As the reigning Miss Teen Indiana, seventeen-year-old Corie Nielson has looks, charm, and her family’s formalwear boutique’s sponsorship. But her real dream is to use that success to become a horror movie scream queen. Except for one small Corie is struggling with ADHD without even realizing it. After missing yet another pageant commitment puts her on shaky ground with her coach, Corie wonders how she can possibly live up to everyone’s expectations, including her own.

When a regional horror host announces a monster costume contest where first place gets a guest appearance on the show featuring the winner's choice movie and cash prize, Corie knows she’s found a way to prove what she’s capable of. All she has to do is convince a grumpy special effects makeup artist, Everett Robbins, to partner up and turn her into a pageant-worthy monster. But when the contest distracts her from her pageant obligations, Corie must decide which matters pageants—and her promises to her family—or achieving her horror movie dreams?

Thank you @pagestreetya for the advanced copy to review!

Happy pub day to @adriennelrivera and this absolutely brilliant and funny novel. I loved following Corie and her friends on their adventures.

Corie feels like she’s a bit of a mess. She doesn’t mean to miss things, or forget things, or cause trouble. It just kind of happens. My heart ached for her as she blamed herself for so many things going wrong. She was dealing with so much at 17, and feeling really overwhelmed.

I loved her relationship with her cousin and her mom. I thought both were really well done and fleshed out. Each of them gave her support but also had good conflict with her. Her aunt was a little tougher but still, it worked well!! Corie’s sweet relationship with Ingrid was so special!!

Everett and his grumpy self!!! Oh my gosh!!! I so would have had a crush on both Everett and Corie in high school. They were simply adorable with their love of classic horror, silly references, and Hollywood dreams. I loved how they pushed each other and they were so sweetly romantic and cheesy and funny and I LOVED how they resolved their conflicts. So so good.

The friend group dynamic was so sweet and made me laugh a lot. I really enjoyed my time with this book and the whole time I kept saying out loud “this is so freaking CUTE!!!” Cause it is.

The contest to get in the local horror show was an absolute blast and watching Everett and Corie figure out what to do was so cool. ALSO. The eyeball. IYKYK 🥹😭😅

Anyway it’s out today so go grab it!!

This was the perfect YA contemporary romance. It had a funny and charming FMC with undiagnosed ADHD and a grumpy and moody SFX artist. It's the perfect book to read during fall/spooky season!

Corie is a pageant queen who loves horror movies and dreams of being a scream queen. Everett is a theater kid who has found a passion in special effects doing props and creepy looking makeup and costumes. They join forces to participate in a contest that could help them both achieve their dreams.

This book is a love letter to classic horror movie fans. As someone who has never taken an interest in horror films, this book actually made me want to watch all the movies mentionned in the book. It was so fun to see our MCs bond over their shared passion and grow closer when working together. They both had their own struggles with their families and were there for each other.

Thank you Netgalley for an ARC of this book!

Thank you to Netgalley and Page Street YA for the opportunity to read the eARC of this book!

I am such a huge fan of Young Adult contemporary books and I wholeheartedly appreciated this one for the portrayal of ADHD in Corie. This book didn’t give me a pamphlet with symptoms; it didn’t hold my hand and go “this is what ADHD means.” Adrienne Rivera SHOWED us a teenage girl who was diagnosed with ADHD. We get so many intricately crafted moments that work towards this larger goal and it is beautiful. I love the emphasis that she isn’t broken and doesn’t need to be fixed, but she also needs help sometimes. There’s nothing wrong with asking for that help. And again, I must emphasize that I enjoyed interacting with all of this on my own and not being told what to think about it. There’s a fine line between showing and telling and Rivera did a great job here!!

I also really enjoyed the SFX plot and the craftwork, mixed with the pageantry. I had so much fun with the horror banter and all the movies mentioned, even though I only knew a handful. It was fun and interesting!

My few qualms were minimal: the book overall felt a bit long. There are a few things that felt repetitive and Corie’s internal dialogue was a bit excessive- though it makes sense since it is the way her brain works. I also found it a bit annoying to include an “oh no, my parents won’t appreciate me turning my hobby into a career” plot that ended up going NOWHERE because the parents were actually supportive. ☠️ It was a conflict only because Everett was afraid to tell them and it was weird.

I also really disliked Gigi… though I appreciated that that subplot was fully executed and we got a sufficient conclusion. I do think their family dynamic as a whole was extremely messy…. Knowing they were putting so much pressure on a 17yo to do things for her great grandmother and then getting angry when she didn’t always pull through…. And then later telling her it wasn’t her responsibility. Ummm that’s kind of how you raised her?? 😅 It was a bit confusing to say the least.

The chemistry between Corie and Everett was very light. I kind of wish we had more time of them together than of them fighting. 😅 It was an odd decision to include two fights instead of just one at the third act conflict.

Overall though, I think this book fills a very important need in the YA community: a book that accurately shows us ADHD in all its messy moments, with a female character! I hope that readers of YA will enjoy this book and learn about lot!

I have never seen a book about SFX makeup before, so I was very intrigued by this one. Combining monstrous makeup with the realm of beauty pageants adds another layer of originality, and it was a lot of fun seeing how they come together. The descriptions of each look are absolutely fantastic, and the blend of beauty with gruesome body horror really comes through. Both Corie and Everett are also well-developed characters, and I loved the way their strengths complement each other as they work together for the costume contest. This would be a perfect read for Halloween, and for fans of horror movies.

I saw this displayed at my local library and I was immediately intrigued. A teen beauty queen who is super into horror films? Sign me up. My Fair Monster is about a young lady who enlists the help of a teen makeup artist for a contest and they split the prize money. I loved the premise for this book and how each chapter was titled after a different scary movie. The love interest was a grump with a gooey center and a talent for makeup artistry. My main gripe was how the heroine was unmedicated for her ADHD and constantly forgot things. It wasn't just little things like getting the mail or feeding her cats, but big things like forgetting pageants and important deadlines. It was infuriating that she lashed out at her family instead of getting help. I know I have my own neurodivergent tendencies but broken promises and empty apologies piss me off. Frustrating heroines aside, this was such an interesting debut with a unique storyline. I would love to read more from this author if their protagonists didn't have my pulling my hair out.

just got this one on Netgalley (thanks netgalley & publishers) and completely devoured it. I read it in two days while traveling, which says a lot!

Corie is Miss Teen Indiana and a horror lover, while also struggling to have everything together. while dreaming of becoming a scream queen, she finds a contest for a horror costume design that would get her on TV and create an opportunity to honor her great-grandmother, who was also an iconic scream queen. but to win the contest, she has to get talented Everett on board to do her costume makeup—who currently doesn’t like her.

I absolutely adored this book! the characters were so complex but I also liked how they faced the challenges that came up, both between them and in the rest of their lives. my heart was literally sore when they went through hard stuff, but it was only because I loved the characters so much.

people who relate to Corie will really love this book and how she and Everett really show up for each other and themselves over the course of the book. these characters were also so unique and I loved who they were.

Thank You Edelweiss and Page Street for giving me the chance to read this book early! Let me first start out by saying this book was great. The moment I saw the cover and then read what it was about I knew I had to read it, and I was not disappointed. That concept of this story was cute and refreshing. I love a grumpyxsunshine trope. As a horror movie lover it was fun reading the references throughout the book. I also enjoyed how descriptive it was when it came to the special effects. I would love to see this as a movie, I feel the story line plus the bonus of seeing all of the sfx would make for a really entertaining movie. This was a great debut and I’m excited to see what’s in store next for this author I will be keeping up with them, because whatever they write next I know I’ll want to read!! I can’t wait for people to get the chance to read this book and hope they love it just as much as I did!

absolutely ADORABLE everyone go pick it up

Full review ⤵️

I spend a ton of my time reading fantasies and horror so either just dark (horror) or a ton of wars and death (fantasies); so it’s always nice to change to a light-hearted book. This delivered in all the ways I loved it for that! Rivera wrote a great story about family dynamics, friendship turning into romance, and about believing about yourself!

Corie is a great character and I hope she learns more about herself and ADHD in her future! I was diagnosed at an early age and my mom made sure I knew what it meant and everything — so I never had this experience — what’s wrong with me, why can’t I do it. I think these types of books are so important because some readers can see themselves in these stories. And that’s what I love! The ADHD rep was messy (yes, it was undiagnosed so obviously it’ll be messy) and I love it! I usually also give YA characters more grace to be messy because they’re teens! Let them be messy!

I loved Everett almost immediately. Grumpy at a first glance and then he’s actually really sweet and only smiles at Corie. I felt for him in his plotline — unable to tell his dads his plan, not theirs for higher learning. I loved that he was so passionate about SFX and make-up and that he found a kindred spirit with Corie. I hope they’d stay together (in the book’s fictional future). I could even see them both on the same project or projects but that’s entirely getting ahead of myself.

The side/platonic relationships were also well done. I would’ve liked more of Ingrid (the grandmother) and Corie but I also get why there weren’t so many scenes, to show Corie’s messiness and forgetting everything (which big, big mood). I also appreciated how they made Teagan (Corie’s cousin) not be petty or rude etc towards Corie — as Rivera could’ve easily made it into the typical “I’m jealous of you/your standing re pageant titles so I’m really rude to you”. Instead it was a sweet friendship and them cheering each other up. I also liked how Tameeka, a new pageant girl, wasn’t seen as direct competition (at least not fully). No girl-on-girl hate absolutely meant for a happy me while reading.

I liked the inclusion of horror — both in the chapter headings where each was a different horror movie (Carrie, Signs, Mama, etc) and that the characters loved horror movies. I love it when characters share my interests, hobbies, favourites (movies, tv series, food). It allows me to relate to the characters easier and probably like them quicker. I’d definitely want to sit down and watch horror movies with Ingrid, Corie, and Everett. It also shows that horror isn’t just about scary creatures/characters and killing/gore — it can bring people together, introduce people to a new genre and allow the watchers to even think about stepping into the horror genre themselves (either by writing, acting, special effects like with Everett). Even if you aren’t a horror fan I’d wager you’d still really enjoy this!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC in exchange for my honest review!!

This was such a cute book. I needed something silly and sweet and this was perfect. There were parts that I was a little annoyed with, but you have to think about the age of the characters and also what is going on in their lives.

I resonated with Corie a lot. Sometimes I feel like a lot. Like I’m doing too much and being too much. Like I’ll mess everything up no matter what and people are better off without me. She also had a lot on her shoulders. I understand the fears and apprehension. I also didn’t think I’d love a beauty queen character but everyone here was so kind. And Corie loving horror movies and dressing up I know I could be friends with her. Everett was also so cute and their relationship was heartwarming.

This had a heavy focus on family and Corie’s family was both frustrating and loving. Ingrid was so cool. I had my great grandma in my life but didn’t have such a strong relationship with her. Ingrid seemed badass. I appreciated how open Corie was. When stuff bothered her about Everett she told him to his face. Even if she wasn’t the best at expressing her feelings she was ready to say when she was being mistreated.

This story was really cute and I loved reading it. It made me laugh and it was exactly what I was looking for. And the cover art is so pretty.

I really enjoyed this story, it had great flow and character arcs. Loved all the horror movie references and title drops.

Corie is so relatable by taking too much on her plate and then forgetting about prior commitments. The ADHD rep was well written and it was interesting to see how it played out in Corie's life.

Everett was a grump and loved all his frowns.

I wish there could be a movie because I would love to see Everett's creations come to life. Especially the eyeballs. iykyk.

My Fair Monster is such a fun read! Did I originally pick it up because I thought it was a monster romance? Yes. However, to be perfectly honest this isn't the only great book I have found that way (also check out Love and other Conspiracies). I really loved watching Corie chase her dreams and loved how Everett supported her (once he got over the whole rear ending him thing). The world of horror makeup was really cool to dive into.

I also really enjoyed the ADHD representation in this story. A lot of women have undiagnosed ADHD and the more we see representations of what ADHD looks like in women the more women will get diagnoses.

If you want a fun romcom that is explores a fun niche, with a lovable but imperfect heroine and a hero who is not perfect but will climb under a bush to save your cat, look no further!

Thanks to Page Street Publishing for providing me with an ARC. All opinions are my own.

My Fair Monster is a YA contemporary about Corie, a beauty queen who dreams of becoming a scream queen like her great-grandmother Ingrid. When their favourite show hosts a Monster contest, Corie sees her chance for the future she wants and not the one the majority of her family seem to want for her. The only problem is the fact that she doesn’t know how to do SFX make-up. Enter Everett - the skilled SFX artist who agrees to her scheme for a common goal. Along the way their skills, and relationship, grows alongside their monster creation.

This book is partly a love letter to horror films, something the chapter header highlights, and partly a story about a teenage girl trying to understand why she never seems to be able to do anything right. The main character Corie deals with undiagnosed ADHD and it’s a very relatable portrayal of dealing with being neurodivergent. Her partner in crime and love interest Everett serves as a nice contrast to Corie’s big personality. The relationship with her cousin Reagan was also really nice. But the best supporting character has to be great-grandma Ingrid and I wish that there had been more time spent with her. Many of the other adults were just frustrating.

While the characters are overall good, at least the younger ones and Ingrid, and all the feels, the plot itself wasn’t always solid. It ended up dragging a bit at places, especially towards the later part of the book. There was this big build-up to the monster costume contest, and after that the driving force of the story kind of fizzles out. The last third, apart from the sweet scenes with Ingrid, just didn’t capture my attention the way the rest of the book had.

If you’re looking for a book that’s overall lighthearted and sweet, while also having some of those fall/horror vibes without being a horror book - then this might be a good pick for you.

Thank you Netgalley and Page Street YA for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Adrienne Rivera’s “My Fair Monster” is a delightful mash-up of horror geekery, heartfelt coming-of-age, and slow-burn romance—with a generous dose of fake blood and beauty pageant sparkle. Equal parts quirky and empowering, this YA debut is a breath of fresh air for readers craving authentic representation, clever banter, and a protagonist who unapologetically loves both glam and gore.

At the center of the story is Corie, a seventeen-year-old aspiring special effects makeup artist with undiagnosed ADHD and a passion for horror movies. She’s bubbly, chaotic in the most endearing way, and incredibly relatable—especially for those who’ve ever felt underestimated by their family or doubted their own worth. Her journey toward self-acceptance is messy, funny, and deeply affirming, making her one of the most lovable protagonists in recent YA memory.

Corie is paired with Everett, her complete opposite—a grumpy, brooding type who slowly, reluctantly, and very believably softens as the two bond over SFX makeup and unexpected emotional vulnerability. Their dynamic is a perfect example of the grumpy/sunshine trope done right, with just enough tension and tenderness to keep you rooting for them. Though the romance leans on familiar beats (yes, there's a third-act breakup), the chemistry and emotional payoff are satisfying and sweet—clean and perfectly suitable for younger YA readers.

One of the book’s standout features is its detailed and passionate portrayal of special effects makeup. Rivera clearly knows and loves the horror genre, and it shows. From references to iconic horror films to the vivid descriptions of blood, guts, and prosthetics, the book practically begs for a movie adaptation. Every chapter title nods to a horror classic, and the appreciation for scream queens and creature features runs deep. Even non-horror fans will find themselves charmed by Corie’s enthusiasm.

But the real heart of “My Fair Monster” lies in its honest depiction of ADHD. Rivera “shows, not tells” what it’s like to live with a neurodivergent brain, avoiding heavy-handed exposition in favor of nuanced, lived-in experiences. Corie’s thoughts spiral, her emotions spike, and her need for support is clear—but so is her brilliance, creativity, and resilience. This is the kind of representation that feels seen, not simplified.

There are a few minor missteps—the pacing can be uneven, with internal monologue occasionally overstaying its welcome, and some conflicts (particularly involving Corie’s parents) are introduced but not fully explored. Still, the overall story is cohesive, warm, and emotionally rewarding.

Overall, “My Fair Monster” is a charming, horror-tinged romcom that wears its heart—and its fake blood—on its sleeve. With lovable characters, a unique premise, and affirming neurodivergent representation, it’s a must-read for anyone who’s ever dreamed of being both a beauty queen and a scream queen.

It’s been such a long time since I’ve read a YA book but my god this was super cute and adorable but also heartbreaking.
It’s the kind of book that I wish I had read when I was a teenager. I think it would have resonated so hard with me at that age, and I think there are going to be tons of young readers who are going to love this one because it is so different from other contemporary YA books, and honestly perfect for those that are a fan of creepy culture, horror films and spooky season!

Honestly, this book had me near to tears on more than one occasion at what Corie was going through and how much pressure she was putting on herself even though she is just a teenager who should be enjoying her time with her friends. This is totally something that I think a lot of young people are going to be able to resonate with, especially if they have family members who have really high hopes and expectations for what they will do, but I also think it speaks a lot to how toxic certain groups can be, and how toxic the mentality of always being perfect and being the winner can be for a young person.
Obviously I’m talking about the pageantry aspect of this book, because Corie is a pageant queen who comes from a long line of pageant winners, and as someone who isn’t from America, the whole idea of there being beauty queens is so otherworldly to me that it is so obvious that it can have a really negative impact on someone.

More than anything I think this is a story about how messy families are, and how messy/unpredictable life is, yet you should always be chasing your dreams and fighting for what makes you happy.

Obviously the cutest thing was seeing Corie and Everett start to fall in love and end up in a relationship towards the end of the book, but the most beautiful thing was seeing them slowly open up to each other as they were spending more time together for this contest, and how they really grew to appreciate the other person for who they are not who they should be.

The funnest thing was without a doubt all of the mentions towards horror films, and all of the talk of spooky things in general. The constant talk between the two of them about what the costume was going to be, and all of the talk about the SFX makeup and different things they could do was so cool and it was so obvious that the author has spent so much time researching different elements to make this book as real as possible.
All of the time that they spend together was adorable, and I really really really loved the spooky twist that was put on this book because without it I don’t think it would have been half as fun!

This is so good!!
I loved this book so so much!
Firstly, this has got to be the cutest meet-cute that there has ever been! I mean like ahhhh! Okay, throughout this book I laughed, I yelled, but mostly I fell in love with Everett and Corie. The vibe that they both give off, I ate up. Everett is very grumpy, hot, bad boy vibe. While, Corie is more good girl, nerd, bubbly vibe. Together, ugh my heart melted!
My Fair Monster is told through Corie's perspective, basically it's kind of like a pact/deal that if Everett helps her with her monster beauty pagent makeup, she'll help him become a more well known SFX makeup artist.
You know, I live for this kind of stuff, just the banter, the jokes, the vibes, the everything immediately drew me in. The chapter spacing was perfect and on top of that, I also loved the chapter names, like Young Frankenstein, Night of The Living Dead, and Theatre of Blood. I mean... How could you not want to read a book that has those sort of chapter names?!
Another thing I really liked about this book is the flaws both Corie and Everett have. I like that they have REAL human flaws that people ACTUALLY have. Like for instance Corie has ADHD, anxiety, and like dealing with parents/grandparents aging. I love the Everett has two dads, I love that Adrienne has an LGBT+, mental health, and ADHD rep.
I actually was surprised with how much I loved Adrienne Rivera's writing. It enthralled me and just made me want to keep reading and reading, the way she wrote Corie and Everett's characters were so uniquely well written and her writing is just so freaking good!
Last but not least, can we please just talk about this beautiful cover?! I'm in love, and the chapter marks and the section breaker symbol is too cute.
Overall, this book was just way too cute, and this has got to be in my top 3 of favorite romance books I've read! Love it!
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher/author. All opinions remain my own. Thank you so much for the ARC!

This was such a fun read for someone who LOVES scary movies! I really wanted to jump into this story and be friends with both of these characters. They were so fun, and I loved seeing their dynamic change as they got to know one another more. It was also cool seeing ADHD represented in the story as I don’t believe I’ve ever come across that before. I loved learning more about SFX makeup and the work that truly goes into it. Overall, I highly recommend this one to lovers of YA novels and kids in high school!

I LOVED this book a lot. The characters were all so amazing, even Gigi (kinda, she was at least an icon). I really enjoyed the horror movie titles with each chapter and all the references. Horror films, Halloween, and a car rear ended that turned to friends that turned into partners for a contest that might have turned into something more…

Everett and Corrie were the cutest opposites of each other (appearance wise anyway, real grumpy x sunshine vibe), they were both horror obsessed and I absolutely adored their chemistry from the start. Individually I really liked both of them too, they had good depth and flaws that made them come to life in the writing.

Luca might not have been able to read a room to save his life but he was such a lovely friend, the glue that helped that friend group stay together, honestly. Teagan might have been a nervous wreck half the time (same bestie) but she always showed up and I liked her friendship with Corrie.

It was also nice to see such good ADHD representation; especially for a FMC. Clocked it from the first chapter but it progressively got worse until she finally understood and took her mom’s advice to go to the doctor. Her mom, Vanessa did such a good job with helping her figure this out and get on a medication. She was always so supportive and I really liked how wholesome they were. The mom putting herself through night school and making sure her daughter had every opportunity for a future easier than hers.

So, anyway; five stars would definitely re-read and I really enjoyed this book! :)

Corie Nielson may be Miss Teen Indiana, but don’t let the crown fool you, her true dream isn’t on a runway, it’s on the big screen screaming in a horror movie! Yep, she’s got final girl energy and a love for all things creepy-cool! The only problem? She’s juggling pageant life, family expectations, and an undiagnosed case of ADHD that’s making everything ten times harder. Seriously, how is she supposed to keep track of a schedule when her brain is doing the Monster Mash 24/7?

When a local horror host announces a monster costume contest complete with cash and a TV appearance Corie sees her shot to finally break free of the pageant mold. All she needs is a killer look and someone who can turn her into a monster worthy of the silver screen. Enter Everett Robbins: talented, broody, allergic to sparkle, and the only special effects artist who can make Corie’s monster dreams come true if she can get him on board.

Corie is chaotic, charming, and just trying her best in a world that demands perfection. Watching her start to recognize how her ADHD affects her and how she can still thrive without fixing herself is genuinely heartwarming. And Everett? Grumpy artist with a gooey marshmallow center!

This book is funny, heartfelt, and packed with spooky fun. It celebrates the weird, the wonderful, and the wildly ambitious teens trying to carve their own path, even if it involves fake blood and a rhinestone tiara!

⚡️Thank you Page Street YA and Adrienne Rivera for sharing this book with me!

⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book is exactly what I needed to read as a teen who went to all night screamoramas to see new horror films and as someone who can't stop watching Miss Congeniality. Watching Corie's two worlds combine as she competes in something she's passionate about is such a fun journey to be on. The horror movie references are such a fun treat, and how her great grandmother plays into it all is a great dynamic, especially for lost media fans.

Corie’s story is as much a love letter to horror as it is to the teens and adults who feel like, no matter how much they try, their brain will always betray them. There are so many people that can’t understand why they can’t remember things or why they have trouble focusing, and I think seeing Corie's experience will be really helpful to young readers. That it’s okay to need help and to ask for it. She’s so hard on herself, even when her family and friends say she should give herself a break, and I think it’s reflective of what many teens go through today, as is Everett’s struggle of talking to his dads about college.

I love Corie and Everett’s ending. It reinforces the importance of living in the moment without letting a future that might not even happen linger over you. I know that’s something I always need a reminder of, and I especially needed it as a teen. So many YA books today have an epilogue that shows an idealistic, albeit not super realistic, ending, and this hit the perfect chord.

This was awesome, such a unique concept with a great cast of characters for the most part. I loved the grumpy x sunshine vibes with Corie and Everett, Corie was a great female lead who was too hard on herself for things she couldn't control; but that wasn't all her fault. I hated her aunt for constantly lashing out at her and never really apologizing for a big mistake she makes later on, I don't care fi you're going through something, it's not right to lash out at the same person constantly. Corie and Everett were adorable together and I wish we got more of them together and an earlier make up. Corie's thought process was totally valid after all that she's been through, how could you not feel the same way she does if you're repeatedly told what she was? I loved the dynamic with Teagan and Luca was there briefly but he wasn't bad either. I do wish there wasn't so much outside drama going on though, I feel like some of it wasn't needed when there was already quite a bit going on, more time could have been dedicated to the romance instead. Over all I really enjoyed this and would absolutely recommend this to anyone 17+, it hits on a lot of important things that kids go through at that age with their futures and also sheds some light on being someone with undiagnosed ADHD.

The beauty one can find in the blood and guts of horror is truly the art of it all! If you have not already guessed, your average romance or romcom is not my first choice to read. The concept of a beauty queen wanting to become a scream queen and navigating her mental health through the horror genre was a must read. If I read romance it needs to have one of the few elements – gaming, LGBTQ+, or horror/horror adjacent content. Rivera’s appreciation for the horror genre dragged the zombies from the grave with homages to classic horror in every chapter title. Kudos to the details given to the FX effects we see throughout My Fair Monster.
The detail of the makeup and the homage to movies shows great appreciation for the genre. Who could not fall in love with this sweet tale of a girl learning how to fight her demons while falling in love? We have all been in that position and that adds to the authenticity of this novel here. Come for the silly banter and dialogue and stay for the eerie scenery with this beauty queen turned scream queen! This story reads like such a warm hug, especially to my neurodivergent brain. I loved how Corie's ADHD played such a huge part in the story, and her character development. The overwhelming guilt and crushing disappointment in herself felt so realistic, and was so accurate to how my ADHD also presents. I loved the conclusion of the story. Every loose end gets wrapped up, and Corie's character development is satisfying.

I absolutely adored the romance plot as well. Corie and Everret had so much chemistry, and the grumpy/sunshine dynamic never felt forced. They read like real teenagers, and it was so wholesome seeing their relationship blossom.

I honestly loved the humour mixed into the writing. The dryness and self deprication in Corie's jokes was chefs kiss. No jokes read cringy, out of place or awkward in the story or for the characters, and all in all, the plot was just so sweet.

I would absolutely recommend to readers, especially those fond of neurodivergent representation.

A huge thank you to Page Street Publishing and Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Corie is a teenage pageant queen. She is also obsessed with horror films and her devotion to 1960's Horror films, courtesy of her great-grandmother, Ingrid. However, Corie is a bit forgetful at times.
When the opportunity to compete in a horror makeup contest rises, will she commit to the super cute grumpy makeup artist, her duties as a Pageant Queen, her family or herself?

A really sweet and real teen story of self-realization (addressing ADHD) and the reality of teen romantic relationships, and addressing self-discovery (love of the Performing Arts) from an ADHD debut author herself, Adrienne Rivera has crafted a fun, inclusive, family-centered story. Perfect for Halloween, theatre lovers, those with familial expectations, those possibly concerned about mental health and neurodivergent needs, first love, family needing support, and featuring a great cast of very strong characters!

More than a Romance, more than just a story about a Pageant competitor and the makeup artist, such a fun read!!

*For those who know me, this is one of those that is going on my "to own" shelf. That's how good it was.

I liked the characters and the mix of pageantry and special effects, I don’t think I’ve read many other books featuring those interests and they complemented each other well here. Ingrid was a delight, the banter was fun, and reading about an undiagnosed ADHDer was also enlightening and refreshing for YA.

My biggest gripe is the pacing of the ending:

Overall— cute! Probably more of a 3.5 rounded up for now, but I also just finished it and am still emotionally invested so I may revisit that in the future.
