Lily is on the run. Grief-stricken by loss and with monsters snapping at her heels, she has no one left and nowhere to go. To gain protection, Lily subjects herself to the mercy of the elusive and secretive Court of Chains, volunteering herself as the property of a supernatural creature from within the Court... but she wasn't prepared for the King of Chains to Claim her for himself.
Aleksander has ruled the Court of Chains since its inception over a decade ago. He is the King of Chains, a ruthless, unwavering vampiric ruler who places his Court above everything else. Even his own happiness. But then a strange, human girl—uneducated to the ways of Chains—enters his domain. With her arrival, Aleksander's resolve is tested as his cold body starts warming to the touch of another.
Rawnie Sabor is an author of fantasy romances filled with troubled people and gorgeous monsters.
She delights in everything dark and dreamy, especially sapphic love stories with a heartache-inducing relationship at their center. Rawnie lives in a Scandinavian harbor town and spends most of her time either writing or thinking about writing. A certified night owl, her free evenings involve researching obscure folklore or conjuring story ideas for her ever-growing fantasy worlds.
So, I already love Rawnie Sabor, their books are amazing and they’re the loveliest person ever. I’ve only read the sapphic books that are apart of The Court of Chains Series. Kiss of Seduction was my first introduction to Rawnie and I was hooked! I arc read A Little Sin and Green-Eyed Monster. I’ve been wanting to go back and read the others (and they all came highly recommended to me) I’m so glad I did! I absolutely loved this book! It was so good to see Lily and Aleksanders story and how they got to where they are when I met them in Kiss of Seduction. I highly recommend Rawnies books. They can be read as standalones and you can just read the Sapphic books or the MF books and you won’t be lost in the story. But I would definitely say you’d enjoy them all! Especially if like me and you’d read Kiss of Seduction first! Rawnie has such a was of storytelling and world building that isn’t over complicated and it just draws you in! I couldn’t put this down.
Written in third person with 2x POV’s. Vampire/Human, Fantasy/Paranormal, Bonded via a contract, Overcoming grief/trauma. 8x Spicy Scenes.
Lily runs from monsters into the arms of monsters. The Court of Chains is a new type of paranormal court, one focused on self-control and the protection and policing of its members. It's ruled over by it's founders vampire Aleksander Voronov and succubus Natalya, and it's Aleksander that Lili ends up being taken in by. Lily has no idea what she's gone into, and Aleksander feels outraged that Lily has somehow manipulated Court laws into a bond she doesn't deserve.
I come to this having read the "main" books in this series, and this isn't quite as good as those. It suffers compared to those because it bears the burden of doing the setup of Chicago and the Courts, as well as the Claiming and Iron's Eve and pledging. Other than all the world-building, this one also has a lot of sex and a higher level of BDSM than the rest of the series, all of which doesn't leave a lot of room for plot. Additionally, while Lily and Aleksander are great, they're fairly basic romance archetypes of the grumpy tortured dominant and secret submissive who has a sunny personality.
That's not to say that this is bad, just that it suffers in comparison to the brilliant books that follow it.
I first read this book a year ago. I wanted to give the author a chance even though this story is purely straight romance, which is not my usual genre at all. Once again, I wasn’t disappointed.
The writing and pacing are flawless, and learning the full lore of the Court of Chains makes the other books in the series stand out even more.
Lily and Aleksander are a perfect grumpy-sunshine couple. Both have lived tortured lives, yet they secretly have a soft spot for each other.
My only complaint about this book might just be a me thing, but I felt there was too much sex that didn’t seem necessary to the story. In the later books (the ones focused on fiends), the spicy scenes helped deepen the characters connections because they tied with their sins, which made sense to me. With Aleksander, however, it mostly just felt like his way of claiming Lily as "his."
Honestly, this book made me love Natalya even more. Even when she was unhappy (which was all the time), she made the loyal choice just to make the people she loved happy. For that, she has my endless respect.
Overall, I’d recommend this book, even if you don’t usually enjoy straight romance. If you love the worldbuilding and lore of this series, you’ll enjoy it. If you prefer sapphic stories, start with Kiss of Seduction instead. You’ll be fine. I’ll never skip a Rawnie Sabor book, whether it’s straight or sapphic, because her writing is just that good.
This was a good novel. It was my third by this author (although it was their first) and I can say that these novels get better as the series goes on. Which makes sense. This was “the worst”, but don’t take that to mean tooooo much because the others I have read in this series are now among my all time favorites and that is a high bar to compare to. You should read this series. Do it, you will be happy. No, I’m serious, read this series, the whole thing. I would recommend starting with this novel because it helps the worldbuilding for the following ones, however you are also safe to jump in at any point in the series (I LOVE it when the author writes that way, so thank you).
As I said, this was good. The author accomplished the difficult task of balancing a large amount of worldbuilding while also keeping it accessible to readers; I don’t think you need to be a fantasy (or whatever this would be called) reader to enjoy this novel. The characters were well written and complicated enough to be interesting. The cast of side characters was perhaps even better, and I loved to see that the author started the series off already including characters that star in their own novels later on. I don’t know if it was excellent planning ahead or if they just realized that their side characters are awesome, but either way it WORKED. The plot was solid, if a bit simplistic.
This novel spent most of its time immersing you in the worldbuilding, and exploring the relationship between Lily and Alexander. These elements were great. The “actual plotline” (as I called it in my head) that drove the story was relatively simplistic and didn’t really get a lot of the word count, which was surprising, and left it feeling a bit thin. I have seen this same theme in the authors other novels, although it worked better there than here.
There was also a LOT of word count dedicated to the spicy scenes, which I surprisingly think worked against the novel. I love me a nice spicy scene but by the end they started to feel like it was being forced in as opposed to flowing naturally, and it was to the detriment of the plotline. The other novels in this series were equally spice-heavy, but it made a lot more sense in the context of those novels than it did here (writing a character that gets powered-up or healed by sexy-times is honestly genius!!!). If you want sexy and don’t care how its packaged, then this novel delivers and you won’t have a problem.
I skimmed the het spicy parts, not my jam (other folks would enjoy them), if I said "I was here for the plot", that wouldn't be a cheeky joke this time, at all. I love the series and wanted to read the stories of all the characters. I am pleased.
I really enjoyed this book! It is a very dark vampire king meets human girl fantasy romance.
I do wish we would have gotten more of Lily’s backstory/more of while she was actually on the run in the beginning, I think the book could have benefitted from that action. With that said, the tension between Natalya, Aleksander, and Lily throughout the book is great. The spicy scenes are intense and detailed. I would suggest this leans more on the dark romance/bdsm themes than the fantasy themes - so if that’s your jam this is a solid read.
HEA: YES! No major character deaths. Spice: 5/5 chiles Rate: 4.5/5
Pretty good book! I found a total of 3 or 4 grammatical errors. (It’s just habit; my mind has its own autocorrect.) I loved the relationship between Aleksander and Lily. I think him calling her his “flower” got old really quickly, though. Too much spice for me, but that’s my fault— I should’ve looked it up first. (Explicit and plentiful...) More than 6 scenes, IIRC. One was really long, and admittedly, I skimmed it. They don’t add anything to the plot, but they do enhance character development. If you like a LOT of DETAILED sex scenes, you will enjoy it. The scenes themselves were fantastic, Aleksander our consent king. :)
I did get worried it wouldn’t have a HEA ending, but it does. That’s very important to my enjoyment of a book so I put it first. I was happy with the way Sabor wrapped up the ending. I wish it never ended! The plot itself was very good and towards the last 100 pages I was reading like a madman.
My issues come with cliche phrasing, which honestly, I wouldn’t know how to skirt around myself. That’s why I’m a reader first, writer second. Then, we have the trope of the man who somehow always knows when the woman is turned on, and the woman is… somehow always turned on. And sorry, I do not believe any person with a vagina is so wet they start dripping everywhere. What is she, a water fountain?! But these are very small complaints; Sabor is a great writer. Will be reading more from her. (My first lesbian romance read is approaching very quickly!)
I’m on the fence with this one. I thought the characters were okay, likeable (besides Natalya), and they definitely had passion and compatibility with each other. I also liked the ghouls because I don’t really think ghouls get much attention as a creature in fantasy books.
However beyond the physical, I didn’t really believe the emotional connection between the two main characters. They barely spend any time together and when they do, it was basically sexual every time. As readers, we didn’t really see them spend any meaningful time together that would let them get to know each other. So, when the declaration of love inevitably came, I just wondered how because they barely know each other. It wasn’t believable.
I also thought the ending fell extremely flat. Once Lily passes out from Aleksander almost draining her, we immediately time jump to two months later and we’re told what happened afterward. As a reader, I don’t want to be told how the climax of the story ended. I want to actually read it. I wanted to read what happened when Aleksander woke up and realized what happened. What happened when lily woke up? How were the ghouls trying to eat Lily handled? What was that fight with drago and the google like? There was so much more that could have been written in the scene and we don’t get it. We just get told about two months later. I just found it a little lazy and thought it really hindered the story arc and the writing.
I really enjoyed this book. I love all the books in the Court of Chains series. I read Kiss of Seduction first so it was fun to read how Lily and Alexander met and their relationship developed. I know all the books in this series can be read as a standalone but I highly recommend reading this one before Kiss of Seduction to avoid spoilers for Taste of Pain.
STARS 4 star SPICE 4 (hot) - lots of graphic spice/kink CHEMISTRY Good ANGST Med/High SLOW BURN No CLIFFHANGER No CHARACTERS Aleksander and Lilly
FAVORITE QUOTE/QUOTES "Whatever it is. Whoever it is. I swear this to you. I'll protect you. I will keep you safe." - Aleksander
"I didn't stay...because it was my duty to keep you safe. I stayed because I couldn't imagine losing you." Aleksander
A LITTLE ABOUT THE BOOK/HOW DID IT MAKE ME FEEL I’ve really been enjoying this series so far. One of the things that stands out to me is the unique concept of couples being bound together through death and pain. I love how it takes characters who are supposed to be strong and invincible and shows their vulnerability instead.
WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THE CHARACTERS Aleksander had my attention. Watching him step out of his comfort zone when he started to feel real emotions for Lily was so compelling. Especially after feeling nothing for so long, it hit him like a flood. I also loved Lily’s transformation. She started off meek and terrified, just trying to survive, and then grew into someone who would willingly give her entire life for him. Even if it meant her death. That shift in her was beautiful to read.
WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THE BOOK The whole concept is interesting. It kept me very much drawn in.
MY FAVORITE PART- THIS IS GOING TO BE COVERED UNDER SPOILER
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE Not much. The politics and world was a little complex but I was able to follow.
TROPES Vampire - BDSM - DARK - Fantasy

For the sake of this review and to the author's credit for their content warning on their website, I'm going to exclude my thoughts on the bdsm practices and intimate scenes between the two main characters.
That being said, my main issue with this book is that Lily is extremely one-note. It feels like every scene she's in and every time she interacts with her main love interest, Aleksander, she does the exact same thing. She is afraid of him, turned on by how afraid of him she is, and curses her body's reaction to whatever is going on at the time. It gets very repetitive, and without much else going on in the plot other than the looming threat of what she's running from, it's hard not to feel like I'm reading the same thing over and over again.
Take this with a grain of salt, though. I dnf'd it at 50%.
This was a fabulous read! Should be read before the Court of Chains series if possible, but they’re all standalones (I started with book 2 technically and simply HAD to rush here to see Lilly and Aleksander’s story!!).
It’s sexy and dark and supernatural, and incredibly well written and paced. I am falling in love with this author!! A very cool talent that I noticed from the author’s other works too - the book is in 3rd person perspective but it’s used in such a way that still focuses on one character’s perspective at a time, with the option to share more of how others are feeling / what they’re thinking at key points. This is incredibly well executed here!! It makes the spicy scenes extra hot too. Mm-mmm.
So, if I needed confirmation - I am super gay. Anyhow, I did enjoy the background. I thought the ghouls were so cool and I wish there would have been more of that story. Felt forgotten for the majority of the book. I LIVED for getting to see this different side of Natalya. Will definitely be finishing the others in the series (Gifts of Gold & Wrath and Patience) for a complete understanding of the Court of Chains.
The plot was really nice and her ability to write was very good. But it was mostly just sex, I will say though, the scenes were very well written. But it felt like I was just reading sex scene after sex scene, I had thought it would have more story to it and such so that’s my fault for having that expectation.
Human on the run and needing protection. A cold vampire king ready to claim her, her body, and her blood in return.
Some of the smut was a tiny bit repetitive. I wish there was a bit of variation. They enjoy pain, yeah, but would have been nice to get one emotional/sweeter scene. But that's just me!
I am reading this series backwards. It's interesting seeing characters early in the series after reading their book. This book does have quite a few typos which dropped it from a 4 to a 3.
Really enjoyed the plot, spice, and character development.
I’m not normally a fan of heterosexual books, but I liked this. To see Lily become her true self throughout the book was great. I want to know where Daniel’s girlfriend got that necklace. I think that would be an interesting story on its own.
I love this series. I cant wait to finish. I started with kiss of seduction and it still is my favorite so far but i love alexander and lily’s story. Very entertaining and never got boring.
3.5 stars, dropped a half star just cause this felt more rushed than the others in the series and like the relationship wasn't as flushed out as it could have been. Still very enjoyable
This is what happens when you pick a random book without checking it first. It's part of a series, which is not really a big bother since it's more like a companion book. I kinda like the idea of the place, of what the Court of Chains is, and the things happening inside it. But the main character was so stupid and annoying that it killed any possible joy from this book.
Even though I don’t really do straight couples, this one was a pleasant surprise — and honestly, a necessary one. Taste of Pain fills in pieces left unanswered by Kiss of Seduction, peeling back layers of the Court of Chains world and giving depth to the story that started it all.
We see the shadows behind the glamour — the consequences, the scars, the choices that led to so much pain and power. The characters here are messy and human, their attraction laced with guilt and longing. It’s raw in a different way than the sapphic pairings, but no less intense.
The spice is exactly what you’d expect from Rawnie Sabor — explicit, emotional, and charged with meaning. It’s not just about desire; it’s about control, punishment, and forgiveness, wrapped in beautifully dark prose.
While it didn’t hit quite the same emotional resonance for me as the sapphic books, it deepened my understanding of this universe. It’s brutal, sensual, and surprisingly tender beneath all the ruin. A perfect companion piece for anyone who’s fallen for the Court of Chains.
