s my best friend.” Lmao
It should’ve even at 75%
The rest was unnecessary and bloody dragged, I’m guessing she did that for the following books in the series but Mason and Loris story ending by 80% max.
Sawyer knowing all along was the funniest thing ever and then him testing her to see if he would go out on a date either his best friend but she almost gagged at the thought heheh.
Also Ford? (Yk how I feel about these car name guys ;)) is his girl dead or just left him? He says he can’t relate totally mason bc his wife is dead but mason acts like fords girl is also dead? So pls is she dead or alive?
Loved this story so, so much!! It's got an age gap, an unexpectedly poetic cowboy, a hidden relationship, cattle rustling, HOT cowboys, and a pregnancy surprise. These are definitely a few of my most favourite things. Swoon!
Lori/Lorilei is a 22 year old physical therapy student who is best friends with Sophia.
Mason is a 41 year old widower and dad to twin 19 year olds, one of whom is Sophia.
Lori and Mason meet when Lori is hired to take care of Sophia following a barrel racing accident. Both are struck by the beauty of the other but don't say anything because society. Then he starts teaching her how to ride. They grow closer, she decides to take a risk and then he teaches her how to *ride*. It is deliciously romantic and absolutely swoony.
Lori is a magnificent character. She is so sweet and kind and wants to find a place & home. She wants someone to want her, to love her, to choose her. But she doesn't think anyone could and she has a tendency to get in her own way. Trust is hard. Communication is harder.
Mason is gorgeous and sweet and a little broken. He has been surviving since his wife died years ago and doing his best for his kids but his life has been lonely. And it is time for him to be selfish and be happy.
I adore this series and the characters MA has created. They are human and loveable and you cheer so intensely for them.
Lori helps her best friend Sophia recover from her accident. She gets hired to also cook and clean to make money for school. Then she starts falling for Sophia’s dad! Mason never thought he could have another love in his life, but Lori proves him wrong. While all this is happening, his cattle starts to go missing. There is such good spice and chemistry in this book. Can’t wait to read Dixon’s book.
Spurs is perfect for those looking for an age gap, forced proximity cowboy romance! I loved the found family vibes as well as the way I got an authentic glimpse into farm life. Watching Mason heal and Lori learn she is worthy of love was beyond perfect for such a magical setting.
Spurs is my first cowboy romance and definitely won’t be my last. I had impatiently been waiting for this book to come out after seeing all the teasers for it and wasn’t disappointed when I finally was able to read it. This was a refreshing story that dragged me out of a slump, I loved every second. So much different to M.A usual style, but worth it.
I really enjoyed this, was a bit apprehensive cus it had the dreaded dead wife trope that is not my favourite, but it wasn’t too annoying at all in this book. She had been dead for 10 years and H had been celibate since but it was more cus he threw himself into working and running the ranch than anything else. He didn’t push the h away or anything due to it which I liked, as soon they started something he was all in and ready to tell his kids but the h is the one who pushed away a little due to fear of losing her best friend. There was a tiny separation when Sophia found out but it was resolved really quickly. The mystery of who was sabotaging the ranch and stealing cattle was interesting, it wasn’t fully resolved so I’m sure it’ll be a running theme through other characters books if we get them. I think Mason’s brother Dixon will be next judging by the phone call he made to Mason in the epilogue but can’t wait to read if Ford, Sawyer and Sophia get books too. Masons younger brother Cade was briefly mentioned because he was the reason H’s wife was killed, Sophia said he was she drunk driver so that’ll probably be an interesting story too.

Dear Lord baby Jesus, bring me a man like Mason. Amen
I’ve read this book twice and it’s just as good! I love Mason and Lori’s story. Just the right amount of angst. The sub plot and suspense was just right too. I’m always a sucker for a cowboy age gap romance with happy ending and this one delivered!
Spurs by M.A. Cobb is the first book in the Black Gulch series. It centers around Lori who goes to help her friend Sophia, after Sophia is hurt barrel racing. It's a beautiful story of friendship, love and family. Mason is a man who lost his first wife and never expected to find love again. Lori has been forced to take care of herself due to a mother who cares more about her current boyfriend than her daughter.
Tropes: Best Friend's Dad Age gap
I received a free review copy in exchange for an honest review.
I went into this book series blind by the recommendation of my friend and she definitely did not steer me wrong. All of my favorite book tropes that I love of my other book friends do not like are in this one and I was living for it!
Mason is a great man and I love how he recognized that he deserved happiness and was going to do anything he could to make sure that he not only gave her the time but the patience to also feel the same.
I cannot wait for the rest of this series to become available.
“I promise the sweat of my brow, the strength in my body, and the love in my heart, to do everything I can to show you each day what you mean to me.” ― M.A. Cobb, Spurs: A Black Gulch Cowboy Romance
Not my usual rom interested but would totally continue the series!
**bonus quote** "It’s only since you’ve been here that I’ve been able to breathe again. To feel like the day is worth meeting." ― M.A. Cobb, Spurs: A Black Gulch Cowboy Romance
First of all this couple was so cute! I absolutely love Mason! I’ve been in a huge book slump and this was suggested to me by a friend and I’m so glad I read it. It had such a perfect blend of spicy, sweet, and suspense there at the end. Some of the time jumps were a little hard to tell but I did like that we got to see their relationship grow. I can’t wait to see what this author has in store for us with the next book in the series.
Spurs is a spicy, slow burn, best friends dad, cowboy romance. Mason is a widowed rancher, all of his time is focused on his kids and his ranch. Lori is a college student, and best friends with Mason's daughter Sophia. When Sophia is hurt, Lori comes to spend the summer at the ranch to help Sophia and help out around the house. Lori & Mason have some intense chemistry, and the angst is off the charts! When they finally give into their feelings? Wowza.... I loved this book, and can't wait for more in the Black Gulch Series!
DNF. Who in the world is enjoying this?? Mason is gross...who talks about wanting to make their girlfriend scream so loud that their daughter knows it's her? Barf. Does Lori have any lips left? Every other sentence talks about her biting in her lip. And cheese and crackers the phrase "ass clenching in those jeans" is NOT sexy 🤣 oh boy. I just can't 🤣 the straw that broke the camels back was when his daughter reveals Lori's pregnancy and all Mason can talk about is how hard it makes him. 0/10 stars. Zero.
I what a great introduction to Black Gulch ranch. Mason and Lori’s story was so good! Age gap and forbidden romance….best friend’s dad?! Yes please! And what is it with a dirty mouthed cowboy that gets my gears going?! I can’t wait to read Dixon and Char’s story next.
I’ve been teasing this book for months and now it’s about that time to toss out my arc review. I love a cowboy romance and give me a plot twist and a dash of darkness and baby I AM HOOKED.
Slow burns and I have a love hate relationship because they have to be done with such finesse that you stay drawn in. 𝘔𝘢 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘩𝘪𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘢𝘪𝘭 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘥, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘴𝘵, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘶𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘰, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵. 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘢𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘱 𝘰𝘯 𝘗𝘢𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘰𝘯.
💕Reading it through again all at once, made me fall in love with the words 𝒶𝓁𝓁 ℴ𝓋ℯ𝓇 𝒶ℊ𝒶𝒾𝓃. The push and pull, the spark igniting, it’s a masterpiece of words woven into poetry.
It takes a lot for a book to pull tears from me and only a handful of authors have managed it in their day. There is something about the beauty of these two characters realizing they deserve more, seeing the broken pieces in one another, and wanting to mend them.
🌼𝑴𝒂𝒔𝒐𝒏 & 𝑳𝒐𝒓𝒊 🌼 are simply 𝓅ℯ𝓇𝒻ℯ𝒸𝓉𝒾ℴ𝓃. I want to hold them close and protect them forever. It’s a love that is done BIG and BEAUTIFUL because there is no other way.

Spurs was a super spicy surprise and makes me wanna move firmly into my cowboy romance era.
Mason is a sexy AF cattle ranch owner.
He is gritty, hard-working and yet held this romantic, poetic side that rarely had a chance to emerge. Single, raising two kids and doing the daily grind on his ranch, Mason just had no time for love.
Lorilei aka Lori, is a young college student, in the midst of financial hardship and only has her best friend, Sophia, to confide in. Sophia just happens to be the daughter of our rough and tumble hotty, Mason.
Mason and Lorilei's chemistry was off the charts from the moment they laid eyes upon one another.
The angsty build up made this a semi-slow burn that heated up well before the halfway point of the book.
Although I wouldn't classify this as an extremely dark romance, it does contain elements of forbidden love and age gap.
There is also an element of found family and I absolutely loved how some of the animals had their own personalities. It really made it a well crafted story.
There is a secondary plotline that runs alongside the romance and it takes center stage during the last third of the book. It was an interesting plot that created elements of mystery along the way with surprise revelations in the end.
I honestly enjoyed this book and read it within a day. I also see that it's book 1 in a series and my mind immediately starting churning out the possibilities of who will be featured in the next book. I saw several possibilities for some really good romantic developments and am now aching to read the next installment.

When @m.a.cobb_author told me that she was writing a "not so dark" contemporary cowboy romance as opposed to her usual I-might-wanna-throw-up or this-might-turn-me-on horror romance, I knew I was gonna love it because... I love everything she writes! But I did not expect this story to be so amazingly sweet and just so absolutely wholesome. First of all, this is an age gap romance and everyone knows I love me a daddy/sir trope! 😍
I absolutely adore Mason McCullough, he is that sort of dominant-but-sweet type cowboy who everyone wants! I love the setting of his ranch, his dedication to his family business, his relationship with his kids and really, just everything about him. Lorilei is just as wonderful, she's a 23 year old student who works her butt off to make sure she is self-reliant. I love that she's actually best friends with Mason's daughter and that's how they meet. Of course, a hidden relationship like this totally spells out drama and I was here for all of it!
The spice was spiiiiicy, as with all M.A. Cobb books😜🥵 and I absolutely loved the suspense aspect that was such a big part of this story. I love Mason and Lori together, I love how perfect they are for each other, how perfectly they fit together and just how sweet their relationship is. I love that Mason knew from the beginning and had absolutely no doubts about her and in turn, this helped Lori deal with some bigger issues she had. I loved this book so much and I absolutely cannot wait for Dixon and Ford's books! 😍
oh my god. just omg. thats it. soo taboo but SOOO MF GOOD!!!!! I’m actually excited to read the next book in the series and I usually don’t read series of interconnected books.
chef’s kiss 🤌🏻. lori and mason are to DIE for!! Their chemistry since the beginning was soo… 🥵. Listen, I’m 21 and I’d let that man do me just like lori. Also MASSIVE breeding kink.
i read a love after loss right before this one, and this one did it 10000x better. He didn’t feel guilty for being happy and he was so emotionally mature.
The trope is something I didn’t think I’d enjoy because best friends dad?? what?? BUT OMG IM SO GLAD I TOOK THE LEAP. Mason is, realistically, one of my favorite book boyfriends (husbands 🤭) EVER.
There is a subplot that is not entirely filled, but I’m going to assume its because it will be further expanded into future books.
Some quotes I highlighted, for your research purposes 🤭🫶🏻
“‘Then I know how long I have to try and convince you to stay.’” awww 🥹
“If it takes patience, I have that. I can wait.” aww mason 😭❤️
“I’m a damn grandpa.” LOL
“Maybe Lori will get pregnant. It makes the blood rush to my groin. Now, I want to try like hell. Sophia won’t hate her, not if she’s carrying my baby.” dont let me down soph
“I can’t wait until I have a whole new pack of kids to listen to.” ommfg this man

🤠 Rope yourself a pleasure dom cowboy in this spicy romance. 🤠
🖤I fell in love with M.A Cobb's writing through her pitch black and erotic horror romances. 🖤 She is the 👑queen of spice 👑, drama and is also freaking hilarious when she wants to be. She brings all that together in this amazing cowboy romance.
🌄 The setting of Black Gulch ranch is like another character. I felt like I was right there along with our FMC as she learns about ranch life. 🌄
👭 I love the beautiful friendship between our FMC and her bestie (daughter of our cowboy). I think all romance books should have a strong female friendship in them, and this one is so heartwarming.
💦The spice is SPICING. While there is a little bit of a warm up as our characters get to know each other, M.A. Cobb gifts us with scenes often and full of dirty talk. 💦
There are also these little laugh out loud moments that had me squealing! "It's a little salty." "You're fixin' to get the Pacific Ocean if you don't stop." 😂😂😂💦💦💦
